National Backlash Only the Tip of the Iceberg

Washington DC, WA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/01/2022 -- Today, Mike Baggz announced his intent to lead a boycott against the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), located on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Recently, concerns have mounted among Black American descendants of chattel slavery in the United States, who feel betrayed by the museum's decision to include the curation of Latinx history within the building. In recent weeks, the NMAAHC posted a nationwide job listing for a Latino curator to further their Latino Studies program, although the Museum's mission states that they focus exclusively on non-Latino Black Americans who are descendants of the chattel slavery that occurred in the United States. The museum was founded on the understanding that the culture and history of African Americans should not be intertwined with that of other ethnic groups, and the inclusion of Latino culture can thus be considered a revision of history.

Established by an Act of Congress in 2003 and opened in 2016, the NMAAHC serves as a global hub to document, memorialize, and educate the public about the lineage, history, culture, and lives of Black Americans from the start of US chattel slavery through contemporary times. Black Americans who are descended from chattel slavery are, therefore, deeply concerned about the redirection of NMAAHC's legally established purpose and mission. Mike Baggz and many others have pointed out that the most alarming aspect of the inclusion of the Latinx identifier is that it would inherently include White-identified Latinos like Rafael Trujillo, who practiced some of the vilest and most vitriolic anti-Black racism in the Western hemisphere, specifically in the Dominican Republic, by committing genocide against Black-skinned Dominicans and Haitians.

Black Americans have recently been quite active on social media about this change in the purpose, mission, and direction of the NMAAHC. Generally, these responses have expressed the sentiment that the inclusion of Latinx history in a formal space that was specifically created, by an Act of Congress, to focus on Black Americans is immoral and confusing. Some feedback from Latinx community representatives like Soledad O'Brien was quickly shut down on social media. O'Brien, born María de la Soledad Teresa O'Brien to Australian and Cuban immigrant parents, is not a descendant of victims of US chattel slavery, so the Museum is not focused on her and her lineage, yet she weighed in.

Speaking on the Torraine Walker Show podcast, Mike Baggz, the entrepreneur who started the conversation on social media, stated that efforts will continue in the quest to seek accountability from the Museum, "We will continue demanding responsibility from those in charge and plan accordingly." He has emailed the Museum and received in return a standard copy-and-paste reply with no real answers or specifics. In response to the NMAAHC's misguided mission and the lack of engagement by its staff, Baggz created a petition that has amassed well over 2,400 signatures to date.

Since beginning this action, the museum has faced an onslaught of criticism from the Black-American community against what is perceived as an attempt to erase the rich culture and history of this population. The museum's attempt to be more inclusive of other ethnicities is detrimental to the Black-American story. "A space specifically created for African Americans should not be intertwined with any other ethnic groups, and efforts to [include Latino history] will be considered a revision of African-American US history," stated Mike Baggz. "The most alarming part of this effort by NMAAHC is the fact that it would also include Latinos of all races, many of whom hold the vilest anti-Black sentiments that are historically rooted and documented in Latin-American culture."

At the time of this press release, no response has been received from the NMAAHC, and additional attempts to follow up on the issue have been ignored.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Lindsey K.

Dallas, TX -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/11/2020 -- Starting October 2nd, USCIS fees will be significantly rising. Attorneys at Davis & Associates are encouraging all eligible to file their application with USCIS as soon as possible.

Because USCIS's budget must be covered by people seeking immigration benefits and not taxpayers, they reassess their fees every few years to ensure their financial stability. It's been almost 4 years since the last fee increase in 2016.

Of particular note would be the fee changes for political asylum applications (in the past, they were fully subsidized by other filing fees), as well as the 345 percent increase to form N-470. The N-470 is used by someone wishing to be outside the US while preserving their continuous presence for naturalization purposes. Similarly, the Naturalization application will increase by 83%---the new fee will be $1,170.

USCIS is also changing some of its policies. Previously, in certain instances, USCIS was including employment authorizations and travel permits as a courtesy based on other applications paid. Starting October 2nd, these applications will require their own fee and will no longer be provided complimentary.

Individuals may review USCIS fee changes on the Davis & Associates website.

Davis & Associates understands the burden immigration fees can put on families and encourage families and businesses to file cases before October 2nd when possible to avoid the fee increase.

In addition, the law firm offers free immigration consultations for family immigration cases where applicants may ask questions and get a quote for services.

Davis & Associates has a robust immigration practice including adjustment of status, green card, immigration appeals, deportation, asylum, citizenship, and a vast portfolio of business immigration services.

Davis & Associates is the immigration law firm of choice in Houston & North Texas including Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, McKinney and surrounding areas. Their attorneys provide expert legal counsel for all aspects of immigration law, including deportation defense, writs of habeas corpus and mandamus, family-sponsored immigration, employment-sponsored immigration, investment immigration, employer compliance, temporary visas for work and college, permanent residence, naturalization, consular visa processing, waivers, and appeals. Attorney Garry L. Davis is Board Certified in Immigration and Nationality Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Local Woman Starts Breast Cancer Outreach for Vulnerable Population

New York, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/04/2019 -- After realizing her local hospital only offered a single breast cancer support group for Spanish-speakers, local breast cancer survivor Pierre started her own support group in her apartment building, in connection with LatinaSHARE, the Spanish-language division of national cancer nonprofit SHARE. Her next meeting, open to all Spanish-speaking women affected by breast cancer, is June 25. Pierre is also making a targeted effort to perform outreach into Orlando's Spanish-speaking communities.

"I had no family history of breast cancer that I knew of. Women didn't do self-exams at that time. People didn't talk about those things," Pierre says of when she was diagnosed. Eventually she called LatinaSHARE's free Spanish-language breast cancer helpline. Soon, she was volunteering herself as a LatinaSHARE support group facilitator.

After completing treatment in New York, Pierre moved to Orlando. But she missed the connection and fulfillment that came from working with breast cancer patients and survivors. When she discovered the lack of Spanish-language services available to Orlando's Latina population, she took it upon herself to begin filling that need through a support group and outreach.
"I hung a support group flyer up in the local senior center and in my apartment building. And the women just came."

Orlando has a significant Latino population but lacks meaningful access to Spanish-language cancer support services. Research shows that Hispanic women face more barriers to breast cancer care than other ethnicities, including cultural and language issues, lack of childcare or dependable transportation and, being denied sick leave from employers. Lower income or poor health insurance also leads the community to receive fewer mammograms than other women, which means Latina women are often diagnosed at advanced stages that are harder to treat.

"So many obstacles get in the way of Latinas taking care of their breast health, from language barriers to fear," said Jennie Santiago, co-director of LatinaSHARE. "We are so excited to have a presence in Orlando where there are fewer Spanish-language services. This will allow us to continue to empower these women to overcome these obstacles."

Many cancer support groups are led by an LCSW. Pierre's group uses LatinaSHARE's peer model, which trains cancer survivors to lead support groups. "Having a survivor facilitate instead of a social worker helps to put a face on survivorship for women. It helps them realize they can be okay too," says Pierre.

Pierre is now conducting outreach among clinics, hospitals, and community hubs for Orlando's Spanish-speakers to distribute culturally relevant information about breast and ovarian cancer, and is recruiting other women to do the same. Eventually, she'd like to see even more Spanish language services become available in Orlando. "There are so many programs that helped me when I was a patient, like yoga and meditation. I want to be a part of helping to offer more services in Spanish that continue to improve women's health."

Pierre's group is held entirely in Spanish and meets at 350 E. Jackson St. 2-3:30pm, on June 25, July 16, and July 30. Register here or call 212.221.1626.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Melissa Sakow
Communications Director
SHARE Cancer Support
Telephone: 1-212-937-5583
Email: Click to Email Melissa Sakow
Web: https://sharecancersupport.org

Questioned routinely about things such as how he wound up playing soccer in Brazil, how he left high school after his junior year, how he became multilingual, how he became an engineer, and how he decided to pursue a Ph.D. Regardless of the variation of the questions, the answer is always the same. According to Naeem, "Who I am and what I've done begins not with luck but with parents who have always been zealous advocates for my life. Before I was born my parents created a template for my life – a backward design strategy that continues to prepare me each day to overcome challenges and maximize opportunities."

Immensely grateful to his parents, Naeem wrote: "¿Qué haremos hoy? (What Are We Gonna Do Today?)". Naeem knows there is no way that he can repay his parents for all that they did. Moreover, he knows his parents do not expect and would not accept repayment of any kind.

"The one thing that I'd like to do to honor my parents for encouraging and inspiring me is to pay it forward. "I'd like to be a catalyst for other parents to see the immense value of having affirmed and supportive relationships with their children."

"¿Qué haremos hoy? (What Are We Gonna Do Today?)" is a beautifully illustrated activity guide (available in both English and Spanish) to help parents remain intentionally involved with their children year-round. "¿Qué haremos hoy? (What Are We Gonna Do Today?)" chronicles two inquisitive children questioning their parents ¿Qué haremos hoy? alternatively, "what are we gonna do today?". "¿Qué haremos hoy? (What Are We Gonna Do Today?)"' highlights things I did with my parents that not only intensified my curiosity but laid an excellent foundation for how to approach life. I can't imagine what my life would be without intentional and actively engaged parents."

Naeem knows what he is going to do today and tomorrow. Naeem's life mission statement includes using technology to create products and services that enhance the human condition especially for those who have been historically and geographically disenfranchised and underserved. In the immediate, Naeem hopes that "¿Qué haremos hoy? (What Are We Gonna Do Today?)" encourages at least one parent to read with and be actively engaged in their child's life.

Local Survivor Offering Spanish Breast Cancer Support Group During National Women's Health Week

Brooklyn, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/03/2018 -- Sally Pierre, a 30 year breast cancer survivor, wants to change the landscape of breast cancer support for Latina women in Orlando.

After realizing her local hospital offered only one Spanish-language breast cancer support group, Pierre started her own in parternship with LatinaSHARE, the Spanish-language program of national cancer support nonprofit SHARE. Her next meeting, open to all local Spanish-speaking women affected by breast cancer, is May 15, during National Women's Health Week.

When she had been diagnosed with breast cancer 30 years ago in New York, Pierre felt extremely alone. "I had no family history of breast cancer that I knew of. Women didn't do self-exams at that time. People didn't talk about those things," she says. Eventually she called the free LatinaSHARE breast cancer helpline through cancer support nonprofit SHARE. Soon, she was volunteering herself as a LatinaSHARE support group facilitator.

After completing treatment, Pierre moved to Orlando. But she missed the connection and fulfillment that came from working with breast cancer patients and survivors. When she discovered the lack of Spanish-language services available to Orlando's Latina population, she took it upon herself to begin filling that need.

"I hung a support group flyer up in the local senior center and in my apartment building. And the women just came."

Orlando has a significant Latino population but lacks meaningful access to Spanish-language cancer support services. Research shows that Hispanic women face more barriers to breast cancer care than other ethnicities, including cultural and language issues, lack of childcare or dependable transportation, being denied sick leave from employers. Low income or poor health insurance also leads the community to receive fewer mammograms than other women, which means Latina women are often diagnosed at advanced stages that are harder to treat.

Pierre says her group of breast cancer survivors continues to grow. Eventually, she hopes to work to promote even more Spanish-language and culturally sensitive services in Orlando. "There are so many programs that helped me when I was a patient, like yoga and meditation. I want to be a part of helping to offer more services in Spanish that continue to improve women's health."

The group is held entirely in Spanish and meets at 350 E. Jackson St. 2-3:30pm, on May 15 and 29, June 12 and 26, and July 20 and 24. Register at 212-221-1626.

About LatinaSHARE
LatinaSHARE is the Spanish-language division of SHARE, offering a complete roster of breast and ovarian cancer support services entirely in Spanish. LatinaSHARE provides reliable health information, culturally sensitive support, and practical resources such as wigs and breast forms to over 28,000 women every year through its support groups, Spanish-language helpline, education initiatives, patient-navigators, and outreach to immigrant women. It has been recognized by many international corporations, the New York State governing body, and community trusts alike.

Cuenca, Ecuador -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/10/2018 -- In the past, the goal of product manufacturing was to produce as many items as possible for the lowest price. All of the products were exactly the same, enabling fast production. However, these days, consumer preferences have shifted back towards handcrafted items that are truly one of a kind.

The trouble with this is that the artisans who create these incredible handcrafted products don't always have the connection to their customer base. Loop Fair Trade aims to remedy this issue by connecting skilled artisans in developing countries, like Ecuador, with product designers from around the world. This way, the artisans will know what customers are looking for.

Loop Fair Trade's first initiative is to help artisans in Azuay, Ecuador. The artisans from this region are known for creating the popular Panama straw hats and a variety of other specialized handicrafts. Through collaborations with designers from across the globe, these artisans can preserve their cultural heritage while also making money to support their families. This, in turn, boosts their entire community economically.

The primary objective of the project is to create sustainable communities in areas that are most in need of economic boosts. This will also strengthen their cultural heritage while also creating more jobs for local residents.

Political instability in the region may present challenges for the project, which is why the Loop Fair Trade team has built a network of professionals with experience in this area to help head off any issues that arise. These professionals will also ensure that the organization is following all regulatory requirements associated with the project, as well as ensuring tax compliance, both in Ecuador and in the United States.

To help bring the project to fruition, the creators have launched a <a href="https://http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/717434856/economic-development-for-ecuadorian-artisans?ref=user_menu">crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. The campaign has a funding goal of $2,000, which it must meet by April 15. Those who pledge more than $300 to the campaign can choose from a selection of one-of-a-kind, handcrafted Panama straw hats. The hats in the collection have been either painted or embroidered by hand by traditional Ecuadorian artisans.

Those who contribute $800 or more will be listed on Loop Fair Trade's website and social media accounts as a sponsor. This is a great option for businesses looking to boost their global image through giving back to the global community.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Joshe Ordonez
Email: Click to Email Joshe Ordonez
Web: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/717434856/economic-development-for-ecuadorian-artisans?ref=user_menu

The firm is located in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, which has one of the largest Arab immigrant communities in the United States.

"Am I frustrated? I'm extremely frustrated," Lahoud says in the report. "I can't give answers [to my clients]. I have no idea what President Trump is going to do next."

Lahoud and the team at Baurkot & Baurkot have been busy since Trump's inauguration in January. Some their clients have been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as part of a crackdown from the administration. And, Lahoud fears that more undocumented immigrants—including those who have not committed any infractions—will be swept up in the process.

The NBC News report also details the story of Ali Almaiali, who fled Iraq as a refugee in 2008 with his wife. Almaiali's brother, whose life is in constant danger back in Iraq, has been dealing with a stalled U.S. visa application for several years. Attorneys Baurkot & Baurkot were able to move the visa processing forward—until President Trump signed an executive order in February banning immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iraq.

That travel ban was since overturned by a federal district court in Washington state, and Trump's revised executive order no longer includes Iraq. However, it is not yet clear if Almaiali's brother will ever get to seek refuge in the United States.

The NBC News Report allowed Lahoud to give voice to the challenges facing immigrants—including those living in the United States legally.

Join Friends of Democracy for a Free Mariachi Fueled Get Out the Vote Event.

Albuquerque, NM -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/04/2016 -- This election cycle has brought Hispanic and Latino issues to the forefront. Not since George Wallace has there been such blatant and seemingly proud racism exhibited by a major party presidential nominee. Progressives cannot afford to set this one out. All progressives, New Mexico progressives included, need to join together in this election to keep the unthinkable from happening and to support our Hispanic and Latino brothers and sisters.

However, this election is about much more than the vile racism, fear and hatred aimed at Hispanics and Latinos. It is about all Americans that cherish civil and human rights. Along with wearing a proud badge of racism, the republican candidate is draped in participation ribbons of every rank for his bigotry, misogyny, xenophobia and generalized hatred of all that is not white and male.

Sitting this one out is not acceptable for any friend of Democracy and particularly any true progressive. It is not acceptable to take the stance that the republican candidate will be only a one term president. It is unacceptable and naïve to think that nothing of importance for progressives can change for the worse in only 4 years. Look to an extreme right Supreme Court and imagine what might happen to the rights of not just Hispanics and Latinos but women, minorities of every stripe, LGBT, Muslims (and other non-Christian religions), and every other group not falling into the white male camp. Imagine what will happen to the rights of workers, consumers, patients, voter rights, civil rights and Democracy itself under an extreme right corporatist Supreme Court.

It might help to take a look at just a few of the republican nominee's stated intentions. Here's a short list just on the topic of race, nationality and religion:

1. Expel 11 million undocumented immigrants.
2. Expel even children born in the U.S. to those immigrants which means expelling American citizens,
3. Ban all Muslim immigration,
4. Create a registry for Muslim immigrants and citizens alike,
5. Implement nationwide stop and frisk which is inherently racist.

Things can change very quickly at the Supreme Court. In fact, they can change with the stroke of a pen. True progressives cannot sit this election out and let the progress of the last century be turned back on civil rights, human rights, women's rights, minority rights, LGBT rights, worker rights and more. Sitting this one out or otherwise contributing to the election of the republican candidate is a betrayal of progressive values. It is betrayal of those activists from the past that fought, bled and died for the very rights that we enjoy today. It is a selfish betrayal of our brothers and sisters. It is betrayal of Bernie. It is betrayal of reason and maturity.

It is not enough to just win the presidential election. The outcome of this election must be an overwhelming rejection of the primitive values exhibited by the republican nominee and every single politician that has endorsed him. It must be a win of historical proportions that gives notice to all republicans up and down the ballot at every level that we will not be turned back, progress will continue unabated. That we will all see a more perfect union with or without them.

Get out to Vote. Get involved. Walk. Call. Give. Just do something.

Come to the Mariachi for Democracy event learn how you can help keep the unthinkable simply unthinkable and not reality.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Parrish Collins
CueOps, LLC
Telephone: 505-910-4100
Email: Click to Email Parrish Collins
Web: https://cueops.com/
