Atlanta-area college and high school students interested in a career in business, law or medicine are encouraged to apply for a scholarship.

The Simmons Law Memorial Scholarship is offered by the Simmons Law firm. It honors the memory of the late Rev. Booker T. Simmons; James Taylor, Sr.; Irene Taylor and Michael Simmons. The Rev. Simmons and the Taylors are the grandparents of the owner of the Simmons Law firm, Tiffany Simmons. Michael Simmons is her uncle.

Those applying must write an essay with the title "Do All Lives Matter?" and send it to the Simmons Law firm.

"My grandparents believed in helping people. My uncle believed in helping people. They saw the dignity of all human life. I want to know what your thoughts about this are. I want to know what you think," Ms. Simmons said.

The deadline for applications is Jan. 29, 2016.

"The Rev. Simmons dedicated his life to God and helping people to a better way to live," Ms. Simmons said. The Rev. also owned a grocery store.

"Granddad Simmons fed people in their soul and their body," Ms. Simmons said. "He was such an inspiration to me."

"The idea of helping other people is a thread that links everyone whom the scholarship honors", she said.

Mr. Taylor died from kidney failure. Michael Simmons died of leukemia two days after Thanksgiving 2015. Mrs. Taylor owned a hair salon in Grand Rapids, MI, for 50+ years, despite not graduating from high school. In later years, she did earn a GED. She died of a rare health condition.

"This is why an interest in medicine is a scholarship requirement. I hope that some student who receives this money will develop a breakthrough treatment and save lives," Ms. Simmons said. "The business is because of my grandparents' businesses. The law part of the scholarship is because I am a lawyer."

Atlanta Attorney Tiffany Simmons was recently interviewed by online magazine Dev Gillespie about life in the Big Peach, being a lawyer, a boss and giving back

Atlanta, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/27/2016 -- What is a boss? What is it like being an attorney in Atlanta? What does it mean to give back to the community? These are some of the questions addressed in an interview with Tiffany Simmons in the online magazine Dev Gillespie.

"When Dev called and asked if she could interview me, I was very flattered. She only interviews people who are leaders and who are making a difference in the greater Atlanta region," Ms. Simmons said. "I'm glad to know that people do believe I'm someone who is working to make our society better."

The interview touched on a number of topics, and Ms. Simmons' background. Among the accomplishments noted were that she passed the Bar Exam on her first attempt. A difficult achievement.

"Some very successful and famous lawyers did not pass on their first try. It's not an easy test and it challenges you to really think. You have to apply everything you learned in law school," she said.

Attorney Simmons started her law firm in 2009 and has seen a steady growth since opening.

REALITY TV

Ms. Simmons announced she is working on a reality TV series, Atlanta Law. She told Gillespie the show is meant to tell people what it's like being a boss and being a lawyer in the Capital of the South.

"It's not just about the South and Atlanta. Look at the nation's lawyers. Only five percent are black women. We make up 13 percent of the population in the United States. Why don't more of us go into law? I hope this TV show will encourage more women of color to consider this as a career," Ms. Simmons said.

THE PRACTICE

Being an attorney is about helping people and making sure they get a fair deal in whatever they are working toward, she told the magazine. Ms. Simmons specifically targeted the justice system and the entertainment industry as places where people need quality representation.

"I've sat in my clients' shoes because I've actually been in a trial myself. I've sat in my clients' shoes that are in entertainment because I am talent for various outlets," she said in the interview. "The justice system was founded on things that were not right, so I want to do my part to fix it, whether it's in business, criminal defense, or entertainment."
