He says the majority of deaths in Parkinson's patients are caused by aspiration pneumonia, a lung infection that develops after breathing in food, saliva or stomach acid instead of swallowing. According to the National Institutes of Health, difficulty swallowing is the primary cause of aspiration pneumonia, the leading cause of death for Parkinson's patients.

He is also trained in Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) it is categorized as respiratory muscle strength training (RMST). The use of EMST has been shown to improve voluntary cough function following a training regimen of EMST. Strengthening the respiratory muscles for cough function is vital in PD to minimize the risk of aspiration according to a study by the University of Florida (UF).
