RE/MAX Classic Agents go to Bat for Devon Strafford Little League

Wayne, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/15/2016 -- When an invitation to enjoy a favorite pastime includes supporting America's favorite pastime, it seems like a natural. For RE/MAX Classic's Dave Rantanen and Brett Furman, nothing could be more natural than hosting a fundraising bowling party in support of Devon Strafford Little League. The event, which included free bowling, food, and raffles, took place at Devon Lanes in Devon on Friday, June 3rd, from 5:30 to 8pm.

"I played ball on the Devon Strafford Little League fields many years ago as a child," said Mr. Furman, Broker-Owner of RE/MAX Classic and co-host of the "Show Up and Bowl" event. "Offering my support to the community I grew up in is a pleasure, especially when it contributes to the development of a great group of kids."

Why bowling?

"It's fun, pure and simple," said Dave Rantanen, Mr. Furman's business partner and a Devon Strafford Little League coach who also sits on the League's Board of Directors. "A fundraising event for an organization that is about kids just has to be an all-around good time."

Mr. Rantanen, who conceived of and hosted the bowling event, is a life-long devotee to the sport of baseball. Both of his sons are active players in the League and lovers of the game.

"When you see up close what dedication to a team sport does for your own kids, it really puts a different spin on things," said Mr. Rantanen. "This game teaches perseverance, patience, and the long-term payoff of hard work. It teaches kids how to belong to a group while not being afraid to stand out, and how to really pull for another person to succeed. Lessons like that usually come along much later in life. That's just one of the reasons why being a part of the League is about so much more than baseball."

To that end, he has established two separate but important charities that give back not only to his community but to the greater good as well.

Furman grew up in a home whose focus was on giving back. His parents were a pediatrician and a grade school teacher. Two people whose careers were nothing more than giving back.

"My parents instilled in me a sense of giving. After I lost them both, I realized the void they left could never close, but it could be partially filled," said Furman.

Furman created two charities for his parents' honor. For his late father, the Harold B. Furman Memorial Research Fund for ALS research and the Flora M. Furman American Cancer Society fund.

Losing a family member to any disease is a terrible thing. Brett Furman saw firsthand the ravages of ALS on his father, a man who dedicated his life to the healing and treatment of diseases in children. Dr. Furman succumbed to ALS in 1994 and Brett has never forgotten.

"When the ALS ice bucket challenge came around, I was one of the participants. It gave me great joy to be a part of such a wonderful way to raise money for ALS research that I almost forgot the water was cold," said Furman.

Flora Furman was first a teacher and then a mother. She stopped teaching when her three children were born, one of whom was Brett. Mrs. Furman contracted cancer in 1995 and lost her fight in 2000. Like his father, Brett wanted the memory of his mother to be a positive one. He started a second charity in her name; this time for cancer research.
