Coronavirus Impact on Medical Devices Sales: iData Research Fills the Gap for Medical Device Companies World-Wide

The pandemic has forced many elective surgeries to be cancelled or postponed. Can we expect a rebound in 2021? How have average selling prices changed over the last year? iData Research brand-analysis service is finding the answers.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/16/2020 -- iData Research is engaging custom solutions to support customers with questions related to the pandemic's impact on healthcare markets. Analysis of products, such as those used for breast reconstruction and hernia repair exemplifies the current scenario showing 80% of the 18 companies analyzed are, for instance, showing an average of 36% sales decrease in Q2'20 relative to Q2'19, with 43% seeing more than one million dollars drop in quarterly revenue.

iData's MedSKU brand-level analysis provides up-to-date data on average selling prices, units sold, revenue and market shares of all of the top-performing and emerging products in the US market by SKU (stock keeping unit). It empowers healthcare companies with insights into the market dynamics, answering top-of-mind questions arising from the current economic scenario like revenue impact, changes in average selling prices and overall brand performance. The SKU-level data and product information allows users to also run their independent analysis by "slicing and dicing" the market to get direct product comparisons.

"There's both an economic and strategic imperative for healthcare companies to review their plans, recognizing that the impact of the pandemic now requires better informed and data-driven decisions," said Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData Research. "The findings deriving from MedSKU are a unique way to identify and address what is really happening in the market."

While the market leaders AbbVie (Allergan) and Becton Dickinson (C.R. Bard) still hold a significant share of the market, the MedSKU analysis shows smaller companies and brands capturing market share gains.

Information from MedSKU has also provided valuable insights into price changes and trends. The analysis for US breast reconstruction and the US hernia repair market showed that 16% of the SKUs had a price increase larger than 5% in Q2'20 relative to Q2'19. Meanwhile, only 7% had a 5% or more price drop when compared to 2019 average selling prices.

TAVR Procedures with Cerebral Embolic Protection to Grow by 300%– New Market Research

A recent study projects the number of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) to triple in volume by 2026 as the FDA expands indication to include low-risk patients.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/09/2020 -- iData Research, a global consulting and market research company projects the number of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures performed with cerebral embolic protection (CEP) devices to more than triple in volume by 2026. As stroke remains a severe complication associated with TAVR procedures, CEP devices exist to address this risk and should gain popularity as TAVR procedures continue to grow.

iData's report on the U.S. market for TAVR devices forecasts a total market size of $5 billion by 2026. This growth can be primarily attributed to the increase of TAVR procedures, as iData expects that more than 110,000 procedures will be performed by 2026 on an annual basis.

In August 2019, the FDA expanded indications for transcatheter heart valves to include low-risk patients. As a result of this expansion, Edwards Lifesciences' SAPIEN 3 and Medtronic's CoreValve Evolut R systems received approval for low-risk patient use on the same day. This new approval considerably expands the size of the treatable population, and analysts predict that up to 50% of all TAVR patients could be classified as low-risk by 2026.

"With the expanded indications for low-risk patients, innovation is set to drive growth, making the market very attractive for new entrants," said Sean Collins, Analyst Manager at iData Research.

As of 2020, Medtronic and Edwards Lifesciences have held over 90% of the TAVR market size in the United States. For this reason, companies such as Abbot and Meril Life Sciences are looking to get a piece of the rapidly growing market.

Pacemaker Procedures Globally Will Reach 2 Million by 2025

Recent study projects millions of patients having pacemaker surgery by 2025 as new technologies and improvements lead to a higher number of devices implanted.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/30/2020 -- A recent study projects that nearly 2 million patients will undergo surgery for pacemaker insertion and replacement by 2025. According to iData Research, a global consulting and market research firm, the capabilities and battery lifespan of pacemakers have increased in the last decade, and wireless technology is expected to make it easier for doctors to maintain and adjust pacemaker function. As a result, new technologies will keep prices high and lead to a higher number of devices implanted.

iData's Global Pacemaker Market Report forecasts a total market size of $2.6 billion in 2025. The report also highlights that most pacemaker surgeries will be carried out in North American hospitals. The trends in procedure numbers also show consistent growth in Asia and Africa. However, across the U.S., a tight competitive landscape could slow down growth rates for the market when it comes to pacemaker sales.

"We use a proprietary method to combine statistical data and industry experts' opinions to estimate current and future market values and procedure numbers. Based on that, we can accurately estimate the market for lifesaving medical devices like pacemakers." said Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData Research.

Among many competitors in the global pacemaker market, Medtronic, Abbott and Boston Scientific are the leaders by varying market shares. Innovation is a vital factor in the competitive landscape. Medtronic pioneered the development of pacemakers and has long been the leading pacemaker manufacturer. Medtronic's remote monitoring CareLink® network is compatible with its pacemakers and allows patients to check their pacemaker's status from home, thereby reducing the number of doctor visits.

Less Time Spent in the Hospital Equals Revenue Growth in Wound Management

Technological developments have reduced the time spent in operating rooms. Although newer products can be more expensive, less is needed during treatment, saving money for both patients and hospitals.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/28/2019 -- Throughout the wound and tissue management market, companies are constantly releasing new products. Patients are benefiting from this competitive landscape as newer devices have shorter healing times, cause less scarring and reduce the amount of pain during application. KitoTech Medical and their recent innovations in wound closure demonstrates the rapid growth in wound and tissue management, and why this market is projected to grow to over $20 billion by 2025 in the U.S. and Europe.

Furthermore, iData Research has found that Wound practitioners are becoming more aware of the different tools they have at their disposal to properly treat these wounds. "Facility-acquired infections, surgical complication and increased time to heal wounds cost hospitals hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional labor, time and medical devices. Therefore, without the advanced technology of biosurgery products, dressings and therapeutic support surfaces that can help wounds heal more rapidly, these facilities would lose millions of dollars," says CEO of iData Research, Kamran Zamanian. Despite the high initial costs, the long-term reward of some of these products is much greater.

Nasal Treatments Bolstering Unit Sales and Patient Care

The volume of procedures performed to treat chronic sinusitis and swollen turbinates is on the rise and will continue to grow to over 4.5 million nasal procedures by 2025.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/30/2019 -- iData Research, an international consulting and market research firm, announced today its new study that indicates a substantial rise in nasal procedures in the United States. Over 3.5 million Americans undergo nasal procedures each year, with over 30 million adults suffering from nasal conditions like chronic sinusitis and swollen turbinates.

The two methods of treatment that are the most popular in patients is balloon dilation devices and drug-eluting stents. These medical solutions for treatment of chronic sinusitis and swollen turbinates are experiencing the fastest growth in the ENT market and are estimated to grow substantially over the next few years.

"There has been a recent shift in the ENT device market, where procedures performed in an office setting is becoming more common. Physicians need to purchase the equipment required to perform office-based procedures for ailments such as chronic sinusitis and swollen turbinates," says CEO of iData Research, Kamran Zamanian. "This has contributed to growth in both the balloon dilation device and the drug-eluting stent markets."

Drug-eluting stents, also known as sinus implants, is a newer market segment that is used to prevent post-operative complications after ethmoidectomy sinus surgery, as well as in the treatment of nasal polyps.

Balloon dilation devices are used to treat chronic sinusitis through an endoscopic procedure called balloon sinus dilation (BSD). BSD is less invasive than traditional treatments and can be performed in outpatient offices.

Reverse Shoulder Implants Driving Patient Results and Market Growth

Over the last few years, small bone and joint orthopedics companies have been driving new developments in shoulder reconstruction, leading to it being one of the larger improvement areas for patient care.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/16/2019 -- iData Research just released a new research study that indicates nearly 80,000 American's every year undergo a reversed shoulder replacement procedure to help them get back to near normal function. The volume of patients opting for this procedure type has expanded in recent years, and will continue to grow to nearly 140,000 per year by 2025. This study concluded that, over the last few years, small bone and joint orthopedics companies have been driving new developments in shoulder reconstruction, leading to it being one of the larger improvement areas for patient care.

"Demand for shoulder reconstruction devices is growing at almost 10% each year, and makes this segment the fastest growing in the small bone and joint market," says Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData Research. "The majority of the growth in shoulder reconstruction is attributed to the strong increase in shoulder revisions and the adoption of stemless shoulder implants. Meanwhile, the hemi shoulder reconstruction market is in a decline and is expected to decrease continuously. "

Reversed shoulder implants are a variation of anatomic devices, where devices for this procedure switch the ball and socket arrangement. They place the socket on the humeral side, rather than the glenoid side. This arrangement provides greater stability than a conventional implant. The reversed implant segment has experienced strong growth through its use in fixing failed initial surgeries, as well as the device's efficacy in cases with multiple ailments, such as arthritis, rotator cuff tears and instability.

Back Surgery Trends That Will Disrupt Spinal Fusion - iData Research

The fastest-growing spinal implant technology is motion preservation devices. This benefits patients, as these procedures are aimed at maintaining range of motion and quality of life.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/07/2019 -- The prevalence of back pain has increased significantly over the past several decades. With surgeries becoming a more commonly selected treatment method in severe cases, we should also question the traditional methods of open surgeries and spinal fusions in the wake of new technology trends.

In a recent suite of reports by iData Research, the U.S. spinal implant market is valued at approximately $6.0 billion and is expected to reach nearly $6.5 billion by 2025. Growth in the spine market can be attributed to many segments, including vertebral compression fracture, spinal surgery instrumentation, motion preservation, electrical stimulation and interbody device segments. Traditional fusion markets are slowing down and will plateau as minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and motion preservation procedures are becoming the norm.

What are the Latest Trends?
Despite many challenges, growth is expected in many market segments, as patients in the U.S. maintain a steady demand for spinal procedures. Growth has slowed in the last few years as newer, minimally invasive innovations have gradually cannibalized the traditional spine market. The largest segment of the U.S. spinal implant market is the thoracolumbar fixation segment. It currently makes up 29.9% of the market, though it is expected that it will drop to 25% by 2025.

Get A Free Sample Analysis from the Global Spinal Implants Market Analysis

The fastest-growing spinal implant technology is motion preservation devices, which grew by more than 3% from 2017 to 2018. A motion preservation device is a direct alternative to spinal fusion, treating the same symptoms while allowing the patient to preserve natural spine motion.

This increased use of motion preservation technology is primarily fueled by cervical artificial discs, where new devices entering the market and improvements in reimbursement policies will result in the cost of procedures to go down, as well as different types of treatments becoming more available.

The Most Commonly Used Spinal Implant Company
Medtronic currently holds the largest market share across the U.S. spinal implants and VCF devices at nearly one-third. Medtronic leads the cervical fixation, thoracolumbar fixation, VCF market while also having a strong presence in the motion preservation device space.

With the spinal implant market leaning toward newer technologies and procedures, motion preservation devices are becoming more commonly used over traditional fusion. This benefits patients, as these procedures are aimed at maintaining range of motion and quality of life. Newer motion preservation technologies will also benefit patients who have had previously untreatable pathologies. As the manufacturers continue to innovate and strive for market share, and reimbursement improves, patients will reap the benefits.

Teleflex, Becton Dickinson Lead US Central Venous Catheter Market Fueled by Antimicrobial Technology

Catheter-related infections result in extremely high costs relative to the price of a catheter; therefore, even a small reduction in infection rates justify use of antimicrobial CVCs, despite their higher price.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/31/2018 -- According to a new series of reports on the U.S. market for vascular access devices by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the average number of central venous catheters (CVC) kits used per successful CVC insertion is expected to decline in the next several years as the adoption of ultrasound guidance increases.

The largest CVC segment in 2017 was the acute CVC segment, which represented almost 90% of the total CVC market. The acute CVC market is a mature and stable market. While unit sales are declining, appreciating average selling prices (ASPs), due to the sales of more complex CVC kits, are driving overall market growth. The placement of alternative catheters, such as peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), in place of CVCs, is the main factor leading to unit sale declines. However, PICCs are not always suitable for use in all patients.

"The CVC market is mature in the U.S., and market growth is hampered by the high risk and severity of infections associated with the use of CVCs," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "While there are still many cases where CVCs are the best choice for placing a central line, alternatives such as PICCs are being increasingly used."

The total CVC market includes acute and chronic CVCs. Acute CVCs are segmented into conventional, antimicrobial and multi-lumen devices. Antimicrobial acute CVCs can be further categorized as antiseptic or impregnated devices. While total CVC unit sales are decreasing, market value growth will be driven by the increased sales of more expensive antimicrobial and multi-lumen CVCs. CVC kits are becoming increasingly complex because of recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is driving the cost of these devices up. The increasing penetration rate of premium-priced antimicrobial CVCs is also inflating the total ASP.

Teleflex Medical is the market leader in the total U.S. CVC market. Teleflex is present in both the acute CVC and chronic CVC segments. The company has dominated the acute CVC segment since 2007, when it acquired Arrow International and its conventional, coated and impregnated catheter product lines. Teleflex entered the chronic CVC market in September 2013 with the launch of the ARROW® JACC (Jugular Axillo-subclavian Central Catheter) with Chlorag+ard® Technology. Teleflex's market share is solely based on its sales of Arrow products, as it did not previously manufacture CVCs. With Teleflex's strong sales in antimicrobial catheters, it will likely maintain its leading market share as the industry continues its shift towards antimicrobials.

Becton Dickinson announced their acquisition of C.R. Bard on April 24th, 2017. The deal closed in December 2017. At the time of the acquisition, C. R. Bard was mainly involved in the chronic CVC market. Becton Dickinson's newfound strong presence in the chronic CVC market translated to a substantial share in the total market. Bard dominated the chronic CVC market for such a long period that its Broviac®, Hickman® and Leonard® brand names and its Groshong® CVC kits have become synonymous with chronic CVCs. Additional competitors in the U.S. CVC market include Centurion Medical, Cook Medical, Medcomp and AngioDynamics among others.

Boston Scientific, Abbott Laboratories Lead U.S. Interventional Cardiology Market Fueled by PCI and Angiography Procedure Volume

Overall, growth of the U.S. interventional cardiology market is primarily driven by diagnostic and interventional procedures performed, which are largely accounted for by angiography and PCI procedures.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/31/2018 -- According to a new series of reports by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the total U.S. market for interventional cardiology devices was valued at $2.9 billion in 2017. Growth of the U.S. interventional cardiology market is highly correlated with annual procedural volume, particularly percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and angiography procedures. PCI procedural growth has a positive effect on the associated device markets, such as coronary stents, balloon catheters, interventional catheters and guidewires and various other devices required per procedure. Angiography procedure volumes are expected to remain stable over the forecast period.

In 2017, the largest segment in the interventional cardiology market was the coronary stent market, which represented approximately 44% of the total market value. Unit sales growth for the total coronary stent market is exceedingly dependent on the annual PCI procedure volume, and any significant changes will exhibit a direct effect on sales volume.

"Following multiple clinical studies that presented evidence of over-stenting in the U.S market, PCI procedure volume and coronary stent sales experienced substantial declines for several years," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "However, fluctuations in procedure volumes have recently stabilized, and low single-digit growth is expected over the forecast period."

The total coronary stent market comprises bare-metal stents, drug-eluting stents, covered stents and bifurcated stents. The value of the total coronary stent market decreased in 2017 and is expected to fluctuate between negative to flat growth. Changes in growth rates will be driven by modest increases in unit sales and ASP depreciation across all segments. ASP depreciation will be driven by bundling and competitive pricing pressure. Bundling is driven by unfavorable reimbursement conditions and larger competitors, who have a wide variety of devices to offer across the interventional cardiology market and are able to negotiate more cost-effective contracts with hospitals and labs.

Boston Scientific is the market leader in the total U.S. interventional cardiology market. Boston Scientific is an extremely well-established competitor in this field, with a strong reputation and large sales force in both the coronary and peripheral markets. The company has recently emphasized its focus on the complex PCI opportunity in the market, for which it offers specialized devices such as CTO systems, atherectomy devices, specialty balloon catheters, embolic protection devices, IVUS and FFR. The company is expected to maintain its leading position in the market.

Abbott Laboratories participates in a wide variety of device segments, often holding one of the top leading positions within each market. The company expanded its position in the overall market through its acquisition of St. Jude Medical in 2017, effectively adding coronary embolic protection devices, introducer sheaths, diagnostic coronary catheters and guidewires and OCT devices to its portfolio.

Dentsply Sirona Lead US Digital Dentistry Market Through Mergers and Acquisitions and Lab Consolidation

Overall, the U.S. digital dentistry market is expected to increase to approach $946 million by 2024 despite lower cost products and laboratory consolidation.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/21/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the U.S. market for digital dentistry devices by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), growth of the market is limited due to the emergence of relatively inexpensive products. Foreign brands have penetrated the market for zirconia CAD/CAM blocks and discs in the United States, driving the overall average selling price (ASP) downwards.

"Generic brands produced in the U.S. have captured a notable portion of the market through promotion strategies, facilitating further ASP declines," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "Inexpensive products have also facilitated ASP cuts and competitive pricing within the rapid prototyping system market."

Overall, the digital dentistry market will be driven by lab consolidation. Small laboratories are being displaced by large corporate chains that have the financial means to invest in technologies and replace their systems, thereby driving growth of the installed base for CAD/CAM milling systems. On the other hand, the number of dental labs is shrinking as the dental lab market consolidates and puts a damper on potential market growth. However, larger consolidated labs often own more than one system, and are more likely to invest in premium machinery. Small labs tend to use systems past their expiration date rather than replacing them with new ones. Ongoing consolidation will also have a positive impact on the placement rate of rapid prototyping systems, thereby encouraging unit sales growth.

Growth of the CAD/CAM system market largely stems from the growing intraoral scanner space. Initially, the intraoral scanner market was largely driven by general practitioners (GPs). However, orthodontists and dental surgeons are increasingly adopting the technology, as GPs are now sharing scanners in multi-practice organizations. As the user base for intraoral scanners expands, unit sales will increase, thereby encouraging market growth. Growth of the CAD/CAM material market also reflects the ongoing shift of labs and dental offices towards milling their prosthetics and molds, rather than relying on traditional fabrication methods.

Dentsply Sirona is the leading competitor in the U.S. digital dentistry market due to its share in the chairside CAD/CAM system market as well as the CAD/CAM milling system, standalone CAD/CAM scanner and intraoral scanner markets. Its dominance is mainly attributed to the large chairside system segment achieved through sales of its CEREC® chairside CAD/CAM system.

Additional competitors in the U.S. digital dentistry market include Sagemax, Glidewell Laboratories, Ivoclar Vivadent, Digital Dental, E4D Technologies, 3Shape, 3M ESPE, VITA North America, Align Technology, Stratasys, 3D Systems, Shofu Dental, Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Carestream Dental, EnvisionTEC, B&D Technologies, Condor Scan, Roland DGA and Formlabs among others. Although each segment within the digital dentistry market is dominated by a different handful of companies, the top competitors were able to distinguish themselves through ongoing mergers and acquisitions. As these deals increase their pre-existing shares of the digital dentistry market, the top competitors will continue to grow in terms of market share.

DePuy Synthes Lead Argentina Minimally Invasive Spinal Implants Market Due to Strong Presence in MIS Interbody Segment

The rise in efficient minimally invasive surgery procedures and an increase in the elderly population has driven the market, despite low reimbursement coverage.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/21/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the Argentina market for minimally invasive spinal (MIS) implants by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the number of people aged 60 or over will be 2.5 to 3.5 times larger than in 2000 in many Latin American countries by 2030. Barring unexpected major demographic change, for the next three to five decades the increase in this demographic population in the region will continue to grow rapidly. This demographic shift will in turn stimulate growth in both fusion and non-fusion spinal implant markets since these procedures are typically performed in order to treat spinal complications that are much more common in elderly patients.

The fastest growing segment in the Argentina MIS implant market is the MIS interbody device segment. Market growth is expected to increase as Argentina's currency stabilizes in relation to the U.S. dollar. This market will continue to be driven by the increasing familiarity of MIS procedures. However, reimbursement issues will not allow this market to reach its full potential unless policies are changed to account for the higher pricing compared to traditional interbody devices. Argentina imports minimally invasive devices, mostly from American and European manufacturers. However, the U.S. dollar has seen strong growth recently. As a result, it has been less profitable for companies to import MIS devices and this has stunted market growth.

"The MIS interbody market is transitioning toward oblique and lateral lumbar interbody fusion devices and away from minimally invasive posterior and transforaminal lumbar interbody devices," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "The oblique and lateral lumbar approaches are expected to see more growth than their posterior and transforaminal lumbar counterparts, although positive growth is expected across segments."

DePuy Synthes had the largest overall share in the Argentina MIS spine market. The company held the leading position across all MIS segments with the exception of spinous process fixation. Via its parent company, Johnson and Johnson, DePuy Synthes has also managed to establish stronger relationships with the public sector than some of its competitors.

Additional leading competitors in Argentina include Medtronic, Zimmer Biomet, NuVasive, Spineart and Globus Medical among others. The number companies present in the MIS segments is expected to grow as prices stabilize and the technology becomes more familiar.

Karl Storz, Olympus Lead Europe Laparoscope Market Despite the Popularity of Refurbishment and Replacement Plans

The total European laparoscope market is expected to grow and approach a value of €60 million by 2023 despite experiencing minor pricing declines over the next several years due to a competitive market.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/15/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the European market for laparoscopic devices by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), decreased hospital budgets will limit the growth of new rod and video laparoscope sales in the region. As a result, lower cost refurbished laparoscopes are gaining popularity, as sterilization techniques are improving to ensure patient health and safety.

"With Karl Storz, Richard Wolf, Stryker, Olympus, ConMed, B. Braun and a few other smaller companies all competing for market share, there is downward pressure on the average selling price for these devices," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "Companies are not only competing with the quality of their products, but the quality of their refurbishment and replacement plans."

The laparoscope rod lens market is predicted to grow at a slower rate compared to video lenses. The video lens market covers all forms of video lenses such as HD, 4k and 3D video lenses. The expected emergence of 3D systems over the next few years will take market share from the standard video laparoscope market. Hospitals looking to purchase the newest technology will now have more alternatives.

Integrated video systems typically include a laparoscope, and provide a single input and feedback point for multiple devices. They often provide price advantages to the buyer, creating cost savings for each separate component. Integrated video systems are increasing in popularity, thus driving the growth of the laparoscope market.

The development of new products, including 5mm laparoscopes and deflective tip video laparoscopes, is expected to drive unit sales based on their clinical benefits. 5mm laparoscopes are narrower in frame, which is beneficial for the patient in reducing scars after surgery. Deflective tip video scopes offer convenience during surgery by providing a broader visual range for surgeons.

Karl Storz is the leading competitor in the European market for laparoscopes. The company offers their original 0° HOPKINS® rod lens scope as well as their newer ENDOCAMELEON® laparoscope. Karl Storz also offers a broad product line of standard and premium laparoscopes, such as those used for bariatric and pediatric surgery.

Olympus is the second leading competitor in the European market for laparoscopes. While Karl Storz provides the majority of the rod lens laparoscopes, Olympus is the main provider of video laparoscopes across Europe. Olympus offers their ENDOEYE® HD II video laparoscope which is an HD laparoscope line. Although there are higher quality video systems on the market, Olympus has one of the best direct sales forces in the industry, allowing them to maintain a tight hold on the video laparoscope market in Europe. Additional competitors in the European laparoscope market include Richard Wolf, Stryker, B. Braun Aesculap, ConMed, Ackermann Instrumente, Endomed, ILO Electronic, Locamed, Maxer, Schoelly, Seeman Technologies, Sopro Comey and Wisap among others.

Becton Dickinson Leads U.S. Infusion Therapy Device Market Fueled by New Regulations Increasing Replacement Rates

The overall U.S. infusion therapy device market is expected to increase and exceed an estimated $2.7 billion by 2024.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/15/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the U.S. market for infusion therapy devices by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), manufacturing and design defects leading to occasional product recalls hamper steady sales in the country. Furthermore, persistence of plastic PVC-based materials containing potentially harmful DEHP leaves customers in doubt and pushes them to other treatment options without the use of advanced medical devices.

Despite these challenges, the industry is gradually introducing more stringent rules and adopting new standards for safer practices. This progress is being achieved through improving national standards of care, such as via the Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice and the Policies and Procedures for Infusion Nursing, as well as through upgrading policies of individual care providers. These developments have led to increased replacement rates of equipment already in use and the introduction of new, safer, and more efficient technologies in the market. More R&D teams and practitioners are working to identify potential problems across the full spectrum of devices for IV therapy and to develop options to improve both technology and procedures.

"In the coming years, IV therapy will continue to be an increasingly effective method of treatment, presenting opportunities for both industry veterans and new entrants," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "Corporate consolidation will increase overall R&D spending and lead to the development of more effective and efficient devices, further growing the market volume and penetration."

The infusion therapy device market in the U.S. is a mixture of single-use devices, such as IV sets and needleless connectors, and capital equipment, such as IV pumps and software. The IV set segment accounted for the largest portion of the overall infusion therapy device market due to the sheer volume of IV sets sold. However, the market for infusion pumps is comparable to the IV set market in value. The infusion pump market is highly saturated and the majority of units sold go towards replacing existing systems.

Becton Dickinson is the leading competitor in the U.S. infusion therapy device market. The company's Alaris® intravenous (IV) set product line includes primary, secondary and IV extension sets, which are bundled with their Alaris® large volume and syringe infusion pumps. Becton Dickinson has benefited from several product recalls by their competitors in the infusion pump market, and strategic acquisitions of companies with complementary product lines. Additional competitors in the U.S. infusion therapy device market include ICU Medical/Hospira, Baxter, B.Braun, Smiths Medical, Fresenius, Nexus Medical, Halyard Health, Codan USA, GVS, Pall Corporation, Medtronic, Merck Millipore, Vygon and ITW Filtertek among others.

Zimmer Biomet Leads Brazil Minimally Invasive Spinal Implants Market Due to Brand Recognition and Third-Party Vendor Support

Strong growth is expected in most segments of the Brazilian minimally invasive surgery spinal implant market as a result of the physiological and surgical advantages of MIS procedures over open procedures.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/30/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the Brazil market for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) spinal implants by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), Brazil imports MIS devices, mainly from American and European manufacturers. However, the U.S. dollar has seen strong growth recently, which has made it harder for local suppliers to import these products, which are more expensive compared to standard technologies. As a result, it has been less profitable for companies to import MIS devices and this has stunted market growth in the region. But prices have begun to stabilize and these trends are projected to reverse, stimulating growth across different MIS segments.

By 2030, in many Latin American countries, the number of people aged 60 or over will be 2.5 to 3.5 times larger than in 2000. Barring unexpected major demographic change, for the next three to five decades the increase in this demographic population in the region will continue to grow rapidly. Since both fusion and non-fusion procedures are typically performed in order to treat spinal complications that are much more common in elderly patients. Therefore, the needs of this new patient pool will stimulate growth in both fusion and non-fusion spinal implant markets.

"A number of newer techniques use a lateral approach in order to reach the spine," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "In 2017, more than ten lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) systems were available on the Brazilian market, including NuVasive's popular eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF®)."

Brazil's healthcare market includes both private and public sectors. Due to the more recent emergence of minimally invasive technologies and the slow response of reimbursement policies, most companies are focusing on the private sector. Smaller companies in this market space are generally focusing on the private healthcare sector in Brazil. Meanwhile, the leading competitor in the market, Zimmer Biomet, has been able to establish relationships with the public sector as well. This gives them brand recognition and means that surgeons are familiar with the company when it comes to newer technologies. The company has also benefitted from strong growth in Brazil due to effective use of third-party vendors.

Medtronic has the second-largest overall share in the Brazilian MIS spine market. The company has a strong presence in the relatively small facet fixation market, but gained most of its overall share from MIS pedicle screw devices. Additional competitors in Brazil include NuVasive, Globus Medical, Orthofix as well as a large number of smaller companies. The number companies present in the MIS segments is expected to grow as prices stabilize and the technology becomes more familiar among doctors in the region.

The full report suite on the Brazilian market for minimally invasive spinal implants includes segments for MIS interbody devices, MIS pedicle screws, spinous process fixation, facet fixation, spine endoscope and MIS spine instrumentation.

SonoSite Leads US Vascular Access Ultrasound Market Despite Competitive Pricing Pressure from Less Expensive Units

The vascular access ultrasound market is comprised of hand-carried and portable ultrasound systems, tip-location devices and accessories for vascular access guidance.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/30/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the U.S. market for vascular access devices by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), ultrasound devices represent the fastest growing segment in the total U.S. market. Replacement rates for vascular access-specific ultrasound machines vary depending on the machine and the hospital.

Large hospitals located in urban centers commonly get new machines because they want to have the newest and most advanced technology. To facilitate this, some ultrasound companies offer trade-in services to reduce the cost of having to buy a new machine every few years. Older machines can then be resold to alternate care facilities or to less technologically advanced countries.

The key disadvantage of ultrasound systems specialized for vascular access is that they are not practical for other ultrasound procedures. Therefore, these systems are unattractive to smaller facilities that do not perform many central catheter placements or do not have the budget for multiple ultrasound systems. The market for vascular access-specific ultrasound systems has been experiencing rapid growth since the introduction of SonoSite's iLook™ system. While Becton Dickinson/Bard and FUJIFILM/SonoSite make up the majority of the market, other companies are starting to enter the marketplace.

Unit sales growth will be driven by the increased use of ultrasound guidance for catheter placement and the introduction of new systems into the market. The units in use will steadily grow over the next several years, but as a higher percentage of older machines are replaced, the market will begin to reach saturation. The average lifespan of an ultrasound machine in the United States is between 5 to 10 years, with the overall average being around 7 years.

"The average selling price (ASP) of ultrasound systems are expected to decline slightly in the near future, driven by competitive pressure and the increasing penetration rate of less expensive handheld units," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "However, new features and technological advancements have kept price declines at bay."

FUJIFILM SonoSite is the leading competitor in the vascular access-specific ultrasound market in terms of revenue generated on units sold and installed base. SonoSite's sales have steadily increased since the company started manufacturing the iLook™. However, the iLook™ is no longer marketed by SonoSite and has been replaced by the more advanced iViz®, SII, M-Turbo® and Edge® II product lines. The company's ultrasound devices provide high-quality imaging and therefore command a higher ASP than most devices in the segment. Unfortunately, the high ASP of SonoSite's devices limits unit sales as many facilities are not able to afford the higher price points.

More on the vascular access device market in the U.S. can be found in a series of reports published by iData Research entitled the U.S. Market Report Suite for Vascular Access Devices and Accessories 2018. The U.S. market for vascular access devices and accessories includes implantable ports, port needles, central venous catheters (CVCs), peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs), midlines, dialysis catheters, ultrasound machines, tip guidance devices, catheter securement devices, syringes and needles.

Massive Declines in the U.S. Gastric Band Market as Surgeons Switch to More Cost-Effective Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy Procedures

Decreased insurance coverage, price of post-surgical support and a continued shift towards sleeve gastrectomy and alternative procedures is significantly affecting the U.S. gastric band market.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/16/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the U.S. market for laparoscopic devices by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), there has been a massive decline in growth rate of the gastric band market since 2008, as most surgeons switched to gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy procedures. Many surgeons felt that the fitting of a gastric band was not only more dangerous than a sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass procedure, but also not as profitable as the other options. Unlike a sleeve gastrectomy procedure, which does not require any follow up, the fitting of a gastric band requires the surgeon to check up on the patient up to 3 times a year over a 2-year period in order to monitor patient progress. Although this arrangement is beneficial for the patient, surgeons find that these follow-ups are not cost-effective.

While the rate of individuals considered to be severely obese (those having a body mass index (BMI) of over 40 or higher) is still increasing in the U.S., the way in which severe obesity is treated surgically has changed significantly. Recently, the sleeve gastrectomy procedure has become the new gold standard of obesity intervention surgery. This procedure has experienced extremely high growth in recent years at the expense of both gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding. The overwhelming preference for the sleeve gastrectomy procedure has had a dramatically negative effect on sales of gastric bands. However, sleeve gastrectomies require an average of five incisions. Gastric bands still offer a significant patient advantage because they can be inserted using a single incision, which results in less scaring, patient pain and faster recovery times.

"Sleeve gastrectomies have severely eroded this market," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "Sleeve gastrectomies is one of the fastest growing bariatric procedures, occupying over 50% of the U.S. market."

Allergan, the previous owner of the leading gastric band, LAP-BAND®, sold the product to Apollo Endosurgery due to steep declines in unit sales, which further reflects the state of this market. Demand for gastric bands will continue to decrease in the coming years as the sleeve gastrectomy procedure continues to be favored as the primary surgical method of obesity intervention.

Intragastric balloons are a newer choice of bariatric surgery, offering temporary removable devices that are inserted endoscopically through the mouth and can remain up to 6 months. The greatest barrier to growth in the gastric balloon market is lack of awareness and cost to the patient. Competition is actively increasing in this space, which is increasing marketing efforts collectively from manufacturers resulting in increasing overall patient volumes. The challenge is that gastric balloon procedures are still not covered by insurance in the United States, creating a barrier to patient choice.

Abbott, Boston Scientific Lead Japan Interventional Cardiology Device Market Due to New Expensive Technologically Advanced Devices

The Japanese interventional cardiology market is projected to reach an estimated $1.61 billion by 2024 due to growth of the IVUS catheter and FFR guidewire markets.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/15/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the Japan market for interventional cardiology devices by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), hospitals in the country tend to gravitate towards expensive and technologically advanced devices. However, the high-cost of imaging devices like optical coherence tomography (OCT) catheters and fractional flow reserve (FFR) guidewires is limiting the market adoption.

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) catheters are widely accepted in Japan and are used in more than 90% of all percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures, other devices such as OCT and FFR are threats to this market. Although prices for OCT catheters have decreased over the last several years, these devices are still substantially more expensive when compared to standard diagnostic coronary catheters. As a result, IVUS continues to dominate the market and are used in hospitals as well as most medical programs in Japan. Changes in pricing and reimbursement for these alternative devices can adversely affect the IVUS market in the future.

"The development and expansion of computerized diagnostic techniques has exerted a downward pressure on procedure numbers, resulting in procedural declines in recent years," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "For a while now, conventional angiographies have been replaced by alternative imaging procedures. Furthermore, the rate of replacement has gradually increased due to technology advancement."

Lack of growth across the entire interventional cardiology market is largely offset by growth in the IVUS catheter market. Overall angioplasty and angiography procedures have been stagnant over the last few years. However, these specialized devices will continue to grow as physicians look for alternate devices to reduce cost and improve efficiency of operations.

Abbott Vascular is the leading competitor in the Japanese interventional cardiology market. The company has majority market shares in the coronary stent, coronary guidewire, coronary vascular closure device, FFR guidewire and OCT catheter markets. Abbott's OCT products, which it recently acquired from St. Jude Medical, including the C7-XR™ coronary imaging system and C7 Dragonfly™ imaging catheter are market leading devices in Japan in 2017.

Boston Scientific is the second leading competitor in the Japanese interventional cardiology market. The company dominated the interventional cardiology market as a result of its market share in the IVUS catheter market. Boston Scientific's most recently released IVUS catheter, the iCross™ is based on their previous catheter technology but with numerous design changes to improve device 'pushability' and kink resistance. Additional competitors in the interventional cardiology market include Terumo, Medtronic, Philips Volcano, Goodman Co., Cardinal Health, Nipro/InfraReDx and Asahi among others.

More on the interventional cardiology device market in Japan can be found in a series of reports published by iData Research entitled the Japan Market Report Suite for Interventional Cardiology Devices 2018.
Edwards Lifesciences, Medtronic Lead US Market for Transcatheter Heart Valve Replacement Devices Fueled by Growing Demand for Minimally Invasive Surgeries

Approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. have calcified or otherwise damaged aortic valves, this large potential patient population will help drive the transcatheter heart valve replacement market.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/13/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the U.S. market for cardiac surgery and heart valve devices by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), there is an emerging trend towards the use of minimally invasive procedures to treat heart conditions. The aging population is driving the market since the elderly in need of treatment are often not suitable for open heart surgery. As a result, procedures such as transcatheter heart valve replacement (THVR) are gaining prominence. These devices are replacing the heart valves used in open heart surgery as the standard way of replacing heart valves.

If given the choice, many patients would prefer the less invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure to open heart surgery. Rapid growth in unit sales of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) devices is expected as patients elect to undergo TAVR procedures rather than surgical aortic valve replacement procedures. If the FDA approves TAVR devices for treatment of lower-risk patients, further unit sales growth is expected.

"Cardiac surgery is a rapidly growing market with new technological innovations occurring constantly," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "Over the next several years, new percutaneous aortic and mitral valve replacement devices are expected to be introduced into the U.S. market."

Competition between manufacturers will cause a slight decline in average selling price (ASP). However, large expenditures in research and development from major players in the market will limit the ASP decline as more advanced technology will command price premiums. Therefore, the large increase in unit sales will apply upward pressure on market value. These new products, their delivery systems and the surgical techniques used for placing them will allow for a greater number of patients to be treated successfully. The increased procedural volume combined with the high ASP of percutaneous products is expected to propel growth in market value.

Edwards Lifesciences is the leading competitor in the U.S. TAVR market. Edwards Lifesciences was the first company to develop a percutaneous aortic valve replacement device. Their SAPIEN 3® is a TAVR device used for aortic valve replacement while the SAPIEN XT® is used for both aortic and pulmonary valve replacement. Edwards Lifesciences also offers a wide range of delivery systems alongside their heart valves.

Medtronic is the second leading competitor in the TAVR market. The company offers the CoreValve Evolut R® and PRO® Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement products. For pulmonary valve replacement, Medtronic has their Melody® Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Therapy which has been approved by the FDA in 2017.

More on the transcatheter heart valve replacement market in the U.S. can be found in a series of reports published by iData Research entitled the U.S. Market Report Suite for Cardiac Surgery and Heart Valve Devices 2018. The full report suite on the U.S. market for cardiac surgery and heart valve devices includes tissue heart valves, mechanical heart valves, annuloplasty repair devices, transcatheter mitral valve repair devices, transcatheter aortic valve replacement devices, devices used to perform on and off-pump coronary artery bypass procedures, endoscopic vessel harvesting devices, anastomosis assist devices, transmyocardial revascularization devices, ventricular assist devices, inter-aortic balloon pumps, artificial heart devices, remote hemodynamic monitoring devices, patent foramen ovale closure devices, atrial septal defect closure devices, ventricular septal defect closure devices, left atrial appendage closure devices and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machines and disposables.

Zimmer Biomet, DePuy Synthes Lead Mexico Minimally Invasive Spinal Implants Market Despite Increased Competition from New Technologies

Overall, the minimally invasive spinal implants market in Mexico is expected to reach an estimated $14.7 million by 2024.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/03/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the Mexico market for minimally invasive spinal (MIS) implants by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the country imports minimally invasive devices, mostly from American and European manufacturers. However, the U.S. dollar has seen strong growth recently. As a result, it has been less profitable for companies to import MIS devices and this has stunted market growth.

Other market segments are also experiencing significant changes. The MIS interbody market is seeing a shift toward oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) and lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) devices and away from minimally invasive posterior lumbar interbody fusion (MIPLIF) and minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MITLIF) devices. The oblique and lateral lumbar approaches are expected to see more growth than their posterior and transforaminal lumbar counterparts, although positive growth is expected across all segments.

"While smaller companies in the space are generally focusing on the private healthcare sector in Mexico, larger companies such as Zimmer Biomet have been able to establish relationships with the public sector as well," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "This gives them brand recognition and means that surgeons are familiar with the company when it comes to newer technologies."

Zimmer Biomet is the leading competitor in the Mexican minimally invasive spine market due to their leading share in the MIS pedicle screw and spinous process fixation segments. Zimmer Biomet's Aspen™ has been very successful and has gained considerable share since its introduction. The company has also benefitted from strong growth in Mexico due to effective use of third-party vendors. However, since the recent introduction of new products in the market, Zimmer Biomet's share of the total market has stabilized. Zimmer Biomet's market share will continue to be contested as more innovative competitor products enter the market.

DePuy Synthes is the second-largest overall market leader in the Mexican MIS spine market. The company holds the leading position in the MIS interbody segment and the relatively small facet fixation segment. Via its parent company, Johnson & Johnson, DePuy Synthes has also managed to establish stronger relationships with the public sector than some of its competitors.

Additional competitors in the Mexican minimally invasive spinal market include Medtronic, NuVasive, Globus Medical, Stryker and Ulrich Medical among others. The number of companies present in the MIS segments is expected to grow as prices stabilize and the technology becomes more familiar.

Humira, Enbrel, Remicade Immunology Drugs Face Stiff Competition in the U.S. from New Biosimilars Due to Patent Expiry

Overall, the U.S. immunology drug market is projected to exceed an estimated $38 billion by 2023 due to the entry of new biosimilars and JAK inhibitors into the market.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/02/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the U.S. market for immunology drugs by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), projections show a gradual fall in HUMIRA® market share after 2020 due to the entry of infliximab and etanercept biosimilars, as well as other new drugs. The revenues from HUMIRA® currently account for an estimated 34% of the total U.S. immunology drug market. However, since the patent expiry for HUMIRA® in 2016, there are currently two HUMIRA® biosimilars, namely Amjevita™ and Cyltezo™. However, these drugs are not able to launch due to Humira's strong ancillary patents which will protect them from losing their exclusivity until 2023. These products will cause the average selling price (ASP) of HUMIRA® to decline over the next several years, further deepening the market share erosion caused by biosimilars after 2023.

"Patents of many blockbuster biologics, which currently dominate the market, have expired or are on the verge of patent expiry," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "Since many of these drugs are on the verge of their patent expiry, new biosimilar products are expected to be launched in the immunology space over the next several years."

The main patent for Enbrel® has also expired. But the drug is currently protected by two "submarine patents," so called because they covertly made their way through the patent office over a long period of time, hidden from view. Even though the inventions involved were made in the early 1990s, the patents were not granted until 2011 and 2012, and will last until 2028 and 2029.

The patent for REMICADE®, which was slated to expire by 2018, was recently determined as invalid and has therefore lost exclusivity in the United States. REMICADE® has been impacted highly in Europe after the introduction of its biosimilar Inflectra®. Inflectra® has also launched in the U.S. and REMICADE® market shares in the U.S. are falling. The drug maker is expected to decrease prices as the more affordable Inflectra® is capturing market share. However, it could take time for physicians to change preferences in prescribing Inflectra® over REMICADE® in the United States.

The competition is intense in the current immunology drug market. The market is dominated by huge pharmaceutical giants who have a strong financial, marketing and operational presence. The entry of new biosimilars in the same space, will cause pricing pressures, and will compel competitors to reduce the prices of their originator biologics.

Glidewell Laboratories Leads US Dental Prosthetics Market Fueled by Lab Consolidation and Rising Technological Costs

Overall, the U.S. dental prosthetics market is expected to reach an estimated $11.4 billion by 2024 driven by improvements in technology and dental health.

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/26/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the U.S. market for dental prosthetics by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), an ongoing trend driving market value is the increasing movement towards digitization in the dentures segment due to their relatively high average selling prices. The digital denture market encompasses both dentures that are produced via 3D printers and those developed from CAD/CAM technology. The rapid increases in metal prices, particularly gold, is also contributing to notable positive growth in the market. On the other hand, declines in the costly veneer market will slow total dental prosthetic market growth.

"The denture market is largely carried by an aging population and growth of flexible partial dentures," explains Kamran Zamanian, President and CEO at iData Research. "Patients are continuing to opt for flexible partial dentures as a substitute for more expensive bridge work."

Overall dental prosthetics market growth will be reinforced by increases in the markets for dentures and denture teeth. Dentsply Sirona is the denture teeth market leader, best known for their offerings in the premium denture teeth space.

Demand in the crown and bridge segment has continued to shift away from full-cast and PFM (porcelain fused to metal) restorations to less expensive all-ceramic restorations, specifically zirconia. Nonetheless, PFMs still occupy a notable portion of the total crown and bridge market. As such, increases in the cost of metal will continue to bring about market value growth.

Cost is also a factor in the veneers market as it is a more expensive prosthetic option than crowns, bridges and inlays/onlays. For the past few years, dental patients have increasingly preferred other prosthetics options, a trend that has been hurting the veneer market value. Advancements in the aesthetic quality of crowns and bridges will continue to reduce demand for veneers in the United States.

The total U.S. market for dental prosthetics was dominated by four main competitors. Glidewell Laboratories, National Dentex Corporation, Modern Dental and Dental Services Group. Although the overall market is saturated with laboratories and companies, the top four competitors were able to make strides on the market through ongoing mergers and acquisitions. As these deals expand their pre-existing lab volume, these competitors continue to grow in terms of market share.

In addition to mergers and acquisitions, labs across the U.S. continue to consolidate, further facilitating growth of the leading competitors. Many small-scale labs are being absorbed as they lack the financial means to invest in new technology such as CAD/CAM systems. Without these high production systems, smaller facilities struggle to maintain profitability as they are unable to produce a sufficient number of unit sales to cover fixed costs.

Glidewell Laboratories is the leading competitor in the U.S. dental prosthetics market by participating in each dental prosthetics segment. Glidewell Laboratories also partakes in the CAD/CAM materials segment with its BruxZir® blocks and discs, which in turn, will facilitate the company's production of prosthetics such as crown and bridges. Additional competitors in the U.S. dental prosthetics market include Affordable Dentures Inc., Aspen Dental, Smile Brands, ClearChoice and DenMat among others.

More on the dental prosthetics market in the U.S. can be found in a series of reports published by iData Research entitled the U.S. Market Report Suite for Dental Prosthetics.
AbbVie, Johnson & Johnson Lead US Immunology Drug Market Due to High Cost of Biologic Treatments

The U.S. immunology drug market is expected to grow to $68 billion by 2023 due to the entry of new biosimilars and JAK inhibitors

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/17/2017 -- According to a new exciting and unprecedented 1000+ page report series on the U.S. market for immunology drugs by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the immunology market is facing strong competition and cost pressure from new entrants, which limits the commercial potential of these drugs. Another concern is the significant unmet needs to treat relevant diseases, in terms of safer treatments and more convenient administration.

Immunology drugs are one of the costliest treatment options for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and psoriasis. However, these are the only effective treatments that act on the targets that cause these diseases. Other treatments are used to treat disease symptoms rather than the disease itself.

Orally administered Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors are expected to capture a considerable share of the U.S. market over the next several years. The current marketed JAK inhibitor, Xeljanz, has a high year over year growth rate. Other promising examples such as baricitinib and fligotinib will also be competing heavily to mark their presence for years to come.

AbbVie is the leading competitor in the U.S. immunology drug market. The company has been doing well with its immunology product, Humira. Currently, Humira is approved for indications such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease, plaque psoriasis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, ulcerative colitis, axial spondyloarthropathy, pediatric Crohn's disease, pediatric enthesitis-related arthritis, hidradenitis suppurativa, non-infectious intermediate, posterior and panuveitis. The company's revenue from Humira approached $16 billion during the 2016 fiscal year, accounting for almost 63% of the company's overall revenue that year.

Johnson & Johnson is another major competitor in the immunology drug market. The company has three of the market leading immunology biologics. Although Remicade and Simponi are expected to lose a significant amount of market share, due to their patent expiry and biosimilar competition, their product Stelara is expected to have moderate market growth during the next several years. Additional competitors in the U.S. immunology drug market include Amgen, Roche, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Biogen, Takeda, UCB and Pfizer among others.

"There is a number of drugs in the U.S. product pipeline report that could enter the market during the next few years," explains Kamran Zamanian, CEO at iData Research. "These drugs will play a major role in driving growth in the market."

Second line treatments targeting tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and IL-receptors are crowding the current market and their biosimilars will be strongly impacting the market in the future. A number of biosimilars are ready to be launched upon the clearing of patent law suits imposed by original manufacturers. Although, the originator drugs such as Enbrel and Humira are protected by many complex ancillary patents, these patents will lose their exclusivity between the years 2020 and 2022. The adoption of biosimilars among the U.S. population will depend on the strength of marketing strategies and changing physician's prescription patterns.

The full report suite on the U.S. market for immunology includes for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), Crohn's disease (CD), psoriasis (PsO) and ulcerative colitis (UC), such as Orencia (abatacept), Humira (adalimumab), Cimzia (certolizumab), Enbrel (etanercept), Simponi (golimumab) Remicade (infliximab), Rituxan (rituximab), Actemra/RoActemra (toclizumab), Stelara (ustekinumab), Entyvio (vedolizumab), Tysabri (natalizumab) and others. Each report discusses in detail the unit dosage sold by drug type, average dosage price, market values as well as growth rates.

DePuy Synthes, Medtronic Leads Europe MIS Interbody Device Market Fueled by Increased Procedure Volumes and Product Innovation

As minimally invasive devices continue to gain popularity in the surgical community, the number of MIS interbody fusion procedures performed in Europe will reach nearly 38,000 by 2023

Vancouver, BC -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/11/2017 -- According to a new series of reports on the European market for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) spinal implants by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the number of MIS interbody procedures performed in Europe approached 20,000 in 2016. This includes minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MITLIF), minimally invasive posterior lumbar interbody fusion (MIPLIF), lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF), and oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF), including NuVasive's popular XLIF® procedure.

"The major driving forces behind growth in MIS interbody procedures are the perceived physiological benefits to the patient, including reduced trauma, shorter hospital stays, lower post-operative medication use and earlier return to motion," explains Jeffrey Wong, Strategic Analyst Manager at iData Research. "MIS interbody fusion procedures are expected to increasingly replace traditional interbody fusion procedures."

In 2016, MIPLIF and MITLIF procedures comprised the greatest portion of the total MIS interbody procedures performed in Europe, comprising nearly 80% of the overall MIS interbody device market. However, due to the faster growth of newer LLIF and OLIF devices, these segments will both decrease in proportion over the next several years. NuVasive's popular XLIF® approach, which accounts for the vast majority or NuVasive's revenue, is the most popular product in the LLIF segment.

The European MIS interbody fusion procedure market has continued to experience high growth rates in comparison with the traditional spine market, which is comparatively much more saturated and established. Growth is expected to stabilize and flatten out going forward and market growth rates will be hampered by the rapidly declining average selling prices of these products.

DePuy Synthes is the leading competitor in the Europe MIS interbody fusion market. The bulk of DePuy Synthes' share in the total MIS interbody fusion market is contributed by its share in the MIPLIF/MITLIF segment. Future growth for DePuy Synthes in the MIS interbody fusion market will be highly dependent on the company's innovation in the MIS market.

Medtronic has the second-largest share in the total Europe MIS interbody fusion market. Medtronic's presence in the LLIF market is supported by the Direct Lateral Interbody Fusion (DLIF®) procedure. The company thrives in the MIS spinal implant market as a result of its minimal access spine technologies (MAST) systems. These include the Minimal Exposure Tubular Retractor (METRx™) system, the CD Horizon® Sextant™ percutaneous cannulated screw system, the CD Horizon® Legacy™ percutaneous PEEK rod system and the CD Horizon® Longitude®. Additional competitors in the European MIS interbody device market include NuVasive, Stryker, Globus Medical, K2M and Zimmer Biomet among others.
