Discover Is Planning to Start Accepting PIN Authentication for EMV Cards in the Near Future

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/27/2016 -- The fact that customers have a choice to decide whether they use a PIN authentication or not hasn't stopped them from opting for the signature option. While this is not the case for every single person, most people have in fact decided not to implement a PIN authentication with their credit cards. However, David Nelms, the CEO of Discover Financial Services states the PIN path is the most logical to follow when the EMV cards start to popularize around the U.S and the world.

Almost six months have passed since EMV cards were introduced to the American market and, since then, people have decided to go for the chip-signature combination. However, continuing with this safety method would not be a smart move for merchants or customers, as making use of a PIN authentication is a safer method to complete transactions with EMV cards. Furthermore, the PIN method is one that is used all over the world, which is why it is surprising that the U.S hasn't decided to fully implement it as a viable option for their cardholders.

David Nelms says that, although EMV cards are pretty safe as they currently are, adding a Pin authentication would make them even safer both for merchants and customers. For that reason, opting solely for the signature method would mean losing a great security opportunity that is well-used in other parts of the world.

Currently, Discover cards use two methods for validating payment. Debit cards use Pin authentications while credit cards use signatures. While this measure has been effective for quite some time, David has stated that having two different approaches can be confusing for the majority of the population, especially for those who have both a credit and a debit card. For that reason, the most logical choice would be to incorporate the PIN authentication to both credit and debit cards.

Some people say companies like Discover are going through a lot of completely unnecessary struggle, as mobile payments and transactions will soon replace all kinds of payment methods. However, this statement is far from being true, for newer payment methods do not tend to replace older ones, they just coexist together and are improved at the same time.

All in all, we can safely say implementing the PIN authentication into credit and debit cards would be a smart move from Discover. Of course, there will be some people who will not like this idea. However, in general, it will provide with an even safer way of completing transactions.

Although not mandated, Netcom PaySystem can provide state of the art EMV ready equipment at your discretion. If you're ready, so are we!

Consumers Attitude Towards Credit Card Fraud

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/27/2016 -- Everyone who has been a victim of credit card fraud would vouch on how excruciating and terrifying a situation like that can be. One would think things like fraud would be solved relatively soon, considering advancements in technology. However, this is very far from being true. In fact, online purchases have made fraudulent transactions even more common than they were few years ago.

Countless experts predicted that card-not-present transactions would make fraudulent transactions way more common. What they didn't predict though was consumers´ attitude towards this increase in cybercrime. Of all the people who suffered from fraud, 56% said they considerably reduced their online shopping, stopped using their credit card so often or even stopped using it completely. This shows us the majority of the consumers reckon a situation like that will occur again in the future. It´s worth to mention that 78% of the online shoppers have said they don´t feel safe enough when purchasing online.

Closing an account won´t have a significant negative effect on the consumers´ life, for they feel safer that way. The real losers are the card issuers, as they are losing revenues with each consumer that decided to close their card account as a result of a fraudulent transaction. Of course, chances are they will keep using cash to pay for their consumables. However, this won't generate any revenues for card issuers, which is why they are so concerned about this growing problem.

For this reason, there is an immense focus on trying to increase the safety when shopping online. However, to this day, nobody has come up with a viable solution that makes online shopping a completely safe experience both for buyers and merchants.

All in all, we can safely say fraudulent transactions hugely compromise more than just a handful of people.

The Demise of Cash as We Know It

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/28/2016 -- If time travel was a thing and we somehow decided to travel to the 1960s and tell people cash has been replaced by a small piece of plastic, chances are they wouldn`t believe a word. And who could blame them? After all, cash was created to be the default payment method in the world. Nevertheless, here we are: a future in which cash is seldom, and people prefer to pay using debit and credit cards.

However, this situation is not so notable in the case of elders. According to a recent research, 64% of the people between ages of 18 thru 29 years actually prefer to use debit cards instead of cash. Interestingly enough, the numbers do nothing but decrease when we increase the age range. 57% of the people between the ages of 30 thru 49 prefer to use debit or credit cards over actual currency. And finally, only 23% of the people older than 65 years of age prefer to use debit or credit cards.

It`s amazing how young people care less and less about cash when they are about to purchase something. In fact, even small purchases of less than $5 are paid with cards (when it comes to young generation).

But why? Why are young people able to forget about cash so easily? And why is it so hard for older people to start using this new traditional payment method? It`s pretty simple actually: because older people grew up paying with cash, they are now accustomed to it and are not willing to change this long-lasting tradition. "Why change something that has worked perfectly for my entire life"? Honestly, no one can blame elders for thinking in such matter, as human beings we are creatures of habit, and that's exactly what using cash is to elders, a habit.

The younger audience, on the other hand, did not grow up using cash. Sure, they`ve most certainly used cash at least once in their lives. But when they did, it wasn`t their money. It was typically part of a (small) allowance that was generally given by their parents.

However, when these kids started getting older, they eventually felt the need to save their salary in a bank account and thus, get a debit card. Moreover, payments through mobile phones have also influenced younger generation to stick with the debit and credit cards instead of opting for cash.

Because most purchases can be done online nowadays, cash has become almost pointless. It`s not like a person can pay using cash on the internet. Because older people are not accustomed to buying things on the internet, they do not need debit or credit cards (needless to say, they don`t need PayPal either).

All in all, we can say debit and credit cards are here to stay, and a time will come in which the elders of the future will too need this payment method to live. Not only that, but because payment methods keep improving with the flow of times, chances are they will eventually become obsolete as well.

EMV Can Help Merchants Large or Small Prevent Fraud

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/28/2016 -- Since the acceptance of credit and debit cards as a form of valid payment methods, the amount of fraud-related thefts has drastically increased. In fact, according to a recent research, $16 billion in credit card fraud was reported solely in 2014. This makes us think whether there is actually a legit way to be completely sure that a card won't be compromised.

Although there is no such thing as being 100% safe from fraud, when the drastic rise in credit card fraud-related crimes was making its presence known, Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV) have decided to create a "safer" payment method that will ensure customers their cards won`t be bypassed that easily. This method is called EMV standard. EMV chip cards are basically credit cards that include a chip embed within each card, which prevents hackers and thieves from bypassing card`s security. Although they might not be 100% effective every time, they are much safer than the regular credit and debit cards we use every day.

According to latest statistics, small companies are not showing as much concern for their security as companies like Apple or Microsoft are. Although their reasoning is quite logical, it`s inaccurate. No matter how much money one might have, thieves will always be there to steal it. That is a fact that smaller companies should always bear in mind when choosing a payment and a security method for their facilities.

With all this in mind, it is safe to say that businesses, large or small, should definitely consider acquiring EMV terminal(s) for their business. If not, they will slowly start losing even their most faithful customers. Not only that, but not implementing an EMV terminal puts their business at risk and at the mercy of cyber thieves.

Although not mandated, Netcom PaySystem can provide state of the art EMV ready equipment.
