Phishing Recedes in the Third Quarter, but Payment Services Attract 10% of the Attacks

Yakima, WA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/01/2017 -- The organization known as the Anti-Phishing Working Group announced that in the last three months, there was a 22% decrease in phishing websites in comparison with the last six months.

In the last 9 months, however, phishing website counts reached their all-time high with the maximum number of fraudulent websites and attacks. These sites reveal passwords, PINs, credit card information and more from users that enter these sites. The sector that gained most victims was the retail and service sector alongside e-commerce sites, responsible of a total of 43% of all attacks from July to September. Down to the second place of all phishing attacks is the financial sector with 21% of attacks. Third place, the internet service providers, responsible for 13% of attacks. The payment sector came in fourth with 10% of attacks.

The phishing websites use malware software to leak important information that belongs to the users. The most frightening news is that 71% of all malware detected in the last six months were Trojans, which is software designed to seem legitimate but really isn't. Malware has been a cause of plenty trouble in the hotel and food-and-beverage services this year. The country most affected by malware is China with an infection rate of 47%, while the smallest rate is awarded to Norway, with a rate of 20%.

Uber's Geolocation Technology Impacts Corporate Trips Abroad

Yakima, WA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/05/2016 -- Uber has a very easy transaction process and fast localization that attracts many consumers. ACL Services Ltd. recently found a way to take advantage of cloud-based apps by visualizing all the small details that lead to fraud involved in service app experiences.

A result from this study showed that after acquiring all the information from expenses to locations of business-related trips from Uber, it was shown that people are actually going to and from the places in question.

When the new policy was introduced, many realized that taxi expenses decreased for business travel. Some companies eliminated the mix-ups related with all these trips whether they were or weren't business related.

ACL has developed a new platform that allows companies to view where they lose money due to inefficiencies caught on business trips. Which allow the correction of these flaws on the system.

After ACL's platform became available in September, businesses became more aware of the money put into trips and could track the inefficiencies in each trip to take advantage of changes such as leaving and arriving times.

With more information in their hands, large-scale companies can now see a bigger and clearer picture of what's going on instead of assuming there aren't any inefficiencies in the system. This became a major benefit for all companies that use this platform.

Merchants Are Finally Getting Interested on How the Transaction World Works

Merchants no longer want to feel confused when processing transactions.

Yakima, WA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/03/2016 -- Merchants no longer want to feel confused when processing transactions. What they demand, more than anything, is knowledge. Knowledge on how the transaction mysteries actually work.

Essentially, these mysteries refer to knowing whom to call when a problem appears, what to know about EMV chip cards, and how to protect their point-of-sale systems from hackers.

Most merchants interpret payment processing as a very intricate process that is impossible to learn, pairing this with the issue of trying to run a retail business, the complexity increases even more.

In the words of J. Brandon Maxwell, president and chief executive of M Culinary Concepts, a Phoenix-based catering business: "Most merchants don't want to think about it, they don't want to be burdened by it".

Another issue for merchants is the importance of not knowing how to prevent incidents from happening, precisely because of their lack of information they have on payment processing. They are not very familiarized with the whole spectrum of things, and thus they cannot prevent accidents from happening at their companies. A clear example of this is Jim Buhr, chief financial officer and chief information officer at Bashas' Supermarkets, a Chandler, Ariz.-based grocery chain. He expresses the necessity of knowing what is happening at any given moment with the payment process. He expressed his discomfort saying that, if they shut down for an hour, they can lose millions. The chain's payment system did indeed fail for a few hours in August, costing the company $1 million in sales, some of which was not recoverable, Buhr said. Seventy percent of its overall transactions are made with credit, debit, or electronic benefits transfer cards.

It is in these cases where merchants are requesting external aid in order to help them plow through this problem.

Buhr ultimately discovered which payments organizations could help him in the aftermath of a data breach that occurred a few years ago. "Merchants don't really find out who can help until breach already happens," he said. Contacting the card brands and processors Bashas' Supermarkets used yielded little aid until a fraud expert at First Data Corp. guided him.

Another concerning issue for them is the confusion surrounding EMV adoption in the payment industry.

The moral of the story here is that the payment industry needs to do a better job of educating merchants about the so-called "mysteries" of this industry, rather than making things more complicated.

Fraud Has Become One of Today's Biggest Issues and Its Growing

Yakima, WA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/03/2016 -- By now everyone knows how fraudulent transactions have become one of the biggest and most annoying plague of the transactions world. For decades' merchants large or small, have been trying to combat these scammers with no results, and their appearance in the market is way too numerous to be eliminated. The absolute worst part is that most criminals do not discriminate when it comes to pulling off their dirty tricks. At times, they can target huge merchants such as Amazon or small businesses that are just getting started.

Now the question becomes, if Amazon is not able to identify and fight these criminals out of their platform, how could a small business be able to avoid these scammers and get out of it unharmed? The situation gets even worse when talking about filthier tricks like transaction laundering.

Transaction laundering is a complicated process that consists of using an e-commerce platform to sell illegal goods while making it all seem legit. They do this by setting up their own e-store in which they sell normal products. However, this store is only created so that their real customers are able to pay with their credit card for whatever it is that they are selling outside of their e-store.

Of course, the owner of the e-store can get into serious trouble if somehow it become known that their e-store was being used for transaction laundering. And the big issue here is there is absolutely no way to find out who is using their platform to sell drugs or weapons and who is not, which is why small merchants are in a notorious situation of disadvantage in contrast with big companies like Amazon or eBay.

The only option they have is to check for repetitive actions or patterns that could give out their actions and help them eradicate these criminals from their website. Until a clear solution is created, being alert at all times is their best bet.

Retailers Are Battling Honor-All-Payments

Yakima, WA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/28/2016 -- It was something that was bound to happen. The battle between merchants and major card brands has been building up for months now, with each new situation leading up to the heated climax on Thursday, when an advocacy group for big-box retailers condemned that a new twist on network rules was ruining the progress of mobile payments.

The problem comes down to a set of regulations that have been promoted by the big card brands such as American Express Co., MasterCard Inc., and Visa Inc. that require merchants to accept all of the cards if they happen to accept any of them, a very aggressive move from those companies. But now, instead of retreating, they are pushing this outrageous norm to digital wallets, prompting the disappearance of lower-cost services and discouraging merchants from switching on near-field communication technology at their terminals, as put by the Merchant Advisory Group, a Minneapolis-based organization that represents more than 100 retail and travel companies. Among these big companies, there is Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp.

These regulations would mean that now merchants are obliged to accept every NFC wallet that supports whichever brand of cards they happen to use. The same thing would be applied by wallets using other technologies, such as mag-stripe regulators or quick-response codes. However, these new impositions are still somewhat unclear: have they been codified along with other network rules? Are they already implemented or they will be in the future? Nobody seems to address these concerns in a clear way.

Merchants further elaborate on their complaints, stating that the honor-all-wallets rules will force them to accept unwanted wallets that are being issued by their competition, giving them access to proprietary customer's data, as well as requiring them to accept devices whose protection system is dodgy. But that's not all.

The rule further proves to be counter-productive for competing for wallet providers that offer low-cost alternatives, such as PIN-debit or automated clearing house services, because merchants would be forced to turn down these services, forcing little-known newcomers to compete with nationwide firms.

But, as complex as this sounds, the MAG says that this should concern corner-store shopkeepers as well, as they usually have the same concerns the big merchants have, the only difference being that big merchants uncover these issues first.

However, Rick Oglesby, principal at consultancy AZPayments Group and senior analyst at Double Diamond Payments, says that the battle over the new honor-all-wallets rules is not ending soon. In fact, it may even have long-lasting effects, such as yet more litigation. And while everything is happening, "we will continue to see merchants build their own property solutions (such as Walmart Pay and Target Pay)", he says.

Nonetheless, a surprising letter issued by MasterCard takes note of the matter on a slightly conciliatory tone. "MasterCard recognizes the importance of providing flexibility to payments participants, especially merchants who seek to improve the consumer shopping experience," the network statement says. "We look forward to continuing to work with our merchants and issuers alike to ensure our rules are aligned with current trends and advanced next-generation technology."

How to Build Loyal Digital Customers in Modern Society

Yakima, WA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/28/2016 -- In this day and age, it is not as easy to build a strong and very stable group of customers as it once was. Society has changed, our means of communication have changed, and the complex relationships between provider and consumer have also changed drastically.

Nowadays, the culture of the deal seekers has grown in a big way. Consumerism has gotten way more practical in that sense and people will often "betray" a preferred brand in favor of a less priced product or service. But it's definitely not only about the prices. The overall service also plays a major part in the final decision of whether to stay with the brand or not.

But, just like there are several deal seekers, there are also loyalists, who tend to gravitate towards premium services and the overall experience a brand can offer. These are the consumers that merchants are trying to reach. These shoppers engage and buy directly from the companies that they trust. To them, a reliable brand which consistently offers high-quality services is more important than a good deal, and they will be willing to help brand to grow. They sign up for membership programs, access research-and-development programs to help shape future products, and jump at the opportunity to buy limited-edition items or one-of-a kind product bundles.

It is absolutely critical to get to these kinds of consumer 'gold mines'. But what exactly does a merchant need to do in order to attract their attention? These three following steps will help merchants attract loyal customers they been looking for.

1. Greatness from the start:

The goal is to provide a comfortable experience for the consumer to return again and again to merchant's website, which helps to establish trust-building. It is important to make sure that a website has a stylish design that proves to be appealing and that information is well organized.

2. Analytics is a must:

The second a potential customer searches for a merchant's website, that person should stop being a potential customer and become a loyal costumer instead, one that will often search for merchant's brand even without any kind of discounts. That is why it is important for merchants to gather the necessary information to know what is the potential customer searching for. If there is a great bulk of non-interesting information or services for the customer, chances are, the customer will not be interested in investing time to learn more about products and services offered. It is important to look at various insights that will help merchants distinguish between loyal customers versus deal seekers.

3. Opinions are important:

Even after the sale is done, a merchant still needs to pay attention to a couple of things. First of all, it is important to continue to communicate with the customer by asking them if they were satisfied with the services received or if there is something a business can improve upon. Also, be willing to check user forums or social channels to know more about what customers are saying about merchant's products or services.

MasterCard Joins Visa in Easing EMV Testing and Chargebacks for Merchants

Yakima, WA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/28/2016 -- Following the steps of Visa, Mastercard Inc. is releasing on Monday a new policy aimed at speeding up the testing and certification of EMV chip card terminals at U.S merchant locations.

The new change the company is making to their policy will allow the firm to cut test time from a couple of weeks to a couple of hours, following a similar move made by Visa last week. Not only will they be changing their policy, but they have also stated that drastic improvements will be made to its EMV-related chargeback policy to ease the flow of counterfeit card chargebacks now for the first time hitting merchants that are not yet capable of accepting chip cards.

MasterCard says this new policy will give a lot more freedom to the consumers to either follow the network's testing procedures or conduct some other kind if they like to, thus giving them a lot more responsibilities. By doing so, the company says it is reducing 58% of required tests. Visa said that their own changes led up to a significant reduction of their roster of recommended test scripts from 35 to 14.

Addressing fraud chargebacks, Chiro Aikat, MasterCard senior business leader for U.S product delivery, says that they are updating their rules in order to minimize the cost to merchants who have not yet transitioned to EMV. The update refers to some adjustments MasterCard has been making to its own network intelligence to more accurately control the chargebacks from going to merchants when the transactions don't meet the expected network criteria for merchant liability.

For instance, a chargeback will be stopped from going back to the merchant when the cashier processes a counterfeit contactless chip card on a contactless terminal.

Chargebacks have definitely been one of the most important concerns for merchants in the EMV rollout. Since an Oct. 1 liability shift, issuers have been allowed to flow such chargebacks to merchants in cases where the merchants aren't yet capable of processing chip cards. In the past, issuers have always absorbed this type of fraud.

MasterCard has recently stated that the majority of U.S credit cards carrying their brand (70% to be accurate) are now chip cards, a significant growth of 58% since Oct.1's fraud-liability change. Also, the number of U.S merchant locations accepting chip cards stands at 1.4 million, a rise of 240% since Oct.1.
