Many of the trails around Ouray have been around for numerous decades, created by the miners that once called Ouray home. Of all these trails, the Perimeter Trail is perhaps the most popular. The trail extends just over four miles and features plenty of opportunities to snap some fantastic pictures of the mountains and valleys. This trail will take about three hours to complete at the very least, so it's important to plan ahead. There are, however, multiple points that allow hikers to return to Ouray, in case they would rather hike—or unable to hike—the full five miles.

Another noteworthy hiking trail is Bear Creek, which is among the few trails designated as a Natural Recreation Trail, reinforcing just how scenic it is. However, the trail is not recommended for first-timers. The round trip journey is just over fourteen miles long and there are steep drop-offs and switchbacks to watch out for. Hikers can visit Grizzly Bear Mine after two miles followed by the Yellow Jacket Mine after four miles, both of which serve as a reminder of Ouray's past.

The Horsethief Trail harkens back to Ouray's earliest days. The Ouray Trail Group took responsibility for making repairs after it washed out during the summer of 2004. It connects with several mines including the Wanakah, Johnathan, Schofield, and American Nettie mines.
