Tiger Shifted from Ranthambore National Park to Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary to Foster the Tiger Population

Noida, UP -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/26/2010 -- Sariska National Park received a tiger from the Ranthambore tiger reserve http://www.ranthamborenationalpark.com/ on Thursday, thus retaining its hope of growing its tiger population. The tiger shifted was selected after his DNA was examined using advanced scientific techniques in a bid to avoid genetic incompatibility that has been hindering Sariska's relocation program until now.

In fact, it was the first time in India that such types of genetic studies were carried out in order to identify tigers apt for translocation. Two of the 12 scat samples sent from the Ranthambore National Park for DNA examination came out to be positive. In addition to this male tiger, a female tiger will also be shifted to Sariska within the next few weeks according to government officials. This female tiger has also been identified and its DNA examined. It was found that both these animals were neither too closely related to the Sariska tigers nor are they related to each other.

"This is the first time that we conducted genetic studies to select tigers for relocation," said MR. Jairam Ramesh, the Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests. He continued, "Until now we performed normal field-level analysis. However, after our last experience, when relocated tigers turned out to be siblings, we decided it was best to approach this entire process in a scientific way."

The news of the matching of DNA results of the Ranthambore scat samples gave new life to the translocation program since Madhya Pradesh government had refused to relocate any of its own tigers.

The Sariska reserve of Rajasthan was reported to have lost the last of its own tigers somewhere between the years 2004 and 2005 mainly because of widespread illegal poaching. In a bid to revive the tiger population in Sariska, the government therefore decided to relocate tigers from other wildlife reserves of the country. Between 2008 and 2009 three tigers (a male and two females) from Ranthambore national park, were shifted to Sariska. This attempt however failed as it was later discovered that the shifted tigers were siblings and hence cannot produce any offspring.
About Sariska National Park
The Sariska Tiger Reserve is one of the most popular national parks in India. It is located in the Alwar district of Rajasthan and was once the hunting field of the erstwhile Alwar state. Sariska was declared a wildlife reserve in the year 1955 by the government of India. In the year 1978, this park was given the status of a tiger reserve making it a part of India's Project Tiger plan.
Sariska National Park to Get Two More Tigers in July

Noida, UP -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/25/2010 -- The roar of the tiger is all set to get louder at Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary with the Indian central Government finally approving relocation of two more tigers from the Ranthambore National Park ( http://www.ranthamborenationalpark.com/ ). The relocation of the big cats comprising of one male and a female is most likely to take place on 4th July 2010, though the attempts for the same will begin from 1st July itself. This process will act as a further boast for wildlife tourism in India.

Previously, between July 2008 and early 2009, two female tigers and one male tiger were relocated from Ranthambore National Park to Sariska National Park ( http://www.indiawildliferesorts.com/national-parks/sariska-national-park.html ) to restore tiger population in the park after it was found that illegal poaching has depleted their population. Though these three tigers have adapted themselves with the environment of Sariska, further relocation were put on hold since wildlife experts were of the opinion that relocating the big cats without testing their genetic hierarchy (to see if they belong to the same family) might prove disastrous.

Elaborating on the topic, the forest minister, Mr. Ram Lal Jat said "A team of experts comprising of Ms. Aparajita Dutta from the National Wildlife Conservation Trust and AJT Mr. John Singh, former professor of the Wildlife Trust of India, has been in favor of this relocation since long." The further added, "In fact, this new relocation of transient tigers to Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary has only been possible because of a letter written by Ms. Dutta indicating the rising pressure on Ranthambore National Park on account of increase in population of tigers in the park. Besides conservation of forests, the central government also wanted to popularize wildlife tours in India."

"The scats of the tigers to be relocated have been collected and sent for DNA testing. The relocation will continue alongside DNA testing as the testing takes a lot of time." said an official of the state forest department. "Another objective of this relocation would be to shift the two tigers (a female, T-37 and a male, T-47) which had strayed out of Ranthambore to Kota & Kailadevi earlier this year and have refused to come back till date. Just in case we fail to locate these on the same day, we will shift the new tigers", concluded the officials.

So far, about 10 tigers have been identified in the Ranthambore National Park for relocation, of which two will be chosen on 4th July. "We will try to shift non-related animals so as not to affect the gene pool. However, even if the relocated animals are related in any way, we will try to rectify it by relocating tigers from some other forest zone later. However, there is no question of incompatibility since the tigers from Ranthambore National Park identified to be relocated are healthy enough," he said.

3 New Tiger Cubs Born in Panna National Park

Noida, UP -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/11/2010 -- In a major development to efforts to revive the tiger population in Madhya Pradesh's Panna reserve; a relocated tigress has given birth to three cubs. This is a first of its kind. And the good news comes exactly a year after Panna reserve http://www.panna-national-park.com/ was declared having no tiger population left. The tigress which has given birth was relocated from Bandhavgarh National Park (Madhya Pradesh) to Panna in March last year.

Making an official announcement, a park official said, "We have spotted three healthy cubs with the tigress brought from Bandhavgarh National Park on May 7. With this recent development the state government's tiger rehabilitation plan in Panna has proved to be a great success".

"The cubs are believed to be around 20 days old and were spotted when their mother was taking them out of her den. The tigress is in a fine condition. The cubs have opened their eyes. This usually happens after 10 days of birth", said R. Sreenivasa Murthy, field director, Panna. "Though we had prior indications that the tigress has given birth last month, it could not be confirmed because she was hiding at a place which was difficult for us to reach. The news could be confirmed only when the tigress decided to move her cubs to a better place of the reserve", he further elaborated.

Panna reserve http://www.indiawildliferesorts.com/national-parks/panna-national-park.html , which once had more than 30 big cats, lost its entire tiger population due to illegal poaching. In an attempt to rehabilitate tigers in Panna, two tigresses, one from Bandhavgarh National Park (Madhya Pradesh) and another from Kanha Tiger Reserve (Madhya Pradesh), were relocated here on March 6 and March 9, 2009 respectively. A tiger from Pench reserve (Madhya Pradesh) was also relocated on November 14 the same year in Panna National Park.

"This relocated tiger had disappeared on November 26. However after much effort it was brought back to Panna on December 25. Thereafter, the tiger has settled comfortably in the new environs of Panna reserve which is evident from the birth of the three cubs", an official said.

"It is for the first time that a relocated tigress has given birth in India", said Mr. Murthy. In the year 2008, two tigresses and a tiger were relocated to Sariska in Rajasthan, after it lost its tiger population. These animals have not yet been able to breed. It was reported that these tigers which were brought from Ranthambhor National Park, could have been siblings.

In some more good news from Panna reserve, officials are anticipating that the second relocated tigress could also be expecting very soon. Due to this security in and around the park has been beefed up. Entry of tourists has been banned keeping in mind the safety of the tigers. Panna officials were also tightlipped over the present location of this tigress due to security reasons.

With the recent development, the government has planned to relocate six more tigers in Panna reserve in the near future.

Number of Asiatic Lion rises in Gir National Park

Noida, UP -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/05/2010 -- Officials have declared the final results of the count of total numbers of Asiatic Lions in the Gir National Park/forest http://www.indiawildliferesorts.com/national-parks/gir-national-park.html which was taken up in two phases between April 24 and April 27 2010. According to the survey, at present there are 411 lions in this forest, indicating a healthy growth rate of 13%. In the year 2005, the growth rate was just 7%. This increase in growth rate can be mainly attributed to decades of conservation work by the forest department of Gujrat.

The Saurashtra region of Gujarat is the only abode of Asiatic lions today. They once roamed across the entire southwest Asia and were great tourist attraction. However due to an increase in hunting and natural deaths in the late 1960s, only about 180 of these had survived in Gir National Park. "The lion census in three districts of Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar and some parts of Porbandar has been counted to 162 mature females, 97 mature males and 152 cubs. The number of female and young lions is quiet encouraging and the male to female ratio is a very good indicator for future prospects of these animals", said Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi.

A lot of planning was done prior to the beginning of the counting process. According to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Mr. R.V. Asari, the lion habitat in the four districts of Saurashtra had been mapped and divided into seven regions which were further divided into 28 zones and 100 sub-zones to make the counting process easy and foolproof. "It is understood that every animal would need to drink water at least once in 24 hours", said Asari explaining how the system of counting could be error free. "Even if a group lion moves away from the water hole, their movement can easily be tracked by the next beat enumerator", he further elaborated.

Restricted to only an area of 1,410 Km sq, these majestic animals were counted using advanced methods to reduce the margin of counting errors. The special features of this lion census was use of a GPS (Global Positioning System) and digital cameras to actually photograph them. "These are best for real time tracking and enumerating of the big cats", said the state principal secretary of forest and environment, Mr. S.K Nanda.

Praising the Gujarat model of wildlife management, the union environment and forest minister of India, Mr. Jairam Ramesh said "the National Tiger Conservation Authority's work to reintroduce tigers in Gujarat has been successful". Further, an unnamed official has been quoted as saying, "We have developed expertise in not only conservation of the wild cats through community protection for wildlife but also introduced wildlife crime management system".

Kaziranga National Park Showing Good Sign of an Increase of Tiger Density

Noida, UP -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/20/2010 -- Kaziranga National Park has always been a title of a noteworthy success story of preservation of one horned India Rhinoceros and other wild lives in the North East India. Kaziranga National Park has been the homeland of the Great Indian One Horned Rhinoceros, but today it is counted among best national parks that provide the safest shelter to wild lives like tiger as well. Though, the Corbett National Park enjoy the status of the best home for tigers in India, but as per the recent survey conducted by the non-governmental organisation, Aranyak, Kaziranga National Park could be more better place to see tigers. Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand and the Kanha tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh were, believed to be areas of highest tiger density, but the recent observation shows a whole new and different story.

The Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh even said a preliminary report from the second nationwide tiger census is currently underway, and things are very encouraging about Kaziranga. Perhaps, Kaziranga National Park ( http://www.kaziranga-national-park.com/ ) is showing an increase in tiger density. As per the recent studies done by Aranyak, it has been found that the Kaziranga National Park situated in Assam has 32 tigers for every 100 sq km, in comparison to the Corbett, which has 20 for the same area. This evaluation was based on the monitoring of tigers with the camera trap technology that was used by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) for conducting wide tiger census.

In the first phase, the tiger census was completed in southern India and some major parts of north India where WII scientists spotted some tigers in naxal-affected tiger reserves. However, after scientists entered naxal-affected Indravati Tiger Reserve in Chattisgarh and Palamu Tiger Reserve in Jharkhand they got tiger excreta samples. Commenting on this tragic evidence, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, said, "The evidence of excreta samples of the endangered Indian tiger found in the Naxal-dominated reserve area is the most unexpected news." The second phase of this project, which involves data collection through satellite, is also in progress. Apart from this, in the third phase the Wildlife Institute of India would use the collected data for camera trapping sessions.

Adding to this, as per one of the officials of the National Tiger Conservation Authority, the probability of tigers in Kaziranga is also expected to reach around 100 to 200. Initially, Kaziranga, which is just known for its rhinos and elephants, had about 30 tigers in 1972, and 86 in 2007. Therefore, the initial indications on tiger census are definitely encouraging.

India just has an estimated tiger population of just 1,400. The effort to save the Indian tiger certainly remains a mounting task as an international demand for tiger parts has created a profitable trade option. "The recent statistic is surely an encouraging sign and many expect that Kaziranga will emerge as the best and safest place for tigers in coming days", said one of the officials of the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

Lantana Shrub Affecting Premier Tiger Habitats of India

Lantana is a type of perennial flowering plant mainly found in tropical regions of Africa and America. Commonly referred to as shrub verbenas or lantanas, these plants are 1.6 - 6.6 ft tall and can be found in a mix of colors like red, yellow, orange, white and blue. As they mature, these flowers change their color resulting in two or three- colored blossoming.

Noida, UP -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/03/2010 -- Lantana is a type of perennial flowering plant mainly found in tropical regions of Africa and America. Commonly referred to as shrub verbenas or lantanas, these plants are 1.6 - 6.6 ft tall and can be found in a mix of colors like red, yellow, orange, white and blue. As they mature, these flowers change their color resulting in two or three- colored blossoming.

Lantana seeds are spread due to their characteristic leaves and birds feeding on its fruits. However, some species of this shrub are considered to be highly toxic weeds. Lantana leaves, poisonous for most animals is found to be responsible for depletion of natural ecosystem. In addition to this, since Lantana shrubs survive in carbon dioxide (CO2) rich atmosphere, its spread eventually results in increase of CO2 level in the atmosphere.

Imported as an ornamental shrub from South America, Lantana shrub presently covers over 25% of prime forest region, spanning all across India. There is no clear answer with the forest officials as to how Lantana spread so fast in the last decade. Famous tiger habitats like Corbet National Park ( http://www.corbett-national-park.com/ ), Nagarahole National Park and Bandipur national parks are amongst the worst that have been hit by the spread of these shrubs. However, strangely though, Lantana shrub growth has not restricted the increase in tiger population in these forest reservoirs.

In the past, travelling around the Bandipur National Park http://www.indiawildliferesorts.com/national-parks/bandipur-national-park.html , one could easily get mesmerized by the Chitals gracefully roaming in the park. However, over the years, Lantana shrub has increasingly spread all across the forest regions due to which animal sightings have become a rare occasion here. Most carnivores and other animals hide under the thick shrubbery of Lantana plants. In addition to this, the wild floras of these natural reservoirs are now mostly covered with Lantana shrubs leaving very little space for the growth of any other tree.

Officials responsible for conservation of forests in India insist that they need more funds for effective management of Lantana spread. They are of the opinion that these shrubs should be removed during monsoon before the seeds mature. At the same time, some experts emphasize that these shrubs should be cut from two centimeters below the ground level so that it does not grow back again. A team of scientists have tried this method in Corbett National Park recently and have claimed success.
