U.S. Chip Card Saturation Helps Bring Global EMV Growth Nearly to a Standstill

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/30/2017 -- For past few years, China and the US, have been increasing the shipment of EMV chip cards but are now are starting to slow down.

Between 2012 and 2015 the EMV card shipment increased from 20% to a 35%. However in the last year, according to ABI research, chip card shipments calculated in a worldwide scale were under 3 billion, with only an increase of 1% compared to 2015.

"Overstocking" by issuers in the US market followed by lots of preparation for EMV is one of the main reasons for this small growth last year as well as the October 2015 liability shift, which drafted responsibility for spurious card fraud if merchants were not able to accept EMV cards. The consequence of this saturation was that EMV US shipments declined 19% in last year, resulting in only 530 million units shipped.

Situation for contactless EMV will be a disaster in an immediate future. Most EMV cards in the US interact with the chip while inserted into the chip reader for a couple of seconds. Transactions are faster with their tap-and-go capability. ABI research stated in a press release: "Overstocking proved a major barrier in 2016, having an additional knock-on effect on contactless-issuance expectations as issuers first focus on depleting existing contact card stock,".

ABI also stated that China is contributing to worldwide slow growth because the EMV shipments lowered 3.9% in 2016. Due to the intention to boost digital banking inclusion and because their government is taking the action of taking the 500 – 1000 rupee notes out of the market.

The senior analyst in ABI Research, Phil Sealy declares: "Removal of the 500- and 1,000-rupee cash denominations directly led to a cash crisis, and as a direct result, increased demand for point-of-sale terminals and banking access, "A country once so reliant on cash was put into an instant state of shock, but the subsequent reaction will prove a positive one for all involved in the digital-payments market.".

Sealy predicts that chip card shipments in India will now flare in "valuable growth", being one of the last markets moving to EMV.

Visa Takes a Major Step Forward on IoT Payments

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/28/2017 -- Over a year ago, a Visa Ready program from Visa Inc. has expanded, allowing tokenized payments in a large range of devices with internet connection. On Thursday, Visa Inc. continued the plan, surprisingly deciding to collaborate with IBM Corp., allowing the payments to be done on any device ranging from smart watches to cars with an internet connection, effectively using IBM's Watson AI program.

Visa emphasizes the fact that the previous 6000 IBM clients from the Watson platform will now be able to pay per either calculated results from the AI, or according to their usage.

As expressed by the collaboration from Visa and IBM, using this new plan, a driver for example could take a new car off a lot and pay for it per the car's mileage using the Watson AI. Aside from being able to pay for a car, the driver can also order new replacement parts and schedule a visit for them to be installed. The two companies predict that by 2021 there will be at least 380 million cars connected.

This not only means that payments will be able to be done automatically, but also that IBM clients will now be able to have access to Visa's token engine via the cloud. This will mask the card numbers with numerous digit strings, making it safer. Both companies insist that this collaboration will provide more payments to IoT connections.

"Rather than approaching businesses on a one-by-one basis, IBM and Visa provide all customers with instant access to these capabilities so they can immediately begin to build personalized commerce experiences that take into account each consumer's behaviors and proactively make recommendations based on their unique needs," was informed to the public during a press release.

The general manager of Watson, Harriet Green, included that "This combination of IBM's industry-leading IoT technologies with Visa payment services signifies the next defining moment in commerce by allowing payments on any connected object, with new levels of simplicity and convenience for everyone."

The collaboration announcement is a portion of the IoT conference which is being held in Munich on Thursday.

Credit Cards Compromised in over 19% of Data Breaches

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/28/2017 -- Consumer credit card information has been compromised in one-fifth of the breaches that took place in 2016, a new record high number, Risk Based Security Inc. stated Wednesday.

RBS stated in its yearly Record Break QuickView, they found that 4,149 data breaches occurred, down 4% from 4,326 episodes in 2015.

"While the wide assortment of data breaches remained exceptionally levelled compared to the last year, the tremendous story flying out of 2016 is clearly the huge development inside the exposure of data." Inga Goddijn, administrator at RBS, expressed in his statement.

Email addresses have been compromised in 42.6% of the occurrences, next were the passwords with 38.1%. Social security numbers were uncovered in 16.4% of the time. 53.3% of specified breaches were due to hacking, RBS stated.

Hacking and data breaches clearly remain as a huge concern in the upcoming year and while there are some advancements in security protocols, many adjustments still need to take place.

Samsung Pay Now Has Location-Based Payments

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/01/2017 -- The well-known Samsung app that allows a smartphone to function as a credit card on-the-go through NFC is increasingly becoming a larger payment alternative to many.

New functionalities are in a process of being added, which will eliminate the need of carrying a wallet around everywhere a person goes. Along with additional services, Samsung Pay will also offer gift card compatibility and loyalty membership benefits.

New features were announced a while back in Las Vegas. One of these features is the location-based system that will be implemented to give information on nearby sellers that have Masterpass compatibility and the expansion to more markets. This functionality will be available not long after the mobile wallet service is launched in the United States with its original functions that allow Samsung Pay users to load their credit, debit and gift cards into their virtual wallet.

Next month, a feature which allows users to view deals in their nearby markets will be available. Users will instantly have access to coupons and discounts and these will be instantly redeemable. Other than that, users will also be able to pay their online purchases with this app.

Other announcements include the inclusion of Malaysia Thailand and Russia for the use of this app by the end of 2016. So far, it would count up to ten countries that are compatible with Samsung Pay since its initial release in South Korea in 2015. More expansions will be announced in 2017.

The last feature includes the adhesion of MasterCard with Samsung Pay, Android Pay, and Microsoft Wallet. These will have access to Masterpass, which allows customers to pay without having to type their credit card numbers with every purchase.

A Breach on Madison Square Garden Puts Chip Cards in Question

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/01/2017 -- Earlier this month, a representative from Madison Square Garden revealed that there has in fact been an information breach that lasted almost a full year. Apparently, the victims were a number of customers who bought concessions in five of their locations. Needless to say, this has caused the media to be all over MSQ, to the point where a group of researchers has multiple suggestions for them to improve their security system. Believe it or not, one of these suggestions is to eliminate the magnetic bar on their EMV cards.

Although the company has not revealed the amount of credit and debit cards that have been affected, it is most likely in the ball park of a few thousand. Because most of the data might have been breached from the magnetic bar, it seems fairly reasonable for them to eliminate this feature on their cards to ensure their users' security.

According to a recent investigation conducted by Madison Square Garden, they discovered "a program that looked for payment card data as that data was being routed through the system for authorization." Of course, not all the cards utilized were breached. But, as we stated before, Madison Square Garden won't say the exact number.

Because EMV chip cards are slowly but steadily replacing magnetic bar cards, fraudsters are having a harder time doing their job when it comes to card-present transactions. For that reason, they are focusing all their attention towards different channels.

It's worth to mention that completely eliminating magnetic stripes on cards would be a huge inconvenience for retailers that still don't accept cards with EMV chips. Obviously, this issue is way more common with smaller retailers that prefer to stick to the old ways due to lack of resources.

Although it is always immensely difficult to find a viable and definitive solution to counterfeiting and fraud, we have to say eliminating the magnetic stripes would be of great help.

Debit and Credit Cards Lead the Way in Non-Cash Payment Growth, New Fed Study Says

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/25/2017 -- A grand total of 144 billion USD non-cash payments were made in 2015, which is a 5% increase from 2012.

Per several sources, the amount of money transferred with non-cash methods was around 178 trillion USD. These numbers mean that credit and debit cards are becoming more and more popular. The growing popularity and usage is not only awarded to the digital payment methods, but also to the traditional cash methods, which also increased in usage by 12 billion USD in only three years' time.

On the other hand, card-not-present payments (also known as, remote payments) were responsible for 19% in 2015's total digital payments, which is less than what it was in 2012 (4% less to be exact). The usage of chip based cards increased to 230% in three years' time, initializing just three months after the EMV chip card liability shifts were established. Along with this change, fraud became less frequent, decreasing from 46% to 19%. Since the shifts took place recently, a more complete analysis will be released in 2017.

ACH-type payments grew to 23.5 billion USD in value. It's annual growth rate lies within a 4% to 4.9% yearly increase since 2012.

Another recent study shows that the check payment method has slowed down at a 4.4% rate every year for the past decade, being used by 0.5% of the population from 2012 to 2015.

Visa Reports More Than 800 Million U.S. EMV Transactions in November

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/25/2017 -- Per Visa Inc., credit card transactions surpassed 800 million in November (which is more than four times as much as 2015, which was at 175 million).

Payment volumes in 2015 compared to the previous year in Visa's EMV cards went up as high as 43.8 billion dollars, which is a 262% increase to 2014's 12.1 billion number.

Most Visa's credit and debit cards now have chips in them; 105% more than last year, which is a positive news since it reduces chances for fraud. In addition to this, 1.75 million merchants in the US accept chip based cards in their stores and the number just keeps rising but there might be errors in counting how many merchants accept these kinds of credit and debit cards, as stated by MasterCard Inc.

Visa has stated that after the change in cards types, there has been an enormous reduction in counterfeit, up to 45% than the years prior.

When It Comes to Christmas Shopping, Chip Cards Dominate the Market

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/30/2016 -- By now, everyone knows December is the month of spending a lot of money on gifts. Throughout the years, billions of dollars have been sent on holiday shopping during the seasonal days. Of course, the payment methods have also been varying throughout the years. While it's immensely difficult to analyze this entire evolution, we can say with certainty that chip cards are dominating this year's holiday shopping.

Apparently, this tendency began a day after thanksgiving, on Black Friday. Per a Boston payment provider, 55% of the payments were made with a chip card. Per this company, an approximate of 935k transactions were evaluated to come up with this result. 0.6% of these transactions were made with mobile payments (we'll leave that for a different story).

We also have information from Visa Inc, as they have said 36% of the stores in the United States are currently accepting chip cards. Furthermore, they've stated that 373 million cards with the VISA trademark are currently circulating in United States.

It's also worth to mention the fact that the usage of chip cards widely varies depending on the size of the retailer. Customers who bought their products at large retailers used chip cards as much as 75% of the time. On the other hand, only 52% is the number when we're talking about small retailers. So, it is safe to say the size of the retailer and its position on the market has a huge influence on the amount of times their customers use chip cards. Of course, this makes a lot of sense, as larger retailers are way more exposed to fraudulent transactions. With that in mind, they put a lot of effort into coming up with safer payment methods for their customers.

It's also worth to mention that E-commerce has seen a huge growth as well when compared to its last year's activity. In 2015, only 18.3% of the Black Friday purchases were done online. This year, that number rose to 24.7%.

We can assume days like Black Friday or Thanksgiving will do nothing but continue to produce more and more revenues in the following years. The question is whether the payment methods used will show a significant change one or two years from now. Unfortunately, only time will tell us. All we can do now is sit down, spend, and wait until December arrives once again.

eBay Comes Up with a New Idea for Shopaholics: Mobile Wednesday

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/30/2016 -- Several years ago, marketing executives came up with a day that made many people go completely nuts for sales, discounts, and rebates. That day, of course, is called Black Friday. However, people thought that wasn't enough, for they needed one more day to satisfy their hunger for shopping without the struggle of fighting with thousands of angry buyers over a TV. That's when Cyber Monday was born, the day where every single item online gets a huge discount and we can all enjoy the pleasures of consumerism. However, eBay reckons this is not enough, so they've come up with a new day for customers to spend their salary: Mobile Wednesday.

Basically, eBay wants to catch up with Amazon by giving customers a lot of discounts on the way to the Thanksgiving dinner. This means that the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, most items on their website would be on sale.

But, why are they doing that? Well, per eBay's senior vice president of North America, their biggest growth periods have always been on Wednesday before thanksgiving, which is why they want to keep up with that tradition. The idea is that consumers buy when they are traveling.

Big retailers like Amazon or Best Buy are releasing their sales earlier in November each year. For that reason, days like Black Friday or Cyber Monday become less important as the years' pass. It is because of that reason, eBay has decided to introduce Mobile Wednesday.

People need to relax from all the stress that the presidential elections have brought them. And what better way to do so than shopping? Now they will have more than two days to release all that tension by clicking on "Buy".

JP Morgan Chase & Co. Debuts Its Own Mobile Wallet: Chase Pay

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/30/2016 -- When it comes to mobile wallets, there are two big companies that currently own a considerable chunk of the market: Samsung and Apple. While there are multiple alternatives available, these are the one's people tend to prefer. The company JP Morgan Chase & Co. is determined to change that, and their first step in doing so was to create a mobile wallet of their own: Chase Pay.

Not that long ago, the company announced consumers can now officially download their app from Apple Store and use it in multiple Starbucks and Best Buy locations. The numbers given by the company were the following: over 7,500 Starbucks and a little under 1,400 Best Buy locations, with plans to expand to many other retailer locations in the future.

When it comes to in-store transactions, the app uses QR codes. Furthermore, it can also be used to complete in-app and online purchases. The mobile app can store Chase credit or debit cards for the user to utilize and check their balance from their phones.

JP Morgan has also announced more retailers are to accept transactions with Chase Pay in early 2017. Some of the honorable names include; Phillips, Conoco, Walmart, ShopRite, The Fresh Grocer and Shell stations.

As mentioned before, Chase Pay will be competing against major mobile wallets, including Apple's, CVS Health Corp's, Samsung's, and even Walmart's. This is the main reason why it might take a very long time for customers to get used to this new platform.

An independent payment analyst has said Chase Pay needs to incorporate more retailers as soon as possible. Fortunately, Chase Pay offers some benefits that other companies don't. For instance, the acceptance cost is reduced when compared to Apple or Samsung counterparts. However, we are yet to see if this is what merchants and consumers are looking for when they search for a mobile wallet to download.

The Internet of Things Is a Huge Opportunity for Payment Firms

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/05/2016 -- The Internet of Things, also known as IoT, is the network between household items that will come to represent an estimated $14 billion in revenue within the next four years for all those who decide to invest in it.

The representatives of mobility in the Retail Solutions Division of Intel Corp. mentioned all the financial benefits and prospects of IoT for the future. Many people are unsure of what the IoT is really about and what it's capable of doing. One of the newer examples of the Internet of Things put into action is the Samsung refrigerator. Samsung Partnered with MasterCard, so that if food items are running low, it will order new food and pay for it automatically. There is also a concept of a smart electric meter that detects how much electricity used the last month like the regular meter, but this one also pays for electric bill.

These devices function with a connection to the internet and are connected to the other household devices. By 2020, this industry will have trillions of dollars in revenue with an annual growth rate of 20%. So it is a colossal area of investment.

IoT seeks to learn about its users to fulfill their daily needs. For instance, clothes in a store equipped with an IoT tag may detect specific pieces of clothing and their popularity so that their results may be interpreted for why they succeed or fail.

Different ideas are spurring for these types of devices and manufacturers are hyped about this new potential technology of the future. App designers are also considering different designs for this sort of technology and more so considering the different potentials for each item and their displays. MasterCard and Visa are the first ones to look into this topic and that is why there is a majority of financially related topics for the IoT.

The Internet of Things is growing massively, and even though the attention for it is not so massive, profit is seen everywhere for anyone that participates in this industry.

Wells Fargo Might Be a Role Model for Some Banks

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/05/2016 -- Wells Fargo is getting ready to release a mobile wallet app for Android devices. This addition to the app store is going to be very beneficial to both its users and for the bank.

After its announcement, financial institutions will become more aware of the mobile wallet industry, according to analyst and mobile banking specialist Daniel Van Dyke.

The release of this new mobile wallet by Wells Fargo was set for this summer. This app will basically allow Wells Fargo customers with credit and/or debit cards to upload them into their phone and use their Android smartphones instead of their physical card to make purchases.

According to Van Dyke, Wells Fargo's decision of making a new mobile wallet app will be highly beneficial to the bank since it promotes ingenuity and provides a modern and sleek image to the company. This will attract many new customers as well.

In addition to its features, the app will also allow transactions between accounts without the need of using an ATM. This will be done by adding NFC to the ATMs, and it is predicted that 40% of all ATMs will be equipped with this feature by the end of 2016. On the off side, the Apple iPhone does not support this mobile wallet app due to its lack of hardware, but the mobile banking app is available.

To make it easier for its customers, Wells Fargo is also offering an integrated wallet so that credit and debit cards may be used for mobile purchases. What mean by that, is that it won't be necessary to take a picture of the card or to download any third-party software to integrate card to the app, and instead do this with the click of a button. In addition to this, customers may also view their balance before and after the purchase of an item.

There is a total of three different ways a user can purchase with the app. The first is to open the Wells Fargo app, open the wallet icon and then by entering the code. Within the new screen, there will be a "Pay Now" button. After pressing it, the device must be held above the NFC receiver. The second, is to unlock a phone and hold mobile device above the receiver and the app will launch automatically and pay for the pending item. The third and final way to pay is by entering the mobile-banking application and entering user credentials. After that, locate the wallet icon, press it and hold the device above the receiver.

Wells Fargo is among one of the first banks to announce the release of a mobile wallet app and the benefits of doing so are limitless.

Visa Is Finally Getting Rid of a Static Password

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/03/2016 -- Say goodbye to the problematic static password. Visa is announcing some drastic changes concerning the static password used with its Verified by Visa e-commerce fraud-control service. More specifically, the company plans to phase it out. Certainly, some big news that will affect their whole customer base. But Visa's intentions are a turn for the good. With the new system they are currently developing, they are sure to eliminate unwanted problems that the static password might bring to their customers, such as vulnerability towards a hacker's attack, chances of forgetting a password, and thus preventing from completing a transaction, and so on. Furthermore, in some Verified by Visa implementations, the enrollment process "can give thieves a way to register a password on a cardholder's behalf," a post issued by Visa itself says. Creating a Verified by Visa static password during the enrollment process also "can introduce friction and divert cardholders from the merchant's Web site," they add.

Keeping this in mind, the payment company is improving its own technology called Three-Domain Secure, now called 3-D Secure 2.0. This new version of the previous system is scheduled to be available by year's end.

The thing about the earlier version (3-Domain Secure) is that, while it proved effective in avoiding or detecting online fraud, it gained only limited acceptance by card issuers and merchants because of the so-called friction it generated, especially in its early integrations, when a pop-up window would force the cardholder to temporarily leave the merchant's checkout page during a purchase. Many would-be buyers simply abandoned the transaction.

Visa has also made sure that eliminating the static password will not facilitate the work to imposters. The advances made in risk modeling and predictive analysis can compensate for the lack of a static password. Many individual issuers already have moved on to risk-based and so-called dynamic authentication that includes one-time passcodes, according to Visa.

It seems to be the norm nowadays between Issuers and merchants to rely on contextual data, that is, the transactions history of the same cardholder at an e-commerce site, for example; geo-location; and device checks to verify if the electronic device has a transaction record, and if so, to test if there are any fraud risks.

In other words, the new technology will be far more effective while at the same time reducing its complexity by eliminating unnecessary sources of problems such as a static password.

Reward Cards: Are They Beneficial for Everyone?

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/27/2016 -- Every day that passes, reward cards become more and more common in the U.S. In fact, recent research has stated that 93% of all the credit card spending is done through some sort of a reward credit card. In general, people seem to enjoy this kind of payment method and will likely stick with it for a long time. And, although they can be considered helpful for card issuers and card holders, it is not always the case with merchants. Here´s why.

It´s worth to mention that people with reward credit cards spend more money on average than those who have regular credit cards. To be more specific, those who regularly use reward credit cards spend $6,300 yearly while those that use regular credit cards spend on average of only $4029. (These numbers are approximate). In general, the card issuers are indeed getting a profit from these reward credit cards. However, merchants are jeopardized by this innovative payment method, for they have to pay higher interchange fees if they want to accept these cards in their business.

As expected, merchants cannot say no to these cards, for that would drastically reduce the preference of their customers. So, merchants have no other choice but to pay these higher fees to be able to accept this method. Not only that, but if they deny the access to these cards, they will be even more surpassed by companies like Amazon or eBay, who provide customers with the online transactions they so much love and cherish.

All in all, reward cards bring a lot of controversy with them. However, they are immensely appreciated by customers and will remain in the market for a long time. All there´s left to do for merchants is find a way to make these customers fall in love again with their business. However, that´s not going to be easy.

Mobile and Online Commerce Shows Drastically Low Conversion Rates

Roswell, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/27/2016 -- Consumers have now shown their preferences and they are clearer than ever: they prefer mobile and online transactions. And it should be no surprise, as these transactions are easier, faster and way more convenient. However, merchants don´t seem to display this comfort, as their conversion rates, well, they are just low. It´s not that consumer preferences are changing, not at all. This issue is all due to checkout abandonment, which is why merchants are continuously looking for ways to make sure their customers don´t abandon their purchase midway.

The conversion rate of a business displays the percentage or amount of customers who, after having seen the page, decide to actually purchase a product or service. A recent research displayed that the average conversion rate for online and mobile commerce was only 2%. That means only 2% of the people who visit a certain page, ultimately decided to purchase a product or service. These numbers are pretty alarming.

Fortunately, three recommendations have come up to help merchants in despair who just cannot seem to elevate their conversion rate. According to Joe Walent, an analyst at Mercator Analyst Group, merchants have to make sure they provide their customers with their preferred payment method, language and currency. While all these points might seem obvious and straight-forward, they are the main reason why customers ultimately decide they don't want to purchase a product or service. Of course, these tips are not guaranteed to solve the problem completely, but they are expected to raise conversion rate to more acceptable levels.

Walent stated that foreign customers who cannot find their currency in the website in which they are trying to purchase often end up leaving. So it is recommended that, instead of losing that 40% for saving a small 1%, merchants should include their currency.

So, although mobile and online commerce generates a lot of traffic, they don´t always end up winning. However, this isn´t something that cannot be solved, it is vital for merchants to pay more attention to what their customers are demanding.
