Bent Kettle Celebrates 3rd Year in Brewing Business

Bent Kettle Brewing introduced their special brand of "non-conformist" craft brews to their local Wisconsin market.

Fort Atkinson, WI -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/24/2017 -- The biggest new trend in double IPA beers hit the market just over 3 years ago (2014) when Bent Kettle Brewing introduced their special brand of "non-conformist" craft brews to their local Wisconsin market.

Bent Kettle Founder Mark Cook started brewing beer as a hobby in 2007. He began with a kit, which was a pre-fabricated mixture of malt extract, grains, hops, yeast and instructions. Mark managed to make a decent first batch of oatmeal stout because he wanted to replicate a beer that his brother had introduced him to many years prior.

What really got Mark hooked on brewing was the look on people's faces when they tried a fresh, homemade, handcrafted beer. One of his baseball team mates once quipped "Ever think of doing it professionally?" Mark laughed–but a seed had been planted. He ended up seeking wise financial counsel to plot a course to turn a dream into reality.

Soon after that Mark became completely focused on employing any technique he could to improve the quality of each batch and reproducibility of each successive batch. "Tweaks" were made to the recipes to improve their flavors. Bigger and better equipment was purchased.

In 2014 he applied for federal and state permits and filed business documents to open Bent Kettle Brewing.

He decided on "Bent Kettle Brewing" based on a survey of friends and family. Insolence was a contender for the company name but he decided to use that name for his first commercial release and flagship brew.

According to Mark he chose his company name because Bent more accurately describes the craft beer recipes Mark creates: "non-conformist, irreverent, experimental and artisanal". So "Bent Kettle" was born.

The ultimate vision is to be able to share his craft beer flavors with the world and enjoy creating great craft beer, amazing memories and connecting with other craft beer fans along the way.

Insolence Double IPA beer is brewed with non-typical IPA malts and hard to obtain hops which have exceptional flavors. It's darker amber instead of the usual pale golden color, medium body and a big hops presence including citrus and tropical fruit flavors and aromas.

Bent Kettle at Great Taste of Midwest 2017 Craft Beer Festival

Fort Atkinson, WI -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/29/2017 -- Bent Kettle Brewing featured their new Habanero K'Paui and Raspberry K'Paui craft beer at Great Taste of the Midwest 2017 craft beer festival in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, August 13, 2017.

The Great Taste of the Midwest is the second longest-running craft beer festival in North America. Every year over 150 breweries and brewpubs serve about 1000 different beers in a beautiful lakeside setting in Madison, Wisconsin.

With a view of the state capitol, great local food vendors, and acoustic music throughout the park, festival attendees enjoyed the opportunity to explore the finest beers the Midwest has to offer, including Bent Kettle brews.

Ticket sales were limited, so patrons weren't left standing in line all day for beer. This allowed breathing room for brewers to meet and greet the craft beer lovers and enjoy getting to know each other better with feeling rushed. Bent Kettle's new Habanero K'Paui and Raspberry K'Paui craft beer flavors were a big hit among the roaming tasters.

Even though tickets for the event were $60 per person, the nonprofit event hosts, Madison Homebrewers and the Tasters Guild, assert "they are not out to make a buck". They claim they do it for the love of beer. To educate others about beer and to celebrate the good fortune of having some of the finest brewers in the world right there with them in the Midwest.

The ticket price included unlimited beer sampling in a complimentary commemorative tasting glass and an informative program book to guide craft beer lovers to the brewers and their craft beers at the event.

IPhone and Android phone apps were available on the Great Taste website (https://greattaste.org) to download for free onto mobile iOS and Android devices. The apps contained the same brewery and beer lists as the program but had additional features as well.

Plenty of tasty food treats was also available for purchase from a variety of vendors ranging from small snacks to bigger meals; for both carnivores and vegetarians.

Wandering minstrels playing non-amplified acoustic style music was enjoyed throughout the afternoon. There were a variety of musical styles that complemented the incredible variety of beer styles.

Exhibits were featured in a variety of brewing industry affiliates, regional periodicals, and beer ingredient providers. Souvenirs such as beer glasses, commemorative T-shirts and "more fun than you can shake a stick at" were also available for purchase. Many of the brewers brought items from their breweries that were offered for sale, as well.

The Great Taste of the Midwest beer festival is held annually at Olin Park in Madison on the second Saturday in August. The festival site is just off John Nolen Drive, across from the Alliant Energy Center. Tickets go on sale early every year. This year they sold out in May for the August event so be sure to get yours as soon as they go on sale for 2018.

Fort Atkinson's Bent Kettle Highly Favored Brewer in WI

Fort Atkinson, WI -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/15/2017 -- Bent Kettle is living up to their catch phrase telling people to "Get Bent" by bending the rules when it comes to new unconventional craft brews by combining unique flavors together.

Craft beer lovers and Bent Kettle Taproom patrons love how Bent Kettle bends the rules. According to the Bent Kettle philosophy of craft brewing, good craft beer should test and excite the palette. However, GREAT craft beer should go beyond the confines of that which is considered normal. It should be Irreverent, Innovative and Un-apologetic in the way it pushes the boundaries of creativity, taste and style.

Expert craft beer reviewers Beer Baron and Chris Drosner agree with Bent Kettle fans:

K'PAUI: "Candy bar in a glass! The coconut billows out of the glass, sweet and tropical and perfectly pairing with the chocolatey, slightly roasty malt for an effect that brought me back to childhood slices of German chocolate cake. From that aroma you'd expect it to be sticky-sweet, and all the sugars are not fermented away. But thanks to deft hopping and careful malt selection K'Paui is able to deliver all that coconut and chocolate character with enough balance — just the right amount of sizzling bitterness on the finish — to invite further sips. As the soft, smooth and enveloping beer warms, the malty chocolate emerges in the aroma and flavor, overtaking the still-there coconut as the foremost flavor. It's the kind of beer that figures to do well in small sips at a festival, but because you get all that candy-bar flavor without the sweetness, it's easy to go through a whole tallboy or two."

"The brewery's three mainstays, an amber ale, an India pale ale and an imperial IPA, are solid beers, made with what Cook calls a nonconformist approach. Go Fasters amber uses crystal rye malt and English hops, while Thwack IPA includes a touch of smoked malt. My favorite of the bunch has been Insolence, a warming, satisfying IPA with an interesting hop bill."

Local Craft Beer Taproom Wins Fan Support in Fort Atkinson WI

Fort Atkinson, WI -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/31/2017 -- Local craft beer taproom featuring Bent Kettle craft beer is now open every Thursday-Sunday in downtown Fort Atkinson, WI., located in the former 88 Underground/Velvet Lips Lounge.

Bent Kettle Brewing has built a strong local following for its inventive and tasty microbrews sold in cans and bottles. Now this fan base can meet up at the Bent Kettle taproom and enjoy brews together and chat with the founders and master brewer. The taproom is owned by James Jorgenson and brew master Mark Cook.

James Jorgenson, of Fort Atkinson, and Mark Cook, a former Fort Atkinson resident who currently lives in Madison, has been operating their craft brewing venture for a few years. Their craft beers are found on tap at various restaurants and bars all over Wisconsin.

In 2016 they had a vision to locate a brew house/taproom right in their home town of Fort Atkinson. They did just that in January 2017, when the duo opened Bent Kettle Taproom in the former 88 Underground and, previously, Velvet Lips Lounge downtown.

The craft beer taproom operates in a truly unique. The former 88 Underground is a historic basement space. Above it, where once a historic building stood, is Catfish Alley, complete with its signature catfish sculpture hung overhead.

The taproom's address is 10 N. Water Street West, as its entrance is on the side street. "When we learned this place was available, we contacted the owner and were able to work out a deal," said Jorgenson, who serves as taproom operations manager while Cook is brewmaster.

Taproom in Historical Location

"The two buildings that surround it were built in 1888 and 1892, and Jorgenson said that the central building that once was situated there might have been older yet," claims Jorgenson, who serves on the Historical Preservation Committee for the City of Fort Atkinson.

The historic basement of the original building remains, and is decorated with fun wall colors and fabrics, a fireplace, antique furniture, a private poker room, and a 100-year-old pool table that once was enjoyed in the century-old Fort Atkinson Club.

Even the chalkboard on which the menu is written is an antique, having come from a local grade school many years ago. "So it's probably over 100 years old too," Jorgenson said.

Casual Fun Atmosphere

"The atmosphere is really casual, like you are in someone's living room," said Sue Hartwick, who helps out stocking the bar. Mark Cook, the brewmaster, is a semi-retired optometrist of over 30 years, and he continues to practice in that field in his spare time while coming up with creative new craft brew flavors in his full time venture with Bent Kettle.

Now that the Bent Kettle taproom has opened in Fort Atkinson, the beers' reputation is spreading further. A lot of locals come in, as do beer aficionados from the Milwaukee area and farther off.

"On opening night, it was shoulder-to-shoulder," Hartwick said. "It's all about the beer. It just shows how well known the beer already is."

Because the patrons of the Bent Kettle taproom really are interested in taste and not just getting a buzz, Jorgenson said, the taproom doesn't have the same kind of trouble that many regular bars do with drunks and rebellious revelers.

"The people who come here are looking to try something new because they love the taste," he said.

Food Choices

The craft beer taproom also has a modest menu of tasty treats and full dishes that compliment the craft brews. The menu features pulled pork sandwiches, Milwaukee-made Bavarian-style soft pretzels, quesadillas, chips and guacamole, chips and salsa, and a cheese-and-meat platter to name a few of many entrees. "It all goes really great with the beer," Jorgenson said.

"We have kind of a minimal kitchen, but we get some stuff from Scott Arndt, the caterer next door, and he does a really good job," Jorgenson said, referring to the owner of the Soulful Toad.

Craft Brew Choices

As for the beverage list, the first beer they brewed and is still in production is Insolence Double IPA (India Pale Ale), which remains a favorite today. The Velvet Lips, a newer Double IPA, is named after an establishment that formerly occupied the Fort Atkinson taproom space. Jorgenson described it as a New England-style brew, saying, "Oh my goodness, is that stuff good."

More craft beers to choose from include:

Thwack Smoked IPA
Go Fasters Amber Rye
Oh Em Gee Porter
K'Paui Coconut Porter
Sha-Wing Vanilla Porter
Making Mischief (oatmeal brown with a hint of Twinkies)
Occam's Razor Belgian style dubbel
Barrel Aged K'Paui
Disregarde Bier de Garde
Pale Ale
ExperimentalALE #1.

New craft beer flavors, guest taps and "one-offs" will be offered as they become available. "We are always going to have our Bent Kettle beers here, and also a mix of guest beers," Jorgenson said. "Then we'll have a rotating mix of experimental brews that can only be tried here."

Trending Popular

Jorgenson said that even though the taproom is really tucked away, customers have been coming in steadily, alerted through word-of-mouth, publicity through the press and local media and special thanks to positive reviews of the local brews.

Many of Bent Kettle's brews have earned top marks from regional reviewers.

Robin Shepard, beer editor for Madison's Isthmus newspaper, listed Bent Kettle's K'Paui Coconut Porter as a personal favorite in his Top 10 list for the "Beer Buzz" column.

Chris Drosner, who writes the "Beer Baron" column for the Wisconsin State Journal, also did a lengthy write-up on K'Paui, which has become a favorite dessert beer.

And in March 2017 Bent Kettle's Thwack Smoked IPA was invited to participate in Hop Cat's March Madness IPA competition.
Bent Kettle's Thwack, an American IPA, will be up against some stiff competition as they compete against a rival brew that narrowly beat them in a previous year. Bent Kettle spokesman Mark Cook seems confident they will win this year.
Cook explains, "This new batch of Thwack! has been improved with double the amount of dry hopping, just in time for competition. The first round begins on Thursday, March 16th, 2017. So we'd like to ask you, our fans, for your help and support in achieving victory. How do you do that? It's easy. Simply go buy our Thwack! at HopCat during the competition. What could be easier and more fun, right?"

Whether they win or lose, Bent Kettle craft beer fans can still win. They are encouraged to bring their Hop Cat receipts indicating Thwack purchases into Bent Kettle's taproom and they will take $1 off pints and/or 50 cents off a 10 ounce pour for each pint purchased at Hop Cat. Bent Kettle fans are bent on their craft brews, including Robin Shepard writing for Beer Buzz from Isthmus Magazine. He says, "Mark Cook and Jim Jorgenson started Bent Kettle Brewing in May 2015. Two weeks ago they opened their downtown Fort Atkinson taproom at 10 S. Water St. in an 1886 building on the south bank of the Rock River.

The taproom has eight to 10 beers on tap, including brewery favorites Insolence IPA and the smoked IPA Thwack. The taproom is also an outlet for some of Cook's more limited beers, which he still makes on a 20-gallon homebrew system.

As of last weekend, among those small-batch treats were his brandy barrel-aged Belgian dubbel called Occam's Razor and a trial batch of the IIPA called Velvet Lips. The taproom is open 5-10 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sundays." http://isthmus.com/food-drink/beer/beer-buzz-bent-kettle-luckys-hop-haus/

Bent Kettle Debuts New Occam's Razor Belgian Style Dubbel Ale Microbrew Beer

On November 5th, 2016 at the Fest-Of-Ale at the Holiday Inn Express in Janesville, WI Bent Kettle offered a new microbrew beer.

Fort Atkinson, WI -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/02/2016 -- On November 5th, 2016 at the Fest-Of-Ale at the Holiday Inn Express in Janesville, WI Bent Kettle offered a new microbrew beer. New on tap: The debut of Occam's Razor Belgian Style Dubbel Ale 7% ABV.

Two other microbrew beers were available as well. The fan favorites served along with the new Occam's Razor were Insolence Double IPA 8% ABV and K'Paui Cononut Porter 7% ABV.

Bent Kettle Brewing has been planning two new beers for the fall of 2016. The first one to debut is the recently released Occam's Razor Belgian style dubbel ale. The recipe was 8 years in the making. ABV is about 7% with a dark garnet color, medium body and lots of dark fruit flavors typical of this style of microbrew beer.

Occam's Razor is aged in brandy barrels. The barrels were obtained from a Madison, WI distillery named Old Sugar. A Bent kettle Brewing company spokesman disclosed "this is a super limited project and only 4 sixth barrels of each beer exist." Production is planned to increase based on the ale's popularity with consumers.

Learn more about this special microbrew beer here: http://bentkettle.com/beers/occams-razor

The other upcoming microbrew beer soon to be released will be a Belgian double chocolate porter. They'll use a base porter recipe but ferment it with Belgian yeast and then age it on cacao nibs for a couple of weeks. This should be really, really good.

Cheers everyone!

Beer Baron Columnist Gives Thumbs-Up to K'Paui from Bent Kettle Microbrewery

Fort Atkinson, WI -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/29/2016 -- Beer Baron Columnist, Chris Drosner, has released a new in-depth review on K'Paui, microbrewery Bent Kettle's newest flavor of craft beer, and which he aptly described as "Candy bar in a glass."

Claiming the coconut-flavored K'Paui, whose name is a Hawaiian-tinged spin on the "kapow", is not only a "sweet and tropical", but pairs perfectly with the chocolatey, slightly roasty malt for an effect that brought me back to childhood slices of German chocolate cake."

Drosner, who writes the Beer Baron column for the Wisconsin State Journal, is confident that Bent Kettle's new addition, K'Paui, could provide co-owners Jim Jorgenson and Mark Cook the "breakout hit" for the Bent Kettle brewery. With the amber ale, the India pale ale, and an imperial IPA remain as the microbrewery's three primary beers, Drosner said his favorite until now "has been Insolence, a warming, satisfying IPA with an interesting hop bill."

As a labor of love of co-owners Jim Jorgenson and Mark Cook, Bent Kettle, a small operation established in April 2015, has so far sold little over 100 barrels. "Besides, we are on pace for perhaps 180 in 2016," said Cook, the 53 year-old brew master. Bent Kettle self-distributes their beer. Bent Kettle can be found at most of the bars and bottle shops in Madison, Milwaukee, and Fox Valley.

According to Cook, their immediate goal is to get the pace up to about 20 barrels a week, which would enable him to quit his day job as an optometrist. However, with there new craft beer K'Paui being their newest craft beer, the reviewer noted it could very well given Cook the break is need to so that he could finally "trade eyeglasses for beer glasses full time."

"Since its June 25th 2016 debut at the Bacon Brew and BBQ festival in Sun Prairie and subsequent introduction at various festivals during the summer, people have gone nuts over it, particularly at the Great Taste Beer Festival," said Cook, who disclosed K'Paui came about after Bent Kettle fans asked for a dark beer to go along with the other, lighter offerings.

Bent Kettle Brewing Review by Crazy Kegs Beer Blogger of Insolence, Thwack & Go Fasters Craft Beers

Crazy Kegs, the "The Straight Hops Beer Reviews & More" blog released a new post recently featuring three beers from Bent Kettle Brewing.

Fort Atkinson, WI -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/18/2016 -- Crazy Kegs, the "The Straight Hops Beer Reviews & More" blog released a new post recently featuring three beers from Bent Kettle Brewing, a Wisconsin-based craft brewery that has been brewing craft beer the way it should be brewed: Unfiltered, unpasteurized, unadulterated and unapologetic.

The featured Bent Kettle Brewing's beers are the Double IPA and flagship beer, which has an 8.2% ABV and 84 IBU. Second is their Double IPA and flagship beer, with an 8.2% ABV and 84 IBU. Third is their Go Fasters, which is considered their American Amber Ale with a 5% ABV and 40 IBU.

The Bent Kettle Brewing review can be read in full at http://crazykegs.com/bent-kettle-brewing. According to the reviewer, he "got a nice package from my girl Donna", who supposedly has 'connections' in the Wisconsin craft beer scene. In the package were three craft beers from Bent Kettle Brewing, a brewery that is making its mark in its home base of Wisconsin.

The review added that the "beers are unfiltered and unpasteurized, which I happen to dig a lot." The reviewer, claiming to be "a hop head" and was really excited about Insolence. He noted that Bent Kettle Brewing's Double IPA and flagship beer Insolence "is not your typical Double IPA." Claiming further how maltier and more caramel-y than most IPAs was, he was not crazy about really malty beers, but this is a great balance of bitterness from hops and smooth caramel maltiness.

Secondly, the craft beer blogger's review said the second one was "THWACK!", and which is their American IPA, coming in at 6.1% ABV and 51 IBU. "First of all, this is one of my favorite graphics on a can design and the name is just fun to say. Second of all, this beer beat out DFH 60 Minute and some other big beers in a contest, so it also has that going for it."

Thirdly, the article said Go Fasters, their American Amber Ale with a 5% ABV and 40 IBU, had a "nice aroma of caramely malts and rye bread as well as a bit of fruit scent."

"If you're lucky enough to live in or near the land of cheese, brats and beer, you should make sure you try some Bent Kettle craft beers, said the Crazy Kegs reviewer.
