How to Find the Right Skin Moisturizer? Beauty Headlines Asks a Top Dermatologist

Confused by the endless array of moisturizers? What is essential and for what skin type?

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/18/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century. Check BeautyHeadlines.com daily for the latest trends, tips, and honest advice without all the noise.

Feel overwhelmed when you want to buy skin moisturizer for your dry skin? That's no surprise, as there are dozens to choose from at the drugstore and hundreds more at high-end cosmetics and department stores — creams, lotions, ointments, some with sunscreen, others with an exfoliant. Choices range from the basic $1.50 jar of petroleum jelly to a $500 five-ounce tub of designer skin moisturizer. And all the options in between can make your head spin.

While choosing the right skin moisturizer may seem confusing, it's actually very simple if you follow a few guidelines, says dermatologist Monica Halem, MD, of ColumbiaDoctors Eastside in New York City. Dr. Halem's first rule of thumb? Don't spend too much money.

How a Skin Moisturizer Works

Cleansers and moisturizers are the most important skin products, particularly for softening dry skin. A skin moisturizer works by sealing moisture into the outer layer of the skin and by pulling moisture from the inner layers of skin to the outer layer.

Key ingredients that seal in moisture are petrolatum, mineral oil, lanolin, and dimethicone.

Glycerin, propylene glycol, proteins, urea, and vitamins help attract water into the outer layer of the skin.

Some skin moisturizers also contain an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), which exfoliates dead skin, says Francesca Fusco, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and a spokeswoman for the Skin Cancer Foundation. AHAs are a good choice if you have very dry skin.

Finding the Skin Moisturizer For You

It may take some trial and error, Halem says, so be patient. Follow these guidelines as you shop and, if you're not getting the results you want, try a new one the next time:

Note the first five ingredients. Look for common active ingredients, such as lanolin, glycerin, or petrolatum, Dr. Fusco says. Glycerin is less likely than lanolin to cause an allergic reaction, she says. She also recommends picking a moisturizer that's made by a reputable company.

Go for added sunscreen. Protecting your skin from harmful sun damage is one of the best things you can do to keep your skin looking young, so buy a moisturizer with a sun protection factor of at least 30. You'll have to do some searching, but more companies are offering face and body moisturizers with sunscreen, Halem says.

Make it skin-type appropriate. The skin on your face is thinner and more sensitive, so it's a good idea to use a different moisturizer on your face than you do on your body, Fusco says and recommends buying one that's labeled "non-comedogenic" because it won't clog your pores. Of course, choose one that's right for your skin type. If you know you have sensitive skin, it's always a good idea to look for a moisturizer labeled hypoallergenic. If you have oily skin, go with a light, oil-free moisturizer. If you have dry skin, get something richer. And if you have combination skin, go with a lighter moisturizer for your whole face and dot drier areas with a heavier cream, Fusco says. Keep in mind that you may need a lighter lotion in the summer, and a cream or ointment in the winter.

Consider using a moisturizer with retinol before bed. Retinol is vitamin A for your skin, Halem says. It works by increasing the speed at which your skin cells turn over. You can find it over the counter or by prescription, but use it carefully as it may cause a skin irritation, red skin, or dry skin.

Relief by Prescription

If your skin is very dry, consider a prescription moisturizer. Prescription moisturizers contain the AHA lactic acid, which softens the top layer of your skin and can do a better job if over-the-counter moisturizers aren't working for you, Fusco says. AHAs such as lactic acid and glycolic acid can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Tell your doctor if you experience burning, irritation, red skin, itching, or a rash.

Another prescription option is a barrier cream, which contains humectants that hold on to moisture longer, Fusco says. Barrier creams penetrate a little deeper than standard moisturizers, she adds.

When to Moisturize

Once you find the right product, moisturize every day and you'll go a long way toward preventing dry skin and even camouflaging wrinkles. While a skin moisturizer can't get rid of wrinkles — because wrinkles begin much deeper in the skin due to collagen loss — it can plump up the skin and minimize their appearance, Halem says.

Whichever moisturizer you choose, it will work better if you apply it to damp skin. Think about a sponge that's dried out, Fusco says. If you put moisturizer on it, it won't go anywhere. But if you soak the sponge in water and coat it with moisturizer, the sponge will absorb it. Your skin works the same way, happily lapping it up.

Dietitians Report the Top Seven Causes of Weight Gain

Are you guilty of any of these top seven sins of eating? If so, dietitians warn you may see steady prolonged weight gain.

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/18/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century.
According to dietitians these are the seven biggest causes of belly fat.

1. Drinking Soda Regularly

Can't last a day without gulping down a can or two of soda? If this is you, then you're certainly not being kind to your body. According to researchers, consuming one or two cans of soda daily causes your waistline to increase at least five times faster than those who rarely drink soda over the course of a week. The concept behind this is that the high amount of sugar used in sodas trigger your craving for food, so you end up eating more than you should during mealtimes. Diet sodas aren't any better than regular varieties, sure they don't have as many calories, but since these contain artificial sweeteners, which can increase your appetite as much as sugar does. So if you have that serious craving for a satisfying drink, opt for healthy smoothies, fresh fruit juices, or a glass of water with lemon zest and mint leaves. You're doing your body and overall health a favor by choosing a more nutritious drink that's also low in sugar content. Since soda only causes you to add pounds without quenching your thirst, why bother drinking it, right?

2. Using a Larger Plate Each Time You Eat

Whether it's a buffet dinner or just a regular meal at home, pay attention to the size of plate you use at mealtime. In a survey conducted among obese individuals, it was discovered that these people prefer larger plates over smaller or medium-sized ones. With a large plate size, they have more space for their food. So, how does this habit cause belly fat? Simple. When you have a larger space to pile up your food, you tend to consume more than your body needs, and that leads to more fat stored in your body. To avoid this nasty chain reaction, make it a point to use smaller plates and resist the urge to eat or go back for seconds when you've already had enough.

3. Dining Late at Night

While it's true that your body naturally burns some flab as you sleep, it might not be able to efficiently do so when you go to bed on a full stomach. Aside from causing belly fat, eating late and reclining on a full stomach increases your risk of developing acid reflux and indigestion, since gravity is no longer able to pull everything in your tummy straight down. To prevent these conditions, consider eating smaller meals at night and don't lie down for at least three hours after dinner. If possible, just snack on fruits in case you feel a bit hungry at night instead of raiding the fridge for sweet desserts to satisfy your craving.

4. Eating When Sad, Angry or Upset

Do you find yourself eating absent-mindedly when your emotions are at their peak? The next time you catch yourself doing this, try to snap out of it before you end up eating a double cheeseburger and fries. Emotional eating does nothing to make you feel better. If there's anything you can get from this habit of eating whenever you're upset or stressed out, it's just hideous belly fat. The best way to combat this response to stress is by drinking a glass of water, talking to a friend, or taking a relaxing walk. Choose an activity that doesn't involve eating, so you can stop yourself from loading up on extra calories when you're feeling emotional.

5. Consuming Low-Fat Foods More Often

Some people assume that high-fat foods and drinks lead to more fat storage in your belly. The truth is, monounsaturated fats are not bad for you. If anything, foods such as avocados, olive oil and seeds work well in eliminating belly fat. Be wary of too many low-fat foods, since manufacturers often add sugar to these items. And you know what that means – the more sugar you have in the body, the greater your chances of storing more body fat.

6. Depriving Yourself of Sleep

Ideally, adults should get about seven to nine hours of sleep each night. When you fail to get enough sleep, your level of cortisol (stress hormone) increases and causes you to crave sugary foods. With that in mind, it's harder to get rid of belly fat when you keep the habit of not getting enough sleep regularly. To maintain normal levels of the stress hormone cortisol, try your best to attain the recommended hours of sleep every night. This way you can balance your cortisol levels while boosting production of leptin, a type of hormone that causes you to control your appetite.

7. Not Getting Enough Protein in Your Regular Diet

Have you been depriving your body of protein-rich foods? Generally, healthy adults should consume at least 20 to 25 grams of protein in each meal, although this depends on your activity level and body size. Men in particular, should get an additional 10 grams of protein with every meal to ensure excellent health. By increasing your protein intake, you can balance out your blood sugar while reducing insulin levels to promote a faster metabolic rate. What's more, protein helps control hormones that increase your appetite, so you can slim down naturally. To power up your daily meals, consider eating high-protein foods such as ricotta cheese, shellfish, turkey, skinless chicken, salmon, and eggs. These are your best options because of their low fat and high protein content – a great combination for slimming down and shaping up!

So are you ready to say hello to a flatter tummy and a gorgeous body? Just be sure to avoid these seven bad eating habits, and you can be on your way to improving your body size and overall health.

What You Need to Know About Collagen: Beauty Headlines Asks a Dermatologist

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/18/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century. Check BeautyHeadlines.com daily for the latest trends, tips, and honest advice without all the noise.

Let's start with what collagen is and why you definitely want it. Collagen is what makes your complexion firm, plump, and youthful. Sure, there's other important stuff in the mix, but this protein makes up 75 to 80 percent of your dermis. "Collagen fibers are like a bunch of sturdy, fat Roman columns placed close together, holding up the top layer of skin," says Dennis Gross, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. "When you're young and healthy, the pillars are strong, straight, and plentiful, so skin looks smooth. And when you pinch your cheek, skin feels spongy and full." When skin is healthy, it repairs and makes new collagen. If everything is working as it should, then cellular collagen-making machines called fibroblasts churn out new collagen and your body produces enzymes that, like a microscopic wrecking crew, break down old or damaged collagen and carry it away, says Ronald Moy, M.D., a derm in Beverly Hills, California. The result: a collagen give-and-take that keeps skin looking smooth and young.

But things like ultraviolet rays, smoking, pollution, stress, and other factors wreak havoc by producing free radicals in your skin. "Free radicals are like little arrows that poke holes in and break down collagen fibers, causing skin to thin," Gross explains. Even more bad news: Excessive sun exposure reduces fibroblasts' collagen factories, causing a flimsier, weaker collagen layer, and overstimulates the wrecking crew that then clears out healthy collagen. (It's not just the sun you should be scared of; pollution might be your skin's biggest enemy.)

No matter how much sunscreen you wear, eventually these collagen-making cells lose steam. "When you're young, they make a lot of collagen, but they get worn down starting around age 35," Gross says. The enzymes that break down collagen, however, become overactive because of excess sun exposure and damage from years earlier. Then come wrinkles and sagging. Make an expression, and you usually create creases. When collagen is strong, your skin bounces right back. But if collagen is weak, repeated movements cause permanent creases. Skin doesn't have enough collagen to fill in the groove, so you see a line even when you're not squinting or furrowing, and it no longer has the same density to resist gravity, Gross says.

1. Start caring about your collagen now.

When you're relatively young and fibroblasts are at their peak—before you see the effects of sun or other damage—is the best time to protect collagen against future damage and begin shoring up skin's collagen layer. "Once skin starts to thin and sag, it's much harder to correct," Moy says. But it's never too late to adopt healthy-skin habits. One way to do it, which you're probably already doing: exercise and eat well. "Anything that increases oxygenation and blood supply to collagen will make skin healthier," he says. Antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies, meanwhile, help protect collagen from the inside.

2. Use antioxidants and sunscreen as your collagen's bodyguards.

It takes only two short exposures to UVA rays (two hours of strong sun over two days) to turn up the body's production of the collagen-degrading enzyme MMP1. Levels increase with additional exposures, according to University of Michigan researchers. On the other hand, fair-skinned people who ramped up their sunscreen use, applying it at least three to four times a week, showed no detectable signs of aging after four and a half years and had smoother skin (which in part indicates healthier collagen) compared with those who maintained usual, less-frequent sunscreen application, according to a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine of more than 900 Australians.

Using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is a must. You'll also need antioxidants to neutralize damaging free radicals and extinguish inflammation. A few antioxidants pull double duty and stimulate collagen while protecting it. "Vitamin C is one key that fits into specific receptors on fibroblast cells, helping to turn them on," Gross says. The best serums combine vitamin C with vitamin E and ferulic acid, two antioxidants that boost vitamin C's power eight-fold, according to research. Copper peptides likewise can benefit skin as an antioxidant and collagen stimulator, says Ranella Hirsch, M.D., a derm in Boston.

3. Build collagen as you would a workout routine.

HIIT, yoga, Pilates: They all work in different ways to help you reach one goal—to get fit. The same goes for collagen building. "You want to expose fibroblasts to multiple ingredients, each of which targets different receptors but all of which tell cells to produce more collagen," Gross says. Along with sunscreen and vitamin C, this is what else helps get your collagen in shape:

Proven and Potent: Vitamin A Derivatives

Prescription retinoic acid (like Retin-A) and OTC retinol may be old news at this point, but that's a good thing: It means they've withstood the test of time because they work, says Hirsch. (New trends, like venom beauty products, don't have as much cred.) Both retinoic acid and retinol "turn on" genes and cells involved in collagen production. They also help organize new and existing collagen, Hirsch says. A recent study found that a four-week treatment with .1 percent retinol increased levels of procollagen types 1 and 3 (the body's precursor to collagen) and reduced wrinkles after 12 weeks. Retinol and Retin-A can be irritating, so limit yourself to a pea-size drop for your entire face, starting only every other night, she says.

Gentle Collagen Stimulators: Peptides and Growth Factors

Both have science to back up their collagen-building, antiwrinkle claims. Peptides, for example, act as messengers, telling cells to ramp up collagen production. Growth factors stimulate fibroblasts and stem cells to encourage new cells and collagen. The advantage over vitamin A: Both are less irritating, but results may take longer or be more subtle, which is why many experts recommend doubling up—retinoids at night or every other night, peptides and growth factors in the morning or on the night you skipped vitamin A. (Or try supplying vitamins from the inside).

4. Try the newest collagen skin-care products.

If collagen is the holy grail of healthy skin, ingredients that trigger its production are what unlock its power—and the search is on for the next best thing. These three newcomers show promise.

DNA repair enzymes, which were initially developed to thwart skin cancer, also have the benefit of reducing collagen loss. When you fix skin's damaged DNA, it becomes thicker and tighter, Moy says.

Signaling proteins from snails seem odd, yes, but lab research shows that the proteins, which are a type of growth factor, tell dormant stem cells to reproduce and grow into collagen-making fibroblasts.

Collagen-building supplements, meanwhile, sound too good to be true, but new research on a specific, more easily absorbed collagen peptide is noteworthy.

5. What about a professional procedure?

Pro procedures take collagen building to the next level. Topical treatments are effective and easy, but it can take months to see results. The alternative: in-office treatments. They're pricier, of course—one can cost $1,000 or more, and you may need three to five—but they work (almost) at the speed of, well, light. Gross utilizes V-beam and Gentlemax lasers simultaneously during his 3-D collagen treatment to target multiple fibroblast receptors, with little recovery time.

Fractionated lasers, such as Fraxel, are another go-to, thanks to good results balanced with minimal downtime. They cause microscopic, controlled "injuries" in the collagen layer, which the body repairs by making, you guessed it, new collagen. Professional microneedling works in a similar, albeit lower-tech way; tiny puncture wounds on the surface of the skin jump-start the healing and collagen-building process, and also help collagen-building ingredients penetrate deeper, Moy says.

Another option in the dermatologists' toolkit: injectable hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane. Research shows that along with plumping wrinkles from below, they have an effect on skin's own collagen-making cells. "Skin cells are smart. When you inject fillers, they think, 'OK, this is how skin is structured now, let's produce more collagen to keep up,'" Hirsch says. "It's subtle, but over time, patients often find they need to come in less frequently—every five months instead of every three, for example." The right pro treatment depends on your skin and other factors; talk to your derm about what's best.

Beauty Headlines Investigates the Dangers of Photoshop

Should Photoshop be banned from media use because it instigates unhealthy eating habits?

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/17/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century.
For more than twenty years, the media has used Photoshop for photograph alteration and enhancement. Though the use of Photoshop is not always abused, the media occasionally uses Photoshop in negative ways, such as altering people unrealistically. The Photoshopped images in the media often impact the people who view the images in a negative, and occasionally dangerous, way.
Should Photoshop be banned from media use because it instigates unhealthy eating habits?
Exposure to Photoshopped images in the media makes people more likely to develop unhealthy eating habits. Often, these habits turn into eating disorders, which are "more than two times more prevalent in the United States than Alzheimer's disease." Something to think about. Some people who see Photoshopped models in fashion magazines wish to look more like their extremely thin and unrealistic figures. Since the fashion industry seems to endorse extreme thinness, it can lead to the development of eating practices which "may manifest themselves as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating or other partial- or full-spectrum eating disorders."

10 Facts About Body Image

1. "Body image" is the way that someone perceives their body and assumes that others perceive them. This image is often affected by family, friends, social pressure and the media.

2. People who are unhappy with their bodies and don't seek healthy nutrition information may develop eating disorders. "Eating disorders" are unhealthy relationships with food that may include fasting, constant dieting, or binging and purging.

3. Body image is closely linked to self-esteem. Low self-esteem in adolescents can lead to eating disorders, early sexual activity, substance use and suicidal thoughts. You can post encouraging notes in your school bathrooms to brighten your classmates' day. Sign up for Mirror Messages.

4. Approximately 91% of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape. Unfortunately, only 5% of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media.

5. 58% of college-aged girls feel pressured to be a certain weight.

6. Studies show that the more reality television a young girl watches, the more likely she is to find appearance important.

7. More than 1/3 of the people who admit to "normal dieting," will merge into pathological dieting. Roughly 1/4 of those will suffer from a partial or full-on eating disorder.

8. In a survey, more than 40% of women and about 20% of men agreed they would consider cosmetic surgery in the future. The statistics remain relatively constant across gender, age, marital status, and race.

9. Students, especially women, who consume more mainstream media, place a greater importance on sexiness and overall appearance than those who do not consume as much.

10. 95% of people with eating disorders are between the ages of 12 and 25.

11. Only 10% of people suffering from an eating disorder will seek professional help.

Why let Photoshop change people when people can change Photoshop?

Additionally, children who see Photoshopped images of models tend to become less confident in themselves and want to change their bodies at a young age. A study done by Dove found that "42 percent of first- to third-grade girls want to be thinner, while 81 percent of 10-year-olds are afraid of getting fat" after exposure to images of Photoshopped models. Often, young girls resort to extreme changes in their diets to become happier with their bodies, which poses serious health risks for a child in their developmental stage. However, industries other than fashion use Photoshop that causes unhealthy eating habits in people. The food industry also uses Photoshop in their advertisements. When people see an advertisement or image of a Photoshopped burger or other unhealthy food, they are enticed to eat these foods in large amounts. This binge eating can lead to large and unhealthy weight gain. Research done by the American Heart Association found that "people who eat fast food twice a week and spend at least 2 hours a day watching television have triple the risk of obesity" when compared to people who limit watching TV to an hour per day. Not every ad seen on TV includes Photoshopped images; however, when it comes to fast food, every food item shown is unrealistic. The advertisements people see for fattening fast food increase their intake of fast food, which causes health problems. After seeing such intriguing advertisements, who would not want to eat a big, juicy burger? When used to alter people or food, Photoshopped images in all industries have a large, often unhealthy impact on the people that view them.

Although significant evidence exists to prove that people who see Photoshopped models are more likely to develop eating disorders, many say that Photoshop is not used to create unrealistic definitions of beauty. In fact, Photoshop may not mainly be used to create a false body image in all cases. However, Ken Harris, who edits photos of models using Photoshop, admits, "all that is there to alter your mind, to alter your conception of what physical beauty is ... and what the means of attaining it are." He continues to say, "in that the central point of retouching is to enforce an unrealizable standard of beauty, I suspect of myself some sort of covert obscure misogyny, because I'm really screwing with people's sense of identity and self-worth by doing this." Since a professional who uses Photoshop admits that it is used to create unrealistic standards of beauty, clearly a serious problem exists.

While it's doubtful we will eliminate the misuse of Photoshop, it's important to have conversations with our children about body image and reinforce realistic images and healthy ideals.

7 Weight Loss Mistakes Healthy Women Make. Beauty Headlines Asks a Nutritionist

We all make little mistakes, but could some of those mistakes add up to big problems on the scale?

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/16/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century.
Weight Loss Mistakes Even Healthy Women Make

You snack on fruit, count calories, and get some form of exercise most days. So when you step on that scale and the needle stays put, you wonder what the heck you're doing wrong. Even with clean eating and good fitness habits, you may be making a few small mistakes that can lead to a plateau and derail your results. Here's how to upgrade your already-healthy habits to finally reach your get-slim goal.

1. If you count calories... Determine the right intake for you.

Only 11% of Americans correctly estimate their ideal daily calorie requirements, according to one survey. The rest of us tend to overestimate, says Bonnie Taub-Dix, RD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Let's say you assume that consuming 2,000 calories per day will allow you to reach your target weight, but it really takes 1,800: Those extra 200 are enough to keep an additional 20 pounds on your frame.

Do it better: If 1,800 calories is your max, split it into three 500-calorie meals and one 300-calorie snack.

2. If you're consistently active... Rev your routine.

When you spend a few hours running errands, it feels like you've worked off some serious weight. But despite hauling around those grocery bags, you burned only about 400 calories—that's about 1/10 of a pound.

Do it better: Short bursts of intense activity burn more calories—and up to 36% more fat, according to a study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology. Strolling around the mall or a park for an hour works off about 150 calories; pick up the pace 1 minute out of every 5 to burn over one-third more calories (try a similar method if you bike). Swimmers can switch from freestyle or breaststroke to a more challenging crawl every few laps, or just go a little faster. Give these quick calorie-burning interval workouts a try.

3. If you choose nutritious foods... Keep portions in check.

What you put on your plate is important, but healthy eating is also about being mindful of how much you consume. For example, your husband has pancakes with butter and syrup for breakfast, your son grabs a doughnut, and you opt for a cup of oatmeal with a handful of walnuts, a sliced banana, and a large glass of organic blueberry juice. You may win on nutrients, but when it comes to calories, you're dead last: That healthy-sounding meal adds up to almost 700 calories, more than a third of your allotment for the day.

Do it better: The best way to know if you're eating too much is to write it down. "Even if you note it on a napkin and then throw it away, that's okay. Just the act of writing makes you more aware," says Taub-Dix. Portion control cues help too: A baseball-size serving for chopped veggies and fruits; a golf ball for nuts and shredded cheese; a fist for rice and pasta; and a deck of cards for lean meats.

4. If you order the "healthiest" menu item... Do your dining out research in advance.

Choose the turkey sandwich over pizza and you think you're set, but again, looks can be deceiving. A turkey sandwich that comes on focaccia with cheese and mayo can deliver 970 calories. Two slices of pepperoni pan pizza total 520 calories. Put your sandwich in a spinach wrap instead of regular bread? It's the same difference, says Tara Gidus, RD, a former spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "My clients think they get more nutrients and save on calories with 'healthy bread,' but often that's not the case."

Do it better: Look up nutrition facts before you eat there. See if your favorite eatery has nutrition facts online or in the store—you may be surprised at what you see. Here are 13 helpful tips for dining out on a diet.

5. If you choose "diet" treats... Eat the real thing, but downsize your portion.

When you want something sweet, all those fat-free, sugar-free options seem like a smart choice for weight loss. But researchers at Cornell University found that overweight people who choose low-fat versions of snack foods rather than the regular kinds consume, on average, twice as many calories. "The terms 'fat-free' or 'sugar-free' can create a green light effect, triggering people to eat more," says dietitian Cynthia Sass, RD. But many fat-free foods have about the same number of calories (or more) as their full-fat counterparts.

Do it better: Go for reasonable amounts of the real thing. If you love ice cream, have a small scoop of premium. "You won't stick to a diet that doesn't include your favorites," says David Grotto, RD, author of 101 Foods That Could Change Your Life. Bottom line: Life's too short for forbidden foods.

6. If you're a crunch queen... Don't forget your cardio

One of the biggest mistakes women make when trying to figure out how to lose belly fat: too many crunches, too little cardio. No matter how toned your abs are, your belly won't look flat until you get rid of the layer of fat on top of them, says Jessica Smith, a certified personal trainer and star of fitness DVDs. For that, you need to rev your calorie burn. Interval training, in which you alternate high-intensity bursts of activity with easier bouts, has been shown to zap more belly fat than steady-paced moderate workouts.

Do it better: Try these quick calorie-burning intervals. Each week, aim for three interval sessions and two or three moderate, steady-paced workouts of 30 to 60 minutes each—along with ab exercises—for best results.

7. If you eat snacks to quell cravings... Be more mindful of your intake

You may think you're vigilant about watching what you eat, but research shows that stolen bites and tastes can rack up a few hundred uncounted calories, which can put on pounds fast. Eating while distracted can cause mindless eating, too. When women who normally watched their portions had lunch in different situations, they ate 15% more (72 additional calories) while listening to a detective story, compared with when they ate alone and free of any distractions, found a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Do it better: Avoid eating when your mind's elsewhere (while on the computer, for example), and eliminate unnecessary distractions (turn off the TV; set aside the book).

What You Can Do to Stop Accelerated Aging? Beauty Headlines Asks a Dermatologist

Why is it that 10 years of wrinkles, spots and baggy skin seemingly show up in just a matter of months?

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/16/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century.
"What is going on?"

That was the thought running through Samantha Morgan's mind when she stared at herself in the mirror one morning about a year ago.

Samantha always considered herself relatively healthy. She practices yoga regularly, drinks plenty of water, and consumes a balanced diet. Although she never truly bought into the luxury skin care craze, she did try a number of popular skin care products such as Olay Regenerist and Estee's Lauder Anti-Wrinkle Cream.

But at age 43, she was staring at signs of aging that she had never noticed before: visibly deeper wrinkles, puffy saggy eyes and skin that seemed to look dull and lifeless. What really surprised her was that these signs came quickly. It seemed as if they appeared overnight.

Was it just her imagination or did she just not notice the changes till then? Why didn't she see these signs before? Just what was going on?

"Look, I understand that getting older is inevitable but I'm not willing to go under the knife to look like a plastic doll. Why is it that I show 10 years of wrinkles, spots and baggy skin only in the last few weeks?" Samantha wondered.

Samantha didn't know it at the time, but an independent research paper commissioned by the University of California at Berkley proved 2 aspects of aging (true for both men and women):

Two Irrefutable Facts On Accelerated Aging

1) The aging process accelerates with time. For example, the average person loses collagen & elastin 1% every year at the age of 18, but by the time you reach 40, the loss of collagen & elastin doubles. And it gets worse as you enter your 50s and 60s.

2) Your body and skin age every day but you may not notice these signs of aging until they build up to a point when they suddenly become visible. It's called the "tipping point"

"So what will happen to my skin the next year or two; am I going to put on another 10 years' worth of wrinkles and spots? Is there anything I can do about it? That's the question that I want answered." – says Samantha

"The Earlier the Better"

Dressed immaculately in a custom Tom Ford suit, Patrice Mercier exudes the confident maturity of a man in his late 50s but looks like a man who could pass for 40. Patrice is the former head of Research & Development at Christian Dior Beauty and now leads the research team at Paris based cosmetics giant Sephora. He's seen a lot in his 30 years in the beauty industry and says Samantha is asking all the right questions.

"That is the number one question we get at Sephora. 10 years ago, customers would come in asking for miracle products that would solve all of their problems, but by then it's almost too late. Now our customers don't want to wait until it's too late. The earlier you understand how to treat your skin the better and there is no set age to start incorporating an effective daily anti-aging routine. We have customers that start early as 19 and as late as 65." Says Patrice

Does that mean you can grab the cheapest product on store shelves and slather your face with it? Absolutely not! In fact Patrice is adamant that the wrong products can actually make your skin age faster!

"The new and most effective approach is to protect the cells responsible for regeneration, to repair the damaged structures and to maintain the right levels of activity for the self-repairing enzymes." adds Patrice

The Hidden Accelerators of Aging

Patrice is confident that the days of cheap skin creams found in drug store shelves are over. Made with synthetic petroleum based products and ingredients like formaldehydes, parabens and phthalates, they can actually damage your skin permanently.

Why use such chemicals as ingredients? Because they are cheap, readily available and make their products last longer on store shelves. Make no mistake, it's about profits. As long as their customers buy the products and don't ask any questions, why spend time and money on better but more expensive ingredients?

But according to Patrice, that trend is now changing

"We find the that most popular and effective skin care products are brands that use natural ingredients to offer a step by step methodology to heal, regenerate and repair the skin to produce natural and long term skin health. It's not about covering up, it's about healing."

So with that in mind look for facial care products that are packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Ones that are backed by science and paraben and petroleum free.

Also, cleanse your face before bed, moisturize daily and used a broad-band SPF. The sooner you start, the better.

Are You Making These Diet Mistakes? Beauty Headlines Asks a Registered Dietician

Eating less, but not losing weight? Working out but not seeing any results on the scale?

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/13/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century.
If you're giving it your all but the number on the scale still isn't budging, you may be sabotaging yourself in spite of your best intentions.

You eat fake foods

We admit that prepackaged weight-loss products like shakes and bars are convenient, but they may not be helping you to lose weight in the long run.

"You never feel satisfied after you eat something like that, because it's just a bunch of processed stuff," says Manuel Villacorta, a registered dietician and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

There are lots of healthier, more filling options with the same or fewer calories, like a cheese stick or a serving of plain nonfat Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries.

You stay up late

Sure, you need to log time at the gym, but to lose weight, you also need to log time in your bed.

Skimping on sleep, especially sleeping less than five or six hours a night, can slow your metabolism and cause hormonal changes that hurt your weight-loss efforts.

Being tired may also make you eat more. One recent study found that people who are sleep-deprived consume a whopping 500 extra calories a day.

You exercise too much

Yes, you read that right. Exercise is important, but Villacorta maintains that being too focused on it can backfire.

"People think that if they exercise they will magically lose weight, and then they get frustrated," he cautions.

In fact, about 80% of dieting time and energy should be focused on nutrition and 20% on exercise, he says. "If I have a client who's exercising six times a week, sometimes I'll cut that in half and have them spend the extra hours shopping and planning meals."

You always choose the salad

Contrary to popular belief, heading for the salad bar may not be your best option.

Salads may not contain enough carbohydrates to help control hunger hormones, according to Villacorta. He suggests a healthy soup and sandwich instead, or tossing a serving of brown rice, lentils, or garbanzo beans into your greens. And beware of high-calorie salad bar additions like blue cheese and candied walnuts.

Add enough of those and "you may as well just have a burger," he says.

You're a high-calorie health nut

Just because a food is healthy doesn't mean you can eat a mountain of it.

Switching from white bread to whole wheat bread, eating nuts instead of chips, using olive oil instead of butter —these are all healthy changes. But they aren't low-calorie substitutions, so portion control is still key.

You eat too early

Popular wisdom says not to eat in the evenings, but that may not make sense unless you turn in extra early.

"People eat at 6:00 and stay up until 11:00 or midnight, so their bodies are naturally asking for fuel again," Villacorta says. "I tell people to aim to eat 70% of their calories before dinner and 30% at dinner, but it doesn't matter how late dinner is." Healthy eating in the evening can prevent a late-night binge on ice cream or cookies.

You're a loner

Remember the buddy system from your kindergarten field trips? It works for dieting, too. Studies show that support from friends and family increases the likelihood that women will lose weight.

If you can't get what you need from your nearest and dearest, other forms of support—including advice from a weight-loss counselor or encouragement from online buddies—can also do the trick.

You never snack

To keep your metabolism at its peak, you need to eat every three to four hours.

"People think they need to eat less frequently, but really they need to eat more often, in smaller amounts," Villacorta advises. "There's no real reason you need to think in terms of breakfast, lunch, and dinner."

You don't have a diary

One large-scale study found that keeping a daily food journal doubled the amount of weight participants lost.

Researchers speculate that simply writing down what you put in your mouth makes you more accountable and cuts your daily calories.

Create your own food log or use one of the many available for free online.

You don't like water

Substituting water for sugary sodas and even for juices can make a major dent in your daily calorie count. Drinking water may also help you manage your appetite.

In one study, people who drank two glasses of water before eating a meal consumed up to 90 fewer calories.

You skip breakfast

There's lots of evidence that people who eat breakfast tend to have healthier weights, so start the day right by making time for a morning meal.

Experts say whole-grain cereal is one of the best breakfast choices for dieters.

It's quick and easy, too—so there goes the excuse about not having time before work.

You hate to cook

Restaurant meals are frequently more caloric than home-cooked ones, so dust off your apron and hunt down some healthy recipes.

When you do eat out, consider splitting a meal with your date or asking the water to serve you half of your meal and have the other half boxed up to go.

It is claimed to lead to all sorts of benefits, some of which are supported by science.

This includes weight loss, lower blood sugar levels and improved symptoms of diabetes.

Here are 8 health benefits of apple cider vinegar, that are supported by scientific research.
Balance your digestive system

Apple cider vinegar may just be the solution to help your digestive issues. To reduce gas, dilute a tablespoon of enzyme-rich apple cider vinegar with a cup of water or tea, and drink before a meal. This will also combat constipation since the vinegar stimulates digestive juices that help your body break down food. You can also take a dose as soon as you feel heartburn symptoms coming on for a quick fix. Some theories suggest that heartburn occurs because of low stomach acid levels; so vinegar brings that level up. If you hate the taste of this mixture, try adding a dollop of honey.

Weight loss

For daily weight management, add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to 16 ounces of water. This concoction can be sipped throughout the day. Data shows some limited, yet significant, weight-loss benefits from sustained daily intake of acetic acid (which is a main ingredient in ACV).

In a 2012 study published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, it was found that subjects who consumed acetic acid for 12 weeks experienced significant declines in body weight, abdominal fat, waist circumference, and triglycerides. Triglycerides contribute to the bad cholesterol that we want to avoid

Remove dandruff

Dandruff is more than just a nuisance – it's embarrassing! Salon sprays are costly, but with apple cider vinegar, your dandruff destroyer will cost only pennies per spray. Just mix equal parts (about 1/4 cup each) apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray onto your hair after shampoo, let sit for 15 minutes and rinse. Use twice per week, and you should be flake free in no time. One theory suggests that the acidity in the vinegar makes it harder for the fungus that contributes to dandruff to grow on your scalp.

Sooth a sore throat

If you suffer from chronic sore throats, but don't want to overdose on cough syrup, turn to apple cider vinegar. Mix one teaspoon apple cider vinegar, one teaspoon cayenne pepper and three teaspoons clover honey in a glass of warm water for an easy elixir. All three ingredients will work together to help you heal: Apple cider vinegar and honey have antibacterial properties, and the capsaicin in hot peppers helps alleviate pain. If that sore throat is due to allergies, apple cider vinegar packs an extra punch, since it also breaks up mucous and sinus congestion.

Clear up your skin

Apple cider vinegar can do wonders for your skin. For an all-natural astringent, apply a washcloth soaked in diluted apple cider vinegar to your face. Afterward, the protective acidic layer will make your skin feel smoother, absorb excess oil and reduce fine lines. This works by restoring the proper pH levels to your skin, and beta-carotene helps to counter future skin damage. Plus, a dab of diluted apple cider vinegar left overnight on age spots, pimples or acne scars will help reduce their appearance.

Great for your lymphatic system

This miracle vinegar helps to break up mucus throughout the body and cleanse the lymph nodes. Believe it or not, research suggests that ACV can help with allergies because of its ability to reduce mucus and sinus congestion. When reducing the effects of allergies, it can also help stave off sinus infections and their related symptoms, such as sore throats and headaches.

Detoxification

As part of balancing the body's pH, ACV creates an overall detoxification of the body. Research shows that it can help stimulate cardiovascular circulation and help detoxify the liver.

Stamina and Energy

Improved stamina and energy are harder to measure subjectively, but raw, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar has long been considered a general health tonic and more energy and greater stamina are commonly reported when drinking it.

This may be a combination of all the other health benefits of ACV already listed. Or it could be due to the powerful alkalizing effect it has on your body when you drink apple cider vinegar daily.

Apple Cider Vinegar Energy Drink

1 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar
1 TBSP of Honey
8 ounces of water (or try pineapple juice if you need it sweeter)

You can also squeeze in a fresh ½ lemon or lime

Beauty Headlines Interviews Doctors on Simple Ways to Lose Weight Before Lunch

7 simple ways to get a jumpstart on your day and lose some pounds in the process.

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/12/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century. Check BeautyHeadlines.com daily for the latest trends, tips, and honest advice without all the noise.

All of us appreciate our sleep, especially if we have children. But if I told you that getting up early actually helped you shed some pounds, would you get up earlier? You probably would. Although there's nothing quite like sleeping in on day when we can, there's something about getting up early and accomplishing tasks first thing. Down below we've listed seven moves you should add to your morning routine that will help you lose that extra weight you've been trying to lose.

1. Get enough sleep
I know I said that getting up early was important in reaching your goals however, you don't want to be depriving yourself of sleep either. Did you know that lack of sleep actually messes with certain hormones, which can have a negative impact on your metabolism? When we are deprived of sleep, the metabolic system will be out of whack. Lack of sleep causes us to crave more carbohydrates. In fact, studies have shown that sleep deprivation plays a part in obesity in teens and young adults.

2. Get some sun
The first thing you should do when you get up is open up your blinds or curtains and let the sun shine through. Exposing yourself to light early in the morning as opposed to later in the day synchronizes your internal body clock, which means that you're more likely to have a natural and steady sleep schedule. By having a steady sleep schedule, it helps your metabolism run more efficiently which in turn, will help in weight loss.

3. Eat protein
A lot of people skip breakfast and blame on "not being a breakfast person", but you should know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Something that I'm sure all of you have heard before. Eating breakfast actually gives you a little jolt to start your day and can help you resist cravings throughout the day. For some quick ideas I recommend eggs whites with some whole wheat toast. Or, for something to grab quick if you're running late, greek yogurt and some fruit.

4. Drink water
I recommend drinking ice cold water the second you get out of bed in the morning. It helps get rid of bloating and rev's up your metabolism. Some of us like to drink juice in the morning with our breakfast such as OJ. I recommend flavoring your water with a lemon or lime instead. There's roughly 100 calories in an 8 oz glass of orange juice. A study has shown that drinking a large, cool glass of water after you wake up has been shown to fire up your metabolism by a whopping 24% for 90 minutes.

5. Morning workout
If you're one of those people who get in their workout first thing in the morning, keep it up; it boosts your metabolism. Whether it's going to the gym, going for a run, or doing some type of workout at home, keep doing it. If you're not a morning workout person, it definitely has its perks. Two being that it helps you feel more accomplished and positive. I have found that having a friend work out with you can help you stay focused and motivated when you feel yourself falling off track. Work out buddies make it more fun anyway.

6. Pack some snacks
If you have the time, pack yourself a healthy lunch. If you're running low on time, plan to pack several healthy snacks that will last you throughout the day. This will help fight to urge to go out and grab fast food, which is always packed with tons and tons of calories.

Below I've listed some healthy options:

Almonds
Granola
String cheese
Protein bar
Dried fruit
Whole wheat crackers and peanut butter
Instant oatmeal
Mini pitas with hummus
Veggies with ranch

7. Walk
Walk to work. Walk to the store. Walk the dog. Walk the coffee shop. Walk! This one is kind of obvious. We tend to always park as close to our destination as possible so we don't have to walk as far. Try parking a few blocks away from work or parking in the back of your parking lot to burn some extra calories. As a bonus walking in nature can boost your mood.

Beauty Headlines Investigates World's Healthiest Diet

The DASH diet has been named the healthiest and easiest diet by US News & World Reports.

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/11/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century.
The DASH diet has been called the healthiest and easiest diet in the world. We decided to take a closer look and educate our readers to what the DASH diet entails.

DASH emphasizes portion size, eating a variety of foods and getting the right amount of nutrients. Discover how DASH can improve your health and lower your blood pressure.

DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The DASH diet is a lifelong approach to healthy eating that's designed to help treat or prevent high blood pressure (hypertension). The DASH diet encourages you to reduce the sodium in your diet and eat a variety of foods rich in nutrients that help lower blood pressure, such as potassium, calcium and magnesium.

By following the DASH diet, you may be able to reduce your blood pressure by a few points in just two weeks. Over time, your systolic blood pressure could drop by eight to 14 points, which can make a significant difference in your health risks.

Because the DASH diet is a healthy way of eating, it offers health benefits besides just lowering blood pressure. The DASH diet is also in line with dietary recommendations to prevent osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

DASH diet: Sodium levels

The DASH diet emphasizes vegetables, fruits and low-fat dairy foods — and moderate amounts of whole grains, fish, poultry and nuts.

In addition to the standard DASH diet, there is also a lower sodium version of the diet. You can choose the version of the diet that meets your health needs:

Standard DASH diet. You can consume up to 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium a day.

Lower sodium DASH diet. You can consume up to 1,500 mg of sodium a day.

Both versions of the DASH diet aim to reduce the amount of sodium in your diet compared with what you might get in a typical American diet, which can amount to a whopping 3,400 mg of sodium a day or more.

The standard DASH diet meets the recommendation from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans to keep daily sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg a day.

The American Heart Association recommends 1,500 mg a day of sodium as an upper limit for all adults. If you aren't sure what sodium level is right for you, talk to your doctor.

DASH diet: What to eat

Both versions of the DASH diet include lots of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products. The DASH diet also includes some fish, poultry and legumes, and encourages a small amount of nuts and seeds a few times a week.

You can eat red meat, sweets and fats in small amounts. The DASH diet is low in saturated fat, cholesterol and total fat.

Here's a look at the recommended servings from each food group for the 2,000-calorie-a-day DASH diet.

Grains: 6 to 8 servings a day

Grains include bread, cereal, rice and pasta. Examples of one serving of grains include 1 slice whole-wheat bread, 1-ounce dry cereal, or 1/2 cup cooked cereal, rice or pasta.

Focus on whole grains because they have more fiber and nutrients than do refined grains. For instance, use brown rice instead of white rice, whole-wheat pasta instead of regular pasta and whole-grain bread instead of white bread. Look for products labeled "100 percent whole grain" or "100 percent whole wheat."

Grains are naturally low in fat. Keep them this way by avoiding butter, cream and cheese sauces.

Vegetables: 4 to 5 servings a day

Tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, greens and other vegetables are full of fiber, vitamins, and such minerals as potassium and magnesium. Examples of one serving include 1 cup raw leafy green vegetables or 1/2 cup cut-up raw or cooked vegetables.

Don't think of vegetables only as side dishes — a hearty blend of vegetables served over brown rice or whole-wheat noodles can serve as the main dish for a meal.

Fresh and frozen vegetables are both good choices. When buying frozen and canned vegetables, choose those labeled as low sodium or without added salt.

To increase the number of servings you fit in daily, be creative. In a stir-fry, for instance, cut the amount of meat in half and double up on the vegetables.

Fruits: 4 to 5 servings a day

Many fruits need little preparation to become a healthy part of a meal or snack. Like vegetables, they're packed with fiber, potassium and magnesium and are typically low in fat — coconuts are an exception. Examples of one serving include one medium fruit, 1/2 cup fresh, frozen or canned fruit, or 4 ounces of juice.

Have a piece of fruit with meals and one as a snack, then round out your day with a dessert of fresh fruits topped with a dollop of low-fat yogurt.

Leave on edible peels whenever possible. The peels of apples, pears and most fruits with pits add interesting texture to recipes and contain healthy nutrients and fiber.

Remember that citrus fruits and juices, such as grapefruit, can interact with certain medications, so check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if they're OK for you.

If you choose canned fruit or juice, make sure no sugar is added.

Dairy: 2 to 3 servings a day

Milk, yogurt, cheese and other dairy products are major sources of calcium, vitamin D and protein. But the key is to make sure that you choose dairy products that are low fat or fat-free because otherwise they can be a major source of fat — and most of it is saturated. Examples of one serving include 1 cup skim or 1 percent milk, 1 cup low fat yogurt, or 1 1/2 ounces part-skim cheese.

Low-fat or fat-free frozen yogurt can help you boost the amount of dairy products you eat while offering a sweet treat. Add fruit for a healthy twist.

If you have trouble digesting dairy products, choose lactose-free products or consider taking an over-the-counter product that contains the enzyme lactase, which can reduce or prevent the symptoms of lactose intolerance.

Go easy on regular and even fat-free cheeses because they are typically high in sodium.

Lean meat, poultry and fish: 6 ounces or fewer a day

Meat can be a rich source of protein, B vitamins, iron and zinc. Choose lean varieties and aim for no more than 6 ounces a day. Cutting back on your meat portion will allow room for more vegetables.

Trim away skin and fat from poultry and meat and then bake, broil, grill or roast instead of frying in fat.

Eat heart-healthy fish, such as salmon, herring and tuna. These types of fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help lower your total cholesterol.

Nuts, seeds and legumes: 4 to 5 servings a week

Almonds, sunflower seeds, kidney beans, peas, lentils and other foods in this family are good sources of magnesium, potassium and protein. They're also full of fiber and phytochemicals, which are plant compounds that may protect against some cancers and cardiovascular disease.

Serving sizes are small and are intended to be consumed only a few times a week because these foods are high in calories. Examples of one serving include 1/3 cup nuts, 2 tablespoons seeds, or 1/2 cup cooked beans or peas.

Nuts sometimes get a bad rap because of their fat content, but they contain healthy types of fat — monounsaturated fat and omega-3 fatty acids. They're high in calories, however, so eat them in moderation. Try adding them to stir-fries, salads or cereals.

Soybean-based products, such as tofu and tempeh, can be a good alternative to meat because they contain all of the amino acids your body needs to make a complete protein, just like meat.

Fats and oils: 2 to 3 servings a day

Fat helps your body absorb essential vitamins and helps your body's immune system. But too much fat increases your risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. The DASH diet strives for a healthy balance by limiting total fat to less than 30 percent of daily calories from fat, with a focus on the healthier monounsaturated fats.

Examples of one serving include 1 teaspoon soft margarine, 1 tablespoon mayonnaise or 2 tablespoons salad dressing.

Saturated fat and trans fat are the main dietary culprits in increasing your risk of coronary artery disease. DASH helps keep your daily saturated fat to less than 6 percent of your total calories by limiting meat, butter, cheese, whole milk, cream and eggs in your diet, along with foods made from lard, solid shortenings, and palm and coconut oils.

Avoid trans fat, commonly found in such processed foods as crackers, baked goods and fried items.

Read food labels on margarine and salad dressing so that you can choose those that are lowest in saturated fat and free of trans fat.

Sweets: 5 servings or fewer a week

You don't have to banish sweets entirely while following the DASH diet — just go easy on them. Examples of one serving include 1 tablespoon sugar, jelly or jam, 1/2 cup sorbet, or 1 cup lemonade.

When you eat sweets, choose those that are fat-free or low-fat, such as sorbets, fruit ices, jelly beans, hard candy, graham crackers or low-fat cookies.

Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal) and sucralose (Splenda) may help satisfy your sweet tooth while sparing the sugar. But remember that you still must use them sensibly. It's OK to swap a diet cola for a regular cola, but not in place of a more nutritious beverage such as low-fat milk or even plain water.

Cut back on added sugar, which has no nutritional value but can pack on calories.

DASH diet: Alcohol and caffeine

Drinking too much alcohol can increase blood pressure. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that men limit alcohol to no more than two drinks a day and women to one or less.

The DASH diet doesn't address caffeine consumption. The influence of caffeine on blood pressure remains unclear. But caffeine can cause your blood pressure to rise at least temporarily. If you already have high blood pressure or if you think caffeine is affecting your blood pressure, talk to your doctor about your caffeine consumption.

7 Small Changes Can Add Up to Huge Weight Loss - Beauty Headlines on Dieting

Losing weight doesn't have to be a huge radical change. Several small changes can add up to big weight loss.

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/10/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century. Check BeautyHeadlines.com daily for the latest trends, tips, and honest advice without all the noise.

Just one or two little changes to your daily routine can burn 20-40 pounds of belly fat in less than 1 year. The key is making a commitment and realizing that it takes time. Try any of these 7 great tips out for 3 months and just see the difference for yourself. If you are serious, try several, and stick to them for a full year no matter what! Not only will you melt away excess fat, but you will feel great!

1. Keep A Food Log (-25 pounds)

Sitting in front of your computer snacking out of a bag of chips could result in you eating the whole bag! Write down how much you eat and you're far more likely to practice portion control and lose weight fast.

Research has shown, people who keep a food journal naturally make lasting changes to their diet and lose an average of 15 pounds in as little as 6 months and 25 pounds in a year. Most importantly the weight loss lasts. One year later, more than 85% of participants were still within 3 pounds of their target weight.

Food Journaling is easy and also lends insight to your eating habits. Do you skip meals? Do you eat the same over the weekend as you during the week? Do you binge when feeling stressed?

2. More Sleep = More Weight Loss (-10 pounds)

Try going to bed one hour earlier. You will see results within one week. Researchers from the University of Florida found as little as three nights of sleep deprivation in one week, can lead to immediate weight gain. Scientists asked one group of participants to sleep one extra hour while they had another group sleep one less hour. After the 10 days, the sleep-deprived group gained an average of 3 pounds, compared with a well-rested control group that lost 1 pound.

3. Make Your Own Lunch! (-25 pounds)

You'll save thousands of calories and hundreds of dollars over the course of a year. Think about this! The average chicken wrap from a chain restaurant has an average of 600 calories and more than 1/3 of it comes from added fat, as well as 1,380 mg of sodium (more than half the recommended daily amount).

Make your own lunch with cuts of deli chicken or turkey breast on whole wheat bread with a light dressing with romaine lettuce for less than 250 calories. You'll cut more than 350 calories and about 520 mg of sodium, which leaves room for a side salad or an apple and could still add up to a 25-pound weight loss after one year.

Remember! The #1 reason restaurant food is so high in salt and fat is that it's not very fresh nor is it made with high quality (expensive) ingredients!

4. Put a Pedometer App on your Cell Phone! (-12 pounds)

It'll track your steps and remind you how many (or how few) steps you take throughout the day. Research has shown that people that use a pedometer take 2,500 steps more per day. That adds up to an extra 100 calories a day burned. Over one year, that is 12 pounds of weight loss!

5. No Love for the Elevator! (-6 pounds)

Have a choice between taking the elevator or the stairs? Including 2-3 minutes of stair climbing per day—covering about three to five floors, can burn the calories to eliminate the average American's annual weight gain of 1-2 pounds a year. It's also good for more than just your waistline. People who climbed more than 10 flights of stairs a day had 19% lower mortality rates than those who climbed fewer than 3 flights a day, according to an Oxford study.

Start with just a couple of flights a day. If you're already a dedicated climber, aim to add three more flights to your daily routine.

6. Make Exercise Social (-20-25 pounds)

Did you know you are 10 times less likely to skip a workout if you exercise with a friend? Doing exercise with friends makes you more accountable. No one wants to let down a friend and leave them hanging at 6:30 AM.

The neat thing researchers found out recently is your workouts don't always have to be done face to face. A study found women who had some form of support, either through a counselor or an online group, lost more than 20 pounds over a 12 month period over those who tried exercising alone. This was especially true for couples who exercise together. Couples lost an average of 25 pounds when they made a commitment just to support each other in their weight loss goals.

7. Lighten up your Coffee & Tea! (-20 pounds)

Coffee drinks at Starbucks average more than 250 calories! Some are over 400 calories! That's not a drink, that's a dessert!

A daily habit of 1 sugary coffee drink per day can easily translate to a 20-pound weight gain in less than 1 year! A regular cup of coffee or tea with just a dash of milk and even a little sugar has hundreds of fewer calories than the fancy drinks and are cheaper too!

To supercharge your weight loss, make your own coffee or tea at home and take it to-go and save calories while saving a ton of money!

Beauty Headlines Interviews Experts, "What Super Foods to Try in 2017?"

These Super Foods Will Be All the Rage in 2017!

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/09/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century.
Now that we know what health and wellness trends are in and out for 2016, we wanted to see what's next. To find out, we quizzed Livestrong.com expert Jess Barron to reveal the top 2017 predictions in health and wellness with the Google trends data to back it up.

By now, we're all familiar with the term superfood. From kale to bone broth, it's safe to say we've all tried at least one of them in 2016. Below are a few you can expect to see in your 2017 diet.

Avocado Oil

In the year 2016, it was all about coconut oil, and it's been steadily growing in popularity. But while it is well-known for its many health benefits, those promises haven't been without some skepticism. As those doubts continue to surface, we're seeing avocado oil spike. According to Google trends, we expect to see a surge in interest come January 2017. "In October, Livestrong had the opportunity to interview Jillian Michaels at the BOLD Conference in Hollywood, and she told us, 'Avocado oil is the new coconut oil,'" said Barron. "Avocado oil has many health benefits including lowering blood pressure and helping relieve arthritis and psoriasis."

Black Garlic

The health benefits of garlic are well-established, and regardless of the medicinal qualities, it really packs a punch in our favorite recipes. According to Livestrong writer Katie Farmand, black garlic has a less pungent flavor and nearly twice the antioxidants of fresh garlic. "It's long been valued in Asia, but only made its debut in Western markets in the past several years," she penned. "The powerful antioxidants in black garlic protect your cells from disease and can even help you stay younger longer."

The gentle, sweet flavor makes it a versatile superfood too. "Add it to any recipe in which you'd use fresh garlic, from pasta dishes to soups and stews," she wrote. "The best part? No garlic breath." In September 2016, Frito-Lay launched Black Garlic Doritos in Japan and searches for black garlic spiked incredibly high, although it was already building in popularity. So just what is black garlic anyway? According to Geekologie, it's made by slowly heating regular garlic cloves over several weeks until they caramelize." Sounds delicious.

Dragon Fruit

Its bright pink exterior is hard to ignore when you see it in the market or grocery store aisle, but it turns out dragon fruit is more than just a pretty face. It's an anti-aging fruit with high levels of vitamin C and carotene. Barron said it has been steadily growing in interest on Google Trends over the past several years and looks set to increase in 2017, thanks in part to the delicious dragon fruit smoothie bowls we've been seeing all over social media (just like this one which had 178,000 views on Facebook).

Maca Powder

If you've dabbled with maca powder before, or even if you're already familiar, expect to see it everywhere in 2017. Made from a Peruvian root vegetable, it's believed to promote energy, stamina, fertility, and sex drive. "According to the New York University Langone Medical Center, most of the research on maca has been conducted on animals, but there have been a couple of human trials that yielded interesting findings," noted Barron. "One study showed increased sex drive (not function) in males. Another study showed that it can increase sperm count however this study did not have a control group, thus making the results meaningless in the scientific community. As a rich source of B vitamins; vitamins C, D and E; iron; copper; and potassium, maca powder unarguably provides a simple way to increase your micronutrient intake."

To introduce it to your diet, simply add the powder to baked goods, smoothies, yogurt, tea, and cereals. Barron said maca is growing in popularity, and due to its fertility and sex drive tie-in, she predicts it will spike in February 2017.

Nutritional Yeast

Also known as "nooch," this longevity food is actually deactivated yeast. Unlike its cousin, it won't rise during baking, but Barron said it's a rich source of vitamin B12, a nutrient that boosts your energy, protects your brain, and promotes healthy skin, hair, and nails. "It's also a complete protein (a protein source like meat, eggs, and milk that contains all nine essential amino acids), so it's a great addition to vegetarian and vegan diets," she noted. Nutritional yeast is growing in popularity, and Barron says you can expect to see it spike up in January 2017. "Its cheesy, nutty flavor makes it a great healthy topping for salads or salty snacks like popcorn," she said.

Ashwagandha

If you're always on the hunt for the next big vitamin to charge your inner batteries, Livestrong scribe Yael Grauer says we'll all be adding ashwagandha to our Amazon Prime list in 2017.

"Ashwagandha is an adaptogen, which means it helps you adapt to stressors," said Grauer. "Although there is limited research on this claim, it is also thought to help improve sleep quality." The only time you should avoid ashwagandha is if you're pregnant or are taking immunosuppressants, sedatives, or thyroid hormone medication.

Beauty Headlines Interview's Personal Trainer for the Quickest Way to Lose Belly Fat

What's the fastest, easiest workout that lets you see the best results?

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/06/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century.
We interviewed a local top personal trainer as to the quickest way to lose the belly during the new year.

It's pretty obvious why people's health generally declines upon entering college or starting a full-time office job.

Office workers usually sit in front of a computer all day and to make matters worse, many deal with the stress of their new career by eating fast food for lunch or endless unhealthy snacks.

All of this comes with its consequences and gave rise to the popular term "Freshman 15". Of course you don't need to be a freshman to see a spike in weight gain.

The Freshman 15 refers to the approximately 15 pounds of weight gain that students tend to gain during their first year of college or university and it applies to anyone who is going through a lifestyle change. Whether it's your first office job, getting married, having kids, or something even more stressful like illness or separation.

This kind of rapid weight gain tends to go straight to your belly and belly fat becomes difficult to lose.

If you've experienced this (I certainly did when I started my first job), then I'm going to show you how to quickly lose the weight you've gained and if you're about to make a big life change, I'll show you how you can prevent your weight gain from even happening.

We're going to do this with some HIIT workouts, which are perfect for helping you lose belly fat fast and for good.

What is HIIT?

HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is a technique in which you give 100% effort through short, intense bursts of exercise followed by short (sometimes active) recovery periods.

This type of workout keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time than low-intensity exercise.

For example, take a look at sprinters. They're usually very muscular and very lean compared to marathoners.

This is due to the type of training they perform – bursts of high intensity as opposed to long low-intensity cardio.

"A high-intensity workout increases the body's need for oxygen during the effort and creates an oxygen shortage, causing your body to ask for more oxygen during recovery, this afterburn effect is referred to as Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) and is the reason why intense exercise will help burn more fat and calories than regular aerobic and steady-state workouts."

Eric Salvador

NASM, NSCA, head instructor at The Fitting Room in New York City

Benefits of HIIT

Here are a few other benefits of HIIT if I haven't fully convinced you yet.

1. Increases your metabolism

HIIT will boost your metabolic rate for up to 48 hours after your routine which means you'll still be burning fat when you're sitting on the couch hours after the gym

2. It's quick and convenient

I understand that many students don't feel as though they have time to workout, but HIIT workouts can be done anywhere and most are 20-30 minutes or less

3. No equipment necessary

When most people look for a workout to lose belly fat, they usually require a gym or several pieces of gym equipment.

Good thing HIIT workouts generally only use your body weight as the focus is to boost your heart rate and keep it there.

This results in optimal muscle building, as well as fat loss and increased calorie burn.

Now, with that being said HIIT is very intense and physically (and mentally) challenging but the benefits and changes you will see from it will definitely make it worth it!

Let's take a look at 3 HIIT workouts to lose belly fat that you can start experimenting with today!

1. The "Anywhere, Anytime HIIT Workout"

Repeat this whole circuit 3 times with a minute rest in between circuits. Don't take any rest between each exercise.

40 Squat Jumps
20 Push Ups (can do "girl pushups" if needed)
30 Jumping Jacks
10 Tricep Dips
10 Burpees
30 Seconds Front Plank
2. The Sprint Session (simple yet very effective)

Total time: ~12 minutes

30 seconds sprint then 40 seconds brisk walk

Repeat 10 times

This can be done either outside or on a treadmill and make sure you are performing at 95-100% intensity during your sprints.

3. The Squat Jump and Burpee Session

The total time for this circuit is 10 minutes. Repeat this whole circuit twice with a minute rest in between.

Squat Jump & Burpee HIIT Program

Minute 1: Squat jumps (repeat 20 seconds on then 10 seconds rest)
Minute 2: Burpees (repeat 20 seconds on then 10 seconds rest)
Minute 3: Squat jumps (repeat 20 seconds on then 10 seconds rest)
Minute 4: Burpees (repeat 20 seconds on then 10 seconds rest)
Minute 5-6: Rest
Minute 7: Squat jumps (repeat 20 seconds on then 10 seconds rest)
Minute 8: Burpees (repeat 20 seconds on then 10 seconds rest)
Minute 9: Squat jumps (repeat 20 seconds on then 10 seconds rest)
Minute 10: Burpees (repeat 20 seconds on then 10 seconds rest)

Psychologist Suggests a Simple 10 Minute Routine for a Better Quality of Life

This simple routine will help you crystallize where you want to go, and how you will get there.

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/05/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century.
We asked a psychologist for a short simple exercise anyone could do that would improve one's day to day life.

"Your subconscious mind works continuously, while you are awake, and while you sleep."--Napoleon Hill

Your subconscious never rests and is always on duty because it controls your heartbeat, blood circulation, and digestion. It controls all the vital processes and functions of your body and knows the answers to all your problems.

What happens on your subconscious level influences what happens on your conscious level. In other words, what goes on internally, even unconsciously, eventually becomes your reality. As Hill further states, "The subconscious mind will translate into its physical equivalent, by the most direct and practical method available."

Consequently, your goal is to direct your subconscious mind to create the outcomes you seek. Additionally, you want to tap into your subconscious mind to unlock connections and solutions to your problems and projects.

Here's a simple routine to get started:

Ten minutes before going to sleep:

"Never go to sleep without a request to your subconscious." --Thomas Edison

It's common practice for many of the world's most successful people to intentionally direct the workings of their subconscious mind while they're sleeping.

How?

Take a few moments before you go to bed to meditate on and write down the things you're trying to accomplish.

Ask yourself loads of questions related to that thing. In Edison's words, make some "requests." Write those questions and thoughts down on paper. The more specific the questions, the more clear will be your answers.

While you're sleeping, your subconscious mind will get to work on those things.

Ten minutes after waking up:

Research confirms the brain, specifically the prefrontal cortex, is most active and readily creative immediately following sleep. Your subconscious mind has been loosely mind-wandering while you slept, making contextual and temporal connections. Creativity, after all, is making connections between different parts of the brain.

In a recent interview with Josh Waitzkin, former chess prodigy and tai chi world champion, explains his morning routine to tap into the subconscious breakthroughs and connections experienced while he was sleeping.

Unlike 80 percent of people between the ages of 18-44 who check their smartphones within 15 minutes of waking up, Waitzkin goes to a quiet place, does some meditation and grabs his journal.

In his journal, he thought-dumps for several minutes. Thus, rather than focusing on input like most people who check their notifications, Waitzkin's focus is on output. This is how he taps into his higher realms of clarity, learning, and creativity--what he calls, "crystallized intelligence."

If you're not an experienced journal writer, the idea of "thought-dumping" may be hard to implement. In my experience, it's good to loosely direct your thought-dumping toward your goals.

Consider the "requests" you made of your subconscious just before going to bed. You asked yourself loads of questions. You thought about and wrote down the things you're trying to accomplish.

Now, first thing in the morning, when your creative brain is most attuned, after its subconscious workout while you slept, start writing down whatever comes to mind about those things.

I often get ideas for articles I'm going to write while doing these thought-dumps. I get ideas about how I can be a better husband and father to my three foster children. I get clarity about the goals I believe I should be pursuing. I get insights about people I need to connect with, or how I can improve my current relationships.

Conclusion:

"A man cannot directly choose his circumstances, but he can choose his thoughts, and so indirectly, yet surely, shape his circumstances."--James Allen

Mental creation always precedes physical creation. Before a building is physically constructed, there's a blueprint.

Your thoughts are the blueprint of the life you are building one day at a time. When you learn to channel your thinking--both consciously and subconsciously--you create the conditions that make the achievement of your goals inevitable.

You are the designer of your destiny. This simple routine will help you crystallize where you want to go, and how you will get there.

Beauty Headlines Asks Medical Experts, "What Popular Health Trends Should Be Left in 2016"

Health trends come and go. Some are helpful, while others are downright dangerous. What are ones better left forgotten in 2017?

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/03/2017 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century.
With the New Year here, we asked medical experts about some of the popular trends they recommend abandoning in 2017.

Trend: Cooking with coconut oil

"People seem to be eating it and drinking it with everything — adding it to coffee, cooking their vegetables with it — and it's giving them large quantities of fat. I wish this trend would go away," said Dr. Andrew Freeman, a cardiologist and director of Cardiovascular Prevention and Wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado.

The latest guidelines from the American College of Cardiology recommend against tropical oils, he said. Freeman is the chair of the American College of Cardiology's nutrition and lifestyle working group.

Coconut oil, a tropical oil, is not recommended because it's likely to be artery clogging.

"Years ago, it was fed to lab animals to induce atherosclerosis," said Freeman.

"It's not a recommended oil by any of the guidelines that I know of. In general, it can contribute to cardiovascular disease risk because of its very high saturated fat content. The standard American diet most people already eat is already high-fat and full of a lot of processed meats and cheese, and now everyone's adding coconut oil and we're going in the wrong direction," he said.

People who already have cardiovascular risk factors should definitely avoid it, he advised.

"Coconut oil is not a 'superfood.' Coconut meat by itself is probably not a bad thing to eat, but it's when you start extracting the oil out of a plant — that's when you get into trouble. I'm not entirely sure why it's caught on the way it has," Freeman said.

Trend: Smartphone apps to diagnose melanoma

Don't use an app to diagnose skin cancer, said Dr. Abigail Waldman, a dermatologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and an instructor at Harvard Medical School.

She's had lots of patients ask about the apps, which require users to upload a photo of the mole or skin area in question, then run the image through an algorithm that is supposed to tell you whether or not it's potentially cancerous.

"Essentially, a large number of melanomas are not going to be picked up by these apps," Waldman told us.

They're only about 60 percent sensitive, research suggests, so a lot of cases would slip through the cracks. On the other hand, she noted, when the apps do identify one, they're about 99 percent accurate.

"If you're worried about a spot enough to use an app to diagnose it, you should get it checked by a doctor," she said.

A dermatologist is best, but if that's not an option, make an appointment with your primary care physician.

Trend: Guzzling water all day long

Carrying a water bottle around and chugging H20 all day long won't bolster health, said Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, a professor at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

The human body is an efficient water-regulating machine, said Goldfarb, who studies kidney function.

"Thirst is designed to make sure we get water in when we need it. The kidneys excrete it rapidly when it's not needed and you also lose some water through the skin," he said.

Pushing ourselves to drink more water than we need, he said, "doesn't make a lot of sense from the way the kidney works or from an evolutionary standpoint."

Drinking more than eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day isn't required for most people, unless you're an athlete or a soldier stationed in desert climes, or have other special hydration needs. Kids, for example, can sometimes get too little water. In Philadelphia, where he works, some schools don't have functioning water fountains due to lead pipe issues, or some don't have water fountains near where they're playing sports, so kids in those situations should have access to bottled water.

Goldfarb said other water-related myths include the notion that gulping lots of it flushes toxins from the body, but there's no research supporting that claim. It won't improve your complexion, either, unless you're very dehydrated.

"When you drink a glass of water, it's not targeted to the skin in your face. The percentage of cells in your face compared to the rest of your body is about the same as a 6-foot-tall man standing by the Eifel Tower. The amount of water that actually gets to the face is a thimbleful and that includes the scalp," Goldfarb said.

"It's not that we don't need water — 60 to 70 percent of body weight is water — but you have a system that is very carefully designed to be sure you have the proper amount of water," Goldfarb said.

Eight glasses a day should be plenty to do the job.

Trend: Bottled fruit smoothies

Bottled fruit smoothies are packed with sugar, said Antinoro.

"Eat fresh fruit or make your own, versus the sugar-laden bottled ones. Not to bash any brands, but a 15-ounce bottle can have 40 to 50 grams of sugar. That is about 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar," Antinoro said.

The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugars. For most American women, that means eating no more than 100 calories from sugar per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it's 150 calories per day, or about 9 teaspoons.

"If drinking fruit smoothies from a bottle is your only way of getting fruit, it's better than nothing, but eating fresh fruit or making your own version with a vegetable blend is better," Antinoro said.

Whole fruit gives you more intact fiber, she explained. And it takes more time to eat a whole apple than to gulp down a smoothie.

When making homemade smoothies, Antinoro suggested, "Add a teaspoon of chia seeds or flax to give them a fiber boost and omega 3s and other nutrients, using any fruits you enjoy. Pop in leafy greens, like spinach, kale, and broccoli, and carrots."

Trend: Hot yoga and hot fitness classes

More than 36 million U.S. adults practice yoga, according to a 2016 Yoga Alliance report, and while its many benefits are well known — it improves strength and flexibility, and can help lower stress, among other health perks — there's one type of yoga that some experts recommend crossing off your list in 2017.

"Hot yoga and hot fitness classes are a surefire way to increase your chance of overheating," said Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and a spokesperson for the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Hot yoga is practiced indoors in a room cranked up to between 105 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit and set at about 40 percent humidity. The typical hot yoga class runs 90 minutes.

It's a trend that's been around for a few years and has expanded more recently beyond yoga studios to include hot Pilates and hot cycling, for example. But some ER doctors like Glatter say working out in high-heat environments can lead to serious health risks.

"It puts you at risk for developing heat cramps and heat exhaustion which can lead to heat stroke, a potentially lethal condition. In a nutshell, your body loses the ability to cool itself, leading to dangerously high temperatures which may place you at risk for seizures, muscle breakdown known as rhabdomyolysis, and can even lead to coma," said Glatter.

Trend: No snacking after dinner

Snacking in the evening a couple of hours after dinner isn't necessarily the big diet-buster it's cracked up to be. It can actually be good for you if it's healthy and light, said Dr. Michelle Terry, a clinical professor at the University of Washington and an attending physician at Seattle Children's Hospital.

"Eating after 8 p.m. will not necessarily make you gain weight, unless you are eating low-nutrient foods in large quantities," Terry told us.

That means staying away from salty, high-calorie, high-fat, carbohydrate-packed chips and cookies. Instead, choose one of these healthier options: a small apple with peanut butter or a half-cup of cottage cheese, a half-cup of plain Greek yogurt, a cup of fat-free or low-fat milk, a small serving of raw vegetables and low-fat dip, or a handful of unsalted nuts.

If you have diabetes, eating a small snack in the evening — about 150 calories and 15 grams of carbohydrates — that contains some protein can be a healthy choice.

"Before bed, it helps control blood sugar levels. And if you feel hungry before bed, having a small snack may help you sleep better too," said Terry.

We asked top nutritionists what supplements should we be wary of.
Top Ten Supplements To Avoid!

Not all supplements are good for everyone – some, in fact, can be downright dangerous, especially if taken by the wrong person or in the wrong dosage.

Always check with your doctor when taking a new supplement or vitamin. Especially if you take other medications, as some supplements can counteract or even cause adverse reactions when mixed with certain medications.

We don't recommend any of the following supplements, regardless of what marketing hype accompanies them.

Here are 10 supplements to avoid.

Colloidal silver
Is a solution of silver particles suspended in liquid. It has been promoted as an alternative to antibiotics, a cancer preventive, and a treatment for everything from ear infections to AIDS. These claims are unproven, and I do not recommend taking it. The human body has absolutely no need for silver, and when taken, it can accumulate in the body and lead to a disfiguring skin condition called argyria, which causes bluish-gray skin pigmentation that cannot be reversed. Long-term use of oral silver products has also led to neurological problems, kidney damage, stomach distress, headaches, fatigue and skin irritation.

Yohimbe (Pausinystalia yohimbe)
Is an herbal remedy that comes from the bark of an African tree. Before Viagra, drugs containing yohimbine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in yohimbe bark extract, were used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). However, levels of yohimbine in yohimbe bark extract vary considerably and are often very low. Yohimbe can also have serious side effects including paralysis, fatigue, stomach disorders and even death. I don't recommend it, and harvesting of its bark is driving the yohimbe species to extinction.

Aconite (Aconitum napellus)
Comes from monkshood, one of the most poisonous plants known. Preparations made from this herb are used in very small doses in traditional Chinese medicine and the Ayurvedic tradition to treat pain related to conditions including arthritis, cancer, gout, inflammation and migraine headaches. However, studies of compounds from it have found no evidence to support claims for their usefulness as anesthetics or as treatments for circulatory and neurological conditions. Aconite can cause irregular heartbeat, heart failure, and death, and even in topical form is dangerous. Avoid it.

Country Mallow (Sida cordifolia)
Contains ephedrine, a potentially dangerous stimulant. For this reason, in 2004, the FDA banned the sale of country mallow as well as ephedra (herb) and all products containing ephedrine. Risks include increased blood pressure and stress on the heart, which the FDA concluded would negate any benefits of losing weight. I agree with the FDA and do not recommend it

Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus)
Is used as a mild sedative, for prevention of gallstones, and to treat ailments as diverse as intestinal and digestive problems, liver disease, and eye irritation. Alkaloids from celandine have been promoted for cancer treatment, but I have seen no scientific evidence that demonstrates its effectiveness. Celandine has been reported to cause hepatitis and may be to blame for unexplained cases of the disease. It also can cause rashes, itching, and serious allergic reactions in some people. Avoid it.

Germanium
A trace element used in the production of electronic devices, germanium has been promoted as a treatment for leukemia and other types of cancer as well as asthma, diabetes, hypertension, cardiac insufficiency, Parkinson's disease, neuralgia, chronic fatigue, hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver and neurosis. Promoters also claim that germanium stimulates the body's production of interferon, a naturally occurring immune system compound and anticancer agent, and boosts the activity of the immune system's natural killer cells that attack invading germs. I have seen no scientific evidence that supports any of these claims and furthermore, it has been linked to kidney and liver damage. I do not recommend germanium.

Comfrey
Also known as blackwort, common comfrey and slippery root - is used for cough, heavy menstrual periods, chest pain and cancer. But like coltsfoot, it's been linked to liver damage and cancer. The FDA told manufacturers to remove comfrey products from the market in 2001.

Coltsfoot
This remedy is used for cough, sore throat, laryngitis, bronchitis and asthma. But it has been linked to liver damage and cancer. Coltsfoot is also known as coughwort, farfarae folium leaf and foalswort.

Chaparral
Made from the creosote bush, chaparral - also known as Larrea divaricata and larreastat - is used for colds, weight loss, infections, inflammation, cancer and "detoxification." It can cause liver and kidney problems. The FDA advises against taking chaparral.

Bitter Orange
It's used for weight loss, allergies, and nasal congestion. But it's been linked to fainting, heart trouble, stroke and even death. Also known as aurantii fructus, Citrus aurantium and zhi shi, bitter orange contains synephrine, a compound similar to ephedrine, which the FDA banned in 2004.
Anxiety: Natural, Simple Cures You Can Try At Home

We all have nagging worries that keep us up at night. In fact, worrying is hard-wired into our DNA, and can even be beneficial, especially when it motivates us to save for the future. But worrying can become toxic to your health when it turns into anxiety and leads to panic attacks. Here, we look at natural methods to manage your anxiety, without the use of prescription medication.

"If you want to be relaxed and open, make lifestyle changes instead of relying on drugs. They can interfere with mental function, contribute to depression and lead to dependence." — Dr. Andrew Weil

What Causes Anxiety?

Break the Worry Loop: Quiet the Brain

Constant worry is a neurological process, rather than simply a "feeling," then we can take steps to relieve it.

Deep inside our brains is an almond-shaped structure called the amygdala, which acts as our fear and anxiety center. When we experience a potential worry, the amygdala sends warning messages to the cortex, the rational part of our brain, which can assess whether that worry is of true concern. As the rational cortex is flooded with more and more warning signals from the amygdala, however, it is unable to process them all, leading to worry loops or anxiety.

Fortunately, there are several steps we can take to quiet the brain and worry less:

Spend 15 minutes a day acknowledging your worries in a tangible way. Create a list of your top 10 worries or a calendar of stressful upcoming events allows you to strategize and deal with each problem directly, so they don't balloon to an unmanageable size.

Simple Fixes You Can Do Right Now

Breathe

Deep belly breathing, whether in a yoga class, at the office, or on your couch, is helpful in interrupting irrational thoughts. If you frequently experience toxic worry, Hold your breath!

Ok, let it out now. We're not recommending that you turn blue, but yoga breathing has been shown to be effective in lowering stress and anxiety. In his bestselling 2011 book Spontaneous Happiness, Andrew Weil, MD, introduced a classic yoga breathing technique he calls the 4-7-8 breath.

One reason it works is that you can't breathe deeply and be anxious at the same time. To do the 4-7-8 breath, exhale completely through your mouth, then inhale through your nose for a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Now let it out slowly through your mouth for a count of eight. Repeat at least twice a day.

Exercise

Exercise is safe, good for the brain, and a powerful antidote to depression and anxiety, both immediately and in the long term. "If you exercise on a regular basis, you'll have more self-esteem and feel healthier," says Drew Ramsey, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University, who blogs at http://www.DrewRamseyMD.com.

"One of the major causes of anxiety is worrying about illness and health, and that dissipates when you are fit."

The 21-minute cure

Twenty-one minutes: That's about how long it takes for exercise to reliably reduce anxiety, studies show, give or take a minute. "If you're really anxious and you hop on a treadmill, you will feel more calm after the workout," Dr. Ramsey says.

"I generally ask my patients to spend 20 to 30 minutes in an activity that gets their heart rate up, whether it's a treadmill or elliptical or stair stepping—anything you like. If you rowed in college, get back to rowing. If you don't exercise, start taking brisk walks."

Warm up

Ever wonder why you feel so relaxed after a spell in the sauna or a steam room? Heating up your body reduces muscle tension and anxiety, research finds. Sensations of warmth may alter neural circuits that control mood, including those that affect the neurotransmitter serotonin. Warming up may be one of the ways that exercise—not to mention curling up by a fire with a cozy cup of tea—boosts mood.

As one group of researchers put it, "Whether lying on the beach in the midday sun on a Caribbean island, grabbing a few minutes in the sauna or spa after work, or sitting in a hot bath or Jacuzzi in the evening, we often associate feeling warm with a sense of relaxation and well-being."

Aromatherapy

When you need to calm down quickly, try Aromatherapy. The scents of bergamot, lavender, eucalyptus, and others go straight to the amygdala (the brain's fear and anxiety center) creating an immediate sense of calm and lowering your blood pressure. Many oils, candles or diffusers are readily available at your local health food store or online. You can even carry a small roll-on to apply to your wrist if you are out in public and begin to feel anxiety or panic.

Treat Worry-Related Stomach Issues: Soothe Your GI Tract

Your stomach acts as a "second brain" when it comes to worrying. In fact, like our brains, our stomachs have their own nervous systems, called the enteric nervous system. When we worry, millions of receptors embedded in the gastrointestinal tract react to fear by speeding up or slowing down our digestion, which can lead to nausea, diarrhea and heartburn.

Simple, natural treatments for anxiety-related stomach issues:

Eat something, quick

"Almost universally, people get more anxious and irritable when they are hungry," says Dr. Ramsey, coauthor of The Happiness Diet. "When you get an anxiety attack, it may mean your blood sugar is dropping. The best thing to do is to have a quick sustaining snack, like a handful of walnuts, or a piece of dark chocolate, along with a glass of water or a nice cup of hot tea."

In the long term, diet is key to reducing anxiety, says Dr. Ramsey. His advice: Eat a whole-foods, plant-based diet with carefully selected meat and seafood, plenty of leafy greens (such as kale) to get folate, and a wide variety of phytonutrients to help reduce anxiety.

Eat breakfast

Stop starving yourself, advises Dr. Ramsey. "Many people with anxiety disorders skip breakfast. I recommend that people eat things like eggs, which are a satiating and filling protein, and are nature's top source of choline. Low levels of choline are associated with increased anxiety."

Lemon balm

Named after the Greek word for "honey bee," lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), has been used at least since the Middle Ages to reduce stress and anxiety, and help with sleep. In one study of healthy volunteers, those who took standardized lemon balm extracts (600 mg) were more calm and alert than those who took a placebo.

While it's generally safe, be aware that some studies have found that taking too much can actually make you more anxious. So follow directions and start with the smallest dose. Lemon balm is sold as a tea, capsule, and tincture. It's often combined with other calming herbs such as hops, chamomile, and valerian. Don't take Lemon Balm or other sedative herbs when you are also taking a prescription sedative.

Switch to Green Tea

If you drink coffee or black tea, the caffeine might be adding to your anxiety. Try cutting back to 1 cup with or after breakfast and then drinking green tea the rest of the day. Green tea still contains some caffeine so it can help keep you energized, but because green tea contains L-theanine it can also help you relax.

Research shows that L-theanine helps curb a rising heart rate and blood pressure, and studies have found that it reduces anxiety. In one study, anxiety-prone subjects were calmer and more focused during a test if they took 200 milligrams of L-theanine beforehand.

Elixir

Try an anti-anxiety elixir of 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, and a half teaspoon of honey, taken 3 times per day in tea. This traditional Indian remedy is thought to balance the body by increasing energy in the digestive system, thereby reducing excess energy in the mind. Additionally, studies show that lemon juice lowers blood pressure by strengthening capillaries and may stimulate weak constitutions. Ginger calms the stomach, while honey controls the blood sugar instability that accompanies worrying.

Take an Integrative Approach to Worry: Focus on the Mind-Body Connection

Conventional medicine views worry on a physiological level; integrative medicine seeks to evaluate the mind, body and spirit in conjunction, looking for imbalances in "energy."

Take a 'forest bath'

The Japanese call it Shinrin-yoku, literally "forest bath." You and I know it as a walk in the woods. Japanese researchers measured body changes in people who walked for about 20 minutes in a beautiful forest, with the woodsy smells and the sounds of a running stream.

The forest bathers had lower stress hormone levels after their walk than they did after a comparable walk in an urban area.

Fixing Anxiety Long Term

Advanced exercise

While all the above techniques will no doubt provide immediate relief, you may want to manage and even rid yourself of anxiety permanently. Exercise, like Yoga and Tai Chi can help ground it's practitioners while showing them how to breathe and be flexible in encountering the stress of or day to day lives.

Learn mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness meditation, originally a Buddhist practice but now a mainstream therapy, is particularly effective in treating anxiety, says Teresa M. Edenfield, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham, N.C., who often uses it to treat anxiety patients. "The act of practicing mindful awareness allows one to experience the true essence of each moment as it really occurs, rather than what is expected or feared," she says.

How to begin? You can start by simply "paying attention to the present moment, intentionally, with curiosity, and with an effort to attend non-judgmentally," Edenfield says.

Breath and question

To stay mindful, ask yourself simple questions while practicing breathing exercises, Edenfield suggests. "Sit in a comfortable place, close your eyes, and focus on how your breath feels coming in and out of your body. Now ask yourself silent questions while focusing on the breath."

What is the temperature of the air as it enters your nose? How does your breath feel different as it leaves your body? How does the air feel as it fills your lungs?

Give yourself credit

Are you having anxious thoughts? Congratulations. You're aware of your emotional state, and that awareness is the first step in reducing anxiety, says Edenfield.

"Remember to give yourself credit for being aware that you are having anxious thoughts, and probably body changes. This is truly a skill of mindfulness that must be learned, and is essential in making the next steps of intervening through strategies such as positive self-talk, cognitive reframing, or the use of mindfulness or relaxation strategies."

Coltsfoot
This remedy is used for cough, sore throat, laryngitis, bronchitis, and asthma. But it has been linked to liver damage and cancer. Coltsfoot is also known as coughwort, farfarae, folium leaf, and foalswort.

Chaparral
Made from the creosote bush, chaparral - also known as Larrea divaricata, and larreastat - is used for colds, weight loss, infections, inflammation, cancer and "detoxification." It can cause liver and kidney problems.

Beauty Headlines Interviews Dermatologists on Personal Skin Care Routine

Beauty Headlines asked top dermatologists for personal tips on how they keep their skin young, healthy, and glowing.

Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/22/2016 -- At Beauty Headlines we are passionate about cutting through the advertising and marketing noise while delivering clear simple info and advice on health and beauty matters in the 21st century. Check BeautyHeadlines.com daily for the latest trends, tips, and honest advice without all the noise.

We asked several top area dermatologists what they do to take care of their own skin. Here are their top 12 answers.

1. Moisturize the Old Fashioned Way

To keep your skin supple splashing with cold water can work wonders. It's one of the beauty secrets I learned in Sweden and France. For an American twist try making your own mist in a spay bottle. I put some cucumber slices in a spray bottle and keep it in my mini fridge at work. It refreshes and wakes me up in the afternoon! There are also some misting mineral waters in the beauty aisle that have added antioxidants like selenium that can protect against sun damage. Put one in your glove box and spritz your face when stuck in traffic.

2. Skip the Salt

I used to drink more than six cans of diet soda a day, but then I realized they had a lot of sodium (anywhere from 25 to 50 mg per can) That all added up to make my eyes and jawline puffy, so I cut back and eventually switched to a sodium-free diet soda. It satisfies my cravings and my skin looks a whole lot better.

3. Eat a Skin-Saving Breakfast

The first meal of the day always has some almonds or walnuts. Nuts contain essential fatty acids, which really slam the brakes on inflammation. Inflammation accelerates aging; wrinkles, sagging skin, and blotchiness. Are nuts about nuts? Wild caught salmon, tuna, and halibut are great sources for fatty and good for your waistline and diet too, just make sure they are wild caught.

4. Time for Tea

I started drinking green and black tea for my health and to cut back on coffee and soda, but now I drink 4-6 cups a day for my skin. Research shows that both green and black tea contain protective compounds—like theraflavins and EGCG. These help prevent the breakdown of collagen (the cause of wrinkles), plus they might also protect against skin cancer!

5. Pour on the Sunscreen

The best way to ensure younger looking skin is UV protection! To make sure you are getting enough sunscreen fill the hollow of your palm (about 1 teaspoon) with a 30 SPF (or higher) Broad-Spectrum sunscreen and then coat your entire face, neck, and ears. This is usually enough sunscreen for two coats but that's how you make sure you're covered. Reapply every 3+ hours you are outside.

6. Prolong with Powder

Sunscreen stops working in as little as 3 hours, so reapplying is key. For simple quick touch-ups try a powder sunscreen. Powder sunscreens are light, so your makeup stays intact.

7. Replace that Tan

A recent study found a tiny bit of tint can takes years off your face by giving you a healthy glow and by evening out your skin tone. The study found a healthy even skin tone is a key marker of youthfulness. Look for a moisturizing lotion combined with a low level of self-tanner.

8. Mini Zen Retreat

Dermatologists suffer from stress too! High levels of tension and anxiety can spike hormone production that aggravates existing skin conditions like psoriasis and leads to new breakouts. Controlling stress not only keep you calm, but has immediate effects on you skin. Try a relaxing 15 minute timeout! Put on a cooling eye mask or apply a face mask and then relax on the couch or on the bed. Sometimes a little spa or yoga music helps too. Light some incense. Every little bit helps! And make sure and turn off you cell phone!

9. Veggies to Wear?

Frozen corn or peas help soothe itchy, irritated eyes. We all know eating our veggies is good for us, but how about wearing them! One of the first things I do when I get home from a long day is to remove my makeup and put a bag of frozen corn on my eyelids for about 5 minutes. The cold helps reduce swelling and inflammation. Unlike inflexible ice packs, a bag of frozen veggies easily conforms to the shape of your eyes for a faster cooling and relaxing relief!

10. Tag Team Treatments

A tag team regimen can often be the key to rapid rejuvenation and healing. Ingredients like sunscreen and antioxidants in the A.M. and retinol and peptides in the P.M. can work wonders as a team.

11. Take it Easy

Repeated jarring from high impact exercise like running can weaken collagen and lead to premature aging. So until a face bra is invented, stick to walking and pilates or yoga.

12. Speaking of Yoga

A good dermatologist will bend over backward for great skin. Well, yoga moves like sun salutations and downward-facing dog can improve circulation and give your skin that lovely yoga glow. Regular yoga practice besides keeping you fit and limber also reduces stress and gives you a much needed boost of oxygen through installing deep breathing techniques.
