American Medical ID Partners with Marfan Foundation to Raise Awareness on Rare Condition

Empowering patients in an emergency is the key aim of new partnership between leading medical ID company and foundation supporting those with a rare condition called Marfan Syndrome.

Houston, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/18/2017 -- Leading medical ID manufacturer, American Medical ID has recently partnered with The Marfan Foundation to help raise awareness of Marfan syndrome and related disorders, which put people at risk for life-threatening cardiovascular emergencies. The partnership makes medical alert jewelry such as Marfan awareness bracelets and necklaces, more accessible to people living with these potentially fatal conditions.

It is estimated that 200,000 people in the US are living with Marfan syndrome and related connective tissue disorders. Experts estimate that half of the people living with these conditions do not know they have it and are at risk of a sudden early death from a tear in their aorta, the large artery that takes blood away from the heart.

"Medical ID bracelets are an important tool in helping people get appropriate evaluation and treatment in an emergency situation, when time is of the essence and the patient may not be able to communicate his or her medical history," said Jan Lynch, MSN, RN, Director of The Marfan Foundation's Help & Resource Center. "The importance of medical ID jewelry is amplified further for our patient community because aortic dissection may not be the first problem that emergency personnel think of, especially in individuals who may be younger and – on the outside – appear to be healthy. Emergency healthcare providers are accustomed to looking for medical ID jewelry; having a bracelet that indicates the risk of aortic dissection can expedite life-saving treatment."

Quick and efficient diagnosis and treatment of aortic dissection is critical, and a medical ID jewelry is a simple yet effective way to self-advocate and alert others about the risks an individual faces. In an emergency that renders a person unconscious or unable to speak (i.e., aortic tear or rupture), a custom engraved medical ID lets emergency responders know that the individual lives with a medical problem that puts them at risk and other essential medical information, including current prescriptions. As a result, medical IDs help avoid drug interaction and treatments that are not suitable and may cause complications for people living with Marfan syndrome. Wearing a medical ID bracelet or necklace helps ensure individuals receive the right diagnosis and precise treatment in a timely fashion.

Through this partnership, American Medical ID and The Marfan Foundation hope to increase awareness of Marfan syndrome and related disorders and the role medical IDs can play in improving patient outcomes. It is also hoped that more emergency healthcare personnel learn about aortic dissection and its risk factors, as a result. The partnership includes a discount program initiated by American Medical ID for all members of The Marfan Foundation community. For every qualified sale of Marfan awareness medical IDs, American Medical ID gives back 10% of the proceeds to help fund The Marfan Foundation's programs and patient services.

In addition, the company also launched an informative online resource specifically for people living with Marfan syndrome. The page highlights the use and importance of wearing medical IDs, including help with choosing the right medical ID and proper engraving for Marfan syndrome and related disorders.

"It is our pleasure to be working with The Marfan Foundation and we are thankful to be given the chance to support their valuable mission. We are inspired to know more about the signs of Marfan, join hands with their community, and fight for victory," said Rick Russell, CEO, American Medical ID.

"If you have a chronic medical condition, wearing a medical ID could save your life. It is a simple way to alert first responders of your most pertinent medical needs.
"I have had much more peace of mind knowing that my son, Joshua, who was born missing one chamber of his heart, has a medical ID bracelet. Mended Little Hearts cannot thank you enough, American Medical ID, for your generosity in donating a medical ID bracelet for every Mended Little Hearts child so other parents can have peace of mind," said Jodi Lemacks, National Program Director for Mended Little Hearts and longtime customer of American Medical ID.
