Plate Versus Tubular Heat Exchangers

At Advanced Industrial Components (AIC), they are often asked by their clients: “What heat exchanger type should I use - plate or tubular?” The answer is… it depends on their application.

Oakville, ON -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/22/2017 -- At Advanced Industrial Components (AIC), they are often asked by their clients: "What heat exchanger type should I use - plate or tubular?" The answer is… it depends on their application. Here they will take a quick look at a few variables to consider the next time someone is in the market for a heat exchanger.

Fluid Flow and Pressure Drops: A tubular type of heat exchanger (removable u-tube, straight tube, or welded shell & tube design) will generally allow for larger amounts of fluid through the unit with relatively lower pressure drops than when compared to a plate exchanger (brazed plate or plate & frame), whose dense plate packs acts as a restriction barrier.

Heat Transfer Area: Due to the thin plates and chevron designs of their tight plate packs, plate heat exchangers have a high heat transfer rate to surface area ratio, meaning that these exchangers may be more favourable for applications with lower temperature differentials or when a close temperature approach is required. For plate & frame heat exchangers, if the frame allows for it, additional plates may be added on to an existing unit, on site, to increase the heating surface area.

Hardiness: Industries such as oil & gas prefer the use of tubular heat exchangers for the ruggedness and flexibility of the design. Thick tubes and shells. Use of expansion joints. Resilience with different fluid types - viscous oils, steam, etc. There is wider scope in tubular designs than compared to plate designs, enabling more customization of the product to suit a client's particular needs.

Maintenance: Both plate and tubular designs carry products that are either 'removable' or 'welded/brazed'. Plate packs in plate & frame exchangers may be removed, cleansed, and/or replaced. Tube bundles in u-tube or straight tube heat exchangers may be removed, cleansed, and/or replaced. One may argue that it is a more arduous task in one design than the other; however, that is up to the client to determine.

Certifications: If required, both plate and tubular heat exchangers may be designed to the ASME Code. Tubular exchangers may also be governed by TEMA standards.

Learn More at 'Lunch-and-Learn' Heat Exchanger Sessions Offered by AIC Heat Exchangers

Oakville, ON -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/26/2017 -- Advanced Industrial Components (AIC) is pleased to offer technical, 'Lunch & Learn' Heat Exchanger Sessions to new and existing clients throughout Canada and the United States, in their continuing efforts to provide customer-centric services to the heat exchanger market.

These product training sessions are hosted by AIC technical associates, at a time and place of the new or existing client's convenience. AIC's 'Lunch & Learn' programs provide forums where participants may effectively learn, and be properly informed, in the comforts of their own surroundings.

The participants will be introduced to AIC's large and diverse selection of heat transfer product lines - from the conventional copper and nickel brazed plate heat exchangers and plate and frames (single and double walls) - to AIC's unique, vertical, JAD stainless steel, shell and coil exchangers - to their line of corrosion-resistant products (titanium and marine-grade) for those aggressive environments – to their sanitary heat exchangers for the most exacting applications - and AIC's brand of boiler economizers.

Throughout the presentation, participants will develop a better understanding of the particulars of each type of heat transfer product, and how and where to utilize them in the marketplace. Participants will learn how to navigate through AIC's online heat exchanger sizing program, or at the least, identify the requirements necessary to properly size a heat exchanger.

Similarly, AIC can tailor the sessions according to the new or existing client's needs, concentrating on particular areas of interest.

Whether an engineering consulting firm, a distributor or wholesaler, a large maintenance facility, or a sales company interested in representing AIC heat transfer products, please feel free to visit their official website at http://www.aicheatexchangers.com, contact an AIC associate by phone at 905-829-4666, or send an inquiry to ask@aicheatexchangers.com to schedule an AIC 'Lunch-and-Learn' Session.

AIC Heat Exchanges now offers 'Lunch and Learn' sessions for new and current clients who want to learn more about their products and solutions.

AIC Heat Exchangers Helps Select the Right Heat Exchanger, the First Time

At AIC Heat Exchangers, they understand the challenges one can face when trying to determine the most suitable heat exchanger for a particular application.

Oakville, ON -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/28/2017 -- At AIC Heat Exchangers, they understand the challenges one can face when trying to determine the most suitable heat exchanger for a particular application. Because heat exchangers are found in such vast and different industries and applications, from petrochemical to food & beverage, from residential swimming pools to industrial boiler rooms, from marine to sanitary environments, and everything in between, finding a right product may seem like a daunting task.

When deciding on the design and type of heat exchanger, consideration must be taken to its operating environment.A heat exchanger is not an electrical appliance that 'creates' heat; rather, it is a vessel that facilitates the transfer of heat from one medium to another. As such, it works in conjunction with the other equipment (pumps, boilers, valves, etc.) in the system to ensure its performance.

Proper understanding, and actively maintaining and controlling the temperature, flow, and pressure inputs into the heat exchanger, and defining its outputs - exit temperatures, BTU requirements- will assist in the overall sizing of the heat exchanger. Selection of a product that is either undersized or too oversized may lower the heat transfer effectiveness of the unit.

Use of fabrication materials incompatible with the operating fluid may lead to premature heat exchanger failures. Is the operating fluid potentially corrosive to certain materials? What is its pH level? This will determine if elements such as copper or nickel-brazing plates, EPDM or Viton gaskets, welded stainless steel, titanium, or marine or sanitary grade materials are required.

The option between rigid (welded or brazed), removable (gasketted), or flexible (expansion joints/coiled tubes) heat exchangers is dependent upon the nature of the operating fluid. Are there particles present in the stream? Will there be a phase change within the unit? How well controlled is the flow and pressure in the system? Are there size restrictions?

At AIC, their team of technical associates will personally assists clients with their specific application. Their diverse collection of heat exchanger types, designs, and materials, their years of heat transfer knowledge, and their customer-centric attention to service, will ensure that they select the best heat exchanger for their clients' needs.
