Wallace Detroit Guitars Collaborates with Chevrolet to Create Handmade Guitars in Celebration of the Chevy Trucks Centennial

First run of exclusive instrument line will be constructed out of original maple wood from the Chevy truck plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana

Detroit, MI -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/23/2018 -- Wallace Detroit Guitars (WDG), manufacturer of guitars created out of the wood of former Detroit landmarks, is collaborating with Chevrolet to release a limited-edition line of guitars celebrating the Chevy Trucks Centennial. The first run of guitars will be handcrafted out of maple sourced from General Motors' own Fort Wayne, Indiana, truck plant.

Formed in nearby Flint, Michigan, in 1908 and headquartered today in Detroit, General Motors and Chevrolet® have played a pivotal role in the development of the Motor City and its storied automobile history.

"Chevrolet is a foundational element in the story of Detroit," said Mark Wallace, founder of Wallace Detroit Guitars. "As a company that honors the history of Detroit in every instrument we make, we couldn't miss this opportunity to celebrate a century of Chevrolet trucks. The gorgeous maple used in these limited-run instruments is sourced from the Chevy plant itself, adding a piece of GM's history as well as providing a sonic landscape that is unlike any other instrument."

"The Chevy Trucks Centennial is a huge milestone for the Chevrolet brand, and we know it is equally important for our customers," said Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet Trucks advertising and marketing director. "We are so excited to partner with Detroit-based Wallace Detroit Guitars to offer one more way for our customers to celebrate this accomplishment with us."

Anniversary-Worthy Construction

The reclaimed long grain maple has been refined into the company's Wallacaster body shape, with an oil-finished neck, rosewood fingerboard, a pickguard in Chevrolet's Centennial Blue, and finished with a clear high-gloss lacquer. The guitar's pickups have been handcrafted to resemble the iconic Heritage bowtie emblem, which was designed specifically to celebrate the Chevy Trucks Centennial.

Customers have their choice of maple from the Fort Wayne Chevy plant, or maple from the floorboards of the former Detroit Fire Department Headquarter building — both featuring historical significance.

Celebrating 100 Years

Last November, during the 51st annual Country Music Awards (CMAs), Wallace Detroit Guitars presented a custom-model electric guitar to Chevrolet® in honor of the 100th anniversary of the brand's iconic truck. Several artists performing and attending the CMAs signed the guitar which was displayed in the Chevrolet® red carpet area during the awards show and was later auctioned off for charity.

Availability

The Chevy line of Wallace Detroit Guitars will be carried at the General Motors store in Detroit's Renaissance Center, on GM's website and its catalog. The instruments are also available directly from WDG's website, wallacedetroitguitars.com.

Wallace Detroit Guitars' Reclaimed Guitar Bodies Now Available for Individual Sale

The bodies constructed from the wood of former Detroit landmarks offer players the opportunity to create their own custom WDG instrument

Detroit, MI -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/27/2018 -- Wallace Detroit Guitars, maker of guitars created from the wood of former Detroit landmarks, has announced that its guitar bodies are now available for individual sale — allowing players to create their own custom guitars that feature an authentic, hand-made touch of Detroit history. The guitar bodies are available for viewing and purchasing in the Wallace Detroit Guitars online shop.

"We have been getting requests for our guitar bodies for quite a while, so we are excited that we can now offer these quality pieces to our customers," said Mark Wallace, founder of Wallace Detroit Guitars. "Selling the bodies individually allows players to get creative and build their own musical work of art while also enjoying a little nostalgic piece of our city."

Historical Bodies

WDG's instruments are crafted of reclaimed wood from various Detroit historical landmarks, including former buildings that once lined Detroit's storied Michigan Avenue — which has long been considered to be the state's most important thoroughfare. Among this wood are the original floorboards of the former Detroit Fire Department Headquarters, Michigan's oldest fire department.

The bodies for sale are available in end grain or long grain pine from former Michigan Avenue buildings, as well as maple from the Fire Department Headquarters. In addition to offering individual bodies, Wallace Detroit Guitars will also be taking special wood and finish requests. To help customers with their purchases, WDG now offers 6-month layaway on all of its guitars and bodies.

Pricing

Completely routed and oil-finished bodies will be available for $800. Routed unfinished bodies will be available for $675, while a completely unfinished body will be offered at $600.

"We are excited to see what our customers do with our guitar bodies," Wallace said. "So, we are encouraging players to send us images of their finished guitars, and we will send them a WDG t-shirt as a 'thanks' and also share their photo on social media."

'If These Walls Could Speak': Wallace Detroit Guitars' New Limited Edition Brewster Wheeler Series Makes Detroit's Legendary Past Come to Life

Limited edition electric guitars feature aged maple wood harvested from historic local rec center frequented by music and boxing legends

Detroit, MI -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/21/2017 -- Wallace Detroit Guitars, a Detroit-based guitar manufacturer that creates unique and timeless instruments out of reclaimed wood from local landmarks, announced its limited edition Brewster Wheeler Series is now in production. The new line of exclusive instruments are constructed of wood harvested from the historic Brewster Wheeler Recreation, which was frequented by many Detroit legends including music artists Diana Ross and the Supremes, boxing Joe Louis and many others.

"It's really a premier series for us, since the story of Brewster Wheeler is such an amazing one and because the wood that we have discovered is truly unique," said Mark Wallace, owner of Wallace Detroit Guitars. "The maple from the benches is beautiful and completely flawless, which is unusual. We are going to try to leave some of the original paint from the benches to show how far the wood has come from where it was originally."

Keeping History Alive

Opening in 1929, the Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center was a hub for community activity and possibly best known as the gym where professional boxer Joe Louis trained. Many local musical legends, including Diana Ross and the Supremes and The Funk Brothers, lived in the nearby Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects and frequented the center.

The Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center officially closed in 2006 due to a lack of funding and a $50 million project is currently in the works to redevelop the space that has been vacant ever since.

"For a long while, The Brewster Wheeler building was a symbol of urban decay, but that environment bred some of Detroit's brightest musical stars like Diana Ross who used to hang out at the center," Wallace said. "I was very excited to be able to pull wood that was thought to be a lost cause and turn it into heirloom quality musical instruments."

Featuring solid maple bodies and rosewood fretboards, Wallace Detroit Guitars will produce 15 exclusive single-cutaway guitars, each featuring hand scatter-wound pickups for a classic vintage sound. The guitars will be engraved with a specially assigned serial number beginning with the numbers 313 in homage to Detroit's area code, and a separate prefix number specific to this series.

Breathing New Life into Detroit's Past

Last month, Wallace Detroit Guitars released its Firehouse Series of guitars crafted out of reclaimed wood from the historic Detroit Fire Department Headquarters building, which stood on a site that had been used by Detroit fire departments continuously since the 1840s. The existing structure was built in 1929, but the Fire Department Headquarters were moved in 2013 to make way for the boutique Detroit Foundation Hotel.

The Firehouse Series instruments — which are available now — are constructed of salvaged pine and maple from the storied building's floorboards.

Each instrument that Wallace Detroit Guitars makes features a certificate of authenticity and ships with a one-of-a-kind handmade guitar strap fashioned out of reclaimed car upholstery and a hard-shell leather case.

Wallace Detroit Guitars Announces Limited Edition 'Firehouse Series', Handcrafted with Reclaimed Wood from Iconic Detroit Firehouse

Aged Maple and Pine Salvaged from Floor of Old Detroit Landmark Inspires Twelve One of a Kind, Timeless Instruments

Detroit, MI -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/06/2017 -- Wallace Detroit Guitars, a Detroit-based guitar company that builds unique and timeless instruments using reclaimed wood from local landmarks, announced a limited edition 'Firehouse Series', available now. The instruments are lovingly crafted with original wood from the former Detroit Fire Department Headquarters, located at 250 West Larned Street in Detroit. Salvaged pine and maple from the building's floorboards will allow Wallace Detroit Guitars to build ten of its flagship single-cutaway guitars and two guitars with a brand new offset body shape. Like all Wallace Detroit Guitars, these instruments will feature expert craftsmanship and premium components for a playing experience and sound that matches their one-of-a kind historical significance.

The new guitars are available now to coincide with the launch of Wallace Detroit Guitars' new website, located at http://www.wallacedetroitguitars.com, and which features detailed photographs and specifications of each guitar. It also provides a deep dive into the remarkable origins and craftsmanship of these unique instruments, as well as availability and ordering information.

"Our goal with these guitars is to preserve the history of the city we love while honoring its tradition of superior craftsmanship," says Wallace Detroit Guitars owner Mark Wallace. "Detroit is a community of people who know how to make stuff, and our company is cut from that same cloth. The firehouse at 250 West Larned Street served our city with honor for many years, and we are pleased to be able to preserve its history in this truly unique limited edition of instruments."

For Wallace, these instruments mirror the revitalization of his beloved city, which is welcoming new ideas and creativity while continuing to draw from its rich past. "I'm trying to take something that was once great but has been and cast aside and transforming it into something new and vital," he says. "It's an exciting time for the city of Detroit because there are a lot of other businesses and organizations working from that same ideology. There's really an energy building up."

A Landmark in Fire Safety

The firehouse building, located on 250 West Larned Street in downtown Detroit, stands on a site that has been in use by fire departments continuously since about 1840. The existing structure was built in 1929 after a design by Hans Gehrke, a leading Detroit architect during the pre-war era. Four large arches with massive red doors are the centerpieces of its iconic four-story brick and terra cotta facade. It was among the first firehouses in the city designed without accommodations for horses, which had been retired from service seven years earlier. After years of service as a fire station, the building would go on to serve as the long-time Detroit Fire Department headquarters until 2013. Conveniently located across the street from the Cobo Center, it is now being renovated for conversion into a boutique hotel.

Wallace was alerted to the cache of historic wood from the firehouse through his relationship with the Architectural Salvage Warehouse of Detroit, a non-profit organization that helps in the deconstruction of historic buildings in the city. "They care about the city just us as much as we do, so we're always happy to support them in their efforts, which include providing jobs and training to locals as well as protecting historical resources," says Wallace.

What's Old Is New

The first guitars released from the firehouse wood will be a pair made of pine and featuring a brand new offset body shaped, designed by Wallace Detroit Guitars. Eye-catching and comfortable to wear, the smoothly rounded dual 'horns' cut a classic profile on-stage or in the studio. "Pine is a lighter, softer wood with more air inside of it as compared to common guitar lumbers like ash or poplar," says Wallace. "That allows it to resonate a bit more for a nice prolonged tone." Pine has only begun to see wide use in guitar making within the last ten years, so these guitars present a unique opportunity to own a pine guitar with the sound and feel of vintage wood.

The Sound of the Motor City

Wallace Detroit Guitars was also able to salvage enough maple from the firehouse to build an edition of ten single-cutaway guitars, the company's signature body shape. Each wood is hand-finished with a hand-rubbed oil finish that preserves the wood's natural look and protects it for years to come. The vintage maple lends the guitar a clear, bright attack with musical sustain perfect for any style of music. "The resins inside an older wood will have crystallized more and therefore be more stable, so these guitar will have a nice mature tone," says Wallace.

All Wallace Detroit Guitars feature a neck built from maple sourced from Michigan forests and include a hand-cut bone nut. The pickups are hand scatter-wound in-house for a classic vintage sound. Each guitar will be engraved with a specially assigned serial number beginning with the numbers 313 for the area code of Detroit, followed by DFD for the Detroit Fire Department—also notably emblazoned above the building's pedestrian doors—and finally an edition number. Like classic motorcycle parts, the butt of the neck and neck pocket are engraved with matching serial numbers as well to ensure that original components are traceable. Each guitar also ships with a one-of-a-kind hand-made guitar strap fashioned out of reclaimed car upholstery and a hard-shell leather case.

The Firehouse Series guitars start at $2,800 USD.
