The Markets in Financial Instruments Directive is a regulatory framework of EU Legislation, initiated to protect investors and to regulate the investment intermediaries who deal with financial instruments and collective investment schemes along with the venues where such instruments are traded. The regulation aims at increasing the transparency across the financial markets in the European Union; and standardizes any regulatory disclosures that are needed for operating in particular markets.

The directive was applied in November 2007 across the EU and is now amended to improvise on the overall functioning of financial markets in case of financial crisis as well as strengthen the measures for investor protection. The changes will take effect from January 3, 2018, under MiFID II. The changes include strict transparency rules, organized trading, firms shifting to regulated and multi-lateral trading platforms and call recording. One of the major changes is that of call recording. Any firm or individual who is involved in offering trading advice must record and store any mobile communication for 5 years.
