Divideon Releases xvc 2.0 - An Open-Source Video Codec with a Royalty-Free Baseline

It has been less than a year since the first release of the xvc video codec. Now comes the second version of xvc with significant enhancements such as improved compression performance, an LGPL licensing option and a royalty-free baseline profile.

Stockholm, Sweden -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/03/2018 -- The software video compression company Divideon is today making the official release of the second version of xvc. The xvc video codec is a software-defined next-generation video codec specifically developed to provide high compression performance and good visual quality in low-bitrate streaming applications.

The first version of xvc was released in September 2017 and was able to clearly outperform all existing video codecs including HEVC. The second version of xvc delivers even better performance and makes it possible to reduce the bitrate compared to the recently released AV1 codec by between 10% and 20% for the same visual quality.

All of this is made possible with a flexible and modular reference implementation publicly available at GitHub under a dual-licensing scheme; an LGPL license and a commercial license.

The xvc codec is software-defined, which means that conformance for bitstreams, encoders and decoders, is defined in relation to the reference software of xvc. The xvc web page includes information about the the one-stop shop license that is available for the xvc codec, and starting from version 2 of xvc there is now also a royalty-free baseline profile available.

The new version of xvc includes several additional improvements, such as support for multi-threaded encoding, and thanks to xvc's extensible bitstream structure and versioning framework, all version 1 bitstreams are fully compatible and decodable by version 2 decoders.

Call for Patents in xvc

Stockholm, Sweden -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/08/2018 -- The software video compression company Divideon is today issuing a formal worldwide Call for Patents in the video codec xvc.

The xvc codec was released in its first version in September 2017. It is a software-defined video codec which includes novel and innovative methods for video compression, capable of delivering compression performance far beyond the video codecs that exist in the market today. The decoding process of xvc has a lightweight design in order to support software decoding across various platforms. An online demo at the Divideon website shows that xvc can even run directly in browsers using a JavaScript decoder.

The xvc codec is constructed with a modular architecture to allow for modifications and improvements to be introduced continuously and seamlessly. The source code of the xvc reference software is publicly available and it is constantly being extended with new features and additional compression tools. The second major version of xvc is expected to be released during 2018.

With this formal Call for Patents, Divideon invites any party that believes it has patents that read on the xvc reference software to contact Divideon regarding licensing the technology.

Patent holders are also requested to express their opinion regarding defining a royalty-free profile of xvc which would serve as a baseline of the full xvc codec.

The commercial license of xvc will be available starting from the second quarter of 2018, and patent holders are encouraged to respond to the Call for Patents in advance of March 31, 2018.

Divideon Introduces xvc – A World-Class Video Codec with a Revolutionary Licensing Model

The new video codec xvc is being released, with source code publicly available at xvc.io. The developers of xvc – Divideon – will be demonstrating real-time xvc software decoding on mobile devices at IBC 2017.

Stockholm, Sweden -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/12/2017 -- The software video compression company Divideon is today introducing a completely new video compression format to the market. The new format, which is a software defined video codec called xvc, is being released with source code publicly available and with a unique one-stop shop license. For internal evaluations and for non-commercial usage, the xvc codec can be used completely free of charge.

With the release of xvc, Divideon is primarily targeting video streaming applications with a need to reduce bandwidth consumption and increase reach in congested networks. The majority of today's video streaming services are based on H.264/AVC, a video codec that has been around since 2003. With the xvc codec, the bit rate can be reduce by more than 50% compared to H.264/AVC with maintained video quality.

Divideon report that the performance of xvc is unprecedented, and that it is able to provide better compression efficiency than alternative codecs such as HEVC and VP9. With the source code publicly available it should be easy enough to verify such claims for different use cases.

Links to the source code and instructions how to use it are available at the xvc web page – xvc.io.

A unique property of the xvc license is the indemnification clause, which offers protection against unreasonable licensing claims and "patent trolls" - phenomena which have held back deployment of other video codecs, such as HEVC. With a flexible software, in which it is easy to disable and replace individual features, Divideon claims that the xvc codec will not be at risk of being blocked by third-party license claims. Features that can not be included with the xvc license will simply be removed from the xvc codec.

Divideon demonstrates the performance of xvc with a real-time demo application, decoding full HD video on mobile devices. The release of xvc is being made during the week of IBC – which is the largest media, entertainment and technology show in Europe – an excellent occasion for introducing revolutionary concepts and demonstrating cutting-edge technology.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Jonatan Samuelsson
Co-founder and CEO
Divideon
Telephone: +46721882169
Email: Click to Email Jonatan Samuelsson
Web: https://www.divideon.com/
