Solar Light Company, LLC Presents a Guide to Polychromatic and Monochromatic DRS for SPF Analysis

Learn about the background, theory, and techniques of HDRS measurement methods for assessing sunscreen product protection.

Glenside, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/21/2022 -- The next generation of gold standard SPF Test and Measurement Solutions from Solar Light Company, LLC is coming! The new gold standard is a result of the proven study which demonstrates that HDRS (ISO/CD 23698) is a rapid, accurate and precise alternative instrumental method of analysis to ISO 24444:2019.

Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy is a technique used in the field of dermatology for assessing optical properties of skin and drugs or topical ingredients applied to the skin. It can measure skin proliferation, photodamage that has occurred to the skin, blood content, and even diagnose certain skin cancers. Evaluation of sunscreen protection on human skin using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was initially limited to the UVA portion of the spectrum, but recently a technique was devised that allows for determination of ultraviolet (UV) protection across the entire solar UV spectrum (290-400nm). This technique named "Hybrid Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy*" (HDRS) provides a fast and simple assessment of sunscreen protection in vivo that could replace extensive sunburning and damaging exposures to human test subjects as currently mandated by regulatory bodies across the globe.

HEV Solar Simulators produce solar radiation in the 400-500nm range, or that portion of the visible light spectrum that is closest to the UV band, which is of vital importance to medical and clinical research applications.

Glenside, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/14/2018 -- Solar Light's new specialty line of HEV Solar Simulators are designed specifically for professional research in the High Energy Visible spectra. These state of the art single output HEV Solar Simulators produce solar radiation in the 400-500nm range, or that portion of the visible light spectrum that is closest to the UV band - mainly violet and blue light rays. In addition to the HEV output, they can be quickly and easily configured by the end user to provide UVA only, UVB only, UVA+B, or full spectrum sunlight optionally. Custom spectra are also available. These units are specifically designed for in vitro and in vivo clinical, medical, and photobiological studies including SPF, oxidative stress, hyperpigmentation, age spots, and melasma. Our LS1000 Models are available with 1000W output, in round or square beam sizes ranging from 5cm to 15.25cm, in compliance with laboratory standards such as ASTM, IEC, and ISO. They come complete with everything required to begin testing immediately, including Solar Simulators, Power Supplies, Automatic Dose Controllers, NIST-Traceable PMA-Series Sensors, safety glasses, and other related accessories.

"We've developed these Simulators in direct response to customer requests. SPF and medical research are moving quickly into HEV, which hasn't yet been studied as thoroughly as traditional UV spectra. Researchers are beginning to understand that HEV can have significant effects on our health and well being, and using these simulators, they will be able to isolate to these specific high energy visible (HEV) wavelengths as required," explained Moshe K. Levy, Solar Light's VP of Marketing and Sales.

Advanced NIST-Traceable Digital Sensors are designed specifically for professional research applications and available in a wide variety of configurations to fit any requirement.

Glenside, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/21/2017 -- Solar Light's versatile NIST-Traceable PMA-Series Digital Sensors represent the pinnacle of accuracy, durability, and selection on the market today. These units measure discrete bands of the electromagnetic spectrum from the UVA, UVB, UVA+B, UVC, Visible Light, and Infrared regions. Both narrow and broad bands are available to fit any application, including germicidal requirements, environmental probes, and sensors for biologically weighted spectra (such as the erythema and CIE action spectra.) Over 135 different sensors are available in a variety of packages to fit any environment, from indoor clean rooms, to harsh locations outdoors, to 100 meters under water. These Digital Sensors work in concert with Solar Light's advanced PMA-Series Radiometers, and are typically used as discrete units in applications where portability is critical. The company also offers Analog versions of these sensors, for users who wish to use their own data loggers, or plan to use a voltage source to provide excitation voltage to the sensor and a digital volt or amp meter to read and convert the results.

"Solar Light's sensors are targeted at the professional research and scientific community, our core customer base. We've designed these sensors to fit any environment, and any application, with a robust construction that will last for decades in daily use," explained Moshe K. Levy, Vice President of Marketing for Solar Light Company, Inc.

Solar Light Company, Inc. Announces New UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) Testing Service

Solar Light Company, Inc.’s new state of the art Ultraviolet Protection Factor Testing Laboratory performs accurate UPF testing for clothing and fabrics to all major worldwide standards: AATCC 183, BS EN 13758-1, GBT18830-2009, and NZS 4399.

Glenside, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/29/2017 -- UPF is a spectral transmission analysis which can quantify exactly how much UV radiation permeates materials. Solar Light Company, Inc.'s new state of the art Ultraviolet Protection Factor Testing Laboratory performs accurate UPF testing for clothing and fabrics to all major worldwide standards: AATCC 183, BS EN 13758-1, GBT18830-2009, and NZS 4399. The UPF Rating Scale is between 15 and 50. For example, a shirt with a UPF rating of 15 means that 1/15th of the sun's UV radiation can reach the wearer's skin, while a shirt with a UPF rating of 50 means that only 1/50th of the sun's UV radiation can reach the wearer's skin. The company can also provide a UPF Certification Report optionally which details the specific measurements of the samples, the equipment used in the testing, and all relevant data points. Typical turnaround is 2-3 days after receipt of samples, and pricing starts at only $250.00 for the first 2 samples.

"UPF ratings are becoming more prevalent in the civilian clothing industry as people seek alternatives to sunscreen lotions, though it should be noted that UPF gauges a fabric's effectiveness against both UVA and UVB light, while sunscreen's SPF number pertains only to a sunscreen's effectiveness against UVB rays (the sunburn-causing segment of the ultraviolet spectrum.) High-risk groups with an elevated need for high UPF-rated clothing include fair skinned, sun-sensitive people, children, and people who spend extended time at high elevation, equatorial regions, and near reflective surfaces such as snow and water. Solar Light makes it easy for garment manufacturers to quickly, efficiently, and accurately test for UPF," explained Moshe K. Levy, Vice-President of Marketing for Solar Light Company, Inc.
