Roaring Penguin currently aggregates this data into four DNS-based block lists:<br />

Spam Source:  A list of IP addresses that have sent mostly spam and very little non-spam.<br />
<br />
Dictionary Attackers:  A list of IP addresses that have sent to many nonexistent recipients and very few valid recipients.<br />
<br />
Greylist Stumblers:  A list of IP addresses that have been thwarted by greylisting.  Such machines are typically compromised personal computers.<br />
<br />
Good:  A list of IP addresses that have passed greylisting, have sent to very few nonexistent recipients, and have sent mostly non-spam.  These machines are very likely legitimate mail servers.<br />
<br />
To these block lists Roaring Penguin has added a new list called "Mixed" for hosts that send a mixture of spam and non-spam.<br />
<br />
Roaring Penguin found that the old "SpamSource" list would often list outbound mail servers for large e?mail providers.  These servers tend to send a lot of spam, but they also send a lot of non-spam e-mail.<br />
<br />
The change to Roaring Penguin&apos;s Reputation Lists means that about 5600 machines formerly listed on  the "SpamSource" list are now listed on "Mixed".  This still leaves almost 1.9 million machines listed on the "SpamSource" e-mail reputation list.<br />

These organizations use various ad hoc methods to collect the reputation data. There is no standard for reporting events to reputation-collectors; this makes it hard to instrument a large number of systems to be data gatherers in a standard way. <br />

Dictionary Attackers: A list of IP addresses that have sent to many nonexistent recipients and very few valid recipients.<br />
Greylist Stumblers: A list of IP addresses that have been thwarted by greylisting.  Such machines are typically compromised personal computers.<br />
Good: A list of IP addresses that have passed greylisting, have sent to very few nonexistent recipients, and have sent mostly non-spam.  These machines are very likely legitimate mail servers.<br />

3. Multiple Hierarchical levels of Administrative Control <br />
CanIt-Domain-PRO permits arbitrary levels of administrative control.  For example, an installation administrator has overall control.  He or she can delegate control over sets of domains to a regional administrator, who in turn can delegate control over some domains to site administrators.  Finally, site administrators can delegate control over individual quarantines and settings to end-users.<br />

The concept of e-mail is almost as old as the Internet.  The first e-mail programs were created for ARPANET in the late sixties / early seventies.  E-mail was created in simpler times when everyone on the network was trustworthy.  Even knowing what we know today with regards to spammers we still tend to take e-mail for granted and trust it far more than it deserves.  This article takes a look at the components of the e-mail system.  After reading it you will understand how e-mail moves on the Internet and how to interpret e-mail message headers.  The Simple Message Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and the Domain Name System (DNS) are covered in detail:<br />

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol and is the protocol used to deliver email on the Internet.  SMTP is quite old; it was first standardized in 1982 in RFC 821.  SMPTP is the most prevalent protocol in e-mail delivery.  It provides no authentication and any aspect of an email message can be spoofed.<br />
<br />
The Domain Name System (DNS) provides a distributed database for converting names to IP addresses.  It uses caching to improve performance.  There are different types of DNS records; two that control mail delivery are the Mail Exchange (MX) and Address (A) records.  The MX record names hosts that will accept mail for a specific domain, and A records provide the IP addresses of named hosts.<br />
