Manuka Honey, Nature's Medicine

Eastport, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/23/2010 -- Manuka Honey from New Zealand has been found in randomized controlled clinical trials to significantly reduce the presence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in wounds.

MRSA continues to dominate global headlines as a formidable hospital-acquired infection, killing thousands of patients each year and becoming a huge burden on healthcare costs. The number of hospital admissions for MRSA has increased rapidly over the last decade, with a 300% increase in 2005 over that of 2000, and a 1000% increase over that of 1995. Conservative estimates suggest a global figure of up to 53 million people infected by this antibiotic-resistant strain. MRSA is resistant to such common antibiotics as methicillin, amoxicillin, penicillin, and oxacillin, and is quick to adapt to new ones. Historically, MRSA has been most common among people with weak immune systems, living in either hospitals or long-term care centers. However, it has been increasingly present in healthy individuals, giving rise to community-acquired MRSA.

Studies showing Manuka Honey's ability to eradicate MRSA have many medical professionals impressed, and even relieved. MRSA, which is now reaching out beyond the walls of hospitals and other healthcare facilities into the general community, claims more lives than AIDS in certain countries. Manuka Honey's ability to eradicate this superbug makes it a truly unique substance in the field of wound care. Retailers have seen steady growth in interest and sales of Manuka Honey products within the past year.

In randomized and controlled clinical trials, Manuka Honey was used on venous leg ulcers that had been proven to be non-healing under standard treatment. In these studies, half the patients had a common advanced wound care gel added to the standard treatment, and half had Manuka Honey added. After four weeks, 70% of the Manuka Honey treated wounds versus only 16% of the hydrogel treated wounds had MRSA eradicated. It has been concluded that for sloughy venous ulcers, the efficacy of Manuka Honey in eliminating MRSA in such wounds is a positive finding that may have implications for wound management and infection control.

Wound care is a major healthcare concern, compounded by several factors, including an aging population. Medical professionals are also predicting an emergence of new antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria in the future. To date, there have been no reports of any infectious bacteria being able to develop a resistance to Manuka Honey. These reports are encouraging and may breath life to new generations of advanced wound care.

What Makes Honeymark Brand Manuka Honey Better Than Others

Eastport, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/21/2010 -- It is important to know what to look for in Manuka Honey in order to take advantage of all its health benefits. Not all Manuka Honey is medicinal!

Manuka Honey is world renowned for its extraordinary healing properties. Due to certain plant-derived components, this unique type of honey contains natural antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties not found in other types of honey. It also contains more vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants than ordinary honey.

Not all Manuka Honey is created equal. Manuka Honey's antibacterial potency varies from batch-to-batch, predicated on the amount of floral nectar used by the honeybees during the production stage. The only way to know for sure if a particular batch of Manuka Honey is active and suitable for therapeutic use is if it's laboratory tested.

Only active, UMF Manuka Honey will yield the same results that people have come to expect of Manuka Honey. UMF is an acronym for Unique Manuka Factor and is usually followed by a number which indicates the antibacterial strength of the honey. UMF is the authorized seal and registered trademark of the Active Manuka Honey Association in New Zealand. This trademark can only be applied to the label of honey with a laboratory test result of UMF 10 or higher.

Only Manuka Honey that is regulated by the Active Manuka Honey Association can bare the UMF trademark. A jar of Manuka Honey that is labeled as being "active" followed by a number does not provide a guarantee that it is as potent as advertised. For example, if the label indicates, "active 10", the number is borrowed from the UMF rating system but because the honey is not regulated by the Active Manuka Honey Association, that particular brand cannot legally use the UMF trademark. Therefore, it is unknown if the honey was laboratory tested for its antibacterial potency.

To be certain of the potency, a jar of Manuka Honey should indicate the UMF trademark and a number of 10 or higher (i.e. UMF 16). It's also important to know that in the U.S., the FDA does not regard honey of any kind as being active. If the label of a jar of Manuka Honey says, "active" it is in violation of FDA regulations.

Honeymark is an importer of Manuka Honey and a manufacturer of natural Manuka Honey skin care products. Honeymark brand Manuka Honey meets the following standards:

1. Regulated by the Active Manuka Honey Association in New Zealand;
2. Laboratory tested for its antibacterial potency;
3. Certified UMF 16+ active, medical-grade;
4. 100% pure, raw and unprocessed;
5. Bottled and labeled in New Zealand.

Honeymark Goes All-Natural

Eastport, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/21/2010 -- The manufacturer of Manuka honey products has taken all synthetic and chemical-based ingredients in their products and replaced them with plant-derived, natural ingredients.

In an effort to keep up with the recent demands of their customers, Honeymark has undergone a major reformulation process, giving their entire line of Manuka Honey products a face lift. Nowadays, consumers are very label savvy and are much more educated about what ingredients are safer and more effective. Even though many of the synthetic or chemical ingredients that have been used in skin care and personal care products over the last few decades are perfectly safe according to the FDA, the consumer preference is all-natural.

The development of skin care products utilizing natural ingredients is no longer a think of the future. It is here in the present and these products are in big demand. Along with many other manufacturers that are jumping on the "clean and green" bandwagon, Honeymark has recognize the importance of producing products that are made from plant-derived materials. Most consumers that are aware of the natural healing properties of Manuka Honey are interested natural remedies, rather than their pharmaceutical equivalents. With the horrifying list of negative side effects that accompany pharmaceutical advertisements, it's no wonder that the natural products movement has hit the retail market so hard.

Manuka Honey is becoming world renowned for its ability to heal, treat and cure a wide variety of health conditions, both internally and externally. Manuka Honey is already recognized as the only natural treatment alternative to antibiotic-resistant infections such as MRSA and VRE. Now some medical professionals have reason to believe that its antiviral properties may even be effective against the Swine Flu (H1N1 virus).

"There is no natural substance on the face of the planet that has more impressive healing qualities than Manuka Honey," says Dr. Vincent Milano, Executive Director of the TriState Medical Center in New York. "Over-the-counter cold medication doesn't work. I always tell my patients to take Manuka Honey instead. I've even seen MRSA Staph infections healed within days after applying Manuka Honey topically to the affected area. In most cases, Manuka Honey outperforms prescription medication for certain health conditions."

Honeymark products include a First Aid Antiseptic Lotion, Acne Cream, Anti-Wrinkle Serum, Hand Sanitizing Gel, Anti-Itch Cream, Anti-Fungal Solution and a variety of other skin care products, all of which contain active Manuka Honey as a natural healing agent. Even though Manuka Honey is indigenous to New Zealand, Honeymark products are manufactured in the U.S. Honeymark is one of the largest importers of Manuka Honey in the U.S. and plans on releasing other Manuka Honey products by next year. Future products include Manuka Honey Lozenges and Manuka Honey Capsules.

"Reformulating our products to include all natural ingredients was a long, over due project that I'm glad we have finally achieved," says Frank Buonanotte, CEO of Honeymark International. "These new botanical ingredients perfectly compliment the natural healing properties of Manuka Honey. We are happy to introduce this amazing natural resource to U.S. consumers and other markets all over the world."
