Beverly Hills Periodontist Discusses Dangerous Mouth Bacteria Capable of Infecting Heart Tissue

Scientists Are Working To Develop A Screening Tool To Detect The Bacteria and Prevent Possibly Life Threatening Heart Problems

Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2012 -- It is widely known that bacteria build-up in the mouth can lead to tooth loss, halitosis and even more severe complications like Periodontal disease, but scientists have recently discovered a protein in bacteria that enable it to enter the bloodstream and infect the heart tissues leading to potentially fatal endocarditis. Microbiologists at the University of Rochester Medical Center have identified the protein, CNM, in Streptococcus mutans and are working to develop a screening protocol to find the microbe before it has the opportunity to cause harm. "Easily performed tests like a mouth swab or spit test can detect the bacteria, " says Dr. Alex Farnoosh, "and identify which patients are vulnerable to the condition. This would allow myself and other dental professionals to take greater care of our patients and prevent potentially lethal heart problems." Usually, S.mutans limits its activity to the mouth but in some cases it can also contain the protein CNM that gives the bacteria the ability to invade heart tissues by entering the bloodstream during a dental procedure or even vigorous flossing that causes the gums to bleed. Once in the bloodstream, a normal immune system usually destroys the bacteria but in rare cases in can travel to the heart and root itself in the heart valves leading to an inflammation of the heart valves also known as endocarditis.

As a specialist and pioneer in many revolutionary cosmetic dental procedures like his lip lowering procedure to tackle a gummy smile and his gum bleaching technique, Beverly Hills Periodontist Dr. Alex Farnoosh is concerned about protecting his patients during these and more advanced procedures. "As a specialist in cosmetic procedures, giving my patients a perfect smile is just as important as maintaining oral health to ensure a lifetime of beautiful smiles, " says Dr. Farnoosh, "being able to screen for such problems allows for dental professionals like myself to be at the frontline in combating the problem."

Scientists at the University's Center for Oral Biology have been making great strides in research and development towards understanding the CNM Protein; recently they have been able to isolate the gene responsible for allowing the bacteria to gain a foothold in the heart tissue. This discovery could be the beginning of new advancements in pre-screening patients for other oral problems associated with bacteria and perhaps even diseases to prevent and detect more complicated issues.

Top Beverly Hills Periodontist Seeks to Raise Awareness About Medication Related Dry Mouth

As The Number Of People Taking Daily Medication Rises Many Deal With The Common Side Effect Of Dry Mouth That Could Impede Their Overall Health

Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/01/2012 -- According to the latest statistics, 90% of adults over the age of 65 take at least one type of prescription medication daily in addition to the nearly half of all Americans in every other age group already on prescription medications. While most may cause relatively mild side effects, many individuals describe dry mouth or "cotton mouth" as a common problem. Though it may not seem like an overly worrisome issue, dry mouth is not only uncomfortable but it can impede a person's ability to taste, swallow, digest and even talk correctly in severe circumstances. Beverly Hills Periodontist Dr. Alex Farnoosh comments, "On average, the normal adult will produce around one and a half liters of saliva daily, it is important to keep our bodies well regulated to ensure a healthy lifestyle and to avoid future problems. I would advise my patients to be vigilant of any side effects that may occur with special attention to dry mouth problems because Xerostomia can lead to other oral complications such as rampant cavities."

Currently, Dr. Alex Farnoosh is joining the efforts of The American Dental Association (ADA), the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and countless other pharmaceutical organizations to raise awareness around medication related dry mouth. More than 500 prescription and over the counter medications can lead to dry mouth problems including many diuretics, decongestants, antidepressants, antihistamines and blood pressure and pain medications. With the number of people on daily medication growing, it is important to raise awareness on this issue to combat the problem early on.

While many may choose to deal with minor to severe dry mouth discomfort for the sake of their daily medicinal needs, there are ways to combat the problem. Dr. Alex Farnoosh recommends, "Speak to your doctor about alternative medications available that may not cause this symptom. If the dry mouth persists, make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Not only is dry mouth irritating, but it can also put your oral health in jeopardy because normal saliva production is essential to cleanse your teeth and gums of bacteria. A buildup of bacteria can lead to more severe dental issues like Periodontal Disease."
Top Beverly Hills Periodontist Discusses Revolutionary New Techniques to Diagnose Diabetes During A Routine Dental Exam

New Technolgies In The Dental Field Have Now Made It Possible For Patients To Be Tested For Pre-Diabeties And Diabetes During A Dental Exam To Help Treat And Battle The Condition As Early As Possible

Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/23/2012 -- According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), diabetes currently affects 25.8 million Americans each year. The startling factor is that many of those cases may in fact be undiagnosed. Early detection of diabetes is key in combating and treating the condition and health professionals in every field are taking great strides in raising awareness. Supported in large part by a grant from Colgate-Palmolive, researchers at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine conducted a study to create and analyze a method to diagnose pre-diabetes and diabetes during a routine dental exam. While the importance of regular dental check-ups is widely known to be essential in ensuring future oral health, these routine visits could be become paramount in securing overall wellness. Beverly Hills Periodontist Dr. Alex Farnoosh states, " Periodontal Disease is dangerous enough but it can also be an early sign of diabetes amongst people who have no idea they even have it. This study is revolutionary in establishing early detection protocols to better serve my patients."

The study gathered 600 participants who were Hispanic or non-white aged 30 years or older and non-Hispanic or white individuals aged 40 years or older who had never been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes. Of those participating in the study, the patients identified at least one additional diabetes risk factor such as diabetes in the family history, high cholesterol levels and obesity. After testing several different tools for identification, researchers established an algorithm comprised of two main dental indicators; number of teeth missing and the "percentage of deep periodontal pockets". These factors combined with a hemoglobin Alc test during the exam were successful in identifying patients with pre-diabetes or diabetes. To test against this method, patients were also given a plasma glucose test which is commonly the method utilized by doctors to detect the disease. Dr. Alex Farnoosh comments, "As a dental professional completely committed to my patients' health, I look forward to performing this early detection system during exams. Not only can I help to protect against more serious oral problems, but this study highlights an additional service I can give to protect my patients from more serious health complications."

As obesity numbers rise in America, diabetes numbers grow exponentially. It is essential to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle to keep diabetes from ever developing. While many individuals may think that regular brushing and flossing is enough, visiting your dentist regularly can also help to maintain a healthy lifestyle as oral problems can be signs of other problems. Dr. Alex Farnoosh recommends seeing your dental professional often, especially if a patient begins to encounter any sort of discomfort like gum and tooth pain, gum sensitivity and other commonly ignored warning signs. "We cannot avoid even the smallest sign of discomfort.", says Dr. Alex Farnoosh, "Though it may turn out to be a small issue, one should never dismiss a problem that may be an early indicator of a more serious complication."
Despite Research on Gum Disease Prevention, Treatment Is Still a Priority

Recent news of a connection between omega-3's and gum disease is causing Dr. Alex Farnoosh to emphasize gum disease prevention with proper dental care and effective treatment for his Los Angeles area patients.

Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/17/2011 -- In spite of encouraging news about a link between gum disease prevention and the intake of omega 3's that was published recently in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Dr. Alex Farnoosh (says the priority at his practice remains gum disease treatment. Dr. Farnoosh is passionate about the science of dental care. As a cosmetic dentist and periodontist, his focus is on improving aesthetics and protecting health.

"Even though new strategies like increasing omega-3 intake are encouraging, we haven't found a way to prevent gum disease completely," says Dr. Farnoosh. "The reality today is that the majority of my patients have some form of gum disease and they need treatment. That's why I continue to refine techniques for gum surgery and laser dentistry."

The consequences of gum disease are far-reaching. In fact, periodontal disease is a risk factor for many diseases and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, heart disease, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, and even pancreatic cancer. Given these significant consequences, early treatment of gum disease is imperative.

"I treat gum disease in several ways," says Dr. Farnoosh. "I generally like to use an advanced laser technique to remove diseased, infected tissue and reduce bacteria. This method limits discomfort, bleeding, and recovery time. However, I may use flap surgery and tissue grafting surgery for patients with more severe or advanced periodontal disease. I work with each patient to find a solution that fits their needs."

Dr. Farnoosh also shares things patients can do themselves to help minimize the risk of gum disease. Most importantly, he says, they should be diligent about their oral hygiene. That includes thorough twice-daily brushing and flossing, as well as routine cleaning and check-ups. People should also avoid smoking and eat a healthy diet – as he points out, these things are important for overall health, not just periodontal health.

"In addition to caring for their teeth and gums, people should be looking carefully for the signs of gum disease," Dr. Farnoosh says. "It is often asymptomatic, but there are usually indications. For example, if patients have red, swollen, and tender gums; gums that bleed; gums that have pulled away from teeth; and persistent bad breath; they may need to visit their dentist. Even if they do not have gum disease, these symptoms could indicate another problem."

Dr. Farnoosh is a renowned leader and innovator in the field of cosmetic dentistry. Men and women from all over the world visit his practice for quality care and impressive results. Some of his more popular procedures include lip lowering for a gummy smile, dental implants, gum bleaching, tooth whitening, gum contouring, as well as gum and bone grafting.

"My approach to dentistry is multi-faceted," explains Dr. Farnoosh. "I don't think you can discuss treatment without prevention. Similarly, I don't think you can improve aesthetics without improving function. I talk a great deal about 'the total smile.' It's a concept that is truly at the heart of my practice. I address the entire mouth for a smile that is healthy and vibrant."

Treatment for Dark Gums Now Accomplished in Less Than One Hour

Good news for men and women with dark gums: a Los Angeles cosmetic dentist has developed a gum bleaching technique that takes less than an hour. Even better, the results are long-lasting.

Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/15/2010 -- Esteemed Beverly Hills periodontist and cosmetic dentist Dr. Alex Farnoosh created a treatment for bleaching dark gums that is more effective than past laser methods.

The technique is proven to instantly remedy pigmented and discolored gums with results that last for several years.

Healthy gums are generally pink and uniform in color, although this can vary from person to person. When melanin – a pigment responsible for skin tone and hair color – accumulates in the gums, they can discolor and darken. Certain physical conditions, smoking, and some prescription drugs can also contribute. Some people are hale and hearty yet still experience discoloration. Those living with dark gums are often self-conscious and unaware that a solution is within reach.

"I read about Dr. Farnoosh on the Internet and requested a consultation. Within a week I was in Los Angeles," says Farah T., one of Dr. Farnoosh's many out-of-state patients. "I know it sounds cheesy – but in just a few short hours, all of my insecurities melted away and I have the smile I have always dreamed of. I cannot believe I waited so long to do something that was so life-altering and so simple."

Dr. Farnoosh is at the forefront of periodontal cosmetic dentistry. From gum bleaching and gum grafting surgery to treating gum recession and lip lowering for gummy smile correction, Dr. Farnoosh has a solution to your medical or aesthetic problems. Dr. Farnoosh is an academic professor, board-certified periodontist and dental surgeon, and has been published in over 40 scientific publications, including the Journal of Periodontology and Journal of Pathology.

"I have been treating three important elements which make an attractive smile – gums, teeth and lips –for over 25 years," says Dr. Farnoosh. "Most of my patients with dark gums are treated in under an hour and gum pigmentation does not return, even after many years."

The social, psychological, and physical benefits of healthy gums, teeth, and a beautiful smile are immeasurable. Patients feel more attractive, confident and at ease in social settings.
Beverly Hills Periodontist Discusses Innovation in Bone Regeneration and Grafting for Dental Implants

Dr. Alex Farnoosh On Forefront Of Bone Grafting Technology For Reliable Bone Regeneration And Bone Grafting In Periodontal And Implant Surgery

Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/22/2010 -- It is often difficult to use dental implants on patients who have insufficient amount of jaw bone, which is caused by missing teeth, periodontal disease, and other problems. Fortunately, bone grafting supplements a patient's bone and allow implants to be placed for proper function and aesthetic. Various bone grafting materials currently exist as treatment options to effectively anchor an implant. Traditional materials include bovine mineral, human cadaveric bone and autogenous bone.

Autogenous bone is often an attractive option, however, some patients may not wish to have an additional surgery to harvest bone from another site on his or her body such as the chin, angle of the lower jaw or hip.

Recently, however, the FDA has approved use of Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 (BMP-2), a genetically made protein that has the ability to grow bone from a patient's own cells, for bone grafting. BMP-2 material can be used to prevent loss of jaw bone experienced after tooth removal and regenerate bone for dental implants and for sinus and ridge augmentation. Clinical results demonstrate Infuse is superior to standard methods (bovine, cadaver, ceramic, etc.) and is, in fact, the most reliable bone grafting material available.

Beverly Hills periodontist Dr. Alex Farnoosh recognizes the value of BMP-2 and utilizes it in his oral and implant surgeries. "BMP-2 is the future of dental and implant surgery," says Dr. Farnoosh, "Because an inadequate amount of jaw bone is no longer an inhibiting factor, restoring dentition and oral health to my patients is faster and more effective than ever."

Dr. Farnoosh is at the forefront of the BMP-2 movement and uses Infuse for bone grafts, ridge and sinus augmentation which restores the natural contour of the gums and jaw bone, which often recede after tooth loss and periodontal disease.

An Innovative Solution to Improve Gummy Smiles By Los Angeles Cosmetic Dentist

Dr. Farnoosh’s Actual Gummy Smile Patients Address Common Concerns

Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/09/2010 -- Smiling is something we do every day, but seldom think about. It is an important and powerful part of communication – a universal sign of happiness. But for many people with a "gummy smile" – a high lip line in which an excessive amount of gum tissue above the teeth is shown – smiling can be a source of anxiety or even shame. Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist and periodontist Dr. Alex Farnoosh developed an innovative solution to correct a high lip line and restore confidence to his patients.

"Most people who seek my lip lowering procedure are apprehensive, hopeless and scared, because they either think there is no solution or they have been told and read about the very invasive jaw surgery to correct their gummy smile," says Dr. Farnoosh. "It is my goal to instill confidence in every patient, and my results speak for themselves time and time again."

For many tormented by a "gummy smile", a solution seems too good to be true. Sometimes, before and after photos simply aren't enough and questions remain. Below are three actual unsolicited testimonials from Dr. Farnoosh's patients who underwent treatment in 2009:

"I always hated my gummy smile, but now I smile confidently and I cannot be happier! I had the lip lowering procedure done. It has been about 15 weeks since my surgery, and I can still feel a tiny bit of tightness. The healing process takes time but is not painful or bothersome. Very few people even noticed I had the surgery. There was no major discomfort and I could do all of my daily functions after surgery. This is especially important because I was able to keep the surgery a secret. I highly recommend the surgery to anyone seeking a solution to a 'gummy smile."

"Before I had the surgery, I was concerned that my upper lip would look longer or my face would look different but the surgery had no negative effects on the appearance of my face or my upper lip. In fact, my upper lip looks fuller, nicer and shows less gum after surgery. I love my smile now and I wish I had the procedure done earlier."

"I came from Ireland to have the lip lowering done because I suffered for almost 20 years and I was afraid of having jaw surgery to correct my "gummy smile." I hated my gummy smile. I flew to LA and had a consultation to have lip lowering done on a Thursday afternoon and had the surgery done on a Friday morning and went back to Ireland on Monday. It is the best thing I have ever, ever done! It is like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I am so glad that there is someone of your skill helping people. It has not only changed my life but also everything around me in a small way as I feel more content. My parents are just so happy for me."

Beverly Hills Gum Specialist Dr. Alex Farnoosh: Suprising New Link Between Tooth Loss And Cognitive

Routine periodontal & dental care by Dr. Farnoosh can help keep teeth and cognition intact

Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/06/2010 -- Medical findings strongly suggest gum disease affects intelligence, with a low tooth count predicting poor performance on cognitive tests. The link between periodontal disease and overall health has been long established – oral inflammation introduces inflammation into the blood, increasing risk for other health issues. The shocking connection between tooth loss and cognitive decline has only recently been demonstrated so clearly.

A breakthrough study published in May in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society draws attention to the importance of oral hygiene. Researchers at Boston University's School of Dental Medicine examined dental records of 600 men for up to 32 years and found that the risk of poor performance on cognitive exams increases between 8% and 10% with each tooth lost per decade. Even those with cavities performed worse than those with none. Participants with no tooth loss consistently performed better. The researchers believe that inflammation may be a possible cause, noting that other studies found higher levels of inflammation markers in people with Alzheimer's disease. "Periodontal disease and cavities are infectious diseases that introduce inflammatory proteins into the blood. There's a lot of evidence that inflammation raises your risk of cognitive decline and it could be that gum inflammation is one of the sources", say the researchers.

Another recent study by the University of Kentucky searched for a connection between tooth loss and Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Using a Delayed Word Recall test, which assesses memory, researchers established that participants who did not lose teeth over the span of three years averaged significantly higher recall than those who experienced tooth loss during those years. This study, published in the Journal of Dental Research, adds to the evidence that there is a significant relationship between oral hygiene and cognitive capabilities. "The connection between having a low number of teeth and poor memory highlights the need to take preventative action against gum disease and tooth decay," says Dr. Farnoosh. "Regular oral exams are imperative not only for oral health, but for overall health and well being.

Dr. Farnoosh, founder of The Total Smile, has specialized in gum disease for over 25 years and recommends a preventative strategy via regular checkups.
Beverly Hills Periodontist Dr. Alex Farnoosh: Discusses New Link Between Gum Disease and Stillbirth

ROUTINE GUM CARE CAN HELP PREVENT ORAL INFECTIONS FROM COMPLICATING FETAL HEALTH

Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/07/2010 -- For some time medical findings have suggested oral disease during pregnancy can affect fetal health, increasing the likelihood of premature birth and low birth weight in humans. The link between oral disease and systemic conditions is not a novel idea. Many chronic inflammatory diseases such as diabetes, heart and Alzheimer's disease, and many other conditions are consistently connected to periodontal disease. This has been supported through various studies and is widely accepted throughout the medial community. Only recently has the link between periodontal disease and stillbirths in humans been observed.

Up to 75% of all women experience pregnancy-related gingivitis due to changes in hormones. Previous research linked oral bacteria to rodent stillborn births and to human pre-term births; however, the connection to stillbirths in humans had yet to be seen until now. The first-ever documented case of oral bacteria actually causing a full-term human stillbirth occurred early this year in Santa Monica, California. Researchers identified Fuscobacterium nucleatum as the culprit. This bacterium was found in the mother's oral plaque samples and the stillborn's lungs and stomach, but not in the mother's birth canal. This groundbreaking discovery suggests the bacterium was transmitted from the mother's mouth through the blood to the fetus, and the fetus died because of the bacterial infection and inflammation.

The transmission of bacteria from the mother's mouth to the fetus, and its potentially dangerous consequences, is certainly alarming. This new link between oral bacteria and stillbirths in humans highlights the need for first-rate preventative dental care, especially during pregnancy. Beverly Hills gum disease specialist Dr. Alex Farnoosh has seen a dramatic increase in inquiries from existing patients and newly pregnant patients who want to make certain they are doing everything they can to protect their unborn child.

"This budding research makes the prevention and treatment of gum disease more important than ever," says Dr. Farnoosh. "If you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, you should be especially vigilant of any gum bleeding and alert your doctor. Expectant mom's can greatly reduce their risk of stillbirth and pre-term labor by regularly seeing a periodontist."

Dr. Farnoosh, founder of The Total Smile, has treated gum disease for over 25 years and recognizes that most patients are unaware of their gum contagion. He recommends a preventative strategy via regular checkups.
