This Little Card Saves Lives

Sometimes a family or child may feel they have nowhere to turn when faced with a serious issue. The American Society for the Positive Care of Children is doing their best to solve this problem with an enthusiastic campaign to raise awareness of the vast number of free resources available.

Carlsbad, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/08/2018 -- The American Society for the Positive Care of Children (ASPCC) is a non-profit organization working to prevent child abuse through positive parenting advocacy and education. To this end, they have created a simple, smart resource to help children and families know where to find help when they need it.

The ASPCC's This Little Card (TLC) Saves Lives campaign provides printed pocket resource cards that include top national hotlines for a variety of needs. These life-saving cards are distributed to law enforcement professionals, counselors, teachers, social workers, and nurses to share with families or children in need.

"We feel it is important to provide a printed card because those who need it most may not have reliable online access during a time of crisis," says Tina McMechen, Acting Executive Director of the ASPCC, who recently delivered TLC cards to staff at Jonesboro Public Schools in Jonesboro, AR. Lindi Wade, Behavior Health Specialist for the District, says she believes the cards are a necessary and valuable intervention, "The information shared on this card allows individuals to have agency resources immediately available. This will be a benefit to the comprehensive care of all of the children we serve."

The ASPCC is encouraging Americans to "Spread some TLC" and help them to reach their goal of circulating 1,000,000 cards in 2019. The cards will be sent at no cost to all organizations committed to distributing them to children and families in need. The TLC cards can also provide a low-cost, high-impact advertising opportunity for potential corporate or organizational sponsors. The American SPCC is currently involved in a pilot program with 15 organizations from across the country to help make data-driven decisions regarding future card design.

"These little pocket cards have the potential to make a tremendous positive impact," says McMechen, "We want them to be a physical reminder that people don't have to live alone on an island of suffering. We want to encourage people to find the strength to leverage the resources that are freely available."
Zero Tolerance Immigration Policy – Separating Immigrant Children Is Child Abuse with Troubling Consequences

Carlsbad, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/19/2018 -- Lietta Ryan, Executive Director of American Society for the Positive Care of Children (American SPCC) announced that the organization is joining other child authorities to say the treatment of immigrant children under the White House's Zero Tolerance Immigration Policy is completely unacceptable. It's child abuse.

"Children are children, no matter where they are from," said Ryan. "How could a civilized nation like America hold such blatant disregard for the moral and ethical treatment of children? These are kids, not criminals. As a mother, I'm heartbroken for the pure terror these kids must be feeling! We must reunite these children before the damage is irreversible."

The Zero Tolerance Policy is being condemned by individuals and organizations that include the United Nations, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, First Lady Melania Trump, and former First Ladies Rosalynn Carter, Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.

It's well-documented that separating children from their families is traumatic, abusive, and has short- and long-term effects. It exposes youngsters to the potentially devastating effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The longer children are separated, the greater the risk of developing lifelong physical and mental issues encompassing alcoholism, depression and suicide, eating disorders, lower academic achievement, high-risk sexual behaviors, and impaired social and economic success.

All children have the right to be nurtured, protected, and treated with dignity and respect. As the recognized super power, the U.S. has a responsibility to lead the way in ethical and moral treatment of all people, especially the world's most vulnerable individuals – children. The White House's Zero Tolerance Policy is government-sanctioned child abuse.

"This isn't about politics," said Ryan. "This is a human rights issue. We need our lawmakers to do what's right for these children. The Zero Tolerance Policy should be zero-tolerance on child abuse, not causing trauma and devastation by not separating children from families. Your voice matters! We all need to speak up on behalf of these kids. To end this, we urge everyone to call their senators and Congress members at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected with their individual lawmaker's office."

The U.S. is facing a moral and ethical crisis of epic proportions with the implementation of the Zero Tolerance Immigration Policy and the way it's addressed will set the tone for future society. The American SPCC is committed to protecting youngsters from physical, emotional and mental harm – even if that includes protecting them from harmful policies.

American SPCC Applauds Oprah's Life-Changing Approach to Child Abuse

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

Carlsbad, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/06/2018 -- April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and American Society for the Positive Care of Children (American SPCC) believes it's imperative that people understand the signs of child abuse and the long-lasting scars on the psyche that it engenders. American SPCC has long understood that what happens to kids during childhood shapes who they become as adults. The organization applauds Ms. Winfrey for speaking up about this life-changing approach.

"Abuse can result in a multitude of ill-effects that others find difficult to understand," said Lietta Ryan, American SPCC executive director. "As Oprah indicated during her 60 Minutes interview, instead of asking children what's wrong with them, we should be asking what happened to them, and encouraging everyone to nurture and protect our children to stop abuse in its tracks."

Child abuse in the U.S. has reached epidemic proportions. 4.1 million child abuse cases reported involving 7.4 million children.* On average, 5 children die unnecessarily every day from child abuse and neglect.* This is unacceptable and preventable. #ItsTime for change.

*2016 Child Maltreatment Report (pub Jan 2018)

Child abuse is defined as any intentional harm or mistreatment to a child under the age of 18. Abuse encompasses many forms including neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, along with medical abuse in which a child is ill and fail to seek medical attention.

Changes in a child's typical behavior such as withdrawal, defiance or rebelliousness may be an indicator. Children may be reluctant to leave school or return home, run away or attempt suicide. Children may also exhibit poor hygiene or lack of clothing, weight loss, eating excessively or hoarding food. In reality, children are often using the only coping mechanisms they may have to survive in intolerable conditions and circumstances.

The signs of abuse aren't always obvious. Abused children may feel ashamed, guilty and confused. They often feel it's their fault and are afraid to say anything. Abuse is everyone's business. If a child is in danger of being harmed, it is essential that we speak up and report it. It may save a child's life.

As part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the non-profit American SPCC is working to inform and educate the public about child abuse and to know how to identify the signs. When children can't speak for themselves, it's up to the adults in their life to advocate for them. The American SPCC is helping to disrupt the paradigm that something is wrong with the child and asks instead, "What is happening in a child's life?

American SPCC: It's Time to End Child Marriage in the U.S.

Bill SB 48 to limit 'child brides' in Kentucky advances.

Carlsbad, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/08/2018 -- Child marriages don't just occur in third-world countries. Approximately 200,000 children in the U.S. – primarily female – were married to adults between 2000 and 2015. The American Society for the Positive Care of Children (American SPCC) is working to increase awareness of the problem and end the victimization of children in America by child marriages.

"It is so difficult to believe that in 2018, we are even having this conversation," said Lietta Ryan, American SPCC executive director. "If an adult has sexual relations with a child, they are most definitely a pedophile. How does marrying a child change that? It doesn't! They are still a predator and child abuser. We owe it to our kids to speak up. They need us more than ever."

States attempting to address the issue often encounter opposition from other lawmakers and lobbying groups in the guise of protecting parental rights, effectively allowing the victimization of children to continue. This recently happened in Kentucky when a conservative group stalled the passing of bill SB 48 (outlaw child marriage). Following public outrage and a social media storm, the bill was revised, finally winning approval with a 34-3 vote.
More Background: Bill to limit 'child brides' in Kentucky advances, but 3 senators don't hold their peace.

In the U.S., it's legal in some states for girls age 12-13 to marry and the age for boys is 14-15. Twenty-five states don't set any age limit. Children at this age are cognitively incapable of making such important life decisions. In some areas of the nation, children are pushed into an unwanted marriage if the child becomes pregnant, to lessen economic hardship, family shame, or to accommodate cultural customs.

All of America's children deserve to be protected and feel safe no matter whether they are, especially at home or school. The U.S. is a superpower and the foremost advocate for human rights around the globe, yet it's the only United Nations country that has NOT ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child, an international treaty designed specifically to protect children.

"Allowing adults to marry children is morally wrong and it is clearly a violation of children's rights," said Ryan. "Why isn't our government protecting our children, and why, as a country, are we not enraged by this? It's time to let our legislators know that child marriage is unacceptable and children's rights matter."

American SPCC believes that as an educated nation, we have a responsibility to protect our country's children. It's time for change. Adults have an obligation to speak up and advocate for kids or this preventable abuse with continue.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Lietta Ryan
Executive Director
American SPCC
Telephone: 760-230-8140
Email: Click to Email Lietta Ryan
Web: https://americanspcc.org/

American SPCC Expands Its Focus to Ending School Violence

Carlsbad, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/28/2018 -- Survivors of the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida are standing up for students nationwide. Lietta Ryan, executive director of American Society for the Positive Care of Children (American SPCC) announced that the organization is standing in solidarity with those students as the nation's voice for children.

"We hear you! Kids are being raised in a chaotic world, exposed to abuse, neglect and injustice. They don't feel safe and protected. They need our help like never before," said Ryan.

American SPCC is a force for social change, dedicated to reducing the number of victims from violence and abuse and enhancing child safety in schools. The organization works to increase adult and community involvement to safeguard children from bullying and cyber bullying, depression and suicide, and emotional, physical and sexual abuse. It's now expanding its focus to include other types of violence and supports #enoughisenough.

Survivors of the Florida shooting are demanding safety, calling for stricter gun laws and have even met with the President. Today's youth face danger from multiple sources. The American SPCC is giving a voice to those who have been overlooked for way too long and believes children should be heard.

"We must come together for the common good of children," said Ryan. "When we nurture and protect our kids, we prepare them to live happy, healthy and productive lives. Kids can't hire attorneys and they can't hire lobbyists. They need adults to speak up for them. If change doesn't happen, what kind of future will they have?"

American SPCC provides a voice for the voiceless, works to improve the lives of children, and make a social impact, relying on the donations and contributions of the public. The organization is committed to reducing the number of victims from violence and abuse, eliminating the stigma of mental health issues, and encourages individuals to share their survival stories online to help, encourage and inspire others.

"With an organization for almost every special interest group, how can we possibly hear the whispers of the quietest voices among us – the children," asked Ryan. "Let's make sure that each generation has a better chance at a brighter future than the one before it."

American SPCC noted that individuals can help by supporting #ChildrenMatter and participating in the "March For Our Lives" that will take place in Washington, D.C. on March 24, 2018. The call to action is just one of the ways that the organization is expanding its focus to end violence in schools and give children a voice.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Lietta Ryan
Executive Director
American SPCC
Telephone: 760-230-8140
Email: Click to Email Lietta Ryan
Web: https://americanspcc.org/
