Book on Essentials of Leadership :Ethics and Spirituality Published by SMS Varanasi

This book is compiled and edited by Mr Sandeep Singh, Reader and Coordinator Center for Spiritualism and Human Enrichment .Mahatama Gandhi had once said that the purpose of development is to make things simpler.

Varanasi, U.P -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/24/2010 -- Book on Essentials of Leadership :Ethics and Spirituality Published by SMS Varanasi

Book on Essentials of Leadership: Ethics and Spirituality Published by SMS Varanasi . This book is compiled and edited by Mr Sandeep Singh, Reader and Coordinator Center for Spiritualism and Human Enrichment .Mahatama Gandhi had once said that the purpose of development is to make things simpler. But what we observe in present world is that despite of the so called developments in science and technology things have become more complex at least from the point of view of harmony, humanity, trust, love, and human relationships. Today, the society is probably more fragmented and divided than it ever was in the history of mankind. Mutual trust and harmony has almost vanished and people have started seeking business even in human relationships. Last few decades have belonged to dominance of business. No other field, profession, or activity comes even closer to business when it comes to dominating the present world scene. And when we peep into the business world we find that money stands ahead of humanity. This makes the scene disturbing. The epidemic of corporate scams, frauds, and scandals is spreading unabated. The society, every now and then, witness unethical activities committed by large business organizations doing lot of damage to common people, investors, employees, and environment. The relevant questions that comes to mind are that why things are becoming complex, why there is crisis of humanity in world society, why so many large business corporations are getting themselves involved in unethical practices, why common man is losing hope, why everybody wants to dominate others, and what can be the solution for the evils that is prevailing in the world society. For the answers, if we look closely at the happenings of last few decades, we get compelled to focus on leadership

In all probability it is leadership that has failed and the biggest crisis that this world is facing today is that of leadership crisis. The leaders, whether business or political, have failed to provide a better world. The corporate scandals that we have seen are basically the result of misdeeds of leaders who were at the helm of affairs. When we look at political leaders of today we find that there is hardly any leader who has a genuine agenda for making this world a better place to live in. These leaders are limited to selfish agenda seeking personal benefits, or some other minor agenda limited to a nation, group of nation, or a small community. Western leader's talk extensively of globalization but their mindsets are still limited to economic globalization because that is in their benefit. We don't find a humanitarian global mindset of leaders in present times and that is the reason that this world despite of so many material developments is facing the crises of ethics, values, and humanity.

Business leaders of modern times have no doubt demonstrated great abilities when it comes to skills, framing of organizational systems and structures, and developing business strategies. But when it comes to ethics and values, most people will agree that in this aspect modern world business leaders have failed miserably. The root cause of leadership failure in recent times is that ethics, values, and humanity were subsided for materialistic objectives.

This book focuses on two essential components of leadership which are also inter-related and these two components are spirituality and ethics. The lacking aspect of modern leadership has been the focus of this book. In this book an attempt has been made to emphasize that leader apart from the necessary skills that are required for the leadership position must also cultivate and acquire spiritual and ethical attributes in him. Both skills and spiritual and ethical attributes are necessary for effective leadership. When spirituality and ethics gets missing in leadership then it takes the form of destructive leadership. These two essential components whenever gets missing in leadership then this history is evident that it causes huge damage to the society. This book tries to highlight a fact that spirituality and ethics are not detrimental to business objectives instead they are highly beneficial not only to the organizations but also to the leader himself.

This book seeks to contribute to a vision for leadership based on spirituality and ethics. The objective is not to create another 'Utopia', to illustrate a new theory of perfection. Instead an essential application of spirituality and ethics is emphasized for leadership in business where success is normally determined by margins of profit and where ethics is largely confined to the periphery or beyond.

In nutshell it could be said that this book is a small but unique effort to highlight and bring to the fore front the spiritual and ethical dimensions which are the essential elements for any type of leadership. The missing elements of modern leadership are being presented in this book as a paradigm for overcoming the shortcomings of leadership in present times. The root cause of the damage that has taken place and the expected damage that could take place in the future lies in the neglection of spirituality and ethics in the leaders. This book is a sincere effort to make the modern leaders realize this fact and to provide them an insight that if followed could make them a better leader in the future.

Business India B-School Survey 2010

Varanasi, U.P -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/27/2010 -- SMS gets high rating amidst consistent record of 'A-plus Business School' for tenth consecutive year; highest Placement package in the segment

l Top-99 category includes only 20 from North India of which 16 lie in NCR
l Around 300 institutions ranked this year
l SMS placed amongst top-most 7 institutions in Uttar Pradesh
l SMS amongst top-most 52 in Northern belt from Jammu to Kolkata
l SMS has highest intake of 300 in PGDM and highest average salary of Rs. 5.2 lakhs per annum in UP amongst A+ category institutions

VARANASI
In India's oldest Business school survey (of Business India), this year too the prestigious B-School of the region, School of Management Sciences (SMS), Varanasi (established in 1995) has been awarded 'A-plus' ranking for the tenth time in a row amongst an ever expanding base of such Business Schools in India. From the previous year, there has been an over 50 per cent increase in the number of B-Schools being awarded a rank, yet, SMS has been able to keep its flag flying high which is indicative of its inherent strength which has been instrumental in making the Institution grow with an intake of 300 seats (highest in UP) and an average package of Rs. 5.2 lakhs per annum going to the placed students of the last batch of the various PGDM programmes.

The Survey also indicates many startling facts, representation from North India is minimal (about only 20 %) and 80% of them fall in the National Capital Region (NCR). This is against the backdrop of the fact that Uttar Pradesh commands in the number of such technical institutions all over the country and only seven could make it to the top most, SMS being one of them. The Northern belt from Jammu to Kolkata has seen only one-third (33%) contributing to the top-category of such B-schools, according to the Survey published in the latest issue of Business India dated October 17, 2010.

According to this Survey SMS ranks itself along with well established and old institutions. Commenting on the Survey, the Director Prof. P. N. Jha said that "today ranks are diminishing in the din of B-School boom in the country, specially pockets like the NCR, Bangalore, Pune, western UP, to name a few; what is important today is the value-addition which an institution provides to the student and I am happy that we are able to deliver such thing in variety of ways to all our stake holders amongst which our dear students are of prime concern to us. We provide value based learning through excellent infrastructure (40-plus core faculty, separate Air-conditioned PGDM block, 25000-plus books in fully automated library, 7 computer centres with over 400 terminals and wi-fi, free laptop to all PGDM students), international tie-up and academic exchange for PGDM students with Claflin University, USA, industry tie-ups for training and final placement, sporting activities and values education through the Centre for Spirituality and Human Enrichment. The soaring placement package too speaks about the efforts which our team is committed to."

Workshop on Soft Skills; Lecture Series at SMS Concluded

Varanasi, U.P -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/10/2010 -- The first of the Guest Lecture Series at School of Management Sciences (SMS), Varanasi concluded on a 'soft skill' note with the speaker, Prof. Pramod Pathak (Former Head, Department of Management Studies, Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad) commenting that the 'zone of acceptance' of human beings is fast shrinking in today's modern world which is creating social and hence, organizational disorders incongruent to the corporate needs. He was speaking on the occasion of a workshop organized on "Managing HR through Soft skills" for the final year PGDM students.

He highlighted the three eras of Human Resource Management depicting handling people, managing people and understanding people, of which, the third or the present era happens to be the most and ever challenging one. He reiterated students to learn how to take people whom to work with, into confidence. In fact, we have to revisit our core, he added while talking about the 'morality quotient' (also popular as the spiritual quotient). He said, emotional quotient works when morality quotient works and intelligence quotient works when both work. Today, organizations have to move from system centric approach to people-centric approach.

He stressed on the importance of 'soft skills' because of psychological compulsions, political realities and managerial requirements. The basic issues which needed a brawny address today include motivation, changing work-place, effort-potential gap and shrinking zone of acceptance (which makes acceptability of various things narrow). Later Prof. Pathak talked about the A, B, C, D, E of Competitive Edge through soft skills (A-Attitude, B-Behaviour, C-Commitment, D-Dedication, E-Efforts).

In the earlier discourses by eminent speakers over the past week, Shri BB Hooja (Former Executive Engineer, Delhi Vidyut Board), Shri Salil Chopra (Ex CEO, Jaquar), Dr. B. R. Singh (Ex Director, Ispat Group) and Shri Hemant Kumar (Director-HR, PT Indo Rama) interacted with PGDM and MCA students on various facets related to life at Corporate sector. The speakers emphasized on spiritual growth and conversion of stress into creative positive energy. The right attitude needs to be created to achieve winning proposition, they said.

The Director of SMS, Prof. P. N. Jha felicitated the visiting Dignitaries by presenting memento of Lord Vishwanath. On the occasion, the Registrar Shri Sanjay Gupta and faculty members were also present. The next series of Guest Lectures would commence next month, according to Institute sources.

Exchange Students from School of Management Sciences India Express Great Fondness for Claflin University

Varanasi, U.P -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/05/2010 -- Students from School of Management Sciences, Varanasi, India are discovering the rich intellectual heritage at Claflin University this summer because of a newly formed exchange program between the University's School of Business and India's School of Management Sciences.

"As a whole, we are learning so much from the academic environment here at Claflin," said Mr. Upendra Pandey, who is an aspiring export/import trader.

Along with three other SMS students, Mr. Pandey is taking summer courses in the Claflin School of Business' Master of Business Administration Program. In addition, the students are serving internships at two Orangeburg businesses, Southern Patio and Courtesy Management.

This past March, School of Business Dean Dr. Harpal Grewal visited the SMS campus, met with the faculty there and gave a presentation to students. Dr. Grewal said a group of Claflin business students will spend the 2011 spring semester at SMS as part of the exchange program.

He is confident the newly formed international exchange program will provide excellent opportunities for students at both institutions. Dr. Grewal hopes the program will eventually expand to include faculty.

"It is creating international experience and exposure for students," Dr. Grewal said.

For SMS graduate student Mr. Aditya, Claflin has been a welcoming place that has expanded his worldview. He spoke with great admiration about the faculty and how much he enjoyed the study groups.

"We feel at home here," he said. "I am really excited to be at Claflin."

Mr. Aditya's goal is own a successful restaurant franchise. To that end, Mr. Aditya is obtaining some practical experience in owning and operating a hospitality franchise from Mrs. Hema Patel, owner of Courtesy Management; which manages a portfolio of hotel properties in the Midlands.

"It has been positive. I was quite happy with their attitudes and enthusiasm," Mrs. Patel said.

She said Mr. Aditya and Mr. Abhinau Tripathi, another SMS exchange student, have already learned various aspects of the hospitality industry from working at the front desk to accounting.

This newest exchange program adds to many opportunities students in the School of Business have to study abroad. The School has exchange programs with universities in Delhi, India, Kenya and Ireland. In addition, business students can study internationally in London, Tokyo and Shanghai.

"With business becoming increasingly global, it is vital for our students to gain experience internationally," Dr. Grewal said. "These exchange programs are allowing our students to not only meet but exceed the challenges of the 21st century."

SMS is located in Varanasi, India, which is a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh located in the Northeastern portion of that country. Established in 1995, the institution is known for its innovative management and computer science programs.

What most attracted Mr. Mudit Nemani about Claflin was the diversity and warmness of the Claflin student body. He was amazed at the number of states and nations represented at the University. Currently, Claflin has 45 international students from 16 different countries.

Mr. Nenami also appreciated that working professionals seeking a Master of Business Administration degree at Claflin are graciously willing to share their different experiences.

"I'm not even missing back home," said Mr. Aditya.

The four men singled out the special hospitality and support they received from Dr. Grewal, Academic Computing Coordinator Dr. Kumkum Singh and Vice President for Planning, Assessment and Information Services Dr. Zia Hasan.

"We are very thankful to them. We are all thankful for Claflin University," said Mr. Pandey, who indicated he would like to return to the University one day to support its mission.

Besides the exchange programs in Delhi and Varanasi, Claflin is no stranger to India.

In July 2006, four faculty members from Claflin, including Dr. Grewal, visited India to train field workers so they could instruct the public on how to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. It was all part of a federally funded initiative called the Curriculum Development for the Culturally-Sensitive HIV/AIDS Reduction and Intervention Training Project, which was led by S.C. Center for Biotechnology Director Dr. Omar Bagasra. As part of the project, Claflin faculty developed a three premise training model to educate the public on preventing the disease.

Indian Scientist Duo Design Compressed Air Powered Bike Engine

Varanasi, U.P -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/14/2010 -- Indian Scientist duo design compressed air powered bike engine. This was the news published in the news daily DNA which is published in India.

Two Indian Scientists have broken new ground by conceptually designing a new ,cleaner motorcycle engine which is powered by compressed air. The engine uses compressed air to turn a small air turbine, generating enough power to run a motorcycle for up to 40 minutes.

Their design, described in a paper appearing in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, could be combined with a compressed air cylinder as a replacement for traditional internal combustion engines.

In areas where motorcycles are a major source of public transportation, such a technology could cut emissions substantially if widely implemented.

According to Bharat Raj Singh ,one of the two authors on the paper and a researcher at the SMS Institute Technology in Lucknow,India some 50 -60 percent of present emissions in some areas could be reduced with the new technology ,though a no. of technical challenges remain.

Designing a compact but high capacity air tank to store sufficient fuel for long rides is a major hurdle.

Existing tanks would require some one to stop about every 30 km to swap tanks.
Motorcycle designed in India to run on compressed air.

Two Indian engineers have conceptually designed a new ,cleaner motorcycle engine that uses compressed air to turn a small turbine ,generating power to run the vehicle for up to 40 minutes. Bharat Raj Singh and Onkar Singh ,researchers at the SMS Institute of Technology in Lucknow, submitted their invention to JRSE, an interdisciplinary ,peer –reviewed journal published by the American Institute of Physics for review. Their design ,described in the journal 's May 7 issue ,can be combined with a compressed air cylinder as a replacement for traditional internal combustion engines. In areas where motorcycles are a major source of public transportation ,such a technology can drastically cut emissions if implemented appropriately.

According to Bharat Raj Singh, designing a compact but high capacity air tank to store sufficient fuel for long rides was a major hurdle.
Motorcycles Powered by Compressed Air.

The typical motorcycles used in the world of today, has an engine that burns gasoline. This source of power emits green house gas and therefore, negatively contributes to environmental pollution.

Two scientists in India have found a ground –breakthrough. They have designed a cleaner motorcycle engine: an engine using compressed air to rotate a small air turbine. The power generated is sufficient to power the motorcycle for around 40 minutes.

A previous issue of the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy described the design of the engine. The compressed air cylinder could be a suitable substitute for the conventional combustion engine. Motorcycles powered by compressed air cylinders could reduce carbon emission tremendously, especially in regions where motorcycles are primarily used as public transportation .

One of the authors,Bharat Raj singh ,from SMS Institute of Technology in Lucknow,,India says that in some regions carbon emission could decline by uo to 50 – 60 percent with this new clean technology .However ,there are few technical obstacles that need to be addressed . A major hurdle is to design high –capacity air tanks ,which could provide adequate "fuel" to allow long rides.
