An Answer to Gazprom Tariff: Alternative Energy Boost Has Finally Reached Ukraine

Kiev, Ukraine -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/07/2010 -- While politicians fight over the price of gas, Ukrainian businessmen cut down their energy expenses. Ukraine witnesses a boost in demand for alternative energy – biofuel and wind-power generators.

"By processing 600 thousands of corn silo we receive 40 mln. of m3 of gas per annum. The gas we get is equivalent to natural gas supplied by Russia," – comments Oleg Kuprienko, chief manager of a biogas plant project on a sugar plant in Babyno village (Rivne region, Ukraine). In 2009 the group of companies "Inseco," owners of the sugar plant, decided to switch to alternative power of their own making. Plant's 33 reactors will process organic waste and corn silo. While the raw materials don't cost "Inseco" a cent, the project itself has the budget of 25 mln. Euro. "We're willing to take the following expenses," – says Oleg Kuprienko. – "The price for natural gas is constantly rising. The plant will provide energy for all our needs and we will also be able to sell electricity on the energy market."

While alternative energy constitutes 5% of the world's energy supply (15% - in EU countries), currently alternative energy in Ukraine provides approximately 1% of the country's total energy potential. However, before the financial crisis, alternative energy segment constituted only 0,5% of the total energy supply and doubled over the year.

"In first few months of 2010 we received 9 new contracts, in comparison to 7 contacts we signed in course of 2009," – states Igor Aksiutov, CEO of "ZORG Ukraine," construction company that built biogas plants for Inseco. – "Yet, a large amount of companies, willing to build a biogas plant, need to spent a year or two planning the funding schemes for future construction projects."

As NAER experts state, in case if banks will provide credit programs for the purchase of technical equipment in the nearest future, in 2015 alternative energy segment in Ukraine will reach 5% of the national energy supply.

EU and Ukraine Enhance Cooperation in Alternative Energy Production

Kiev, Ukraine -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/18/2010 -- According to information provided by RBK-Ukraine, EU increases the amount of biogas production by 20% per year. In half of the cases, fumes of city dumpsters serve as the source for biogas production. Meanwhile biogas plants for recycling of organic waste, employed by EU countries, are developed and designed in Ukraine, such as biogas projects by "EcoGen SIA" (Latvia). Furthermore, European countries outside EU also seek the benefits of working with Ukrainian experts. Biogas plant to be constructed in Moldova by Ukrainian construction company "ZORG Ukraine" is going to be among the country's largest.

In course of the first few days of 2010, "ZORG Ukraine" signed two new contracts for construction of biogas plants with Latvian company "EcoGen SIA." "EcoGen SIA" is already in possession of one biogas plant, built by "ZORG Ukraine" in 2009. Its electrical capacity reaches 1 MW. As planned, two new biogas plants will use corn silo and grain and will have the capacities of 1 MW and 0,5 MW. "ZORG Ukraine" is currently developing an engineering plan for biogas plants. The dates for the construction work have not yet been established.

In February 2010, Moldavian company "BioEnergAgro" singed a 10 mln. Euro contract with "ZORG Ukraine" for construction of a biogas plant. The plant will process 320 tons of corn silo per day. Biogas will then be purified to the stage of natural gas according to GOST 5542-87. "BioEnergAgro" plans to supply 16 mln. m3 of methane into national gas pipeline network per year.

Ukrainian biogas market has the potential of 25-30 milliards Euro. Due to a number of biogas plants, built by Ukrainian experts in course of 2009, the dynamic growth of alternative energy production in Ukraine is currently higher in comparison to any country, member of European Union. At this point, the sales turnover of Ukrainian biogas companies is relatively limited – around 3-4 mln. Euro, yet experts claim, in 2011 total cost of biogas plants in the process of construction will be 50-70 mln. Euro per annum.

National Energy Regulation Commission of Ukraine Determined "Green Tariff" Rate for "Ukrainska Molochna Kompania"

Kiev, Ukraine -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/18/2010 -- On 29.04.2010 National Energy Regulation Commission of Ukraine (NERC) determined "green tariff" rates for "Ukrainska Molochna Kompania" company (UMK). UMK is the first company in Ukraine to receive the license, which allows UMK to sell electricity produced by means of biogas technologies.

Although NERC provided the "green tariff" license to UMK in October 2009, National Energy Regulation Commission was not able to determine the rates until April 2010. Currently, "green tariff" rate is 0,70 hryvnias (UAH), exclusive of VAT for 1 kilowatt-hour. UMK will receive payment with the ratio 2,5 of the standard tariff i.e. 1,75 UAH/kilowatt-hour.

Biogas plant for the diary farm owned by UMK was designed and built by Ukrainian engineering company "ZORG UKRAINE" in 2009. Biogas is manufactured from production wastes of the farm, while plant's capacity reaches 1 megawatt.
