Hudson Regional Hospital Becomes Top Destination for "Top Doctors"

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/04/2019 -- Since opening the new Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus nearly two years ago, the full-service, community-based institution has spared no expense when it comes to attracting the best in physician talent, driving smooth and efficient operations, and delivering the utmost in compassionate, patient-centric care. And the health care community has taken notice, with more than 30 of Hudson Regional Hospital's physicians recently being recognized as "Top Doctors in New Jersey" by Castle Connolly, America's trusted source for identifying top doctors through an exhaustive and independent process of peer nomination, research, review, and screening.

Specifically, "A number of physicians in a range of areas at Hudson Regional Hospital — including the specialties of spine surgery, orthopedics, cardiology, vascular surgery and pain management — were recognized as Top Doctors by their peers, and we couldn't be prouder," said Nizar Kifaieh, MD, MBA, CPE, FACEP, president and CEO of Hudson Regional Hospital. "This elite recognition not only reflects the strength of our ability to deliver a best-in-class patient experience for area residents in need of inpatient or outpatient hospital care but also demonstrates Hudson Regional's attractiveness as a destination and center of medical excellence for the area's top physician talent."

The Physicians' Choice
Top physicians throughout the tri-state area are choosing to affiliate with Hudson Regional Hospital for many reasons, according to Dr. Kifaieh.

"We're a smaller, more nimble hospital that's truly a physician-focused facility," he said. "We seek the most talented physicians and offer them a hospital that will cater to their needs, putting cutting-edge tools in their capable hands and enabling them to do what they do best, which is to care for their patients in the most effective way possible."

"In addition to serving as the CEO of Hudson Regional Hospital," Dr. Kifaieh noted, "I'm a physician and I can confirm that, because of inefficient or bureaucratic managerial processes and procedures, many hospitals aren't in sync with their doctors' needs. The owner of our hospital has been in the health care industry for years and fully understands the need for efficiency and productivity, particularly when it comes to obtaining the most modern technological tools." From a technology perspective, Dr. Kifaieh said, "other hospitals lag because their decision-making process is long, but our process at Hudson Regional is streamlined and quick, which ultimately benefits patients."

Hudson Regional's collection of state-of-the-art equipment includes the Stryker Mako, Mazor, Globus ExcelsiusGPS and da Vinci Xi-branded robotic-assisted surgical systems to facilitate minimally invasive orthopedic, spinal, bariatric, urologic, gynecologic and other procedures.

Within the medical community, a broad range of top physicians recognize and appreciate the significant investments that Hudson Regional Hospital continues to make in the latest technology. Among them is Robert Kayal, MD, FAAOS, founder, president and CEO of Kayal Orthopaedic Center, which has four New Jersey locations in Paramus, Glen Rock, Franklin Lakes, and Westwood. Through their relationship with Hudson Regional Hospital, Dr. Kayal and his team of surgeons will be able to perform Mako robotic-arm assisted joint replacements and other minimally invasive orthopedic surgical procedures in the hospital's state-of-the-art operating rooms, providing convenient access to these critical services for many patients from North Jersey and New York.

"I'm very excited to work with Hudson Regional Hospital," Dr. Kayal said. "They've invested tremendously in the field of robotic-arm assisted surgery and have several different robots. Hudson Regional Hospital shares my philosophy of staying current, keeping our fingers on the pulse of medicine, and offering the latest and greatest technologies in the field of orthopedic surgery."

"The robotic platform provides the surgeon with an extraordinary degree of precision in dissecting out pathology and performing complex repairs, all the while sparing surrounding healthy tissue," agreed Yitzhack Asulin, MD, FACS, FACOG, director of Female Pelvic Reconstruction and Robotic Surgery at Hudson Regional Hospital.

Among other leading-edge capabilities, Hudson Regional Hospital also offers a comprehensive wound management program that will soon feature a licensed hyperbaric chamber, a top-notch interventional radiology program, a new Center for Sleep Medicine and a unique open MRI machine that enables patients to receive sophisticated imaging services in a comfortable manner. Fully renovated facilities and an extensive range of community outreach programs are further solidifying Hudson Regional Hospital's position as one of the area's leading health care destinations.

"Patients are having an excellent experience here and are providing great feedback, which is another reason why top physicians are choosing to work with us," Dr. Kifaieh said.

A Best-In-Class Patient Experience
"We excel and are driving great outcomes in a number of areas, including allergy and immunology, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, orthopedic and much more," Dr. Kifaieh said. "Our in-network participation in numerous insurance and managed-care plans and convenient location in the heart of New Jersey meet patients' needs for affordability and accessibility, and obviate the need for them to travel to New York City to receive medical care."

"These days, there are a lot of educated patients out there who will research surgeons and health care centers before selecting a facility," Dr. Kifaieh said. "We understand that and we combine highly skilled providers, great patient outcomes, patient-friendly private rooms and the utmost in modern technology to deliver a best-in-class patient experience."

"As an institution, we're extremely proud of our physicians for being recognized as 'Top Doctors,' and we'll continue to work tirelessly to meet and exceed the expectations of both physicians and patients in our community," said Dr. Kifaieh. "We have great doctors and a commitment to providing superior care to patients and families.

"Whether researching by facility or skilled surgeon, all paths will lead back to Hudson Regional Hospital," he said.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Marat Rysmendiev
Marketing Director
Hudson Regional Hospital
Telephone: 1-201-325-6784
Email: Click to Email Marat Rysmendiev
Web: https://www.HudsonRegionalHospital.com

Hudson Regional Hospital's Investment in Robotic Surgery Yields Big Safety, Outcomes Dividends for Patients

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/06/2019 -- When you combine the expertise of a skilled surgeon with the capabilities of robotic technology, patients benefit in ways ranging from better outcomes and fewer complications to greatly reduced blood loss and shorter recovery time, says Yitzhack Asulin, MD, FACS, FACOG.

Dr. Asulin speaks from experience. The gynecologic surgeon has performed more than 1,300 robotic-assisted procedures, placing him in the top 1% or 2% of surgeons in the United States in terms of procedural volume, and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) has honored him as a "Surgeon of Excellence" in robotic gynecologic surgery. He performs complex pelvic-reconstruction procedures on both local residents and people who travel from across the country and even overseas to have him perform their surgery at Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus.

Hudson Regional Hospital's emergence as a "destination surgical center" is the result of decisions and investments made shortly after new owners and leaders took the helm in early 2018. "Our vision is to have Hudson Regional provide the best that a community hospital offers – in terms of high-quality, comprehensive, patient-centric care – while also emphasizing several areas of specialization, including advanced surgical services," explains Nizar Kifaieh, MD, MBA, CPE, FACEP, the hospital's President and CEO.

"The surgeries that we can perform with our robotic technology include some of the most common procedures in the United States. For example, each year, roughly 600,000 women have a hysterectomy. When I was doing my OG/GYN residency, women having a tradition hysterectomy with a large, open incision faced a long and painful recovery," Dr. Asulin recalls. He adds, "Now, the techniques we can use with the da Vinci robotic surgical system require only a couple of tiny incisions – each just one-third of an inch long – and involve little to no blood loss, much faster recovery, and significantly reduced post-operative pain. This last point is significant not only in terms of quality of life but also because it allows us to keep patients comfortable with a much less-aggressive pain medication regimen, which is an important consideration." The surgeon adds that patients typically can go home the day of their surgery or the following day.

Dr. Asulin explains that Hudson Regional Hospital's robotic surgery program started with a focus on two areas: gynecologic and pelvic-reconstruction procedures, and spinal and other orthopedic surgeries. From there, he notes, the hospital and its surgeons have been moving steadily to expand the role of robotic technology in urologic, bariatric, and abdominal surgeries. Eventually, he notes, Hudson Regional's surgeons also will employ robotics for cardiothoracic surgeries.

"It is not uncommon today for a hospital to have a robotic surgery platform, and to employ it in one or two types of surgery, but few hospitals have made the commitment that Hudson Regional has to stay on the cutting edge of robotic-assisted surgery, and to make the benefits of this technology available to so many different patients undergoing so many different procedures," says Dr. Asulin. As part of that commitment, he notes, the hospital is completing the process to be designated a Center of Excellence by the AAGL, an independent organization dedicated to advancing the use of minimally invasive surgery in women's health.

Dr. Kifaieh, the hospital's CEO, adds that Hudson Regional's commitment to making the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques maximally available to area residents is reflected in the hospital's in-network participation with numerous major health plans. "By developing our robotic surgery program, we are enabling area residents to receive outstanding surgical care without traveling into New York City. But in addition to sparing them the hassles of Manhattan traffic jams, we also want to help them avoid any hassles, detours, and delays related to network status," he notes.

Meanwhile, Dr. Asulin says that the safety, effectiveness, and other benefits of robotic-assisted surgery have been so well-demonstrated that, "In my opinion, we've reached the point where we really have to question whether it is appropriate to perform a traditional, open procedure if that procedure can be done in a robotically assisted fashion. The robotic platform provides the surgeon with an extraordinary degree of precision in dissecting out pathology and performing complex repairs, all the while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Further, the advantages to the patient in terms of the reduced amount of bleeding and rate of infection reduced post-operative pain, and faster recovery time are just so great, that I think this question needs to be asked – and answered in favor of robotic-assisted surgery."

Why People Choose All-New Hudson Regional Hospital Over Others

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/23/2019 -- Eighteen months ago, the Secaucus hospital embarked on an ambitious campaign to offer area residents the high-tech, specialized services normally found in an academic medical center along with the patient-centric focus and full range of care that are the hallmarks of a community hospital. In this interview, Hudson Regional's President and CEO provides an update on progress to-date — and further enhancements on the horizon.

Ever since new owners and a new management team took the helm at Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus in January 2018, the community hospital has been firing on all cylinders. From making extensive renovations and recruiting top physicians in numerous specialties to attaining in-network status with major insurance plans and investing in cutting-edge technology, Hudson Regional Hospital has taken several large steps toward its goal of setting a new standard for community hospitals and delivering a best-in-class patient experience for area residents in need of inpatient or outpatient hospital care.

"We have studied the needs of the community and developed a specific blend of services to enhance health care quality in a region that lacked an exceptional maternity program, a world-class emergency department, a best-of-breed focus on minimally invasive robotic surgeries, etc.," said Nizar Kifaieh, MD, MBA, CPE, FACEP, president and CEO of Hudson Regional Hospital.

Key strategic enhancements at Hudson Regional Hospital over the past 18 months include:

Investments in Top Talent
"We've recruited top physicians and surgeons from New York City and New Jersey to join our staff," Dr. Kifaieh shared. "Patients who previously traveled to institutions that are outside the area for treatments with trusted practitioners now can have the same high-tech, minimally invasive surgery — often with the same surgeon — at Hudson Regional Hospital." Dr. Kifaieh added that the medical expertise of the hospital's seasoned team of physicians is augmented by the skills and commitment of all of Hudson Regional's staff members. "From our post-operative support professionals and nurses to our physical therapists, case managers, and more, we offer outstanding in-patient and extended services," he said.

Investments in Technology
Dr. Kifaieh and his management team understand that investments in the right technology help the hospital's surgeons, physicians, and support staff achieve the best patient outcomes. Among other state-of-the-art technology, Hudson Regional Hospital has invested in cutting-edge Mazor, Globus ExcelsiusGPS, and da Vinci Xi-branded robotic-assisted surgical systems to facilitate minimally invasive spinal, bariatric, urologic, and other procedures and will soon acquire another robot uniquely designed for joint replacements. "Use of these types of minimally invasive, robotic-assisted technologies enhances the precision with which procedures can by performed by surgeons while reducing the length of the post-operative recovery period for patients," Dr. Kifaieh explained.

In other activities, Hudson Regional recently launched a comprehensive wound management program that will soon feature a licensed hyperbaric chamber. "Our team is focused on limb-saving procedures and re-vascularization of extremities for those patients dealing with chronic diabetes and other conditions that might otherwise necessitate amputation," Dr. Kifaieh said. "In addition, Hudson Regional now possesses one of the few hospital-based open MRI machines in the area, enabling patients to receive sophisticated imaging services in a comfortable manner. Our hospital's interventional radiology program is also among the best in New Jersey, and last year we opened a new Center for Sleep Medicine to support those patients dealing with sleep apnea and a broad range of other sleep disorders." Dr. Kifaieh added that Hudson Regional Hospital has also introduced a new approach to dialysis access that involves the insertion of a magnet into vessels, enabling completion of dialysis procedures in a more comfortable and minimally invasive way.

Investments in Process Improvements
In addition to maintaining short wait times in the hospital's Emergency Department and negotiating for in-network rates with almost all of the insurance companies, and

increasing its in-network participation in managed-care plans to meet patients' needs for affordability and accessibility, Hudson Regional Hospital has invested in a number of tools and programs to provide a positive and efficient patient and staff experience. "We continue to invest in the education of our staff to continuously enhance patient care, and we'll be rolling out a robust new electronic medical record (EMR) system later this year to provide physicians and nurses with ready access to information that will support real-time clinical decision-making," Dr. Kifaieh said.

Investments in Renovations
Hudson Regional has invested in major upgrades to the hospital's parking lot (where parking is free) as well as to its lobby and Radiology Department. "Enhancements to our Emergency Department, operating rooms, and patient rooms are underway, with more upgrades to come throughout this year," Dr. Kifaieh added. "We're excited for patients, visitors, and staff members alike to experience our completely renovated facility, which is being strategically upgraded area by area."

Investments in Community Outreach
"We're proud of the extensive range of community outreach programs we offer," Dr. Kifaieh said. At a time when other area hospitals have shut down such critical services as pediatrics or obstetrics and downsized many outreach programs, "we're committed to filling a void for families and underserved populations in Hudson County," he noted, adding that Hudson Regional Hospital provides extensive services to women and children. Among those, "we offer free prenatal classes to expectant mothers and fathers on the second Saturday of every month and have forged strong partnerships with key community organizations, including Alliance Community Healthcare, North Hudson Community Health, and the Meadowlands YMCA." According to Dr. Kifaieh, "it's about serving our local constituents, improving the health of area residents, and helping them get back to their families and jobs more quickly."

Investing in the Future
Anticipated new capabilities and designations on the horizon for Hudson Regional include the establishment of a neuroscience program, designation as a Stroke Center, achievement of 'Center of Excellence' status for minimally-invasive spinal surgery, gynecologic surgery, joint replacement, and special surgery, and participation in a nationwide quality-assurance and safety program.

"Overall, we're committed to our local residents and want to be known as the top health care destination in the community," said Dr. Kifaieh, who noted that Hudson Regional Hospital's transformation has earned it rave reviews from patients, medical professionals, and industry organizations. In its mission to build a healthier community, he said, "we're a model community hospital that takes pride in providing all of the essential services — and then some — and delivering the area's most exceptional patient experience."

Hudson Regional Hospital's Emergency Dept: Short on Wait Time, Long on Quality Care

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/27/2019 -- Many conditions and complaints bring people to a hospital's Emergency Department, but whether they hobble in on a sprained ankle or drag themselves in with fever and chills, everybody who makes that trip has one thing in common: They've decided that they shouldn't wait to see a doctor.

Alexander Sarenac, MD, couldn't agree more. As Director of Emergency Medicine at Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus, Dr. Sarenac has implemented care protocols and staffing strategies to speed people's path from the registration desk to medical attention. "We're very proud of our door-to-provider time," the board-certified emergency medicine physician said. Dr. Sarenac explained that the majority of newly arriving patients undergo triage — initial assessment of the urgency and severity of their medical issue — within 15 to 20 minutes. "Further, the majority of patients are seen by a provider within approximately 30 minutes of arrival," Dr. Sarenac said, adding that this represents one of the shortest times to care in the northern New Jersey/New York City area.

That emphasis on timely attention is just one of many performance-based goals and other enhancements that the new hospital ownership and medical leadership has implemented in the Emergency Department since taking the reins at Hudson Regional Hospital in 2018.

"All of the physicians providing care in the Emergency Department have practiced emergency medicine for at least a decade, with many having 15- or 20-years' experience caring for patients with all types of emergent conditions," Dr. Sarenac said. "These are clinicians with excellent diagnostic abilities and treatment skills, but they also are physicians who listen, who communicate well, who are sensitive to the concerns of people from various cultural backgrounds, and who bring great compassion and empathy to their work."

That emphasis on effective interaction carries over to how Emergency Department doctors partner with other physicians who may be involved in a patient's care. "We communicate and collaborate with area primary care physicians when their patients present to the Emergency Department, and we have excellent working relationships with the full spectrum of specialists who may need to be consulted or called in to provide comprehensive care," Dr. Sarenac said.

Convenient Location, In-Network Insurance Participation

The commitment to assuring patients ready access to Emergency Department care and, if needed, specialty services, also is reflected in Hudson Regional Hospital's decision to secure in-network status with the area's major insurance and managed care plans. "The whole point is to provide an efficient, convenient means for people to receive the care they need," Dr. Sarenac said. "Hudson Regional Hospital begins with a geographic advantage in that regard, as our location on Meadowlands Parkway here in Secaucus is easily reached from routes 3, 17, 1 and 9; the Garden State Parkway, the New Jersey Turnpike as well as other major highways; and the Lincoln Tunnel. And once they arrive at the Emergency Department, we can offer patients short waiting times thanks to the procedures we've put in place, but we realize that access is not just a matter of place and time, but also is affected by insurance coverage. That's why the hospital, has in-network participation in the majority of commercial plans."

Hudson Regional Hospital's leadership also is focused on enhancing the Emergency Department's physical appearance, functionality, and patient experience. Dr. Sarenac said that while facelifts typically are performed in operating rooms, the Emergency Department is the location for one such procedure that will provide far more than cosmetic results.

We're in the midst of a renovation, or 'facelift,' that entails remodeling all areas of the Emergency Department. Besides making for a brighter, more pleasant environment, we're incorporating features and approaches that will facilitate the more-efficient delivery of care, and that will enhance patient and family members' convenience and comfort," the physician said. He explained that upgrades include flat screen televisions in all rooms and an interactive bedside call system.

The Emergency Department at Hudson Regional Hospital places an emphasis on getting patients in front of doctors as quickly as possible.

"We see, and are fully staffed and equipped to treat, the full spectrum of medical issues in our Emergency Department, from heart attacks and strokes to conditions and problems that, while important and requiring prompt attention, are non-life-threatening," Dr. Sarenac said. "Regardless of what brings you to the Emergency Department, you will receive prompt, individualized and compassionate care at Hudson Regional, as well as the diagnostic assessments, treatments, and referrals you need. We know that nobody wants to be in an Emergency Department, but when it's where you need to be, we want you to know that we're there for you."

Hudson Regional Hospital is located at 55 Meadowlands Parkway in Secaucus. It's Emergency Department is open and fully staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can be contacted at (201) 392-3210.
Healogics Wound Care Center Opens at Hudson Regional Hospital

Center to offer leading-edge wound care using state-of-the-art technology

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/11/2019 -- Healogics Wound Care Center at Hudson Regional Hospital located at 55 Meadowlands Parkway in Secaucus, opens today, April 10, 2019, to offer advanced wound care for people living with chronic, non-healing wounds. Hudson Regional Hospital has partnered with Healogics, the nation's leading provider of advanced, chronic wound care services. Healogics is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, and has a nationwide network of nearly 700 Wound Care Centers®.

It is estimated that chronic wounds affect 6.7 million people in the U.S. and that number is rising, fueled by an aging population and increasing rates of conditions such as diabetes, obesity and the late effects of radiation therapy. If left untreated chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb.

Healogics Wound Care Center at Hudson Regional Hospital offers an evidence-based, systematic approach to advanced wound care. A patient's individualized treatment plan may include specialized wound dressings, debridement, compression therapy, advanced cellular products and topical growth factors, edema management and/or non–invasive vascular assessment. These treatments are the result of a team approach between the Center's physicians, nurses and the referring physician. A treatment plan is developed and scheduled based on the patient's needs. Once treatment is complete, the patient will return to their primary physician to continue routine care.

Additionally, Healogics Wound Care Center at Hudson Regional Hospital will be equipped with Healogics newest technologies: Clinical Optimizations and Decision SupportsM. These applications on Healogics' WoundSuitesM platform, enable the critical connection between people living with chronic wounds and their multidisciplinary healthcare team for collaborative, evidence–based, patient–centered care.

Likely candidates for treatment at the Center are those suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections, compromised skin grafts and flaps, and wounds that haven't healed within a reasonable time frame. People with wounds that have not improved with traditional methods of treatment may benefit from a visit to Healogics Wound Care Center at Hudson Regional Hospital. No referral is needed, so call today.

About Healogics
Headquartered in Jacksonville, Fla., Healogics is the nation's wound healing expert. Last year over 330,000 patients received advanced wound care through a nationwide network of nearly 700 Wound Care Centers®. The Healogics team is made up of almost 3,000 employees, 4,000 affiliated physicians and a Healogics Specialty Physician practice group of nearly 300. In addition to the company's network of outpatient Centers, Healogics partners with over 300 skilled nursing facilities to care for patients with chronic wounds, and provides inpatient consults at more than 80 partner hospitals. As the industry leader, Healogics has the largest repository of chronic wound–specific patient data in the country. The Healogics Wound Science Initiative, an effort launched in 2017 to provide peer-reviewed research, recognizes the value and relevance of big data and advanced analytics to drive continuous, collaborative learning towards a better understanding of how to efficiently utilize healthcare resources for patients with wounds.

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/05/2019 -- Ever since being taken over by a new owner last year, the hospital in Secaucus — now renamed Hudson Regional Hospital — continues to offer new services for patients.

And the latest is robotic surgery. In response to the lack of minimally invasive surgical options in the area, Hudson Regional Hospital has launched The Institute for Robotic Surgery, featuring the ExcelsiusGPS, the Da Vinci XI and the Mazor Robotic Guidance System.

The Institute's staff has been trained into specialized teams for each of the three technologies, ensuring a more efficient operating room experience for both surgeon and patient.

"There is a misconception that patients need to go into Manhattan to get the best orthopedic surgical care, but we are affiliated with some of North Jersey's and New York City's most gifted doctors right here in Hudson County," Dr. Nizar Kifaieh, MD, MBA, CPE FACEP, President and CEO for Hudson Regional Hospital. "Together with our specialty-trained operating and recovery room support staff, the Institute can offer surgeons and patients an expert, efficient experience that supports quicker and easier recovery times."

The Institute for Robotic Surgery offers specialized surgery in the following modalities:

Orthopedic
Spine
Gynecology and Uro-Gynecology
Hernia Repair and Bariatric Surgery
General Surgery
Urologic Surgery

About Hudson Regional Hospital
Hudson Regional Hospital is located at 55 Meadowlands Parkway in Secaucus. Since being taken over by new owner Yan Moshe last year, the Secaucus hospital has started holding public Q&As with the hospital CEO and free childbirth and prenatal classes, all to market their services to the Secaucus community. They also held a summer festival in their parking lot last July.

The Institute for Robotic Surgery is part of an extensive renovation project by Hudson Regional Hospital to provide the best quality healthcare to Hudson County residents and the surrounding communities. Hudson Regional Hospital's surgical staff can facilitate and provide training to any interested surgeons, the hospital said.

Five Things To Know About Autism

More than 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder, but autism itself remains widely misunderstood. As a result, people with an autism spectrum disorder face a significant amount of stigma, which can present additional challenges for themselves and their families.

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/01/2019 -- More than 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder, but autism itself remains widely misunderstood. As a result, people with an autism spectrum disorder face a significant amount of stigma, which can present additional challenges for themselves and their families. And, although April is National Autism Awareness Month, we at Hudson Regional Hospital wanted to get a head start on awareness. We have put together a list of five quick but essential facts you should learn about autism. Understanding this condition in greater detail will help you interact more appropriately with people on the autism spectrum, provide more meaningful support to your loved ones, and be part of the vital national movement to spread awareness about mental health.

1: Autism Diagnoses Are on the Rise
Approximately 1 percent of all people in the world are estimated to be on the autism spectrum. However, that number is growing in the United States. The CDC reported that the prevalence of autistic children in the United States rose by 119.4 percent between 2000 and 2010. Recent statistics indicate that the incidence of autistic children in the U.S. now exceeds 1 in 68, making autism the fastest-growing developmental disability in the country. And, as with other diseases, it is prevalent with Ashkenazi Jews.

2: Symptoms of Autism Vary Greatly From Patient to Patient
Autism can manifest in numerous ways, some of which are more obvious to the outside world than others. A person on the autism spectrum may exhibit delays in learning a language, trouble making or maintaining eye contact, challenges related to making small talk or carrying on conversations, difficulties with executive functioning, poor motor skills, and atypical sensory sensitivity. They may also have a narrow scope of intense interests, making it difficult to hold their attention to other matters.

3: Autism is NOT an Intellectual Disability
One of the most common stereotypes surrounding autism is that people who live with it have lower intelligence than others. However, the intellect of autistic people varies greatly—just like that of "neurotypical" individuals. An American study in 2014 found that almost 50 percent of all children with an autism spectrum disorder have average or above-average IQs. Autistic individuals may be particularly adept in specific areas but can struggle in others. For example, an autistic person may have above-average book-learning abilities, but below-average social skills.

4: Early Identification Can Reduce Lifetime Challenges
A persistent myth about autism spectrum disorder is that it is untreatable. While children diagnosed with autism do not "grow out of it," studies show that identifying autism early on in life and applying strategies can reduce the challenges they will face later in life. The CDC's "Learn the Signs. Act Early" web page provides detailed milestones that parents can use to track the development of their children and take appropriate steps to seek assistance when necessary.

5: Autism Affects Adults Too
Much of the media attention surrounding autism focuses on children, but adolescents and adults with autism need support and understanding as well. Approximately 67 percent of families with autistic adolescents are estimated to be unaware of suitable transition services, and while nearly three-quarters of these adolescents want to work, only 19 percent are currently employed.

Medical science has much to learn about autism, and the general population must do everything in its power to be more accommodating of autistic individuals while this vital research is being conducted. Learn the facts and take care to approach the issue of autism with sensitivity and compassion so that you can be part of the solution.

Get in Shape This Spring

Paired with National Nutrition Month and first hints of spring, this month is the perfect time to get active. If you have had a relatively inactive winter, perhaps you can use this month to fold regular exercising back into your routine.

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/22/2019 -- Paired with National Nutrition Month and first hints of spring, this month is the perfect time to get active. If you have had a relatively inactive winter, perhaps you can use this month to fold regular exercising back into your routine. If you have been staying active, then March is the perfect month to push yourself to conquer new challenges.

Hudson Regional Hospital provides advice and helpful suggestions that can be used for dealing with getting into shape. Based on the most recent data and input from Hudson Regional Hospital physicians, here is a selection of ideas that can be applied to everyday life that benefits your overall well-being and solidifies your other healthy practices this month.

Sign up for a road race
Running is the perfect way to get active (or stay active), and March is a great running month. As the weather warms up and the trails shed any last vestiges of snow or ice, now is the time to get out there and start making miles. To keep yourself motivated, sign up for a road race. Countless businesses and organizations throughout the United States sponsor road race events in the spring and summer. Memorial Day weekend is an especially popular time for these kinds of events. Look for one near you. If you are just getting into running, a 5K or 10K race is a good challenge. If you've been running for a while, test your boundaries with a marathon or a half-marathon. Either way, have fun!

Join a local sports group
Getting into fitness can be a terrific way to meet people and make new friends. Look for a sports group, team or league near you that appeals to your talents and interests. Depending on where you live, you could have a wide range of options available to you, some competitive (like soccer or ultimate frisbee leagues) and some not so competitive (local biking or running groups). Either way, getting involved with a group will help you stay motivated because you'll be accountable to others as well as yourself.

Pick out a cool place to hike
Sometimes, getting active can be as simple as taking a walk in the woods. Set aside some time on Saturday or Sunday for a hike. Or research cool hiking spots near where you live; from recreational trails to nature reserves to national parks, there are no wrong answers here. Just get out there, hike a few miles and enjoy the scenery.

Bike to work for a month
If possible, make a pledge to bike to work for a month. Not only is this kind of commitment a fantastic way to get your daily exercise, but it's also an effective way to reduce your carbon footprint. You don't necessarily have to bike to work every day, especially if it's raining. However, challenging yourself to do it once a week can be hugely rewarding and, hey, maybe you will make it part of your routine.

Get friends or family members together for a physical activity
Next time you get together with friends or family, skip dinner and arrange a physical activity. A bike ride along the coast, a pick-up game of ultimate frisbee, a family baseball game. These kinds of activities are all a lot of fun and provide great bonding experiences—all while getting your heart rate up.
Based on the most recent data and input from Hudson Regional Hospital physicians, here is a selection of tools that can be applied to receive better food for your overall well-being and to start forming healthier practices this month.

Take Inventory of Your Kitchen Before You Shop
Before buying more food, consider what you already have on hand. You might find that you don't need to shop just yet or that you need fewer groceries than you thought. Buy ingredients that complement what you already have to make it easier and less expensive to prepare healthy meals at home—a strategy that's as good for the environment as it is your waistline.

Pay Attention to Portion Sizes and How Fast You Eat
Eat and drink only what you need. Everyone's calorie needs are different. Listen to your body, and eat only what you need to alleviate your hunger. Resist the temptation to eat or drink more than you need.

It takes your stomach 20 minutes to tell your brain that it is full. However, most people eat a meal in 10 minutes. Studies show that fullness is a complex concept that combines the number of times you chew, the time you spend eating, the look of the food on the plate, as well as the actual amount of food you eat. Technically, slow eating increases levels of two appetite-lowering chemicals (peptide YY and glucagon-like peptide-1).

Expand Your Dietary Horizons
Choose a variety of foods from all the food groups each day to ensure that you are consuming all the essential nutrients your body needs for optimal health. National Nutrition Month is a great time to try a new fruit or vegetable or cook some new healthy recipes. Including a wide variety of foods in your diet will help give you the energy you need each day, as well as the protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and so on you, need to stay healthy.

Get Your Kids Involved
Kids love a good celebration! Use National Nutrition Month as a way to teach them more about healthy eating. Make it fun by letting kids choose a few new recipes to try. Talk about what makes a food healthy, and let them help with age-appropriate cooking or food prep tasks. Kids are much more likely to eat something they picked out themselves. Give them healthy guidelines, and then hand over the decision-making power.

Find a Physical Activity You Love
Part of good health is getting plenty of exercises. If you find exercise boring, it's time to look for a nonconventional way to burn calories, build strength and protect your heart. Dancing, swimming, hiking, and gardening are all excellent forms of exercise. Try walking to shul every day instead of driving. Whatever you enjoy, do it regularly for the best benefits.

Celebrate National Nutrition Month this month by working on building new habits and making food choices. This not only helps you but also our planet.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month at Hudson Regional Hospital

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/08/2019 -- For many Americans, colorectal cancer is an all-too-common reality as the disease is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the United States.

It has been determined that preventive testing has significantly reduced colorectal cancer. Survival rates for colorectal cancer closely mirror how you get tested. The five-year survival rate for colorectal cancer found at the local stage is 90 percent.

So, with rigorous preventive testing paired with healthy living, colorectal cancer be something seen in the rearview mirror. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and Hudson Regional Hospital will be posting information and hosting events about this topic.

Hudson Regional Hospital provides different examination and treatment options that can be used for dealing with colon cancer. Based on the most recent data and input from Hudson Regional Hospital physicians, here is a selection of tools that can be applied to help manage your life with heart disease.

Preventive Colorectal Cancer Tests
The Colorectal Cancer Alliance recommends regular screenings for colon cancer, which can vary based on your age and ethnicity. It's typical for people to begin colon screenings at the age of 50 and then regularly after that.

Moreover, if your family has a history of colorectal cancer, screening is advised starting at age 45, and if you have any signs or symptoms, you should be screened right away.

Healthy Living
Besides testing, there are a plethora of ways people can stay healthy. Consistent evidence shows that diets in high in vegetables and fruits reduce the likelihood. Also, people who exercise 30 to 60 minutes a day can reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer by 30 to 40 percent.

Also, try to avoid cigarettes and alcohol. Long-term cigarette smoking has been linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer while drinking 3.5 drinks a day can increase your risk of developing colorectal cancer 1.5 times.

Jewish Focus
According to Hudson Regional Hospital gastroenterologist Dr. Scott Lippe, Ashkenazi Jews should be especially keen on the dangers of colon cancer.

"A genetic mutation on the "colon cancer gene" is found in over 6 percent of all Ashkenazi Jews in America and increases to 28 percent of those Jews with a family history of colorectal cancer," said Dr. Lippe. "The average non-Jewish American colon cancer rate is about 6 percent as a baseline. Given the increased incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), which also predisposes to a higher colon cancer rate, it can be confidently asserted that the average Ashkenazi Jew in America is at a higher than average risk for colorectal cancer."

However, cancer signs such as a precancerous polyp in the bowel, identified at an early stage render colon cancer entirely preventable. A colonoscopy is a procedure performed on a sleeping patient with a thin, flexible scope attached to video equipment. Polyps can be biopsied or removed entirely in a painless fashion. The patient only needs to clean out their bowels the night before with a liquid preparation.

It would seem advisable for physicians to identify patients who are of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry and approach a screening strategy that is appropriate for individuals at higher-than-normal risk for colon cancer. This would include an initial screening colonoscopy at least by the age of 50, or 10 years before the age of onset of disease in a close relative. This should be viewed as nothing more than routine screening, like pap smears, prostate exams, and mammographies.

Hudson Regional Hospital Celebrates Random Acts of Kindness Week

Hudson Regional Hospital has become a clear steward for their community, hosting community events, producing festivals and helping those in our community in need of medical care.

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/22/2019 -- When Hudson Regional Hospital opened its doors in early 2018, their one goal in mind was to "build a healthier community" for Secaucus and Northern New Jersey residents. Thankfully, on a management level, Hudson Regional Hospital is well on its way. Hudson Regional Hospital capped off 2018 fulfilling their commitment to becoming in-network with most major insurances, attracting some of the best physicians and medical staff in the Tri-State Area and investing in state-of-the-art technology.

These commitments were not without promises to the community as well. Throughout 2018 and early 2019, Hudson Regional Hospital has become a clear steward for their community, hosting community events, producing festivals and helping those in our community in need of medical care. And, as we finish out Random Acts of Kindness Week, here is a spotlight on some chesed acts specifically.

Community Programs and Outreach
Following the terrible attack on the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Hudson Regional Hospital jumped right in to provide the local communities with free events that highlighted three specific concepts, "Surviving an Active Shooter Event," "Stop the Bleed" and "Hands-Only CPR." Hundreds of people participated in these seminars, and thousands more have been trained in "Hands-Only CPR." And the seminar and panel for breast cancer was a big hit, as participants were able to ask questions of the members of the panel who were survivors.

Before this past Yomim Noraim, HRH conducted an event for the law enforcement community to explain what the frum community does and where security is needed. Attendees included local police departments through federal organizations like Homeland Security and FBI.

The EMS department has already announced nine free courses for the community this year. This includes topics like stroke awareness & prevention, opioid overdose response and prenatal classes.

Holiday Gifts
This holiday season, Hudson Regional Hospital paid $36,000 to complete all sales on layaway items at the Marshall's in Harmon Meadow, Secaucus. Also, Hudson Regional Hospital presented $10,000 to support the programs and services at the Secaucus Youth Alliance and $9,000 in Meadowlands YMCA daycare scholarships.

While presenting the check to Marshall's, hospital CEO Nizar Kifaieh commented on what holidays gifts meant for people in the community. "There are many instances where health, job, misfortune or other unforeseen circumstances have forced people to abandon holiday gifts they wanted to give to loved ones," he said. "Our gifts to the gift-givers will ensure that shoppers can celebrate the holidays they imagined them to be."

Summer Fun Festival
To capitalize on a beautiful summer, Hudson Regional Hospital was excited to host our inaugural Summer Fun Festival. This free event brought over a thousand Northern New Jersey residents down to the facility for free children's activity, fitness demonstrations and access to health and fitness information.

The Hudson Regional Hospital Foundation
Although the Hudson Regional Hospital Foundation was the chief organizer of the Marshall's layaway donation, the Foundation is of vital importance for the hospital's 2019 goals. Established in 2018, the Hudson Regional Hospital Foundation's goal has been to benefit the community and ensure that the people who live and work here are provided for in all aspects of their well-being.

To help build up the Foundation, the hospital is planning an inaugural Golf Outing and Pool Party to be held on July 15, at Alpine Country Club in Demarest. All proceeds from this event will be donated to charities that provide food, healthcare, and family planning. If you are interested in sponsorship opportunities for the development, please contact Marat Rysmendiev at MRysmendiev@HudsonRegionalHospital.com.

Hudson Regional Hospital Enhances First Responders-Patient Communication with File of Life Medical Information Card Program

Goal to Sign Up all Secaucus Residents in 2019 through Series of Community Health and Registration Events

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/22/2019 -- Hudson Regional Hospital, in partnership with Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli and the town of Secaucus have improved First Responder-patient communications by creating a File Of Life emergency medical information card program for Secaucus citizens.

Registration in the national File of Life program involves filling out a foldable card with pertinent medical information. The card is placed in a red magnetic file that first-responders are trained to look for on the refrigerator or in the freezer, that assists them in providing care to patients even if they are not able to communicate at the time of the emergency. File of Life has been providing its life-saving information cards for more than two decades and is in 18 million homes nationwide.

Hudson Regional Hospital's healthcare professionals will be available to assist residents in filling out their own free File of Life cards and provide free health screenings to anyone who registers at a series of Community Registration Events. The program will officially begin after it is announced at the Secaucus Mayor and Council Caucus meeting on Tues., Feb. 26th at 4:30 PM at 1203 Paterson Plank Road.

"It's a simple way for citizens to ensure they are getting the best possible care in a medical emergency, and a great step towards building a healthier Secaucus," said Mayor Michael Gonnelli.

"Medical emergencies can happen to anyone at any time, and a patients' confusion, panic or inability to provide information on current medical issues can interfere with their care," said Kristin Hyman, Chief of EMS for Hudson Regional Hospital. "The File for Life card can speak for them and can tell public safety dispatchers, police officers, firefighters and paramedics what steps to take to save their lives.

Registration events will be held throughout the year at large residential complexes, public gathering places, and local businesses with the goal to have all Secaucus residents enrolled by the end of 2019. The hospital's Community Outreach Team representatives will come to to the homes of any Secaucus residents who are unable to attend these events due to mobility or health issues.

Hudson Regional Hospital is the first hospital in Hudson County to offer the File for Life emergency medical card program. It intends to work with municipal and county officials to have all Secaucus residents registered by the end of 2019.

A full list of Community Registration Events can be found at www.hudsonregionalhospital.com/about-us/events.

For- and non-profit organizations interested in hosting an on-site Community Registration Event, or those requesting a free File for Life information packet can call or text 201-687-1107 or e-mail EMS@hudsonregionalhospital.com.
These are the first twins born at Hudson Regional since new owner Yan Moshe took over in January 2018. The hospital is eager to attract expectant mothers to deliver there; in January, they launched a series of free monthly childbirth classes.

Maddison and Maison are nicknamed "cupids," as they arrived a week before Valentine's Day. The infants and mother are doing fine today, two weeks later, a hospital spokeswoman said. She did not know how they were delivered, whether it was a vaginal birth or c-section.

The twins were born to parents who are Hudson Regional Hospital employees, Jaime Martinez, and fiance Edyleidy Rojas. Martinez, the vice president of physician relations and Rojas, an administrative assistant, met while working at the hospital in 2018.

It is not unusual for hospitals to try to woo expectant mothers, as childbirth is quite costly and is usually fully reimbursed by health insurers.

February Is American Heart Month at Hudson Regional Hospital

February is American Heart Month at Hudson Regional Hospital (HRH). Our Cardiology Department deals with all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases (cardiology).

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/08/2019 -- February is American Heart Month at Hudson Regional Hospital (HRH). Our Cardiology Department deals with all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases (cardiology). This department, like every department in our hospital, is staffed with specially trained physicians and nurses and outfitted with the latest technology and equipment to provide you with the best possible care.

For a majority of Americans, heart disease is, unfortunately, a topic that is on top of our minds. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in four deaths in the United States is caused by heart disease. Furthermore, heart disease remains the number one cause of death in the United States.

Hudson Regional Hospital provides different examination and treatment options that can be used for dealing with heart disease. Based on the most recent data and input from Hudson Regional Hospital physicians, here is a selection of tools that can be applied to help manage your life with heart disease.

Healthy Living
With American Heart Month in focus, the American Heart Association's (AHA) believes in eating smart, moving more, and "being well," as three strategies that can benefit your heart's health. When considering your diet, "check for the heart-check mark" on groceries you find at the store. These items, specifically chosen by the AHA are a great source of nutrients and are limited in bad fats and sodium.

In addition, it important to get and stay active outside. Even though the weather is cold, there are some great opportunities for staying active which include swimming indoors, outdoor yoga and hiking. To accompany healthy eating and exercise, it is important to regularly monitor your body as well. The AHA recommends controlling your cholesterol, managing your blood pressure, reducing blood sugar and stopping smoking altogether.

HRH's Department of Non-Invasive Cardiology focuses on patient screening for various types of heart disease. This department includes a cutting-edge echocardiography machine that can evaluate patients for valvular and structural heart disease - either outpatient or inpatient electrocardiography and 24-hour Holter monitoring.

Diagnosis and Treatment
The Cardiology Department also offers regular office hours so that patients who have been discharged from the hospital or referred by their primary care physicians can be seen. The patient's history is examined and a thorough physical examination is performed to determine the cause of the patient's symptoms and the best treatment plan. Diagnostic measures include stress testing in the form of echocardiography and soon, nuclear stress testing to diagnose or rule our heart disease. The department will also soon be able to offer MUGA (multigated acquisition) scans to evaluate the lower chambers of the heart to check whether they are pumping blood properly.

The staff is fully trained to provide the care their patients need no matter what cardiovascular issues they have, including heart failure, coronary artery disease, hypertension, peripheral vascular medicine, cholesterol disorders or heart rhythm disorders. Interventional services including treatment for heart attack and coronary stenting can also be provided.

Preventive Care
Just as important as diagnosis and treatment, however, is prevention. The Cardiology Department will be actively involved in promoting heart disease prevention and helping educate patients on how to stay healthy and avoid problems in the first place. Supported by a skilled and compassionate team including nurses, cardiac technologists, and others, the cardiologists work with patients to determine the best course of treatment and ensure that they have access to the latest and best in healthcare services. The physicians are dedicated to staying up-to-date on the most advanced modern techniques so that they can provide each patient with personalized, expert care.

Hudson Regional Hospital Complements Germ-Fighting Arsenal with Surfacide System

UV-C Light Towers Kill Superbugs Including Staph and CRE

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/18/2019 -- Hudson Regional Hospital has purchased Surfacide UV-C emitting tower systems that will be used to kill superbugs, or multi-drug resistant organisms, including C.diff, MRSA, VRE, CRE and Acinetobacter in all its operating suites, labor, and delivery suites and isolation rooms.

The Surfacide System
The Surfacide Helios system implements multiple emitters through three towers that disinfect all exposed surfaces of the healthcare environments in a single 20 to 30-minute cycle, offering an effective additional line of defense for the Hospital's maintenance staff.

"The Surfacide machine increases the efficacy of our accredited maintenance program in place to create a safe and clean environment for all our patients and visitors," said Dr. Nizar Kifaieh, MD MBA, CPE, FACEP, President and CEO of Hudson Regional Hospital. "By allowing us to 'see' and reach areas that need to be disinfected in less time, our staff can work more efficiently, and increase the number of patients our doctors can accommodate."

The Surfacide Helios system is one element of Hudson Regional Hospital's extensive patient safety and quality of care program which is accredited by the international standard DNV-GL, the first and only accreditation program to integrate National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (NIAHO®), the CMS Conditions of Participation with the ISO 9001 Quality Management Program (QMS).

Surfacide can detect anyone entering the room and shut off the three emitters instantly, ensuring patient, visitor and employee safety.

Hudson Regional Hospital Announces Slate of Free Educational Programs

Hudson Regional Hospital is proud to announce a nine-part free education series this winter.

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/16/2019 -- Hudson Regional Hospital is proud to announce a nine-part free education series this winter. As part of building a healthier community, we are excited to offer free classes focusing on Hands-Only CPR, active shooter survival, opioid overdose response, and stroke awareness.

"This is an exhilarating opportunity for the hospital," said Sabina Sanchez, Patient Representative/Community Outreach Coordinator. "These classes give our community a great chance to learn many of the basics of medical care, along with getting to know the hospital better."

This comes after last years extensive outreach schedule where HRH hosted an event with federal, state, country and education to the communities, in particular, survival training. This event was in a specific reaction to the traumatic anti-Semitic attack that occurred in Pittsburgh, Pa.

A program this year is on opioid overdose response. Unfortunately, opioid addiction is something that has taken a grasp on our country's health, and even more specifically, New Jersey. According to the most recent data, in 2016, there were 1,409 opioid-related overdose deaths in New Jersey -- a rate of 16 death per 100,000 persons -- compared with a national rate of 13.3 deaths per 100,000.

Further, the number of first-time admissions into drug monitoring facilities has steadily increased since 2014, with 9,843 people entering drug treatment facilities for the first time in 2017. The opioid overdose response programs seek to educate people on the dangers of opioid addictions, how they can tell if people they know are suffering from opioid addiction and the correct way to administer Naloxone.

Naloxene is a common name for "Narcan," a medication that is designed to reverse the harmful effects of opioids. In total, 81.6 percent of reported naloxene reversals involve heroin, while prescription opioids were involved in 14.1 percent of cases. Naloxene has become the most popular device for reversing opioid overdoses because it's ease in use, as it is administered in the nasal area.

For the full schedule of classes, please see below. Space is limited. If you would like to RSVP for the event, please email EMS@HudsonRegionalHospital.com or call (201) 583-6707.

Hudson Regional Hospital Signs on as Presenter of the Jersey Journal's 60th Annual Hudson County Spelling Bee

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/14/2019 -- Hudson Regional Hospital has signed on as the presenter of the 2019 Jersey Journal-Hudson County Spelling Bee.

"We jumped at the chance to support the Hudson County Spelling Bee as a great educational opportunity for the elementary and middle school students in our community who participate," said Dr. Nizar Kifaieh, president and CEO of the Secaucus hospital. "Good luck to all the participants and their families."

So far, 62 Hudson County schools have signed up to participate in the bee, which is set for Saturday, Feb. 23, at Secaucus High School's Arthur F. Couch Performing Arts Center. In case of very inclement weather, the bee will be held March 2.

The winner of the bee goes on to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee outside of Washington, D.C., in the spring.

All elementary school programs in Hudson County are invited to register to send their top speller to compete, said David Blomquist, editor and publisher of The Jersey Journal.

The bee, now in its 60th year, is sponsored by the Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, and County Executive Tom DeGise underwrites the champion's national participation. It is organized and directed by The Jersey Journal.

"We're thrilled to welcome Hudson Regional Hospital as this year's bee presenter,'' Jersey Journal editor-at-large Margaret Schmidt said. "It's so important for the larger community to support educational opportunities like this for the county's children."

The bee is open to students through grade 8 who attend Hudson County schools that have registered to participate.

Participating schools receive a virtual bee-in-a-box that includes study words, rules, pronunciation guides and an array of materials they may use to implement their own school spelling bees.

In addition to the grand prize of competing on the national stage at the Scripps bee, a variety of prizes will be given out at the local bee to the top Hudson speller and several runners-up.

To enroll, go to spellingbee.com. The deadline for registration is Jan. 31.

Hudson Regional Hospital First in NJ Area to Use ExcelsiusGPS Robotic Guidance and Navigation System

Hudson Regional Hospital spinal surgeons are first in the New York metro region to employ the ExcelsiusGPS Robotics Guidance and Navigation System, offering a new, less invasive alternative for spinal surgery candidates.

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/11/2019 -- Hudson Regional Hospital spinal surgeons are first in the New York metro region to employ the ExcelsiusGPS Robotics Guidance and Navigation System, offering a new, less invasive alternative for spinal surgery candidates.

Hudson Regional Hospital is one of only five medical centers in the country to offer this technology that calculates the precise surgical site, then guides the surgeon to that exact site on the patient's body for placement of the implant or instrument.

The benefits to surgeons include decreased operation times, reduced exposure to radiation and increased accuracy through its compatibility with computer tomography (CT), intra-operative CT and fluoroscopic imaging modalities.

Patients who qualify for this procedure should anticipate faster recovery times; less blood loss and muscle damage; and smaller incisions, which will reduce infection risk, nerve damage and scarring.

"This GPS technology is one of many initiatives we have implemented in 2018 to appeal to doctors looking for a top-tier healthcare center to affiliate with so that patients in Hudson, Essex, Passaic and Bergen Counties in need of orthopedic spinal procedures have a place to go that they trust," said Dr. Nizar Kifaieh, president and CEO for Hudson Regional Hospital. "It is an invaluable assistant and complement to our surgeons' skills that will help our patients who qualify feel better faster."

Offering the ExcelsiusGPS to surgeons and patients who qualify is one of many initiatives implemented by Hudson Regional Hospital to improve patient care since taking over the site on Meadowlands Parkway in January 2018. The hospital is also undergoing major facility renovations, collaborating with local community organizations and attracting well-known doctors.

These doctors include Dr. Jonathan Lewin and Dr. Seth Grossman, who performed the first Globus Excelsius spinal fusion at Hudson Regional Hospital and the first robotic fusion in New Jersey using the Globus Excelsius. "The surgery went extremely well," said Dr. Grossman. "I am delighted that we have moved towards the Globus robot. The addition of navigation will open up significant vistas for application, and patients and surgeons should benefit from this advanced technology. My congratulations to Hudson Regional Hospital for this outstanding commitment."

Dr. Jonathan Lewin echoed these sentiments. "This development is exciting because Hudson Regional Hospital is the first facility to house an Excelsius robot in New Jersey," said Dr. Lewin. "The advantage of this third-generation robot is that it includes, in addition to the robotic platform, a navigational platform, which allows for visual and real-time feedback as the screws and implants are being inserted."

Dr. Vora, who has been a longtime proponent of robotics, serves as assistant director in Hudson Regional Hospital's robotic surgical platform, is quoted as follows: "We are committed to advancing the spinal robotic platform step by step. What today is considered cutting edge is going to be tomorrow's standard, and we will be right there to match the needs of patients and surgeons without missing a beat. It is a great accomplishment, and I am looking forward to seeing exactly how far thExis can take us."

As has been previously outlined, the Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders, in conjunction for Hudson Regional Hospital, had acquired a Mazor Robotics system and successfully performed several first ?of kind spine surgeries, including first-ever office-based surgical kyphoplasty with robotics, as well as first ambulatory surgical center sacroiliac fusion using the spinal robotic system.

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/07/2019 -- We are here to present the most recent developments regarding the use of spinal robotics.

More recently, at Hudson Regional Hospital, in conjunction with our group and several others, over 50 robotic spinal fusions have been performed with outstanding results. You can see one of those on the following video link concerning the case of a former police officer who had been previously reported on by the Jewish Link.

Most recently, the Hudson Regional Hospital, in discussion with the robotic surgeons and our group, decided to upgrade our robotic platform and has recently formed a landmark agreement with ?Globus Corporation? for purpose of their third-generation technology robot, the Excelsius. This represents the first Excelsius robot to be housed in a New Jersey hospital. The advantage of this third-generation robot is that it includes, in addition to the robotic platform, a navigational platform, which allows for visual and real-time feedback as the screws and implants are being inserted.

On November 21?st?, 2018, Dr. Grossman and Dr. Lewin performed the first Globus Excelsius spinal fusion at Hudson Regional Hospital and the first robotic spinal fusion in New Jersey using the Globus Excelsius. The addition of navigation will open up significant vistas for application, and patients and surgeons should benefit from this advanced technology. My congratulations to Hudson Regional Hospital for this outstanding commitment."

Plans are now in the works for the community as well as physician-based seminars to further educate hospital staff as well as community and lay people and referring physicians to this new advance in robotic spinal surgery platforms.

Dr. Vora, who has been a longtime proponent of robotics, and who also serves as assistant director in Hudson Regional Hospital robotic surgical platform, is quoted as follows: "Weare committed to advancing the spinal robotic platform step by step. It is a great accomplishment, and I am looking forward to seeing exactly how far this can take us."

Additionally, President Yan Moshe of Hudson Regional Hospital is quoted as saying, "The hospital is excited about this new relationship with Globus robotics, as it will also incorporate the utilization of the Globus screws and hardware into the platform. Globus has long been a leader in spinal equipment and advancement, and we feel that we are in line with their overall thinking as it relates to technology and cost implementation. Looking forward to a fruitful relationship and the betterment of patient care."

Cardiac Arrest: Dos and Don'ts

Unfortunately, according to the American Heart Association, only about 46 percent of people who experience a cardiac arrest out of the hospital receive the help they need. What these victims need is CPR—or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, a simple life-saving skill that anyone can learn to perform.

What is Cardiac Arrest?
Many people don't know the difference between a cardiac arrest and a heart attack and use the two terms interchangeably. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked. If the blocked artery is not reopened quickly, the part of the heart that is nourished and oxygenated by the blood flow from that artery begins to "die." Symptoms of a heart attack can include intense discomfort in the chest, shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, cold sweats, and pain radiating to the jaw or arm. If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of a heart attack, call 911 immediately. The longer a person goes without treatment, the higher the damage.

Cardiac arrest, happens when the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs due to an arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat. A person becomes unresponsive, loses their pulse and stops breathing. Irreversible death will occur within minutes if the victim does not receive immediate treatment.

What To Do
The first step is to call 911, and you're going to perform the simple steps of hands-only CPR. The dispatcher may have further instructions for you. It is essential to remain as calm as you can and follow directions carefully. Remember that answering the dispatcher's questions will not delay the arrival of help. The dispatcher will help you remember the steps of hands-only CPR. You will be asked to place both hands in the center of the victim's chest. You will need to push down hard (about 2-2.5 inches for an adult) and fast (100-120 beats per minute).

Hands-only CPR eliminates the step of stopping compressions to give breaths, as is done in traditional CPR by trained rescuers. While the American Heart Association still recommends CPR with compressions and breaths for infants; children; and victims of drowning, drug overdose or respiratory distress, studies have shown that hands-only CPR is just as useful for most cardiac arrest victims. All you need to remember to save a life: Call 911 and Push Hard and Fast!

Hudson Regional Emergency Medical Services: A Mission to Empower
When Kristin Hyman, HRH's chief of EMS, learned that up to 70 percent of Americans don't know how to perform the life-saving skill of CPR, she and her team made it their mission to change that in our community. "We started by visiting a program called the Resuscitation Academy in Howard County, Maryland, where they have increased their cardiac arrest survival rate remarkably," she said. There, she and her team developed a plan. "It takes about 30 seconds to learn to perform CPR, so we started going out into the community—street fairs, the public library, local schools—and showing people that this is a skill anyone can do."

Next, the EMS team at HRH started to train and drill together to enhance their response to this type of emergency better. "This is arguably the most important type of emergency we ever have to respond to. Wcare started training to ensure we operate like a well-oiled machine (we answer 911 calls in Secaucus). Everyone from the 911 dispatcher to each EMT has a job to do during a cardiac arrest. We like to look at a well-trained community as just one more assistant to help ensure the best chance of survival for the patient."

Along with the Education Center at HRH, they took their community education program even further by developing a series of free courses taught at HRH and in communities, also going into depth on CPR and even broaching topics such as heart attack awareness and stroke prevention. "So far in 2018, we have taught over 1,000 people how to perform CPR. In 2019, we'd like to double or triple that number," Hyman said. For her, and the rest of the HRH team, empowering the community is a personal mission. "Knowledge is power: Whether with cardiac arrest or any other issue, giving citizens the ability to act as their first responders in a medical emergency is the best step we can take towards a healthier community."

Exactly a year ago Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center was taken over by a new management team and re-named Hudson Regional Hospital.

Secaucus, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/07/2019 -- Exactly a year ago Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center was taken over by a new management team and re-named Hudson Regional Hospital.

The Secaucus-based community hospital held a public meeting on Thursday where officials discussed physical, procedural and administrative improvements made in the past year including a $1 million capital improvement project that included renovations to the main entrance as well a new MRI project, the addition of robotics, minimally invasive spine surgery and a greater focus on patient safety.

Dr. Nizar Kifaieh, president and chief executive officer, told NJBIZ that the 200-bed facility intends to spend several millions more over the next few years for additional capital improvements and additional services.

"In 2019 we will upgrade our emergency department and patient rooms, add two operating rooms, introduce technology including a new electronic medical records system and recruit more physicians," Kifaieh said.

The hospital recently added cutting-edge robotic surgery offerings including the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System, ExcelsiusGPS and Mazor Robotics.

The introduction of a real-time internal incident reporting system is helping to promote a culture of safety. "Elevating the quality of care is a priority," Kifaieh said.

Real estate developer Yan Moshe purchased Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in January of 2018.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Marat Rysmendiev
Business Development
Hudson Regional Hospital
Telephone: 201-325-6784
Email: Click to Email Marat Rysmendiev
Web: https://www.HudsonRegionalHospital.com
