Small Medical Offices Take Lead in Growth of Electronic Health Records Adoption, According to SK&A Study

Government incentives and industry promotion play key role in converting 37 percent of solo practices to new technology

Irvine, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/12/2012 -- Small medical offices with one or two physicians in the practice are the fastest-growing segment for adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHR) software, according to the latest results of an ongoing study by SK&A, A Cegedim Company, a leading provider of healthcare information solutions and research.

SK&A's recently updated "Physician Office Usage of Electronic Health Records Software" report reveals, for the first time in two years, that solo and small practices are outpacing larger group practices in EHR adoption. For the second half of 2011, the adoption rate for single-doctor offices jumped 6 percentage points, from 30.8 percent to 36.9 percent, while the adoption rate for offices with 6 to 10 doctors jumped only 2 percentage points, from 63 percent to 65 percent.

"Smaller practices are no longer lagging in EHR adoption," said Dave Escalante, Vice President and General Manager of SK&A and OneKey. "The federal government's offer of reimbursements of up to $64,000 to physicians who show meaningful use and its funding of regional IT training programs for medical workers are beginning to pay off in the adoption cycle. Moreover, vendors of EHR technology and their partners are continuing to promote aggressively to the small-office market, which they see as the next frontier of sales opportunities."

SK&A's report, which was based on an ongoing telephone survey of 240,281 U.S. medical sites, showed an overall EHR adoption rate of 45.6 percent, up from 40.4 percent from the prior period. Other trends include:

- The overall EHR adoption rate rises as the number of physicians practicing at each site rises. Offices with three to five practicing physicians had 54.9-percent adoption, while offices with 26-plus practicing physicians had 77.2-percent adoption.

- The EHR adoption rate rises as the number of exam rooms at each site rises. Offices with one to three exam rooms had 34.6-percent average adoption, while offices with 11-plus exam rooms had 66.6-percent adoption.

- EHR adoption rises as the average daily patient volume at each site rises. Offices with average daily patient volumes of one to 50 patients had 41.2-percent adoption, while offices with 101-plus patients had 68.4-percent adoption.

- Physician specialties with the highest adoption rates are dialysis (68.4%), pathology (66.2%), nuclear medicine (64.2%), and radiology (62.8%).

Site ownership also plays a role in EHR adoption. Medical practices owned by hospitals or health systems had higher adoption rates. Hospital-owned sites had an adoption rate of 59.5 percent compared to non-hospital-owned sites at 43.2 percent. Sites owned by health systems had an adoption rate of 64.2 percent versus those not owned by health systems at 43.1 percent. Additional findings of the study include EHR adoption rates and growth by software application, region and state.

Another ongoing survey by SK&A, titled "EHR Adoption in Medical Offices: Looking Forward," provides deeper insights for EHR installation and intent, including timeframes for adoption, buying factors, primary decision makers and awareness of government incentives. Key findings in this survey from the second half of 2011 of 52,144 U.S. medical sites who have not adopted an EHR include:

- 70 percent have not determined an adoption timeframe.

- Cost is the most important buying factor for 18.7 percent of physician offices.

- 67.3 percent of offices have indicated no single primary buying factor.

- The doctor(s) at the practice (71.1%) are the primary decision makers.

SK&A has assumed the leading role in measuring medical office adoption rates of EHR through its comprehensive telephone survey methodology. SK&A continues its multiyear contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT to track adoption rates and planned usage.

Electronic Health Records (EHR) Adoption Reaches 75% for Larger Physician Offices

Ongoing Study by SK&A Correlates Likelihood of EHR Adoption with Office Size, Number of Exam Rooms and Average Daily Patient Volume

Irvine, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/28/2011 -- SK&A, A Cegedim Company, a leading provider of healthcare information solutions and research, recently released its updated "Physician Office Usage of Electronic Health Records Software" report, which identified the correlation between office size, number of exam rooms and average daily patient volume with the likelihood of EHR adoption.

The report, which was based on an ongoing telephone survey of 237,562 U.S. medical sites, showed an overall EHR adoption rate of 40.4 percent and revealed the following correlations:

• EHR adoption rises as the number of physicians practicing at each site rises. Offices with one practicing physician had 30.8-percent adoption, while offices with 26-plus practicing physicians had 75.5-percent adoption.

• EHR adoption rises as the number of exam rooms at each site rises. Offices with one exam room had 28.2-percent adoption, while offices with 11-plus exam rooms had 64.1-percent adoption.

• EHR adoption rises as the average daily patient volume at each site rises. Offices with average daily patient volumes of one to 50 patients had 36-percent adoption, while offices with 101-plus patients had 66.1-percent adoption.

"This update of the 'Physician Office Usage of Electronic Health Records Software' report illustrates a significant, timely opportunity to reach out to and educate decision makers in smaller physician offices on the benefits of adopting EHR," said Dave Escalante, Vice President and General Manager of SK&A and OneKey. "The insights available in this report will guide healthcare IT solution vendors and consultants directly to this untapped segment of the market."

Additional findings of the study include EHR adoption rates and growth by software application, site ownership, region, state and practice specialty.

Another ongoing survey by SK&A, entitled "EHR Adoption in Medical Offices: Looking Forward," provides deeper insights for EHR adoption and intent; including timeframes for adoption, buying factors, primary decision makers and awareness of government incentives. Key findings in this survey of 40,000 U.S. medical sites include:

• Most physician offices (72.6 percent) have not yet determined a timeframe for EHR adoption.
• Cost is the most important buying factor for 16.7 percent of physician offices; however, 70.7 percent have indicated no single main buying factor.
• One-fifth (20.8 percent) of physician offices are unaware of EHR government incentives.

SK&A has assumed the leading role in measuring medical office adoption rates of EHR through its comprehensive survey methodology. In February of this year, SK&A was awarded a multiyear contract from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT to track adoption rates and planned usage.

SK&A Announces Survey Results of Drug Sample Acceptance Preferences in U.S. Medical Offices

23 percent of doctors say no to free drug samples offered by the pharmaceutical Industry

Irvine, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/17/2011 -- SK&A, A Cegedim Company, a leading provider of healthcare information solutions and research, today announced the results of a year-long survey to determine physician preferences for accepting drug sample packages provided by pharmaceutical companies.

In pharmaceutical sales, drug sample distribution is one of the highest expenses after labor costs. Drug companies spent $6.5 billion on sample distribution in 2010, or 21 percent of all promotional expenses, according to Cegedim Strategic Data. SK&A's survey results offer insight for understanding the physician specialties that have the highest and lowest drug sample acceptance rates and how individual physicians prefer to receive the sample packages at their practice locations.

The average drug sample acceptance rate among physicians is 77 percent, according to SK&A's telephone survey of 168,834 medical offices representing approximately 480,000 physicians in 56 therapeutic specialties. The majority of physicians (68%) prefer samples to be delivered either in-person by a sales representative or mailed by the manufacturer or distributor, while 27 percent prefer only an in-person visit and 5 percent prefer to receive only by mail.

"This latest profiling information from the SK&A Research Center will be highly useful to pharmaceutical marketing, sales and compliance teams who want to identify the most effective distribution channel to engage their targets and ensure readiness for sample tracking and reporting requirements," said Dave Escalante, Vice President & General Manager of SK&A and OneKey. "The survey results have been appended to the OneKey, Powered by SK&A database of U.S. prescribers and can be segmented by practice specialty, geography, office size, ownership and other targeting variables."

Eight of the 56 physician specialties surveyed had acceptance rates of 90 percent or higher. Among the other insights found in the SK&A research study:
• Allergists/immunologists had the highest sample acceptance rate (96%), followed by ophthalmologists, dermatologists and urologists (92%).
• Sample acceptance rates decreased as medical practice size increased. For example, practice sizes of 3 to 5 doctors had an acceptance rate of 76 percent while practices with 10 to 19 doctors had an acceptance rate of only 54 percent.
• Sample acceptance preferences did not vary from the average based on the ownership of the site or its affiliation with hospitals, an indication that health-system ownership does not necessarily influence decisions made by physicians at the site level.
• The overall sample acceptance rate of 77 percent aligns with the percentage of physicians who agree to see pharmaceutical sales reps, as measured in SK&A's Physician Access study.

The SK&A Research Center will continue to survey medical offices on their drug sample acceptance rates and preferences through 2012, with the next dataset scheduled for release in January 2012. This latest survey is part of SK&A's commitment to enrich the OneKey, Powered by SK&A database with high-value data fields for improved targeting and segmentation.

Other new information selections include Physician Email Preferences, Site Adoption of EHR/EMR, Languages Supported at Site, and Physician Access. Editor's Note: For a copy of the "Drug Sample Acceptance Preferences" report, please contact SK&A Director of Marketing Jack Schember at 800-752-5478 x 1259.

SK&A's Office-Based Physician, Pharmacy and Hospital Databases Pass 15th Consecutive Audit

BPA Worldwide Test Confirms SK&A’s Accuracy in Yearly Audit

Irvine, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/27/2011 -- SK&A, A Cegedim Company, a leading provider of healthcare information solutions and research, today announced the results of BPA Worldwide's February 2011 audit of SK&A primary databases: Office-Based Physician, Pharmacy and Hospital. This audit marks the 15th consecutive year BPA Worldwide has evaluated and approved SK&A's databases for accuracy.

"This 15th successful audit is a testament to our Research Center's dedication to keeping our healthcare databases updated, accurate and deliverable," said Dave Escalante, Vice President and General Manager of SK&A and OneKey. "This achievement serves as a seal of excellence that sets SK&A apart as an information provider, and we look forward to continuing to bring confidence to buyers through this ongoing investment."

The Office-Based Physician database was verified to have 1,218,436 names for decision-maker job titles such as physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, office manager and others. Contacts in the database can be segmented by specialty, geography, office size, hospital affiliation, ownership, Electronic Health Record (EHR) software usage, physician prescribing volume and much more. Based on a test mailing for deliverability administered by BPA Worldwide, the database was found to be 96.8-percent accurate.

There are 238,860 decision makers in the Hospital database, according to the audit, which includes job titles such as medical staff coordinator, director of patient care and nursing, director of medical records, and director of radiology services. These contacts can be targeted by number of beds, parent company (health system), treatment types, hospital specialty and more. The BPA Worldwide test mailing for the Hospital database proved the data be 100-percent accurate.

The Pharmacy database audited showed 172,372 contacts for positions such as staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager, chief pharmacist and more. These contacts can be selected by whether the site is retail or institutional, whether the retail site is part of a chain or independent, number of stores in pharmacy chain, and the pharmacy's primary wholesaler. This database's test mailing by BPA Worldwide also showed the data to be 100-percent accurate.

These primary databases support 12 major industries that sell to the medical community, including pharmaceutical, consulting, medical device, healthcare IT, advertising and insurance. SK&A's databases are continuously telephone-verified and updated by its team of 88 Research Associates at SK&A's Research Center where over 10,000 phone calls are made every business day.

Editor's Note: For copies of the three database audits, please contact SK&A Director of Marketing Jack Schember at 800-752-5478, ext. 1259.

SK&A Releases New Healthcare Email Performance Archive

This free web resource ranks the top email campaign types by percent of emails sent, open rates and click-through rates. Family practitioners receive the most emails.

Irvine, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/21/2010 -- SK&A, A Cegedim Company, today released its new free web resource, the Email Performance Archive (EPA), which allows clients to follow healthcare email-marketing campaign results on a quarterly basis. Delivering more than 1.5 million email records on behalf of clients in the first quarter of 2010, SK&A is now compiling and sharing data based on its campaign deployments to identify email marketing trends.

The Email Performance Archive will rank top campaign types by percent of emails sent, open rates and click-through rates. Physician specialties will be ranked by volume of emails received and open rates. These quarterly reports will provide insight to which campaign types are most often deployed, what physician specialties are most commonly targeted, which campaign types are more likely to be opened and clicked through, and other data references.

SK&A's email deployment product has more than doubled in the past year, growing from 8.4 percent of orders per month during the first quarter of 2009 to 18 percent of orders per month for the 2010 comparable period. This growth parallels the rising popularity of the email channel among marketing professionals. Research firm Veronis Suhler Stevenson projects an 18.7 percent compounded annual growth in email marketing spending between 2008 and 2013. Additionally, Datran Media's "4th Annual Marketing & Media Survey" recently confirmed that email was the strongest-performing advertising channel for 2009. Since June 2009, SK&A has deployed more than 2.1 million email records.

"SK&A's summary of millions of emails shipped represents a major indicator of the email marketing tactics being used to reach prescribers, mid-level practitioners and other healthcare professionals," said Dave Escalante, SK&A Vice President of Data and Information Solutions. "With this intelligence, available for the first time and viewable on the SK&A website, we will provide quarterly trends, analyses and insights that will help our clients improve targeting and plan future marketing programs."

In the first quarter of 2010, product/service announcements, representing more than one million deployed emails, was the leading campaign type. Continuing medical education (CME) webinar invitations and survey campaigns followed in second and third place, respectively. These top-three campaigns accounted for 88 percent of SK&A's email volume in the quarter.

Among physician email records sent, the most targeted specialists were family practitioners. Other popular targets for email messages were internists, oncologists/hematologists, urologists, pediatricians, general surgeons and anesthesiologists. Among medical office staff, office managers, administrators and medical directors were common targets. In the hospital setting, C-level executives, administrators and purchasing directors were common targets for messages.

Other highlights from the first quarter 2010 archive include:

• Campaigns with the best overall open rate: Invitations to webinars
• Campaigns with best overall click-through rate: Subscription offers
• Most popular campaign type targeted to physicians: Product/service announcements (64.5 percent of records)
• Best open rate and click-through rate for campaigns targeted to physicians: Subscription offers
• Day of the week most emails sent: Tuesday
