A Balanced View on Climate Policies to Be Presented at the Portsmouth Conference

“Too often these days, communication in the policy arena gets lost,” said Kevin Fay, Esq., Executive Director of the Alliance for Responsible Atmospheric Policy and Executive Director of the Business Institute for Sustainability. “There are many who feel that effective communication means speaking louder, but rarely does that prove to be successful.”

Hampton, NH -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/13/2018 -- Climate and energy policies often foment some of the strongest political rhetoric and posturing in an increasingly global and connected economy, which rarely allows for a thoughtful discussion on these complex issues.

At The Portsmouth Conference this October in Portsmouth NH, however, Moderator Kevin Fay, Esq, said he looks forward to the opportunity to guide a discussion among some of the world's foremost experts and thinkers.

"Too often these days, communication in the policy arena gets lost," said Fay, Executive Director of the Alliance for Responsible Atmospheric Policy and Executive Director of the Business Institute for Sustainability. "There are many who feel that effective communication means speaking louder, but rarely does that prove to be successful."

In bringing together experts from across the world to discuss policies that relate to climate, including their consequences, The Portsmouth Conference seeks to provide a useful forum for discussion on a complicated subject.

Noting he was intrigued at the invitation to moderate panelist and audience discussions at the conference, Fay said he accepted it with the intent to ensure all views are discussed and considered.

"I won't be driving toward a particular solution or viewpoint," he said. "This issue lends itself to many different approaches."

According to Charles McConnell, Under-Secretary of Energy in the Obama Administration, any approach to climate and/or energy policy must take into account the world's increasing human population.

"In the next 30 years, we will hit 10 billion people," he said. "We need to be cognizant that there are 1.3 billion people that have no energy--and out of the 3 billion we add in the next 30 years, 90% will be in underdeveloped countries."

According to Dr. Mikko Paunio, who holds a cabinet position at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health of Finland, current environmental policies must consider urban sanitary issues.

"Contemporary obsessions to conserve water and energy have had devastating consequences to the world's poor, as improved hygiene is key to control disease and under nutrition," he said.

Fellow conference panelist Florence Reed, Founder of Sustainable Harvest International in Maine and Partner of Regeneration International, will discuss agriculture's role in carbon mitigation. She supports policies that boost regenerative organic farming.

"We don't want to continue to do what we are doing, because what we are doing is not working," she said.

Regardless of anyone's respective viewpoints and/or backgrounds, Fay said looks forward to seeing whether panelists can discover any "common points of understanding."

"If as a result of this conference participants can find merits in the viewpoints of others--whether as allies or opponents--I will feel like we have accomplished a great deal," he said.

Seats are still available at The Portsmouth Conference
Hosted by Citizens Count, a NH-based, non-partisan public information platform with more than 200,000 members, the Portsmouth Conference takes place in Portsmouth, NH on October 18 and 19, 2018.

Experts to Explore Impact of Climate Policies at the Portsmouth Conference

Experts believe energy policies are inadequate.

Hampton, NH -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/23/2018 -- While the notion of sustainability is often advanced by those who develop energy policies designed to protect the world's ecosystem, some experts believe the effort is falling short.

"Pollution is not, unlike environmentalists claim, something that is coming from factories, high chimneys of power production, or excessive use of chemicals," said Mikko Paunio, MD, MHS, Adjunct Professor in General Epidemiology at the University of Helsinki.

Currently holding a cabinet position (Medical Counselor) at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health of Finland in the area of environmental health, Paunio said energy policies around the world fail to address a key issue.

"The problem is the inability of the poor to consume clean energy," he said.

He cited one report in which health officials estimate smoke from wood, dung or charcoal fires used by 3 billion people in villages across Africa, Central America and Asia shortens millions of lives every year.

Chairman of both the German Wildlife Trust and supervisory board of Aurubis, the largest copper producer in Europe, Dr. Fritz Vahrenholt said many energy policies have unintended consequences.

"As Managing Director of the German Wildlife Trust, I have to deal with the conflicts between renewable energies, namely wind-turbines and biomass utilization, with endangered species like birds of prey or protected bats," he said.

At The Portsmouth Conference on October 18 and 19, 2018 in Portsmouth, NH, Paunio and Vahrenholt will join other leading thinkers from across the world to discuss these and other issues related to climate policy.

Avoiding the science behind climate change, the international conference seeks to provide a platform for a thoughtful dialogue between leading thinkers and experts before an audience of decision leaders from across the world. At the conference, a wide array of subjects will be up for discussion, including investment strategies, energy considerations in the first and third worlds and more.

"Current energy policy is just one example of the impact legislation is having on the global economy," said Dr. Geoff Weiss, conference Board of Director and Emeritus Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at the University of Virginia Health System. "This conference will explore diverse viewpoints on the payoffs and trade-offs that result from climate policy-making."

For speakers at the conference, the opportunity to engage in a constructive dialogue with others on the subject of policy-making related to climate is long overdue.

"Too often, just images of good and bad--not knowledge--dictate policy and tend to divide people," Paunio said.

Climate Policies Affecting Industry in Key Sectors Across the World

According to leading experts both in Europe and the US, some current climate policies are handicapping key sectors of industry worldwide.

Hampton, NH -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/14/2018 -- In Europe, Dr. Benny Peiser, Director of London-based Global Warming Policy Forum, said governments have burdened their countries with "hugely expensive climate policies."

"As a direct result, energy prices and fuel poverty are rising in many countries, making them poorer and less competitive," he said. "I campaign for cost-effective alternatives that will help to make our societies more resilient to climate impacts and more competitive internationally."

According to Peiser, his concern is not climate science, but the legislation that surrounds it.

"A return to pragmatic climate and energy policies will require a sober and detached consideration of all relevant evidence," he said.

On October 18 and 19, Peiser will join nearly a dozen other leading international experts at The Portsmouth Conference in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to discuss climate policy consequences.

Hosted by Citizens Count, a non-partisan public information platform with a community of more than 200,000, the conference will provide a platform for discussion on the policies and initiatives associated with climate rather than the science behind it.

"I hope that the Portsmouth Conference will set a precedent for an open and civil dialogue that helps participants to better understand and respect those who have come to suggest different climate policy choices," said Peiser. "The climate debate has been too polarized--not just in the U.S., but in many other nations, too."

Charles McConnell, Executive Director of Rice University's Energy and Environment Initiative in Texas and Under-Secretary of Energy in the Obama Administration, agrees and cited the potential impact of climate policies on global industries as one reason why he is attending The Portsmouth Conference.

"Policy choices can influence not only technology development and pursuits, but also fundamental economics and markets," he said. "Policy shaped by technology and the linkage between the two is fundamental to success…I'm looking forward to the transparency of policy choices and their impacts at the conference."

The Portsmouth Conference will take place at the historic Wentworth by the Sea Hotel & Spa, which hosted the Portsmouth Peace Treaty participants in 1905. The treaty earned President Theodore Roosevelt the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize.
