The Spaniard was flawless as he carded an impressive 66 yesterday but hit trouble early in his second round with a double bogey on the par three third.

Further dropped shots on the seventh and ninth saw him fall to four over for his round, before a birdie at the 11th saw him recover slightly to sit in a share of fourth midway through his second round two under overall.

The US Open champion and Ryder Cup winner birdied the first and parred through to the fourth, leaving him one under for his round and four under overall.

That gave him a one-stroke cushion from fellow Northern Irishman Gareth Maybin, one under through eight, and Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen, two under through 12.

Ryder Cup stars Miguel Angel Jimenez and Francesco Molinari were among those alongside Larrazabal on two under for the tournament, while their vice-captain at Celtic Manor, Sergio Garcia, slipped to one over thanks in part to a double bogey at the fifth.

Attempting to claim the world number one spot, Martin Kaymer cancelled out yesterday struggles as he moved level overall.

The German needs to win or share second place with no more than one other player if he, rather than the absent Lee Westwood, is to succeed Tiger Woods in top spot when the Americans 281 week occupancy ends on Monday.

He was one over yesterday but a birdie at the fourth put him four strokes off the lead. Golf Hospitality and Golf Tickets are available at Corporate Hospitality Group.
Golf: Tiger Woods Starts With a Struggle

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/07/2010 -- Tiger Woods spent most of the back nine first four holes at the Deutsche Bank Championship muttering. Tiger, Woods repeated after coming up short on a birdie putt on the par-4, 461-yard 12th hole.

On the next hole, another long par 4, his woes continued; this time, he hooked his tee shot way left, toward the fans behind the ropes, and followed up on his second shot by landing his ball over the back of the green. He was able to make par, though, with a beautifully placed chip shot three feet to the left of the pin.

And the blade was not exactly cooperating either. There were no three-putts on the day, but 11 two putts at times when he needed the birdie, he was often pushing the ball just short or too long, sometimes wide.

This act of saving oneself from the edge manifested itself all afternoon. Woods finished tied for 87th at 1 over par, but was miserable off the tee all afternoon as the conditions grew soggier, so too, it seemed, did his drives. He averaged 290 yards off the tee, but landed on just two fairways on the front nine, and six of 14 in total.

I saw him step away from three putts, said 17 year old Ashland resident Ryan Kennedy at the first hole. He does not look as confident today. He does not seem to have that air of confidence we have seen from him before.

I just did not have it today, Woods said. Just did not really doing what I was supposed to be doing out there swing wise, and then was not releasing the putter blade out there and was dragging it a little bit. It was a bad day all around.

Kennedy was here with his pal Sam Bronstein, his co captain on this year golf team at Ashland High, and the two sprinted from spot to spot with each shot Woods took. Bronstein, at that moment, pulled a divot out of his pocket giddily. This is from his shot on the 13th, he said, beaming.

You have just got to battle back, he added. I tried to stay focused on what I was doing out there, and I got it back a little bit. I felt I could have got a couple more out of it, actually.

Great job, Tiger someone screamed as Tiger finished up par for the fifth hole, walking to the next tee.

Bath's Lewis Moody Will Be a Major Threat, Andy Key Leeds Director of Rugby

London, England-- (SBWIRE) -- 09/06/2010 -- Leeds Carnegie director of rugby Andy Key believes former Leicester Tigers colleague Lewis Moody will be a major threat to his club interests when he makes his full debut with new side Bath in Yorkshire on Sunday.

I am sure only Lewis and those closest to him know how tough a decision it was for him to walk away from Leicester after so many years there, said Key, a former Tigers player and coach.

Key is certain that Moody move from Welford Road to the Recreation Ground will galvanise the career of the England flanker who spent 14 years at Leicester before switching to their Premiership rivals.

Having said that, the career of a professional sportsman is a short one and they have to make the right decisions for themselves and their families.

Leicester is all he has known since becoming a professional rugby player and I do not think anyone should underestimate how tough a decision it will have been for him to leave Welford Road.

Coincidentally we finished last season against the same opponents so it is funny that we meet again on the opening day, Key added.

The fresh challenge of a new environment is one that often rejuvenates a player and gives them a new outlook on their playing career. I am sure he will be a major threat to us on Sunday.

I think Sunday will be a much different game. We had secured our place in the Premiership with the win over Worcester in the previous game and only had pride to play at the Recreation Ground. In contrast, Bath we are on a fantastic run of form and needed a win to secure a playoff spot.

We are all hugely excited about the start of the new season and continuing the progress we made last season, said Key.

We have recruited wisely in the close season to strengthen our squad with eleven new faces coming in, of which four of them we see as development players for the future.

It appears that everyone has had to make adjustments to their squads for the new season and that should produce some exciting rugby this campaign.

Taylor Welcome to Return to Scotland Duty

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/26/2010 -- Coach Andy Robinson admitted the door is still open for versatile forward Simon Taylor to return to an injury ravaged Scotland squad.

Robinson is overseeing a training camp in St Andrews this week with 15 players unable to fully participate whether through long-term injury or niggles picked up from the bruising 2 series win over Argentina.

And with options short on the ground Robinson admits Taylor, who last featured during the 2009 RBS 6 Nations, would be a welcome addition to the squad.
But he maintains the loose forward, who joined Bath this summer from Stade Francais, would have to make the first move.

Simon is enjoying his rugby, but it is not down to me whether he plays international rugby again, it is down to him. If a player puts himself forward to play then he is up for consideration.

A lot of players have not recovered from Argentina, but we just have to be cautious and not try to force any issues.

The next 10 weeks is about understanding the plans and putting together those plans. The purpose of these three days is to prepare the players for a number of the plans that we want to introduce.

There is an understanding of the performances they put in and that through the hard work they put in they achieved the results. It is a confident squad, but it is not getting carried away with itself.

They understand that every time Scotland go into battle the players have to be at their very best.

Tiger Woods Doesn't Deserve to Be on US Ryder Cup Team

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/26/2010 -- There was a time we watched Tiger Woods dominate golf like few athletes have done in any sport. Now we watch to see how badly he will play and how far his fall from the top will be.

For that reason, Woods, despite precariously holding on as the No. 1 ranked player in the world should not be on the US Ryder Cup team.

We all know he will be US captain Corey Pavin already has made the decision that Woods will be one of his four wild-card selections, although he won't make it official until Sept. 7.

Pavin says Woods is high on his list of candidates as a pick, but you dont have to read between the lines on this one to know it is a done deal: Woods will be at Celtic Manor in Wales to face Colin Montgomerie is European squad Oct. 1-3.

He should not be. While he may have posted top-5 performances in the first two majors of this season, he does not deserve consideration for the Ryder Cup.

Woods is game has slipped so much in his year of personal strife in the wake of the sex scandal that has left his marriage and family life in ruins that the only cause Pavin would have for wanting him is pure desperation.

You do not have to be a psychologist or psychiatrist to see how much all that is happened off the golf course has affected Woods is play on it. It is evident in every errant drive, each missed approach shot and bad putt. It is in his body language and every pained expression etched on his face.

The eight players who have qualified on points for the U.S. are Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar. Of them, Overton and Kuchar have not won on the PGA Tour this season, and Watson and Johnson made the team on the strength of their play at last week's PGA Championship. Watson, Johnson, Overton and Kuchar also are Ryder Cup rookies.

Cricket: Test Batsmen Cannot Be Judged by Run-Scoring Alone

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/19/2010 -- There is an interesting comparison to be made between Mohammad Yousuf and Alastair Cook, two batsmen who will be starting the third Test under intense pressure.

They will be judged largely on how many runs they score, but I suspect that both have been picked partly because of other considerations. There are aspects of team selection that some pundits and members of the public do not appreciate.

The selectors have clearly laid down their cards; he is the man who will open the batting in Australia. With only one Test to play after this, they have run out of time to try an alternative opening combination. They will be hoping that their show of faith will help him through the slump. His place for the winter looks safe. That will lift any worries he may have had about losing his place and allow him to concentrate on improving his game.

Cricket Hospitality
http://www.corporatehospitalitygroup.com/Cricket-Hospitality/

Also, the coaches must identify the cause, not just the problem. Often the root of a flaw is a long way away from where the error is actually being made.

When Pakistan last toured England in 2006, Cook felt he was having trouble playing spin bowling. I noticed that his hands were too high on the handle. The bat was too whippy and that made it hard to stop when playing defensively. That explained why he seemed to play with hard hands against spin bowling. He felt more comfortable and in control after making that tweak.

England need Cook to recover. The fact that he was chosen to captain the side in Andrew Strauss's absence in Bangladesh this winter shows he has qualities as a man-manager and suggests he works well with the other senior figures in the set-up.

Cook is a player who will always be fighting his own technique because the biomechanics of it are so unnatural. That means coaches must be very careful how they handle him. He does not have a conventional technique and it is crucial that any alterations made accommodate that unconventionality rather than eliminate it. There is no point trying to convert his method wholesale into something that looks more like what you might find on the pages of a coaching manual. Do that and you risk throwing his whole game out of kilter. And it is important only to change one link in a batsman's technique at a time; it means you can track what is having a good effect and what is not.

In all team sports the most successful sides have units of leaders who work together for the team cause. That may be why England's selectors are so keen to keep Cook in the team. That is also the area where Pakistan need Yousuf to contribute. If you have leaders who are working against each other then you end up with absolute chaos. This is what Pakistan have suffered from in the past. Both men need big innings, but neither should be judged by runs alone.

Football Hospitality at Corporate Hospitality Group

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/17/2010 -- Tommy Smith is reportedly in line to become Rangers first new signing of the summer, becoming the first player to join the club on a permanent basis in two years.

Coach Ian Durrant revealed on Tuesday the SPL champions had lodged two offers for unnamed players, as negotiations also continue to bring Rapid Vienna Nikica Jelavic in.

Smith, who Rangers previously had an offer rejected for by the Championship side, now appears to be one of the names in the frame. The 30-year-old, who can play up front or on the right wing.

The one-time England Under-21 international enjoyed the best years of his career with Watford, playing for the Hornets in two spells from 1997 to 2003 and 2006 to 2009. Having started as a youngster at Vicarage Road, Smith made a total of 286 appearances, scoring 64 times.

Smith also spent a season with Sunderland and two with Derby County in between his time with Watford, before moving to Portsmouth for £1.8 million in August 2009. He played 18 times, scoring once, as the south coast club were relegated from the top flight and was also in their team for their opening Championship game against Coventry at the weekend.

As for Jelavic, there has still been no resolution on the players wrangle for a pay-off from Rapid before he completes his move to Scotland. The Croatian is also on international duty, where he will be part of Slaven Bilics team to play Slovakia in Bratislava on Wednesday night.

Another forward option for Gers boss Walter Smith could be Arsenal youngster Nacer Barazite, who played 80 minutes of a 2-1 friendly loss at Glentoran for a young Light Blues side on Tuesday night.

The Dutch player, who can play on either flank or up front, looked impressive and could be set for a season-long loan deal at Ibrox, as Arsene Wenger looks to give him further first team experience.

Tiger Woods Is Playing It Straight This Tme After Promising First Round at Whistling Straits

London, England-- (SBWIRE) -- 08/17/2010 -- No prizes for guessing who was at the centre of attention when the fog lifted at the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits yesterday to reveal a clear-thinking Tiger Woods.

After the lengthy three hour delay, he wasted no time in demonstrating that last weeks malaise at the Bridgestone Invitational was not terminal.

Replacing the wild man off the tee was a figure of relative precision; where seven days ago there was only uncertainty on the greens, there was now a measure of conviction.

Woods posted a 71 that left him just three shots behind fellow American Bubba Watson and Italian Ryder Cup hopeful Francesco Molinari.

After working with caddie Steve Williams and Justin Roses coach Sean Foley on keeping his head still during his swing, Woods had been hitting it well in practice.

It is, of course, quite another thing to take it on to the first tee. No wonder there was a particularly warm handshake from Williams at the finish, for he knew better than anyone that this represented a considerable step up from the worst performance of Woods professional career last week.

Just like then, he leads after day one, only this time he has company in the form of the personable Molinari. No-one would be surprised to see both of them at the Ryder Cup.

For Molinari, something would have to go terribly wrong for him not to make it, while Watson endeared himself to many of his countrymen by revealing the only thing he's interested in this season is playing at Celtic Manor.

Scot Martin Laird plies his trade on the U.S Tour and had his first top ten finish last week since the start of the season.

He continued in similar vein with a fine 70, while fellow countryman Stephen Gallacher, who is now putting together the sort of consistent results commensurate with his talent, dug deep after an early double bogey to card a useful 71.

What crowds gathered on the 10th tee to watch Woods. Perhaps it was fortunate that this is a short part four, and so Woods could leave his ever-troublesome driver sheathed at the start.

Now came a bigger test, on the monstrously long par five 11th. For all its length, a good tee shot gives a big hitter the chance to go for the green, and Woods struck a beauty.

No rocking and rolling his head on this one. On the green, another good putt was holed for a second birdie, while at the 12th he saved par.

Among the early British and Irish finishers, Brian Davis shot 71 while fellow Englishmen Paul Casey and Luke Donald had to settle for 72s, as did Ian Poulter, who recovered well following an early triple bogey.

'I think it would have been very harsh if I had not finished under par given how well I played, he said.

Rugby: Edinburgh Coach Backing Star Man to Bounce Back

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/27/2010 -- Rugby coach Rob Moffat is backing comeback man Chris Paterson to extend his Scottish record 100 caps as he continues to recover from a split kidney sustained in last seasons RBS Six Nations Championship.

Fears existed in some quarters over Patersons future when he was taken to hospital suffering severe internal damage during the Test with Wales in Cardiff. He hasnt played since.

But with Edinburgh back in pre-season training Moffat has been ableto monitor Paterson pictured, from close quarters and is quick to dispel concerns while acknowledging the extent of the damage sustained.

I'm sure there are more international appearances and another World Cup left in him I know he wants those challenges

One side effect of Patersons trauma, according to Moffat, is that he has been around the club passing on advice and generally inspiring young players when he would otherwise have been in Argentina with the Scotland squad.

The younger players have been able to learn from somebody who got a really bad injury which in some ways didnt register with followers to the extent it might have, had poor Thom Evans not suffered a horrible career-ending injury in the same match.

While Ally Hogg and Jim Hamilton have moved to English clubs, Moffat has seen that trend reversed by bringing in Alex Grove on loan from relegated Worcester.

But the Edinburgh coach appears to be keeping options open regarding making Groves switch permanent in giving a vote of confidence to a young centre who has had a wretched time, injury wise.

Until he goes back Alex will give us good quality cover in a position where we also have the likes of Ben Cairns and Nick De Luca (both Scotland caps) while Andrew Easson will be looking to re-establish himself.

Easson hasnt played for Edinburgh since September 2008 and, on the brink of a return last season, sustained knee problems.

Utility back King is one of several arrivals from the club-scene that has long been championed by Moffat but perhaps more than ever nowadays. At Edinburgh we watch closely what is happening in the clubs as shown by the fact we have also signed Lee Jones from Selkirk.

Further back Jim Thompson, John Houston and Mark Robertson are examples of players who earned their contracts in the Premiership and I am sure the trend will continue.

In fact, the British and Irish Cup has been an innovation that will strength links even more improving the quality of our recruits.

Graham Lowe takes a lot of credit for improving relations between the pro-teams and the club sides and the B & I Cup has created something new to aim at.

To back up those remarks Moffat has revealed that a training camp at St Andrews next month will see Edinburgh undertake training sessions alongside players from locally-based Howe of Fife, Kirkcaldy and Dundee High.

Tearaway Currie hooker Alun Walker is among nine players who have been attached to Edinburgh Rugby for regular training as elite development players this season.

Andy Powell Handed One Year Deal at Wasps After Being Shown the Door at Cardiff

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/27/2010 -- Wales international Andy Powell has joined Wasps on an initial one-year contract after an acrimonious end to his Cardiff Blues career.

The British and Irish Lion was released by the Blues, who accused the 28-year-old of losing his way as they tore up his contract with two years left to run.

Wasps wasted no time in making their move for the back-row forward, with director of rugby Tony Hanks insisting he had no doubts about the players state of mind.

We are delighted to announce that Andy Powell, a hugely talented and highly regarded international back-row forward, joins Wasps ahead of the new season, he said.

Andy makes his move from Cardiff based on his desire to drive both his club and international career and whilst his rugby ability is obvious, the Wasps coaching team have all warmed to Andy immediately and are impressed by his drive and enthusiasm to relocate to London and join Wasps.

Just hours after helping Wales complete a stunning comeback victory against Scotland, he was arrested for and admitted to driving a golf buggy on the M4 while drunk.
Wales coach Warren Gatland recalled him for last month's tour to New Zealand, but his hopes of participating in the Tests were ended by a thigh problem.

I am extremely excited to be joining London Wasps he said. My decision was a pure rugby decision. After all the talk and speculation about where I will be playing, all I want to do now is get my head down, improve as a player and hopefully, if selected, play in the World Cup next year for my country.

I know Shaun Edwards well of course from my time with the Welsh team, and I took little persuading once I met with Tony Hanks and Trevor Woodman about how serious this team is about success and winning.

This is a good fit for both Andy and Wasps - we want to give him the platform, on the back of good club performances, to play at the highest level possible and Andy is committed to developing his game and ensuring success for Wasps in 2010/11.

The club have indicated that the move to bring Powell to Adams Park concludes their transfer dealings for this summer.

London Wasps Complete Signing of Andy Powell from Cardiff Blues

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/27/2010 -- London Wasps have announced that Andy Powell, the Wales back row forward, has joined the club on a one-year deal from Cardiff Blues.

Powell has switched clubs after being released by the Blues on Monday following five years at the Arms Park club.

Powell, who had also been linked to French Top 14 club Agen and to rugby league side Crusaders, had been unsettled at the Blues since he was axed from Wales Six Nations squad for his much-publicised golf buggy indiscretion following the victory over Scotland last February.

Cardiff director of rugby Dai Young said on Monday that Powell was mixed up and disillusioned with everything at the moment.

However, the 28 year-old is confident that his move to Wasps, where he will link up with Wales head coach Shaun Edwards, will refocus his international career ahead of the World Cup in New Zealand next year.

My decision was a pure rugby decision, Powell said. After all the talk and speculation about where I will be playing, all I want to do now is get my head down, improve as a player and hopefully if selected, play in the World Cup next year for my country.

To do that I need to be playing well for my club, and I think with the coaching team and setup here at Wasps, I will have the perfect opportunity to do that. I know Shaun Edwards well of course from my time with the Welsh team, and I took little persuading once I met with Tony Hanks and Trevor Woodman about how serious this team is about success and winning.

Wasps have pulled together a great squad, with some great coaches and I think this is an environment in which I will thrive as a player and I hope to do my part to help bring success and trophies to Wasps.

Wasps director of rugby Tony Hanks predicted Powell, who has won 14 caps for Wales and previously had stints with the Scarlets, Newport, Beziers and Leicester Tigers, would become a favourite with the clubs supporters.

Andy makes his move from Cardiff based on his desire to drive both his club and international career and whilst his rugby ability is obvious, the Wasps coaching team have all warmed to Andy immediately and are impressed by his drive and enthusiasm to relocate to London and join Wasps,Hanks said.

Andy is the first high profile Welsh signing at the club since Rob Howley and we are confident he will benefit from the environment and Wasps way in a similar fashion and become a favourite with the Wasps faithful.

He will be a welcome addition to the squad and is held in high regard by people in the game that we at Wasps trust and respect none more so than Wasps Lions players who played alongside him and forged friendships with him in South Africa in 2009.
Wasps have announced that Powell had signed a one-year contract to join the English Premiership club, ending a five-year association with Cardiff, where he won all of his 14 caps for Wales.
Burton, however, claimed that Powell owed him more than £20,000 in outstanding fees and that Cardiff would not release him from his contract, which had a year to run, until the issue was resolved.

Emanuele Palladino, Powell's new agent, said that he never discussed the contractual arrangements of his players. But a Cardiff official confirmed that the transfer documents had not yet been completed.

"It is a matter for both agents to resolve and that will hopefully be done in the next couple of days," he said.

Wasps, however, insisted that Powell had signed for them. "As far as the club is concerned Andy is a Wasps player and we look forward to him being a part of our squad next season," a spokesman said.

Powell had been unsettled at Cardiff since he was dropped from Wales's Six Nations squad, after being arrested for driving a golf buggy on the M4 while drunk in the aftermath of the victory over Scotland last February.

Australia have confirmed they will play the Premiership champions, Leicester, at Welford Road on Nov 9 during their autumn tour of the UK.

Wasps Sign Wales and Lions Flanker Andy Powell from Cardiff Blues

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/27/2010 -- Wasps will announce the signing of the Wales and Lions back-row Andy Powell, who has been released by the Cardiff Blues despite having a year of his contract to run.

The Welsh region felt the 28-year-old had lost his way after he was suspended from the national squad during last season's Six Nations, having been charged with drink-driving in a golf buggy taken from the team hotel.

Powell will join his sixth club, after stints with Newport, Leicester, Beziers, the Scarlets and the Blues. The Wasps head coach, Shaun Edwards, is Wales defence coach and Powell, who had been linked with a switch to rugby league with Crusaders, has forged a close affinity with the national head coach, Warren Gatland, who had urged him to stay in contention for a place in next year's World Cup squad.

With no openings in any of the other three regions in Wales, Powell's options were limited. He was offered a contract by Agen but the move to Wasps, while going against Gatland's preference of having his players based in Wales, will keep him in the coach's eye.

The Blues, resigned to losing Powell, were looking for a transfer fee of at least £10,000. He had spent five years with them, his longest stay with one team.
"Andy had a difficult season following the unwise incident with the golf buggy and he lost his way somewhat," said the Blues' head coach, David Young. "Both parties felt it was in their best interests if we parted company."

Wasps, who count Gatland among their former directors of rugby, have long regarded themselves as a refuge for lost souls, happy to take on players who have a reputation for being difficult. Powell has had two coaching mentors in his career: the South African, Ian McIntosh, when he started out with Newport and Gatland, who have the forward his first cap in November 2008.

Darren Clarke to Be Named Ryder Cup Vice-Captain

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/23/2010 -- Darren Clarke, one of the most inspirational figures in recent Ryder Cup history, is set to be revealed today as vice-captain of Europe's team to face the United States in Wales in October. Sources said last night that Europe's captain, Colin Montgomerie, will announce the Irishman's appointment at Wentworth today, along with that of Paul McGinley and Thomas Bjorn.

The three men all stalwarts of past Ryder Cup glories will form one of the most experienced backroom staffs of any recent European team. But it is the selection of Clarke that will catch the eye. It is believed he was approached to join Montgomerie's team during the Open at St Andrews, days after finishing as runner-up in the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.

A veteran of five Ryder Cup contests, he has been on the winning side four times and along with Lee Westwood formed one of the most formidable pairings to carry the European colours. But Clarke is most fondly remembered for his performance at the K Club in 2006 where, only weeks after the death of his wife, Heather, he won three points from three matches.

Few who were there will ever forget his opening shot of that week a 340-yard drive straight down the middle that led to a birdie and, ultimately, to yet another victory for the Clarke-Westwood pairing.

Disappointment followed in 2008 as he was passed over by Nick Faldo when it came to his wildcard picks. Clarke's absence from the team room was felt, not least by Westwood, as the European side fell to defeat against Paul Azinger's American squad in Kentucky.

As recently as last month Clarke had expressed hopes of being selected by Montgomerie as a player but if, as expected, he is unveiled as a vice-captain it would seem he has decided to move on to the next phase of a storied Ryder Cup career.

Rugby Football League Appoints Bev Risman As President

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/15/2010 -- Bev Risman has been appointed president of the Rugby Football League, making history on at least two levels. Risman is thought to be the first elected to the post who does not represent a professional club on the Rugby League Council, and is the first president to have played fly-half for the England rugby union team.

Risman's election completes a remarkable story for his family which began when his father, Gus, left Wales for Salford in 1929, and went on to become one of the best and most celebrated players in the history of the game. Bev added to that legend with his dual code success as a player, and has since played significant roles in the development of the game in London and as director of the thriving Student Rugby League, and his younger brother John also continues to make an impact as president of the Scotland Rugby League and as a key figure in the code's recent development in eastern Europe.

The RFL president's role is mostly ceremonial and Risman will take his chains of office to Australia and New Zealand on a trip to follow this autumn's Four Nations series that he was planning to make anyway. But he also hopes to make a practical impact, particularly in encouraging former players of his and younger generations to resume or retain their involvement with the sport.

"I shall be making myself available to offer whatever support I can to the two main rugby league charities the Foundation and the Benevolent Fund," he added. "But I am also keen to see whether we can develop something to help fill the void that has been left by the recent changes in the British Lions Association, maybe by combining the ex-players' associations of all the professional clubs as well as internationals and even amateurs." Phil Clarke, the former Wigan and Great Britain forward who now works as a pundit for Sky, is working closely with Risman.

After four decades of active involvement with the game since he turned professional with Leigh in the early 1960s, Risman believes he has taken the presidency at a good time. "The eight years or so since Richard Lewis and Nigel Wood introduced a new regime at the RFL have been an outstanding success, putting the game back on its feet financially and restructuring the playing side of things," he said. "We are seen as the leaders in the field in terms of innovation, with lots of other sports taking their lead from us, and I think the increasing likelihood of amateur rugby league including youngsters switching to a summer season will be another significant step forward.

"Obviously the Super League continues to rely on Mr Murdoch's financial support, but hopefully his company will remain supportive and we can continue to thrive."

Brilliant Starspangledbanner Claims Victory in July Cup but Johnny Murtagh Landed With Ban

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/14/2010 -- Jockey Johnny Murtagh Group One celebrations turned sour as victory on Starspangledbanner in the July Cup came with a six-day ban that forces him out of the King George at Ascot and the first two days of Glorious Goodwood.

Murtagh was suspended for a careless shift early on that sparked interference on his way to landing the race by a neck over Equiano.

The jockey was due to ride Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco in the King George later this month English Derby hero Workforce.

At least Murtagh has the prospect of unexpectedly still riding Starspangledbanner to perk him up as discussions to extend the sprintes career continued on Friday night.

When his Coolmore Stud owners purchased their 2-1 winner from Australia, the plan was to briefly race here to increase worldwide stallion appeal.

But, after adding to his Golden Jubilee success, you sense that even an operation as richly-endowed with talent as Coolmore cant quite believe what they have got their hands on.

To take part in the Australian breeding season, Starspangledbanner needed to go into quarantine at midnight on Friday night.

But a shot at the Coolmore-sponsored Nunthorpe Stakes at York looked too tempting to ignore, plus the seasons remaining big speed tests. The situation is complicated as he already has 150 mares booked at $A30,000, but negotiation is the lubricant of the bloodstock world.

Brien, who had won the July Cup twice before with Mozart (2001) and Stravinsky

(1999), said: He is an incredible horse. The first day he worked, the fractions were so quick we had to go back and check his races in Australia. He was so fast, I could not believe he had won over a mile.

Rugby: Smit's More Interested in the Job at Hand

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/12/2010 -- World champions South Africa kept their unpredictable coach and more stable test lineup under wraps as they began preparations for Saturday night's opening Tri-Nations test.

Peter de Villiers and legendary captain John Smit were initially slated to front an Auckland press conference where the team would be revealed but instead only Smit - who had woken just an hour earlier - fronted a large media contingent at their hotel.

Minor injuries to veteran lock Bakkies Botha and one of his replacement options, utility Danie Rossouw, were given as reasons for delaying the naming of the team until tomorrow.

The Springboks dominated the All Blacks last year and open their defence of the Tri-Nations with consecutive matches in Auckland and Wellington.

De Villiers, who revels in sometimes bizarre verbal exchanges, has already hit the headlines by claiming both he and All Blacks coach Graham Henry have "big mouths".

Smit was in no mood to join the banter and in a typical press conference interview, with the topics bouncing all over the place, said the Springboks were delighted with the way new players had performed in tests away to Wales, and at home against France and Italy.

Among this squad, backs Gio Aplon and Juan de Jongh, and loose forward Francois Louw, made their test debuts this year.

"It was an interesting dynamic for us losing Heinrich Brussow early in the Super 14, scratching and thinking about who on earth was going to replace the kind of work he did last year," said Smit.

"All of a sudden, a guy like Francois Louw steps up. He's played four tests and got three players' man-of-the-match awards. It just shows how the culture of the team helps someone who has got the potential to play well to fit in straight away.

Buy England V South Africa hospitality packages at official Corporate Hospitality Group.

"We've got a few more new faces. Last year, there were very few guys brought into the system ... this year in the first two tests alone we brought in five new faces and not one of them has disappointed."

Smit gave a two-edged answer on the importance of Saturday's match in terms of gaining an advantage for the World Cup next year. "To become too wrapped up in the World Cup at this stage would be foolish," he said.

"We haven't had too much success at Eden Park. Whether we get it right or wrong, lessons will be learnt either way that will help us at next year's World Cup."

On the All Blacks, Smit said: "They have won the Tri-Nations most out of all of us and not winning it will really irritate them. They are going to rock up worked up and ready to go on Saturday.

Henry the Most, and Least, Successful All Black Coach

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/12/2010 -- Those infamous words may always come back to haunt Graham Henry. Throughout the duration of his first tenure in charge of the All Blacks from 2004 until 2007 Henry's mantra was "judge me on the World Cup."

Had he not uttered those words, we would surely have to rate Henry as one of the most, if not the most, successful All Blacks coaches of all time.

His record is simply phenomenal: 68 wins from 80 test matches gives the sterly Aucklander a winning percentage of 85 percent, behind only Alex Wyllie and Fred Allen, who coached the national side just 29 times and 14 times respectively.

However, using Henry's own criteria, we could not possibly put him in the top echelon.

Assuming success at the 2007 World Cup to Henry meant lifting the cup, Henry fell well short of this mark. Shorter, in fact, than any of his predecessors.

So, here we are. An All Blacks coach with four Tri-Nations titles in six years, a six-year hold on the Bledisloe Cup, two grand slams from two attempts, and not a single loss in the northern hemisphere, who is, by his own admission, a failure.

First and foremost, he has repaired a damaged relationship between the All Blacks and the New Zealand rugby public. Following the John Mitchell era, which left many fans disillusioned and feeling alienated from their national rugby side, Henry began a conscious, albeit transparent, campaign to restore the All Blacks' image in the public eye.

He made himself open to media, answered questions bluntly, carried himself well, and involved the players with the public small measures, but significant in the circumstances.

The Probables v Possibles trial was re-introduced. It was a meaningless game, with no players from Super 14 finalists the Hurricanes and Crusaders taking part. But it is a tradition entrenched in the national game, and its one-off return was another sensible and well-received move from Henry.

His opening two test matches against England did nothing to harm his or the team's image: the attractive brand of rugby played in two heavy defeats of England on home soil gaining most attention.

But it is worth remembering the attacking team Henry was in charge of upon his appointment was a team largely blooded by Mitchell.

After piling up massive scores against Italy, Portugal, Scotland and Romania, the All Blacks froze against their bogey team, France, a team they had decimated twice earlier in the year at home.

With a quarter-final exit, most accepted Henry would quietly resign from the top job, take it on the chin, realise he had not succeeded in his quest, and make way for his successor.

People deserve second chances. But Henry had four years to take his side to World Cup success, Mitchell had two. Mitchell was sacked, Henry was given another four.

Furthermore, although Mitchell frequently stated he was on a journey towards the World Cup, he never stated it was the be-all and end-all, unlike Henry who explicitly stated the holy grail was all that mattered.

If the All Blacks once again fail to lift the game's greatest prize, Henry will not only be remembered as the coach who lead the All Blacks to their worst ever world cup result, but also as the only coach to be in charge of two unsuccessful world cup campaigns.
