Campus Eye Center Encourages Importance of Eye Exams for Children

Lancaster County , PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/15/2019 -- Campus Eye Center, a leader of eye care in Lancaster County, recently released a blog post on the importance of eye care for children and why you should schedule a child's first eye exam.

With 5 to 10 percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children having vision problems, Campus Eye Center stresses the importance of checking if your child has a vision problem as early as possible. Eye disorders such as refractive errors (the need for glasses), amblyopia (lazy eye), and strabismus (eye turn) are common among children and can be manageable if caught early.

According to the American Optometric Association, "infants should have their first complete eye examination at 6 months of age." As they grow, children should have additional exams at age 3, as well as just before they enter first grade. Eighty percent of a child's learning is visually based, so untreated issues could potentially impair a child's ability to reach their full academic potential. Identifying any problems early can help avoid childhood vision problems or permanent vision loss in the future.

"Most children are not able to differentiate between clear and poor vision," says Practice Manager, Peter Murdock. "Scheduling an appointment with us today is important for your child's future health."
