New York City Job Losses Lower Than Expected, Newyorkcrossing Finds 102,000 Jobs

James Brown, principal economist of the state’s Labor Department has also said that the city lost fewer jobs than during the recession and regained them faster than previous estimates.

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/17/2011 -- New York City has fared better in the recession than previously thought, as revised jobs data from the state's Labor Department shows.

The city's unemployment rate in January 2011 was 8.9 percent. The rate was 10 percent in January 2010. According to Barbara Byrne Denham, an economist with a real estate investment firm, the city lost around 141,000 jobs since April 2008. This is below the previous estimate of 179,000 jobs that the city was supposed to have lost.

James Brown, principal economist of the state's Labor Department has also said that the city lost fewer jobs than during the recession and regained them faster than previous estimates. He also estimates that since the economic recovery began, the city has regained around 50,000 jobs, about 90,000 short of the prerecession employment figure.

The main sectors which have created most of the new jobs are the hospitality industry (restaurants and bars), education, and healthcare. Most of the job losses were concentrated in the state and local government offices. The private sector in New York City hired 53,000 workers in the 12-month period ending in January 2011.

NewYorkCrossing, a job aggregator site, has been tracking all the available jobs in the city and has found that the main sectors with the most openings were as follows: information technology (20,000+), financial services (10,000+) and sales (8,000+). The site has been able to find a total of over 102,000 jobs in New York City so far.

Private Companies Cut 3,900 Jobs in New York City, Newyorkcrossing Finds 39,000 Jobs

CEO A. Harrison Barnes of NewYorkCrossing says “With one opening for every five people, you need to know when and where to apply.” Barnes’ firm has been able to compile a list of over 39,000 jobs available in New York City in the last seven days.

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/22/2010 -- The private sector in New York City lost around 3,900 jobs in November after gaining 9,600 jobs in October.

The total job losses for the city are around 7,300 jobs if government jobs are included. The data includes adjustments made for seasonal changes. This brings the jobless rate of the city to 9.1% for November.

The job losses were mainly in retail (5,900) and construction, which continued its nationwide trend of cutbacks. In spite of the job losses in November, New York City still leads the country in creating new jobs. The city has added around 57,600 jobs from January to November this year.

The unemployment rate for the state of New York was 8.3% in November, the same as it was in October. The total number of unemployed New Yorkers went up to 799,500. New York has only been able to create 78,000 private sector jobs in the last 12 months. Cuts in government programs resulted in 40,000 job losses. But education and healthcare services were able to add 31,000 jobs.

The main reasons that the jobless are having a hard time finding employment in New York and throughout the country is that there are five applicants for every one opening. CEO A. Harrison Barnes of NewYorkCrossing says that there are still jobs being created in New York, but most the competition for them is fierce. "With one opening for every five people, you need to know when and where to apply." Barnes' firm has been able to compile a list of over 39,000 jobs available in New York City in the last seven days.

190,000 New Yorkers to Run out of Jobless Benefits, Newyorkcrossing Finds 40,000 Jobs

CEO A. Harrison Barnes of NewYorkCrossing says that there are still jobs being created in New York, but most the competition for them is fierce.

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/17/2010 -- Almost 190,000 people in the state of New York are going to run out of the unemployment benefits by the year's end.

Over a 100,000 people in the state have already exhausted their emergency benefits. But the number could increase by another 190,000 by January, 1 if the US Congress does not extend the Tier 5 benefits. Nationwide, up to 2 million people could run out of all benefits if the emergency benefits are not extended before the year end. Unemployed people can get benefits for 99 weeks in most states.

New York's unemployment rate for September was 8.3 percent, below the national average of 9.6 percent. But the number of unemployed people on benefits has already put the state's unemployment trust fund in the red. It is already running at a deficit of $3.2 billion and the state will have to start paying interest on the loan to the federal government beginning January 1.

The state's Labor Commissioner, Colleen Gardner has warned that Congress's failure to renew the program would prove to be "catastrophic" for the jobless New Yorkers. The main reasons that the jobless are having a hard time finding employment is that there are five applicants for every one opening.

CEO A. Harrison Barnes of NewYorkCrossing says that there are still jobs being created in New York, but most the competition for them is fierce. "With one opening for every five people, you need to know when and where to apply." Barnes' firm has been able to compile a list of over 40,000 jobs available in New York City alone.
The data is from the state's Labor Department. The state's unemployment rate was 8.2 percent, which was below the national average.
