Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children Announces New Leadership Roles

Pediatric Orthopaedic Hospital to Form New Foundation

Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/05/2012 -- Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) http://www.tsrhc.org/ today announced new appointments to its senior medical and management staff, and plans to form a Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children Foundation."

The hospital remains focused on our mission to improve the lives of the children we treat," said Lyndon L. Olson, Jr., TSRHC Chairman of the Board of Trustees. "We have significant opportunities emerging from both the hospital's leadership in pediatric orthopaedics http://www.tsrhc.org/pediatric-orthopedics.htm and the changes occurring in the overall U.S. health care industry. These appointments draw upon the strength of both our long-term hospital leaders and the next generation of leaders developed within the hospital. This depth and continuity of management is one of the hospital's most valued assets."

J.A. "Tony" Herring, M.D., TSRHC orthopaedic surgeon and Chief of Staff for the past 34 years, assumes the new title Chief of Staff Emeritus and will continue to work closely with the TSRHC medical leadership team, while maintaining his pediatric orthopaedic services to patients. Daniel "Dan" J. Sucato, M.D., M.S., TSRHC orthopaedic surgeon and Director of the Sarah M. and Charles E. Seay/Martha and Pat Beard Center for Excellence in Spine Research, is named Chief of Staff and will lead the hospital's medical team. Joining Drs. Herring and Sucato on the TSRHC medical leadership team is B. Stephens "Steve" Richards, M.D., TSRHC orthopaedic surgeon, Assistant Chief of Staff and Medical Director of Inpatient Services, who is named to the new position of Chief Medical Officer of TSRHC.

"We are especially proud to name Drs. Sucato and Richards to these positions at TSRHC," Olson said. "They began their careers as TSRHC fellows in pediatric orthopaedics and for many years have championed the expertise and compassion that is at the heart of our mission of caring for children. Both men also are recognized professors, widely published in their fields of expertise, and leaders in their professional organizations. The leadership of this hospital could not be in better hands."

The board of trustees also announced plans to form the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children Foundation. The Foundation will focus on sustaining and growing development efforts for the hospital. The board of trustees is proud to name J. C. Montgomery, Jr., who has led the hospital as president for the past 23 years, as the founding Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the TSRHC Foundation.

Succeeding Montgomery is long-time Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Robert "Bob" L. Walker, who becomes TSRHC President and CEO. Walker brings extensive expertise to his new role, having joined the administrative staff at TSRHC in 1979 and serving for 23 years as the day-to-operations leader. He will provide a seamless transition in the management of the hospital to ensure that the highest quality of medical care is provided to patients. "I am confident that Bob's leadership in his new role as president will allow the hospital to continue to make strides in cutting-edge research and technology, teaching and training physicians from around the world and maintaining excellent standards of patient care," Olson said.

Karl E. Rathjen, M.D., TSRHC orthopaedic surgeon, is named president of the TSRHC Foundation and will work with Montgomery. Rathjen joined TSRHC in 1996 and will assume the Foundation duties while maintaining his pediatric service to patients and his current role on the TSRHC medical staff. "This appointment of additional duties recognizes Karl's tremendous capacity for leadership and his important contributions to the hospital's development initiatives," noted Olson."

With J. C. and Tony continuing to provide leadership and mentoring in their new roles, and with the demonstrated expertise of our expanded leadership team, the hospital is well positioned for the opportunities ahead," according to Olson. "All of these intelligent and talented leaders have been vigilant stewards of the culture of caring for children that is unique to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children."

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children partners with American Airlines to help some special patients learn to ski, celebrating the 31st Annual Amputee Ski Trip to Winter Park, Colorado.

Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/27/2012 -- TSRHC and American Airlines will host a send-off party celebrating the 31st Annual Amputee Ski Trip to Winter Park, Colo., where 14 teenage patients from TSRHC will learn to ski. The send-off party will include a weather report and water cannon "shower of affection" arranged by American Airlines. New to this year's send-off party, American Airlines will provide games and activities with ski-themed prizes for the patients to enjoy.

In a continuing effort to improve the lives of patients, TSRHC recognized that snow skiing is well suited for amputees, and with special equipment they often excel at the sport. American Airlines will provide air transportation for the patients for the seventh year, and TSRHC medical staff and chaperones will accompany the patients for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Skiing at the renowned National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) creates a focus for the trip, but the personal growth and challenges the teens experience are often more life-changing than the actual accomplishment of skiing. The goal of the trip is to foster a sense of self-confidence, discovery and independence for these special children. Thanks to generous friends, including American Airlines and their partners, the trip is available at no charge to patient families.

Young Patient, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings to Light Holiday Tree at Annual Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children Event

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) hosted tree lighting and decorating ceremony officially lit by Dallas' own, Mayor Mike Rawlings, and 3 year old Frisco native, Ellie Stiernagle.

Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/05/2011 -- To kick off the holiday season, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) hosted a holiday tree lighting and decorating ceremony on November 29th 2011 at the hospital in Dallas. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and TSRHC patient Ellie Stiernagle, age 3 of Frisco, Texas, officially lit TSRHC's giant holiday tree. Following the tree lighting, more than 400 area volunteer groups and TSRHC friends, representing Dallas-area organizations, decorated trees placed throughout the hospital. Santa Claus was also present to spread holiday cheer, and the Town North Concert Band provided holiday music. Following the decorating extravaganza, dinner was provided for all participants.

Ellie Stiernagle, age 3 of Frisco, Texas, first visited TSRHC this past May. Ellie's experience at the hospital began in pediatric orthopedics http://www.tsrhc.org/pediatric-orthopedics.htm, and since then, she has been seen in neurology http://www.tsrhc.org/pediatric-neurology.htm where she is treated for toe walking. According to her mom, Ellie has experienced many "firsts" at TSRHC, and says she feels comfortable in the warm hospital environment and appreciates the loving care she receives from the nurses and doctors. Ellie fondly refers to TSRHC as the "Popcorn Hospital." When Ellie is not playing with her younger brother, Weston, she loves to sing, color, bake and play with her princess dolls. With Ellie's joyful spirit and caring nature, she is sure to kick off TSRHC's holiday season and spread cheer to others by lighting the hospital's holiday tree.

Coppell Resident to Serve As 2011 Dallas White Rock Marathon Patient Champion for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children

Natalie Hudson to serve as 2011 Patient Champion for the Metro PCS Dallas White Rock Mountain benefitting Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/02/2011 -- Natalie Hudson, a 17-year-old Coppell resident and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) patient, will serve as a 2011 Patient Champion for the MetroPCS® Dallas White Rock Marathon® benefiting TSRHC.

The Patient Champions serve as young ambassadors for TSRHC, representing thousands of patients treated at the hospital each year. The Patient Champion program is a way for the community to participate in race-weekend activities and fundraise on behalf of a patient. Participants can create their own online pledge page in honor of our five patient champions, to encourage support from friends and family, with all donations benefiting TSRHC.

Since 1997, the hospital has been the primary beneficiary of the Dallas White Rock Marathon®, which includes a full and half marathon, 5-person relay and the SMU Cox Corporate Relay Challenge presented by Behringer Harvard. This year's marathon will take place Sunday, December 4.

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) patient Natalie, age 17 of Coppell, has been a patient at TSRHC since she was 3 weeks old.

Born missing her left hand, Natalie has proven that anything is possible with the right attitude and help from the physicians in the hospital's Charles E. Seay, Jr. Hand Center http://www.tsrhc.org/hand-center.htm. A junior at New Tech High at Coppell and Head Captain for the colorguard, Natalie uses a fingerless glove—fabricated in the hospital's prosthetics department—that she wears over her left arm to grip the flag during a performance. This year, she shared her talents with fellow hand patients at TSRHC where she performed a duet with a close friend and fellow colorguard member. For Natalie, who recalls learning to tie her shoes at TSRHC, the hospital has been a place for her to flourish as she grew from a child into a young adult. For the past four years, Natalie has been a regular at a camp offered to TSRHC patients with hand differences http://www.tsrhc.org/hand-disorders.htm. Natalie is a wonderful example to her peers and fellow patients alike.

About the MetroPCS® Dallas White Rock Marathon®:Voted the top marathon and half marathon in the state by Competitor Texas magazine, the MetroPCS® Dallas White Rock Marathon® is a flat and fast race, featuring a start/finish in Fair Park and a scenic course that includes a 10-mile loop around White Rock Lake.
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) Researchers Discover Genes Associated with Idiopathic Scoliosis

New Discovery at TSRHC Yields Additional Clues to Understanding Most Common Spinal Deformity in Children

Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/26/2011 -- Researchers at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC), one of the nation's leading pediatric centers for the research and treatment of orthopaedic conditions http://www.tsrhc.org/pediatric-orthopedics.htm, have identified new genetic markers associated with idiopathic scoliosis http://www.tsrhc.org/scoliosis-spine.htm, the most common spinal deformity in children. The results highlight genetic factors implicated in increased risk of idiopathic scoliosis, and point to two genes in particular that are involved in neurologic development. With no known cause or cure, idiopathic scoliosis poses a significant health burden to the pediatric population. The condition affects approximately two to three percent of school-age children in the United States and costs an estimated several billion dollars in surgical treatment each year.

The new discovery follows the research team's identification, in 2007, of the first gene associated with idiopathic scoliosis http://www.tsrhc.org/genetic-scoliosis-research.htm and is a result of an ongoing five-year study begun in 2008 at the Sarah M. and Charles E. Seay/Martha and Pat Beard Center for Excellence in Spine Research at TSRHC http://www.tsrhc.org/center-for-excellence-in-spine-research.htm. The research, led by Carol Wise, Ph.D., director of molecular genetics at TSRHC, is funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Following earlier family-based studies with the common goal of identifying genes that contribute to idiopathic scoliosis, the research team conducted genome-wide association studies that discovered new potential disease-influencing genes in 419 Texas families with a confirmed idiopathic scoliosis diagnosis. Further analyses of these findings were conducted in more than 1,000 additional idiopathic scoliosis cases and controls from Texas and other parts of the United States.

Most significant findings centered on two additional genes, CHL1 and DSCAM,which play a role in the neurologic and spinal systems. These findings will allow the medical community to form new hypotheses to explain what causes the condition and provide tools for future research. Dr. Swarkar Sharma is the lead author of the study that appeared in the April 2011 issue of the Human Molecular Genetics journal.

"This study provides the most definitive link yet between the neurological and spinal system and scoliosis," said Dr. Wise. "For many decades scoliosis has been addressed as a disease of the bones and muscles. This research suggests that the nervous system may be important in the disease and is pointing us toward genes that tell the patient's nerves how to grow. We believe the study will allow us to narrow our research focus on the path toward a brighter future for our young patients."

Most often seen in otherwise healthy children, idiopathic scoliosis is an S- or C-shaped curvature of the spine, as viewed from the front, which develops as the child grows. Onset typically occurs during the rapid adolescent growth period, and children who are still growing, particularly girls, are at the greatest risk for developing severe idiopathic scoliosis. A condition first documented by ancient Greeks, idiopathic scoliosis affects populations worldwide.

"This discovery lays additional groundwork for future research that will hopefully identify the specific abnormalities which cause the spine curvature," said Dr. Tony Herring, chief of staff at TSRHC. "When we understand these mechanisms, we may be able to develop improved prevention and treatment methods."

With expert researchers, biomedical engineers, physicians, staff and patients all under the same roof, TSRHC has a record of multidisciplinary collaboration that generates an exceptional number of patents, discoveries and improved treatments for patients. The hospital's prestigious research efforts and innovative scoliosis treatment methods http://www.tsrhc.org/scoliosis-treatment.htm make it a leader in spine research and have allowed the hospital and its staff to significantly improve care of young patients with spinal deformities throughout Texas, the United States and the world.

More help is needed in the groundbreaking research to find and fight the causes of scoliosis http://www.tsrhc.org/scoliosis-patient-education.htm. TSRHC is asking healthy women, ages 18-45, to give a small sample of blood to use as a healthy sample to compare with those who have the disease. To learn more or schedule a donation time, call (214) 559-7869.

Funding for the Research
This research was funded through a grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (Grant R01 HD052973). The hospital's work also is made possible through the establishment of the Pediatric Molecular Genetics Research Laboratory at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, which was funded by: The Crystal Charity Ball 1997; Beneke Companies; Horace C.
Child Safety Day is designed to teach community children about traffic safety and general safety including poison control and fire and water safety. Children had the opportunity to see the Dallas Police Department and CareFlite helicopters land, meet the official Dallas Fire Department mascot, Sparky the Dog and take the "Safety Day Pledge." Children also participated in an official fingerprinting activity with the Dallas Police Department and explored the inside of a fire truck.
Bike Rodeo provides a safe environment for children to practice bicycle safety skills by riding on a course designed to simulate actual road conditions. The activities help make children aware of bicycle safetyissues and encourage parents to ensure that children always use safety equipment. Children had their bikes inspected and had the chance to win a bike. Every child also received a free bike helmet.
