Hobson & Motzer President Bruce Dworak Interviewed in MPO

Medtech Makers Series discusses quality for precision metal components and assemblies.

Durham, CT -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/20/2021 -- As a part of Medical Product Outsourcing's (MPO) series "Medtech Makers, MPO Interviews with Medtech Pros," Bruce Dworak, president of Hobson & Motzer was interviewed regarding the company's vigilance with quality when serving the needs of medical device manufacturers.

Noting the vital nature of maintaining quality in the medical device supply chain, and recognizing that quality means different thing among suppliers, MPO's editor in chief, Sean Fenske, asked Dworak several questions to discern Hobson & Motzer's approach to quality in its manufacturing of precision metal components and assemblies to medical device manufacturers.

Dworak clarified "what quality means" to Hobson & Motzer by stating (in part), "Quality means meeting or exceeding customer expectations; that's the first line. … Then, the second line is understanding of requirements—knowing what constitutes quality." He continued, "All staff are given a voice and encouraged to participate in ongoing improvement initiatives. Everyone is trained and supported to uphold the highest quality standards for the critical components we manufacture. People truly have a sense of personal pride in knowing their work is instrumental in what comes together in the form of a medical device, instrument, or robotic surgery platform, all aimed improving the lives of others."

Fenske asked if Dworak is "satisfied" from a performance standpoint, to which Dworak replied (in part), "We have a very good track record. To expand on that, our five-year average of customer returns is only 0.0003 percent of product that actually comes back to us."

In his response to how Hobson & Motzer stands out from other manufacturers in the medical device sector, Dworak said, "As far as what separates us from the competition, there is a lot. What comes to mind is consistency and reliability, something we often hear from our customers. As a company, I think we offer a wealth of experience, too. Hobson & Motzer is over a century old, and we have been fortunate to maintain a strong, high-performing team at every level of the company. Quality requires a lot of different expertise; maintaining the integrity of that expertise, systemically, from generation to generation has been key from a quality perspective. We practice what I call "authentic" lean manufacturing, something that is ingrained in our culture.

A discussion about the latest, most advanced technology and equipment that Hobson & Motzer has acquired (continual investment in advanced technology is a cornerstone of its forward-focused vision), lead Dworak to mention Hobson & Motzer's First Step program, which is geared toward development work: "Much of this work tends to be for next-generation medical device and surgical instrument components and components used for robotic surgery platforms. In most cases, these projects put us at the very front end of the design process with customers. As such, they involve significant DFM (design for manufacturability) work. We have our engineering and applications teams working very closely with customers on their design. We bring that precision into the prototype development. It's a systematic NPD (new product development) process that delivers a better outcome, reduces time to market, and improves the end results."

Other inquires included how continual innovation has motivated the approach to quality, the elements of a quality relationship with customers, and ensuring quality throughout the supply chain. Click here to read the entire discussion.

Advanced Industries Precision Metal Component Supplier Transitions to ISO 13485

Hobson & Motzer, a precision metal components manufacturer for the medical device industries reaches ISO certification milestone

Durham, CT -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/18/2020 -- Connecticut-based Hobson & Motzer announces it has met the requirements for its ISO 13485 Certification. As a leading supplier to the medical device industry for precision metal stamping, CNC-machining, and advanced manufacturing expertise, this further fortifies Hobson & Motzer's commitment to the medical device market to maintain excellence and the highest quality components. This ISO 13485 Certification enhances the foundation of an already robust Quality Management System (QMS): ISO 9001:2015, which has been in place since 1996, to ensure Hobson & Motzer customers that quality—in every aspect—is systemic and reliable.

ISO 13485 Certification helps improve overall performance, eliminate uncertainty, and widen market opportunities. Companies with this certification communicate a commitment to the medical device industry and to patients around the world who benefit from their critical products. ISO 13485 is designed to be used by organizations involved in one or more stages of the medical device lifecycle: design and development, production, and storage. The framework for implementation includes outlining how to review and improve processes; increasing efficiency, cutting costs, and monitoring performance; demonstrating the production of safer medical devices; and meeting regulatory requirements and customer expectations.

Hobson & Motzer President Bruce Dworak says of the ISO 13485 Certification, "We are very proud of this quality milestone, though we had been Certified to IATF 16949 and were already producing at a very high standard, 13485 aligns better with our core business focus in the medical device space. We were pleased that after a five-day on-site audit, neither of our auditors reported any findings. It is testament to our strong commitment to quality, our people, and a robust QMS. Having an ISO 13485 certification assures our current and potential customers that we will continue to provide the safe and effective medical components for medical devices that they have always relied on us for."

New Project-Based Rapid Precision Prototype Program Launches for Precision Metal Components in the Medical Device Industry

Hobson & Motzer, a precision metal components manufacturer for advanced industries, announces First Step

Durham, CT -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/03/2020 -- Hobson & Motzer, a leading supplier to the medical device industry, a Connecticut-based precision metal stamping, CNC-machining, and advanced manufacturing expert announces its new project-based rapid precision prototyping program, called First Step. First Step promises to deliver precision tolerance prototypes that support new product introduction (NPI) efforts for advanced industries.

More than a century of manufacturing expertise and hundreds of successful product development projects have afforded Hobson & Motzer intimate knowledge of the demand for this specific capability in the medical device market and other advanced industries. The key word is precision—when a project calls for more than just a rendering of a component. Precision prototypes provide more utility in the new product development process: for testing, fitment, form, function, and more. Today's precision instruments call for a different set of rules.

With proven processes and industry-leading technology in its world-class facilities, Hobson & Motzer is known for creating innovative solutions for the most complex component needs, serving quality-critical industries. Hobson & Motzer has the unique ability to quickly deliver iterations of precise tolerance prototypes, enabling companies to use First Step to enhance product development and then more easily transition into scaled production by maintaining learning curve continuity within the manufacturer—ultimately increasing speed to market for customers. With early engagement on these projects, Hobson & Motzer leverages its manufacturing and engineering strength for insightful DFM, engineered quality, and manufacturing efficiency—all key characteristics to build into the process from the First Step.

Hobson & Motzer's Strategic Market Development Manager Anthony Bracale, says of the First Step program, "The introduction of this platform for NPI is the voice of the customer, loud and clear. Customers in advanced industries have expressed a need for higher level rapid prototyping that is executed to precise tolerances. It provides an opportunity for both the part and manufacturing process to evolve simultaneously. This approach yields valuable data and learning that does not occur when the two processes are separate. Having a dedicated program is the next natural step for us to offer our customers. At Hobson & Motzer, the best First Step is one that employs the same proven processes that are applied in large-scale production programs from the get-go—with the full force of our team and talent behind it. An engagement with Hobson & Motzer's First Step rapid precision prototyping program is just that—the First Step in a successful product development project. We realize that one-off prototypes are available elsewhere—we produce precision parts and processes, which help customers deliver better results."
Founded over 100 years ago, Hobson & Motzer has steadily grown in size, capability, capacity, and expertise. Hobson & Motzer is a vertically integrated manufacturer of precision metal components and assemblies and excels at precision metal stamping and coining. It designs and builds complex progressive dies and offers a full complement of multi-axis CNC machining, precision electro-chemical machining (PECM), and R&D mechatronics and automation. The company's infrastructure assures that its parts and critical projects will remain on quality, on schedule, and on time. Hobson & Motzer specializes in quality-critical precision parts and components, largely serving the medical device, aerospace, and automotive industries, among others—and often for projects that have otherwise been deemed "impossible." It operates two manufacturing plants with primary operations—and headquarters—centrally located in Durham, CT; with its Advanced Manufacturing Center in nearby Wallingford, CT.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Anthony Bracale
Telephone: 1-860-349-1756
Email: Click to Email Anthony Bracale
Web: https://www.hobsonmotzer.com
