The club will be hosting the third annual pro tennis tournament in the Boston area starting August 8th through August 14th. The Thoreau Tennis Open, in cooperation with the Women&apos;s Tennis Association (WTA) and the USTA will attract top-ranked players from all over the world, including those who will play in the 2022 US. Open. Players representing over 40 countries will compete for $115,000 in prize money which has doubled since the inaugural event in 2019. <br />

This year&apos;s competition is made up of top ranked lady&apos;s pro tennis and emerging players from around the world. The tournament favorite and the current highest ranked player, Varvara Gracheva, playing both singles and doubles matches in this week&apos;s Thoreau Open. <br />

Gracheva will be playing against some strong competition against Harmony Tan (France) who is a strong competitor and former champion. Gracheva and Tan will be competing against a deep field including other notables such as, Anna Kalinskaya and Magdalena Frech (Poland), who is last year&apos;s Thoreau Open Champion.<br />

The Boston based tournament is much needed, according to the WTA, to create and sustain professional level players locally who will be competing on the world stage. New England had not seen a tournament of this size in 14 years prior to 2019&apos;s successful tournament, which brought over 2,000 fans and 250 players and coaches from around the world. This event was bigger and better than that in 2019 bringing Olympic athletes, and the Wimbledon Doubles champion to Massachusetts.<br />

Just this past weekend, Su-Wei Hsieh, world ranking number 4 and former number 1, won this year&apos;s ladies doubles championship title at Wimbledon and will be playing in the Thoreau Open this year. 2020 Thoreau Open Champion, Caroline Dolehide lost in the semi-finals at Wimbledon. Additionally, this year&apos;s roster will include Vera Zvonereva, former number 2 in the world ranking.<br />

Massimo Policastro, Thoreau Club&apos;s tennis director is in charge of running the tournament. Policastro comes from an international tennis background having played competitively and later went on to manage clubs in Italy and the U.S. His experience from hosting and managing professional tennis tournaments will be on display August 2 through 8 at the Thoreau Tennis Open in Concord. Policastro says, "this will be a fun family event for both tennis fans, and anyone interested in seeing professional sports locally".<br />

Over 1000 Bostonians gathered throughout the week at Concord&apos;s Thoreau Club to watch 64 women from all over the world compete for $60,000 in prize money. Some of the players were there for a tune up before the upcoming US Open. Some were there to capture a check and chase dreams of higher rankings. The week long tournament featured some pretty intense competition, delicious food from companies like Island Creek Oysters, Bully Boy, 7th Brewing Company, Modern Pastry, Nashoba Brook Bakery and Juliana&apos;s Catering.<br />

Kulikov and Valdez started off strong taking a solid lead in the first set only to see Halbauer and Neel fight back to split sets ultimately to be decided by a tie breaker. Halbauer and Neel were one point away from the match championship only to miss an overhead allowing Kulikov and Valdez to rally back and take the match. <br />

In the singles final, Caroline Dolhide defeated Ann Li in an all USA finals to capture the first inaugural Thoreau Tennis Open tournament championship. Caroline Dolehide brought her power serve and hard-hitting style to take a comfortable lead against Ann Li. Thought the match seemed like a comfortable win for Dolehide, Ann Li fought back during the match with her relentless return of serve and baseline strategy. Caroline Dolehide is now headed to the U.S. Open hoping to make a deep run in New York.<br />
