Preparing for a Video Interview

COVID-19 has contributed to work interviews being conducted online, with services like Zoom becoming increasingly common. Video interviews work a little differently than those done in person. A couple of guidelines may help secure the job.

Sylvan Springs, AL -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/21/2020 -- It may be face to face, but dressing the part is still important. Attire can affect demeanor and, therefore, make a person appear more professional even if the interview is only seeing the prospective above the waist.

Etiquette is arguably even more important. It's not uncommon for there to be a delay in the audio. If a person is not careful, they may accidentally be perceived as though the interviewer is being rudely interrupted. A few seconds before responding to a question is a safe bet.

Note-taking may be necessary, reinforcing the need to have pen and paper handy. Although it would make sense to simply type in something that needs to be written down, this might work against the candidate because they may be seen as focused on something else. Writing down notes indicates that the applicant is paying attention to the interviewer, and can help appear more professional.

Recent Changes to I-9 Remote Hiring of Employees

Sylvan Springs, AL -- 04/07/2020 – Recent changes have been to the physical presence requirements associated with the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) and the hiring and re-verifying of employees.

Sylvan Springs, AL -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/07/2020 -- Before these changes,, I-9 examination was required to be done in person, reviewing an employee's original documents in their presence. With the COVID-19 pandemic, however, hundreds of thousands of US workers are now carrying out their job duties as remote workers. At least temporarily, the Department of Homeland Security will require employers with staff taking physical proximity precautions to inspect the Form I-9, Section 2 Identity and Job Eligibility Documents remotely using methods such as video connections, email, and fax.

Employers must use COVID-19 as the justification for the delay in inspection and they are also expected to review the documents in Section 2 remotely a maximum a three business days after the recruit. However, once normal operations resume, all employees who have completed Form I-9 via remote verification are expected to report in person to their employer within three business days for identification and job eligibility documentation.

Tips for Frequent Job Hopping

Sylvan Springs, AL -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/26/2020 -- Job hoppers may need to create a resume that can still appeal to hiring managers despite the possible risk. This usually means a resume should have a strong summary that thoroughly conveys what the candidate can bring to the table.

For those with lots of years of experience across multiple, it's wise to be selective about which jobs are mentioning on the resume. Imagine a scenario where a job was held for two years, followed by one that only lasted a couple of months and then led to another that lasted a few years. In such a scenario, it may be a better idea not to include the "shorter" job and instead focus on the jobs where the most time was spent. Candidates should also refrain from including dates or months and focus on years.

It's important to avoid a situation where a candidate implies that they moved to another job solely because of the higher pay as this could be negatively interpreted. It's a better idea to use examples such as a job being only a contract or the company was ultimately dissolved.

The New Employment Laws of 2020

Employers in 2020 may notice new changes to employment laws along with the new year—and a few could be critically important to businesses.

Sylvan Springs, AL -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/06/2020 -- By upping the minimum salary level to $684 from $455 weekly, the Fair Labor Standards Act Overtime Provisions law would make all employees who earn less than $35,568 a year eligible under the Fair Labor Standards Act to receive overtime pay, or time and a half.

Employees looking for work in New Jersey can no longer be asked what they make. Assembly Bill 1094 prevents employers from inquiring about an applicant's salary history, in addition to benefits and wages.

The California law AB5 mandates that companies must reclassify independent contractors as workers. This means they are eligible for health benefits as well as pay for time off, in addition to other types of compensation.

The new requirements do not extend to workers looking for jobs in like emergency response like firefighters or prospective employees that may have substance abuse issues and may affect the safety of others.

Sylvan Springs, AL – For those stuck in a job they are not fond of going to every day, using the current job to find a new one can prove beneficial towards advancing one’s career. Perhaps working alone is a plus, or the collaborative nature is stimulating. Identify the moments that create a passion, even if rare. Use this as a foundation of what qualities to seek in the next job.

No matter the job, concentrate on what the ideal responsibilities would be in the next job and what needs to be done to get the position. Perhaps networking, greater training, or revising the resume may be required. This is something that should be done regularly regardless of whether or not a person is job hunting.

Contrary to predictions, federal contractors may not receive lesser fines by the Trump administration. Well-known companies like Goldman Sachs and Bank of America have settled accusations of workplace-discrimination with the Department of Labor's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP).

Sylvan Springs, AL -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/21/2019 -- The OFCCP has collected millions of dollars in fines from these major companies, and they are among the highest in a long time. Goldman Sachs will pay nearly $10 million to over 500 workers to settle pay-discrimination claims at its New York corporate headquarters. The firm will also establish Functional Affirmative Action Programs, tweaking its current programs so they concentrate on business functions or units versus geographic location. During June, the OFCCP made changes to its guidelines to ease the process for companies to utilize these plans compared to the regular plans based on location.

The OFCCP is currently involved in litigation against JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Oracle. The former has allegedly paid women less than men for technology positions while the latter allegedly owes female, Asian and black workers over $300 million in shorted wages.

In previous years, an OFCCP compliance audit required reviewing one establishment or business unit. If it resulted in the discovery of technical violations or discriminatory practices, OFCCP did not have a way to tackle similar violations at other businesses or establishments.

The Benefits of a Temporary Job

Sylvan Springs, AL -- 09/05/2019 – An essential ingredient to a great quality of life is being passionate about a job. Regrettably, countless individuals who choose a specific career path but do not find the fulfillment they may be seeking due to reasons such as the pay or a lack of using their skills. Temporary can prove vital in helping a person transition to something they enjoy.

Sylvan Springs, AL -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/05/2019 -- A major hurdle of embarking on a new career is a lack of experience being asked by an employer. By filling a job temporarily, an employer may agree to the hire despite the lack of experience. There are fewer costs associated with a temporary hire and less money and there are few risks if the employer is dissatisfied with the temporary employee. The temporary employee can fill a short-term vacancy that may result in a full-time position "upgrade" if the employer is impressed with the temporary hire's performance.

Most significantly, temporary jobs allow a person to learn the vital skills they can add to their resume that attract the attention of prospective employers. Taking any temporary job within a new field being pursued can make the applicant better suited for a job, potentially avoiding the common step of having to begin with an entry level position.

Benefits of Hiring Veterans

Employers that have chosen to hire veterans for previous positions typically choose to do so again as these individuals come with excellent training and qualities due to their previous military experience.

Sylvan Springs, AL -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/06/2019 -- Veterans come to jobs with a mindset aimed at being successful, similar to that of an entrepreneur. Moreover, they can make knowledgeable decisions when they need to be made quickly and they can expeditiously act as group leaders as many of them may have previous experience working in a company or a team of two individuals.
During their service, veterans are frequently reminded of having a plan B. Because they've been trained extensively in the importance of having a viable backup, these people can accommodate to unexpected changes without missing a beat.
In regards to working with others, veterans are admirably proficient at organizing and creating well-defined team goals. They can easily figure out which team member is best suited to take on certain duties and responsibilities, ensuring they can reach the established goals.
