Connecticut Govt May Cut 1,000 of State Jobs to Close Deficit, Governmentcrossing Finds 25,000 Jobs

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/01/2011 -- Dannel Malloy of Connecticut is planning to cut over 5,000 jobs and leave another 1,000 jobs vacant in a bid to close the budget deficit.

Malloy says that 5,466 state employees need to be laid off in order to close a $1.6 billion budget deficit. One of the reasons for the cuts is that Moody's Investors Service has downgraded Connecticut's ratings from stable to negative. The decision was based on the fact that Connecticut has some of America's most underfunded pension plans.

Efforts to close the deficit by other ways are not getting a lot of success. The labor unions rejected a deal that would have resulted in a 2 year wage freeze and 9 unpaid furlough days. The state employees would also have to pay more in their healthcare contributions.

Across the board cuts are a possibility only if the departments involved cannot find ways to save money in other ways. The biggest hit is going to be for the corrections department which will lose 1,019 positions. Other departments that will be losing many positions are the department of transportation with 817 cuts. The judicial department will have 450 job cuts and 403 jobs will be cut in the state's universities and community colleges.

State and city governments nationwide are on a job reduction mode. Most of the new few government jobs that are being created are actually in the federal government.

GovernmentCrossing, a job aggregator site, for jobs from various government organizations, has located over 25,000 jobs at all levels of government.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Mary Wilson
GovernmentCrossing
Telephone: 626-243-1814
Email: Click to Email Mary Wilson
Web: http://www.GovernmentCrossing.com

Layoffs in Government Jobs Threaten Economic Recovery Says Report, Governmentcrossing Finds 23,000 Jobs

The Labor Department’s latest figures show that local governments cut 267,000 jobs and state governments cut 24,000 jobs from May 2010 to May 2011.

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/23/2011 -- A new report from the Brookings Institution warns that mass layoffs of government workers could end up threatening the fragile economic recovery underway.

The report highlights the fact that 19 out of the 20 metro areas which saw strong economies since 2007 were areas where government hiring was strong. Also, out of the 20 worst hit metro areas, 13 had big losses in government jobs. Most of the government workforce is composed of city and state employees.

The Labor Department's latest figures show that local governments cut 267,000 jobs and state governments cut 24,000 jobs from May 2010 to May 2011. As of May 2011, the local governments employed 14.16 million Americans.

The recently concluded US Conference of Mayors noted that a quarter of America's metro areas have unemployment rates of over 10 percent and many cities are not going to see jobs return to their pre-recession level for a decade. At least 48 cities are going to be facing this "lost decade" till 2020, the Mayors' organization claimed in a report on Monday.

The cities with high unemployment rates are now stuck in a downward spiral. With unemployment high, the tax base is getting smaller and they have to cut services, resulting in even more layoffs. Most of the new government jobs are being created by the federal government. GovernmentCrossing, a job aggregator site, for jobs from various government organizations, has located over 23,000 jobs at all levels of government.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Mary Wilson
GovernmentCrossing
Telephone: 626-243-1814
Email: Click to Email Mary Wilson
Web: http://www.GovernmentCrossing.com

Private Sector Jobs Gains Stays Anemic in August, Governmentcrossing Finds over 9,000 Jobs

GovernmentCrossing is a niche job aggregator site, targeting only jobs available in the government. The site has been able to find over 9,000 government jobs at the local, state and federal level this week.

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/03/2010 -- The Labor Department is going to release the employment report for August today, with experts saying it is going to show that only around 41,000 nonfarm private jobs were created.

Initial unemployment claims for the week ending August 28 fell to 472,000. The number of Americans getting unemployment checks also fell to 4.46 million on the week ending August 21, which was the latest data available. But hiring in the private sector remains weak. The nonfarm private payrolls are expected to increase by only 41,000. The economy needs to create on average around 150,000 jobs just to cope with the increase in the labor force.

Even the jobs that are being added include a substantial use of the temp sector, which now employs 2.1 million Americans. And while temp jobs are often seen as a precursor to a recovery of the jobs market, the paychecks are smaller and the jobs are without any benefits. These jobs are now employing an increasing number of people with professional qualifications.

A. Harrison Barnes, CEO of GovernmentCrossing, says that government jobs are a good choice in these times. "Most government jobs today pay more than their equivalents in the private sector. Plus they are relatively stable, which is a big point for a lot of people." GovernmentCrossing is a niche job aggregator site, targeting only jobs available in the government. The site has been able to find over 9,000 government jobs at the local, state and federal level this week.

500,000Job Cuts Expected at Local and State Government Level, but 18,000 Jobs Listed on Governmentcrossing

GovernmentCrossing, a job aggregator site, has been able to list almost 18,000 jobs across the state and local government agencies, with 12,000 vacancies being posted just this month.

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/11/2010 -- The federal government has decided to give $26 billion to local and state governments, but even that is expected to be insufficient to save 500,000 to 600,000 jobs.

These jobs are expected to be slashed over the next 12 months. Experts say at least 30,000 jobs every month will have to be cut by state and local agencies. The job losses also include the ones at the private businesses that do work with and for government departments. The report came from the Center on Budget and Priority Policies, a Washington DC based think tank.

The Labor Department's July job report shows that state and local governments downsized by 48,000 workers that month, bringing the total to 169,000 job cuts since January. The figure excludes private sector jobs linked to government spending. In spite of the federal aid, the states still have a 62.3 billion budget deficit for 2011 fiscal year.

GovernmentCrossing, a job aggregator site, has been able to list almost 18,000 jobs across the state and local government agencies, with 12,000 vacancies being posted just this month. Most of the jobs are in the healthcare sector, especially the Veterans Department, needing advanced skills such as medical technologist, registered nurse, information technology specialist. GovernmentCrossing CEO, A. Harrison Barnes says "This isn't surprising, people still have to be taken care of and the Veterans Department is one of the biggest employers of healthcare professionals in the country."
