Gostai Jazz Robots Give CeBIT a Taste of Science-fiction

Paris, France -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/04/2011 -- CeBIT is the place to be to show cutting edge technologies. Gostai takes this opportunity to showcase its Jazz robot with a brand new LCD screen in Hannover. Jazz will roll down the aisles of hall 9 starting from booth B09 in the French Pavillion from March 1 to March 5.

Jazz is a robot made for mobile telepresence. It is 1-meter tall, fitted with a camera and connected to the Internet over WiFi. The user connects to the robot from afar via a regular web browser. He can then control a robot in Paris from New York and see through the robot's camera, which image is displayed in the browser in real-time. That way, the user can take part in a meeting, visit a place, and see what is happening in their office or factory in a natural and interactive way. There is no need to travel as the robot "teleports" the user so they can watch the robot's surroundings while talking & hearing through the embedded loudspeaker and microphone. All this is done while controlling the robot's moves via an intuitive interface.

Mobile telepresence is a new way to communicate, which makes informal talks easier. In addition to the sound and image provided in usual videoconferencing systems, mobile telepresence also enables the user to move. With mobile telepresence, it is now possible to keep in touch with a distant place while away or teleworking. It also helps reduce carbon footprint and travel costs, as well as being a device to welcome guests. Jazz is now available for sale starting at 7900€.

CeBIT is the first time Gostai showcases its Jazz robot with an LCD screen. The screen makes it possible to see the person who is controlling the robot. This, in addition to Jazz's articulated head, makes interactions even more natural. According to Gostai founder and CEO Jean-Christophe Baillie, " mobile telepresence will completely change long-distance communication. Gostai decided to make the Jazz line of robots user-friendly and elegant without compromising on quality, proving that robotics can be both efficient and a pleasure to use ".

Gostai Unveals Its New Service Robots Line

Gostai, Europe’s leader in service robotics & Artificial Intelligence solutions, reveals its Gostai Jazz® autonomous service robots line.

Paris, Ile-de-France -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/22/2010 -- Gostai Jazz robots have been made for telepresence. 1-meter tall Jazz robots are mobile, fitted with a camera and connected to the Internet via wifi. The user connects to the robot from afar via any web browser. He can then control a robot in Paris from New York and see through the robot's camera, which recorded image appears in the browser in real time. That way, the user can take part in a meeting, visit a place, and see what is happening in their office or factory in a natural and interactive way.

There is no need to go anywhere as the robot "teleports" the user, who can listen to and see the robot's surroundings and talk through the embedded loudspeaker while controlling the robot's moves via an intuitive interface.

Telepresence is a new way to communicate, which makes informal talks easier. In addition to the sound and image provided in usual systems, telepresence also enables the user to move. Thanks to telepresence, it is now possible to keep in touch with a company while away or teleworking. It also helps reduce carbon footprint and travel costs, as well as being a device to welcome guests or looking after a place from afar.

Jazz can also patrol autonomously at night thanks to an infrared camera and a map of its surroundings as well as a laser system, with which the robot can localize things. It detects suspicious moves and is an addition to a night watchman or traditional alarm system. In case of any alert or doubt, the teleoperator can control the robot to check on the situation in real time.
According to Gostai founder and CEO Jean-Christophe Baillie, " robotics telepresence will completely change long-distance communication. Gostai decided to make the Jazz range of robots user-friendly and elegant without compromising on quality, proving that robotics can be a pleasure and efficient".
Next to Urbi, Gostai also offers the Gostai Studio graphical programming tools, and compatibility with various simulators, making the Urbi framework one of the most advanced and complete solution for robot and complex system programming available today.

Remarkably, Urbi is also very simple to use, even for beginners. It is perfectly suitable for advanced industrial or academics applications, as well as for the educational market.

The source code is covered by an Affero GNU GPL v3 license and is available for immediate download and use from Gostai's website. This initiative will allow developers worldwide to participate in the growth of the industry's most innovative robotic software solution.

Jean-Christophe Baillie, Gostai's Founder and CEO, announced at the ICRA'10 conference in Alaska: "Going open source with a GNU GPL compatible license is the best way to make sure that Urbi will always be available freely for everyone to use, check and share, while maintaining a dual licensing model providing support and advanced features for commercial partners. Coming from an academic research lab, Gostai has always believed in the open-source model and sharing of innovation. It has been a long time since we worked to prepare Urbi for that move, and now it's ready!"
