Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia Calls for Donations During the Holiday Season

Maple Shade, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/13/2023 -- As the holiday season approaches, Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia is reaching out to the community with an appeal for donations to support their mission of providing education and job-training to those in need.

The holiday season is a time of celebration, reflection, and generosity, and Goodwill is emphasizing the importance of giving during this special time of year. The organization, founded in 1948, has been a cornerstone of the community, dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities and disadvantages to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
The need for donations is always critical this time of year, as challenges in our community make it even more difficult for so many. By donating to Goodwill, community members not only declutter their homes but also contribute to creating a pathway for someone in need to achieve success.

To make a donation, individuals can drop off items at any Goodwill donation center or schedule a home pickup through the organization's website at www.goodwillnj.org. In the event you have nothing material to give, you can also make a financial donation. Every act of giving, no matter how small, makes a significant difference in the lives of those Goodwill serves.

120 Years Later; Goodwill Continues the Mission of Its Founder

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/15/2022 -- Founded in 1902 by Edgar J. Helms, Goodwill has been a leader in providing services to help build up local communities. Mr. Helms was a Methodist Minister and early social innovator that believed strongly in providing the tools needed so that everyone in a community could flourish.

Mr. Helms started Goodwill by accepting donations from wealthy community members and then having the goods refurbished by individuals who were hired from impoverished communities. Once items were sold, that revenue was used to pay the wages of workers. This model is still in practice today, as Goodwill uses the proceeds from sales to fund educational and job training programs.

Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia began in Camden in the mid-20th century. The organization continues to run operations throughout the region that positively impact local neighborhoods. They realize that the power of work is a key factor in developing strong and independent individuals that can then make a difference in their own communities.

Goodwill Continues to Combat the Misinformation in "Think Before You Donate" Emails

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/31/2022 -- Over the past several years, an email titled, "Think Before You Donate" has been sent to thousands of email addresses across the country. This email contains false information about Goodwill and other leading charitable organizations. We want to make sure to set the record straight in regard to our operations and mission.

First and foremost, the email identifies Mark Curran as the owner and president of our organization. It goes on to say that Mr. Curran profits $2.3 million dollars per year from donations made to Goodwill. This is completely false information. Goodwill is made up of 157+ autonomous organizations across the USA and in 12 additional countries. Each organization is governed by volunteer Boards that do not retain any ownership of Goodwill. Additionally, no one named Mark Curran has ever led the nonprofit.

Some other important facts:
Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia is a 501 (c) (3) organization with a Board of Trustees who serve as volunteers. Mark B. Boyd has served as our president and CEO since 2005.

93 cents of every dollar generated by Goodwill goes directly to their mission. We've received an "A" rating from CharityWatch and are considered in high regard by other accreditation bodies.

100% of your donation goes to support the operations of Goodwill. All sales made from donated items go to fund continuing education and job development programs.

Those interested in donating to Goodwill Industries of Southern NJ & Philadelphia are encouraged to contact us for more information. We strive to provide a safe and secure path for those looking to make both financial donations and material donations to a charitable organization. Thank you, from all of us at Goodwill. Together we can make a difference in the lives of others.

Goodwill Donation Center in Sewell Set to Reopen After Suspicious Fire

Store Merchandise Completely Destroyed

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/21/2022 -- Goodwill Industries of Southern NJ & Philadelphia announced today that it will open a donation trailer in the side rear of its Sewell, NJ (475 Hurfville-Cross Keys Road) location on Tuesday, January 25 at 9 am. A fire broke out in the Goodwill Store & Donation Center in the early morning hours of January 15, and it has been closed ever since.

According to Goodwill President & CEO Mark B. Boyd, everything in the store suffered smoke damage and is in the process of being discarded. "To lose 100% of our merchandise so generously donated to us is devastating."

The site employs 30 individuals who have been reassigned to other Goodwill locations nearby.

To rebuild its inventory, Goodwill will operate a donation trailer in the parking lot of the Sewell Goodwill starting Tuesday, January 25. It will be open Monday – Saturday from 9 am – 7 pm and Sunday from 10 am – 6 pm. A Goodwill donation attendant will be onsite to help unload donations and to issue receipts for tax purposes. Learn what Goodwill will accept or not accept for donation by visiting their website.

The Goodwill in Sewell, NJ, will remain closed until further notice.

The Sewell Goodwill Store & Donation Center first opened its doors in July 2019. As a nonprofit, community-based organization, Goodwill collects and recycles gently-used donated items and sells them in-store to fund job training programs and career services that help people with disabilities and disadvantages get to work. For example, at Goodwill's Helms Academy, one can earn their high school diploma and up to 30 college credits 100% tuition-free.

"Goodwill is an entrepreneurial-minded nonprofit," said Boyd. "By collecting, recycling, and selling gently-used items in our retail stores, we are able to fund our mission-based programs that are available free of charge to the local community. I encourage the Sewell community to open their hearts and closets to Goodwill to assist us in rebuilding the Sewell store," he added.

A Brighter Future with the Helms Academy at Goodwill Industries of Southern NJ & Philadelphia

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/11/2021 -- Many terms accurately describe Goodwill Industries, as they offer more than just medical supplies: they're a retail store, a donation center, a way for businesses to outsource light work, and a job training provider. The nonprofit organization has reached out to many individuals since its founding in 1902, and with time, has made numerous contributions to American society, including Goodwill's Helms Academy.

Goodwill Industries of Southern NJ & Philadelphia has partnered with Camden Community College, the Community College of Philadelphia, Drexel, Rutgers, and Temple University to assist adult students with pursuing their high school diplomas. Those without a high school degree earn less pay than individuals who complete high school and considerably less than college graduates. Goodwill's Helms Academy and its partners aim to help adults succeed in their studies for a chance at a more promising future.

Staff at Goodwill's Helms Academy have flexible scheduling to ensure that their adult students are able to incorporate their education into their busy lives. Additionally, they can prepare for continuing their education at the university level by taking up to 30 college credits and receiving a referral for financial aid from Goodwill's Helms Academy.

Goodwill's Helms Academy's care for their students is a testament to their dedication to their organization's mission, as well as Goodwill's desire to change lives for the better.

Goodwill Industries of Southern NJ & Philadelphia Encourages Patrons to Shop, Donate, and Much More Throughout 2021

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/02/2021 -- Goodwill Industries of Southern NJ & Philadelphia encourages individuals who want to support their communities to visit their secondhand stores in New Jersey and the surrounding area. Goodwill is a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing lives in their communities through job training and education. Those who want to support this mission should consider donating gently used items, shopping in Goodwill stores, or hiring a graduate from the Goodwill job training program.

Goodwill Industries of Southern NJ & Philadelphia places donations from individuals who would like to get rid of their gently used belongings at the core of its mission. Goodwill donation centers accept gently used books, movies, clothing, exercise equipment, wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, jewelry, shoes, and more, which are then sold in Goodwill's secondhand stores. Donating these items allows individuals who would like to free up space in their homes while simultaneously offering others the opportunity to give the items a new life.

If an individual doesn't have any items to donate, they can still support Goodwill's efforts to improve the community through financial donations or shopping at the secondhand stores run by Goodwill. Monetary donations provide direct support to Goodwill's efforts while shopping at its stores will provide an opportunity for individuals to access quality secondhand goods while helping to fund the education programs that Goodwill prides itself on.

Finally, if an individual cannot make it into a store, he or she can consider hiring a graduate from Goodwill's job training program. Goodwill's educational programs allow individuals who have difficulties getting on the job training to get the skills they need to find a meaningful role within their communities, and hiring graduates provides an opportunity for them to put those skills into practice.

Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia Is Perfect for Decorating a Dorm Room on a Budget

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/03/2020 -- It's that time of year again. College students and parents have already begun taking inventory of everything at home that needs to be packed up for the new academic year, and whatever else still needs to be purchased to make a dorm room feel like home. Luckily, college students don't have to look too far to find their dorm room necessities. Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia is the perfect place to find dorm room furniture and decorations on a budget.

Since dorms and college apartments offer limited space, most students are always looking for compact furniture that can serve multiple purposes. Goodwill carries great finds for space-saving furniture and appliances, such as small dressers, nightstands, and mini-fridges. These items can easily fit in a dorm room without making the space feel cramped and cluttered. Plus, Goodwill carries a variety of decorative items that can bring any college dorm to life.

Furthermore, college students can also shop for professional clothing that doesn't break the bank. As these young professionals engage in more class presentations, job interviews, and internships, a professional wardrobe is a must for making a good impression. Goodwill has a great selection of gently-used professional clothing for a quarter of the price of department stores.

Local college students can have peace of mind knowing that their safety remains a top priority at Goodwill, as secondhand stores throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania are doubling down on cleaning and sanitation efforts by continuously disinfecting donations, frequently touched surfaces, and shopping carts throughout operating hours.

Shopping at Goodwill stores is about more than just finding great deals on necessities and accessories; each sale helps to fund job training programs and career services that help those with disabilities and disadvantages attain marketable job skills to get to work.

Donations are the first step in keeping this program successful. Anyone who would like to donate gently-used clothing, furniture, electronics, kitchenware, or other household items, is encouraged to stop by their local Goodwill "pop and drop" donation center for contact-free donation drop-offs.
These programs are especially crucial in the current economic climate, with millions of workers filing for unemployment across the country. Even while the pandemic wreaked havoc on area businesses, Goodwill's Helms Academy offered free online learning opportunities to help adults ages 18 and older work toward earning their high school diplomas. Helms Academy also provided assistance to students learning at home in subjects ranging from algebra to English.

Additionally, Goodwill provided free Microsoft Office training in Burlington and Camden Counties to help participants learn, or sharpen, essential computer skills.

These are just a few examples of Goodwill's many job training programs, which strive to provide opportunity and hope during turbulent and uncertain times. Donations are essential for keeping these programs strong and growing.
Goodwill's Philadelphia and New Jersey Stores Reopen for Business After COVID-19 Closures

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/16/2020 -- After closing for three months due to the COVID-19 crisis, Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia is excited to announce the reopening of its stores throughout New Jersey and the Philadelphia area. Goodwill's New Jersey locations opened their doors on June 15, 2020, while stores in Philadelphia reopened on June 9.

As COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease and local shoppers proceed with caution to their favorite secondhand stores in New Jersey and the surrounding region, Goodwill promises its customers a clean, safe shopping environment, and offers them countless bargains on new and gently used clothing, books, furniture, and household items. Goodwill received an influx of donations during the pandemic to help fill its stores with quality merchandise.

Moving forward, Goodwill's stores in New Jersey will be open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and every Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Philadelphia stores are open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. All stores are still accepting donations through "pop and drop" procedures, through which donors can drive up to the donation site, pop their trunks, and let Goodwill employees unload their donations with no physical contact.

For a complete listing of Goodwill locations, please visit https://goodwillnj.org/store-locator/.

As the entire community fights COVID-19 together, Goodwill President & CEO Mark B. Boyd is proud of his team's extraordinary efforts to help keep stores sanitized and ensure customers' safety. Each Goodwill store now has an Environmental Technician on site to make sure all hard surfaces and shopping carts are continually disinfected throughout operating hours. A Goodwill Ambassador is also on hand to oversee store occupancy, social distancing practices, and the use of masks and other protective gear. Additionally, Goodwill uses fogger machines twice a week after stores have closed to perform a heavy-duty disinfection of the premises.

According to Boyd: "Goodwill is 110% ready to welcome shoppers back into its stores. We have done our due diligence in planning for this reopening since the day we were shut down. The safety of our employees, shoppers, and donors has always been our top priority."

Because Goodwill remained open for "pop and drop" donations throughout the pandemic, area residents brought in an unprecedented amount of donations for the nonprofit organization to sell. Goodwill sells donations in its retail stores in order to fund job training programs, and career services that help people living with disabilities and disadvantages find work — a crucial service during the current economic downturn.

Individuals who would like more information about the reopening of Goodwill stores or how to donate used clothing and household items to the Goodwill cause are encouraged to visit the Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia website or contact the organization today.

Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia Offers Creative Tips for Cleaning out a Home While Sheltering in Place

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/29/2020 -- Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia offers help for area residents trying to declutter their homes while "sheltering in place" during the coronavirus crisis. Goodwill donation sites remain open throughout the region, and staff members continue to welcome contributions of used household items and clothing that remains in good condition.

Deciding what to donate can be challenging and even overwhelming when faced with basements, attics, closets, and drawers filled with years worth of excess clutter. Coming up with a creative cleanout plan can help the process feel more palatable and even enjoyable for a family.

One idea is to designate a Family Fashion Show Day, on which every member of the family tries on all the clothing in his or her closet. The rest of the family then helps decide whether the outfit is a keeper, bound for the trash bin, or a donation item. On that day, every participant should be required to designate at least 10 articles of clothing to donate.

Another fun tip is to combine storage with home decor, either hanging shelves in a bedroom to display certain keepsakes that have been boxed up on a closet floor or taking up drawer space. Consider painting an old bookshelf or hutch and using that opportunity to sort through old books, videos, and CDs, again choosing ones to keep, throw away, and donate.

The garage is a common stronghold for clutter, and going through old items can be made less of a chore with an open door, letting in fresh air and sunshine, and upbeat music. To make the best use of limited floor space, try hanging bicycles on the wall or bundles of sporting equipment from the ceiling.

Self-quarantining in a home full of excess clutter can add additional stress to an already difficult situation. However, making the time for a whole-house cleanout and committing to donate old clothing and household items to Goodwill can alleviate some of that strain.
Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia Offers Decluttering Tips for Homeowners During COVID-19 Outbreak

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/16/2020 -- Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia has announced that all donation centers in New Jersey, with the exception of the Columbus, NJ, location, will remain open during the coronavirus pandemic. Area residents who find themselves confined to their homes amid excess clutter are encouraged to do some spring cleaning and donate items they no longer use.

Decluttering is an incredibly productive way to spend extra time at home, and experts say that a less-crowded living space helps to reduce stress. By donating unused clothing and household items to Goodwill, homeowners can break free from their unnecessary clutter and support a local nonprofit organization at the same time.

Sorting through years' worth of clutter may seem like an overwhelming challenge. However, starting small — for example, blocking out 15 or 20 minutes each day — helps to make the project seem more manageable. To organize the project, make a preliminary checklist of rooms and categories — for example, "bedroom closet" and "kitchen tools" — that need to be covered.

Decluttering experts recommend following a 12-12-12 method that consists of choosing 12 items to throw away, 12 to donate, and 12 to put back where they belong. Another useful strategy is to assign four boxes or trash bags to each room of a home. One should be labeled "trash," one "keep," one "donate," and one "re-locate" to another room. Go through each room and divvy up clutter by placing items in each of the receptacles.

Gently used items placed in the "donate" box can be taken to Goodwill, provided they can be found on the list of acceptable donations. Goodwill uses donations to fund job training and employment programs for members of the community living with disabilities and disadvantages.

To keep donors and staff healthy and safe, Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia is practicing #socialdistancedonating by implementing "pop and drop" procedures at all donation centers. Donors can simply drive up to the location, pop their trunk, and drop off their items without getting out of the car. Individuals can also donate new unopened medical supplies at donation centers throughout the area, including at Goodwill Home Medical Equipment (300 Benigno Blvd. in Bellmawr, NJ.)

Visit the Goodwill website for a full list of donation centers throughout the area, and please contact the company for more information.

Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey & Philadelphia Continuing to Accept Donations During the COVID-19 Crisis

Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia Offers Spring Cleaning Tips for Homeowners

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/09/2020 -- Spring is coming soon, and the change in seasons is a great time to do some vigorous house cleaning. Homeowners throughout Southern New Jersey and the Greater Philadelphia area can free their living space of unnecessary clutter and put their gently used household items to good use by donating them to Goodwill.

Individuals wishing to donate used clothing, toys, books, kitchenware, furniture, and other household items that are still in good condition should visit one of the many convenient Goodwill donation sites throughout the region.

Once the proper donation site has been identified, homeowners should commence sorting through their belongings and deciding what to keep and what to donate. This must be done before performing essential spring cleaning tasks like vacuuming, dusting, and scrubbing the house from top to bottom.

Sifting through drawers full of clothes and closets full of clutter can be very time-consuming, particularly in large homes, so it's important for a homeowner to set aside ample time in the household schedule for the job. The entire family should be involved in the process, lending both their hands and their voice. Let the children know that if they don't participate, some of their beloved items could end up on the donation pile.

All rooms in the house should be surveyed, including kitchens and bathrooms, as well as any storage areas such as basement crawl spaces and attics. Any items that are torn, broken, soiled, or have suffered insect infiltration or water damage should be discarded, as only items in good condition can be donated to Goodwill — and if they can't be fixed, they're just taking up space.

Used furniture and household goods that one family no longer needs can find a new home and make another family happy. Donations also help Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia provide special needs individuals with employment opportunities.
Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia Transforms Lives by Putting People to Work

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/09/2020 -- People all over Southern New Jersey and throughout the Philadelphia area know that when they donate their used clothing and household goods to Goodwill, those old items will find new life when they are sold to a new owner at bargain prices. However, many people who donate aren't aware of just how Goodwill uses donations to make a positive, lasting impact on the community.

Goodwill's mission is to provide job training and other career services for individuals living with disabilities or disadvantages. These employment programs help give special needs individuals the skills and tools they need to thrive in the workforce, to achieve independence and experience the sense of fulfillment that comes with holding a job and earning a salary.

To fund their programs and carry out their mission, Goodwill accepts donations of gently used furniture, clothing, toys, books, kitchenware, medical equipment and more, then sells these quality items for deeply discounted prices at various Goodwill stores in Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia. Proceeds go directly to helping area residents with special needs train for and find employment.

As a non profit, community-based organization, putting people to work is a passion for Goodwill, and it has been for the past 72 years. Unlike some charities that sell donated items to a third party and receive only a percentage of their value, Goodwill applies all donations to funding its employment programs.

Goodwill's Valentine's Weekend Bridal Sale Kicks off February 8th

Maple Shade, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/31/2020 -- The 11-year running of the brides tradition in South Jersey continues at Goodwill's Annual Valentine's Bridal Sale, starting Saturday, February 8, 2020. The sale will take place at Goodwill's Pennsauken Store, located at 5461 Route 70. Doors open at 9 a.m.

The nonprofit agency's highly anticipated sale will feature more than 450 new and gently-used gowns by designers such as Jasmine, Maggie Sotero, Alfred Angelo and Allure, just to name a few. Gently used gowns start at $49; new gowns at $99. No gown is priced higher than $299. Beyond wedding gowns, the sale will include special occasion dresses, bridesmaid gowns, flower girl dresses, shoes, veils/tiaras, accessories, jewelry and more.

The sale will run on Saturday (February 8) from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday (February 9) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entry tickets are issued to brides during early hours of the sale for crowd control purposes.

Goodwill's Bridal Room will be open for media previews by appointment only, starting Wednesday, February 5.

In years past, brides from the City to the Jersey Shore and as far away as Long Island line up outside The Goodwill Store in the wee hours of the morning to get first dibs in finding their dream bridal gown at the lowest price point possible.

"We learned quickly in the first couple of years of this sale that crowd control was needed," said Goodwill President & CEO Mark B. Boyd. "It's a special day for brides so we closely monitor how many brides enter the Bridal Room. Seeing the first bunch of brides come running into the store with their entourage is always an exciting moment. Even more exciting is when we hear that first bride say yes to the dress!"

Beyond saving brides valuable dollars, this annual event serves very much as a fundraiser for Goodwill. Proceeds from the sale fund Goodwill's job training programs and career services that help local residents with disabilities and disadvantages get to work including The Helms Academy. Here, adults 18 and older can earn their high school diploma 100% tuition free while simultaneously earning college credits. According to Boyd, Goodwill is all about giving a hand up, not a hand out. "We provide local residents with the marketable job skills needed to compete in the evolving workplace," he said.

Cash and credit cards are accepted as payment. Coupons are not accepted on bridal attire. All sales are final. The snow date for the sale is February 15-16.

Goodwill collects donated gowns from area bridal shops all year round in preparation for this annual sale. In turn, brides have uncovered gowns worth up to $5,000. Goodwill offers these tips to brides who plan to come to the sale:

* Arrive early for the best selection of gowns but for a less chaotic shopping experience, come after 12 p.m.
* Wear a bodysuit, sports bra or swimsuit underneath clothes to expedite the "trying on" process. Dressing rooms are available but this sale typically draws a crowd!
* Bring a friend or loved one to provide you with that ever important second opinion. Prior to the sale, show them photos from magazines of gowns you like so that they can help you pick from the racks.
* Pack light for the day (a small clutch vs a bulky purse). Gowns are heavy and bulky!
* Avoid wearing make-up. Every bit shows on white.
* Keep in mind that most gowns, new or used, need alterations. Letting a hem out or sides taken in can be easily done by an experienced seamstress.
* Be considerate. A gown not right for you might be on the top of someone else's list. If you don't want a gown, give it to a Goodwill employee or place it back on the proper rack.

Like Goodwill on Facebook (facebook.com/GoodwillNJ) for a special sneak preview of gowns to be sold.

Think beyond the wedding. Wedding dresses can be made into christening gowns, too. And for prom goers, there are many formalwear gowns in store.
