Skookil Express Reunion Concert Set for October 5

Legendary Philadelphia bluegrass band returns to Sellersville Theater

Sellersville, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/08/2008 -- Skookil Express was the band that helped introduce Philadelphia to bluegrass 35 years ago, and the group is getting back together for a one-night-only reunion performance at the Sellersville Theater (www.st94.com) at 7:30 PM on Sunday, October 5, 2008.

Skookil Express was founded by John Stey in 1973, and was a fixture in the Philadelphia live music scene. The group played weekly at the Wheel Pump Inn in Erdenheim and at the Bryn Mawr Beef and Ale, where more than 70,000 people paid the cover charge to hear them play. They also shared their stage with many famous national bluegrass bands as they passed through the area. Skookil Express fans got to hear groups such as JD Crowe and the New South, Buck White and the Down Home Folks, Larry Sparks and the Lonesome Ramblers, the Bluegrass Alliance with Vince Gill, and Ricky Skaggs and Boone Creek.

The various musicians who played with John Stey as part of Skookil Express reads like a who's who of Philadelphia bluegrass music. They included Bob (Tanner) Tangrea, Rich Gerlach, Rob (Bo) Frazer, Wannamaker Lewis (Andy Applebaum), Rich Kalikow, and Ed Lick. Former band members from across the country are returning to take part in this reunion performance.

An added feature of the concert will be a silent auction of two brand new instruments, donated by Silver Sponsor Ibanez Guitars (www.ibanez.com). Skookil Express was featured on an Ibanez bluegrass promotional poster in the 1970s. The AW800RNT acoustic guitar comes with a hardshell case, and the M522SBS is the company's flagship F5-style mandolin. Both will be sold to the highest bidder the night of the concert to help defray the costs of producing the concert.

Information about the band, including a history, photos, music clips, and much more is available at the band's Web site, http://www.skookilexpress.com. Tickets are available through the Sellersville Theater Web site (http://www.st94.com/music/2008_10.html#express), or by phone at 215-257-5808, or at the theater box office at Main and Temple Streets in Sellersville, PA.

Weekly HDTV Price Report Is New and Improved

Professor Poor’s Intelligence Report Now Tracks Individual Models

Perkasie, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/26/2007 -- Since November 2005, display industry expert Alfred Poor has published "Professor Poor's Weekly Price Intelligence Report" at his HDTV Resource Center site at http://hdtvprofessor.com. Each week, the report lists all the advertised prices for HDTVs from all the major national retailers. Now the report has been redesigned to make it even more useful to people shopping for HDTVs.

"I provided information from each retailer sorted by display size and price," said Poor. "This helped readers of the report to compare prices quickly. But then I got feedback from readers that in addition to the brand and technology information, they also wanted to know the specific product model that was advertised."

As a result, the "Intelligence Report" has been redesigned. Just for this purpose, he has created a database that lists individual products by model number, and includes the brand name, the size, and the display technology. It also records the resolution offered by the product — 720p or 1080p for HDTVs, EDTV or SDTV for others — and whether or not the model includes a digital tuner which is required to get free, over-the-air broadcasts of HDTV programming.

All of this information is reported for the current week's advertisements, along with the name of the store and its advertised price. The report is published every Tuesday, and is produced as a downloadable file using Adobe Acrobat PDF format, available instantly after purchase from the HDTV Resource Center.

To help launch the expanded version of "Professor Poor's Weekly Price Intelligence Report", it is offered at half the regular price for the next three months. Instead of $9.95 per issue, it is priced at just $5.95. And for a limited time, buyers of the report will also get a $5 discount off Alfred Poor's popular book, "Professor Poor's Guide to Buying HDTV" which is also available online at the HDTV Resource Center.

The site gives consumers access to independent and expert information on HDTV and digital TV technology. The focus is on practical information designed to help consumers make confident buying decisions and avoid making an expensive mistake.

"I spent the past 20 years helping millions of people make sense out of personal computer products," Alfred Poor explained. "I recognized that the same problems of confusing technology and rapidly changing products and features now plague consumers trying to decide on an HDTV purchase. They are confronted by confusing and misleading information. They need a source of expert information that they can understand and trust, so I'm turning my focus from computers to the issues of HDTV and digital television."

One key feature of the site is the HDTV Almanac, which provides daily posts of original content. Alfred Poor not only reports on new developments in television and home entertainment, but also explains their significance in terms that readers can understand and use. The posts are available on the site, as well as via RSS feeds. Another feature is Professor Poor's Truth Patrol, which encourages visitors to send in examples of information published about HDTV products and technology that is misleading, confusing, or just plain wrong.

The site is also the source for Alfred Poor's self-published series of HDTV guides and reference materials. His HDTV and Display Technology Reference Card is available now, as well as his Professor Poor's Weekly Price Report that lists advertised prices at major nationwide retailers. Professor Poor's Guide to Buying HDTV is scheduled for release in a few weeks.

In addition to these materials, the site also lists HDTV resources that are of interest to people looking to purchase HDTVs or related home entertainment products.

For a limited time, a reader survey is on the site at http://hdtvprofessor/HDTVGuideSurvey; the results will be used to shape the content on the site and in the Professor Poor's Guide series. Visitors who complete the survey will receive the HDTV and Display Technology Reference Card free of charge.
