Buzzing 2011 – Beekeeping a Growing Hobby in Georgia

Atlanta, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/15/2010 -- According to Dan Harris of Booger Hill Bee Company "A broad based, increased interest in the honey bee and beekeeping over recent years led me to develop a practical series of classes for the beginner. This was more an accident of demand than anything else. I am passionate about beekeeping and enjoy sharing my experience and knowledge with beginners."

Honey bees have fascinated man for thousands of years. From an environmental perspective the honey bee is important. Honey bees are responsible for the pollination of many essential plants. Without them, these plants simply would not be pollinated, and food production would drastically fall as a direct result. Then of course there is the golden honey and other products such as wax, they produce. Could there be a more useful little creature? No wonder farmers, gardeners and even city dwellers are thinking Beekeeping!

Beekeeping has however become a little more complicated than it was a couple of decades ago. Today we have recently introduced pests and diseases to deal with and becoming a successful beekeeper, whether hobbiest or budding farmer, you are well advised to do some basic training. That is exactly where the Beekeeping Course run by Dan Harris of Booger Hill Bee Company comes to mind.

The courses run at the Smith-Gilbert Garden in Kennesaw and the Georgia State Botanical Gardens in Athens not only cover a full season of beekeeping to expose the beginner to an annual cycle of beekeeping, but the course is also hands on. Starting with classroom lectures, to building of hives, working with bees in the bee yard and finally harvesting honey and winterizing bees in Fall. All round a good grounding that is designed to give a beginner beekeeper a solid start.

"I just love to teach and share the world of these amazing and complicated creatures" says Dan Harris. "Students have varied from early teens to retirees and everything in between. This is definitely an activity that anybody who can life 30 pounds, has a private, sunny and preferably flat piece of garden, can undertake. We are looking forward to a buzzing 2011!"
