Gateway Analytical to Present Advancements in Particle Sizing Research at Pittcon 2011

Gibsonia, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/16/2011 -- Particle size advancements in nasal spray suspensions using Raman chemical imaging will be presented by scientists at Gateway Analytical, March 15-16 at the Pittcon Conference and Expo 2011, the world's largest annual conference and exposition for laboratory science, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

Presentation highlights include:
Surface Wetting of Sample Substrates for Ingredient-Specific Particle Sizing
March 15; Red Area on Exposition Floor — Hall B, Aisle 400
Presented by: Ryan J. Priore, Ph.D., Director of Applications & Contract Services at Gateway Analytical

Accurate knowledge of the active pharmaceutical ingredient particle size is critical for determining the ultimate dissolution rate in the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity. When preparing dried samples of nasal suspensions for ingredient-specific particle sizing (ISPS) utilizing Raman chemical imaging (RCI), the source of particle aggregation or agglomeration is ambiguous. Particles may exist as true agglomerates, or particles may agglomerate during the drying process.

This study demonstrates the advantages of sample substrate pretreatment for the minimization of particles agglomeration during the sample preparation process. RCI for a nasal spray suspension, along with a polystyrene microsphere sizing standard, will be presented.

Sizing Standard Development for Raman Chemical Imaging
March 16, 10:35 a.m.; room 407
Presented by: Ryan J. Priore, Ph.D., Director of Applications & Contract Services at Gateway Analytical

This talk will summarize the progress made in utilizing NIST traceable polystyrene microspheres as a particle sizing calibration standard for wide-field RCI of micron sized Orally Inhaled and Nasal Drug Product particles. Wide-field RCI particle size distributions will be discussed for various morphological parameters. A representative nasal spray sample will be reviewed to demonstrate the application of this methodology.

Particle Size Study to Be Presented at DDL21

Gibsonia, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/23/2010 -- Gateway Analytical will be presenting research findings from a validation study that applied NIST-traceable size standards to data obtained from the ingredient-specific particle size analysis, an approach that uses wide-field Raman chemical imaging (RCI) to determine drug-specific particle measurements, of nasal spray samples. Results will be presented, Dec. 8-9 at Drug Delivery to the Lungs 21 (DDL21), Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

The study, titled Application of NIST-Traceable Size Standards to Ingredient-Specific Particle Sizing, used Raman chemical images of Rhinocort Aqua® droplets to detect and measure particles of its active ingredient, budesonide. A calibration model was then created utilizing Raman chemical images of NIST-traceable polystyrene microsphere sizing standards and applied to the Rhinocort RCI data, which showed promising results.

In addition to presenting research findings at DDL21, Gateway Analytical will also be exhibiting at booth 37 throughout its duration. As Europe's premier conference and exhibition dedicated to pulmonary and nasal drug delivery, DDL21 will feature such topics as methods for investigating in vivo pulmonary drug depositions, ways to increase success of inhaled products early in development and advances in formulation and analytical science.
