Thank God for the Shelter 10-City Tour

Inspirational Speaker Versandra Kennebrew Knows How To Overcome The Struggle of Homelessness & Is Teaching Others To Do The Same

Detroit, MI -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/13/2011 -- In a study conducted in 2007, The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty estimated that annual homelessness in America was approximately 3.5 million people, of which 1.35 million were children. No one ever imagines themselves being a part of these types of statistics and yet an increasing number of people are finding themselves in this distressed situation every day.

Take for instance, Versandra Kennebrew, a working class single woman who had to take refuge in a Detroit area homeless shelter in 2003 with the undertaking of restoring her life during an economic crisis that struck her with a very hard blow. Despite her efforts to work hard building a business, she found herself in a place where she lost almost everything she owned.

Fortunately, Versandra's story didn't end there. In a 9-month period, she was able to pick herself up from what may have been her lowest state, and now has become a mouthpiece for others who are struggling to get back up again from the sting of homelessness. It wasn't a smooth road, but she is a testament to the fact that you can turn your life around if you have a firm desire to take action.

It is imperative that stories like this are shared and that strategies are formulated to treat these crucial issues in a holistic and sustainable manner, to reach permanent and lasting solutions for our homeless communities today; and Versandra Kennebrew is one person who has an unyielding desire to make that happen!

On a national scale, homelessness is a very important issue that must continue to be addressed. It is affecting people of all backgrounds. Families with children, single adults, elderly individuals, veterans, and youth all experience homelessness. This social-economic problem exists in rural areas, small towns, suburban neighborhoods, and big cities.

In effort to address the issue Versandra Kennebrew is doing a 10-City Tour, where she will be film screening her new stage play, "Thank God for the Shelter LIVE" in local colleges and universities across the country. It's a homeless awareness and sensitivity film that reaches out to college students who are studying in the mental health and human services fields as well as prime communities in need of such information. Visit her site to learn more.

Please join Versandra in the mission to bring awareness to the new face of homelessness in America by bringing Thank God for the Shelter LIVE to your students and staff.

The Hunger Grows With Residents of Detroit, Time to Close the Gap

“That All May Eat . . . Community Food Donation Program” Is Seeking Help To Feed 50,000 City of Detroit Residents.

Taylor, MI -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/05/2010 -- "That All May Eat… Community Food Donation Program" program partners announced today that they are in serious need of help to feed not just the homeless population of Detroit but even the working class. Michigan accounts for 50% of the U.S. unemployment rate, forcing many to be on the waiting list for food stamps. While living on unemployment or significantly reduced pay, many families still have the same financial obligations (i.e. home mortgage, bills, prescriptions refill and etc.) forcing them to make hard budget cuts. When families are forced to make budget cuts, food is the first to get reduced.

Many households have to consider strategies on how to make ends meet in this tough economy. Many children go to bed hungry and are forced to rely on school lunches to fill their stomachs. Last year this program was able to feed over 2500 families and we ask for the Metro Detroit area to come together again to make food donation on November 13, 2010 an even bigger success.

It is predicted by 2012 there will be a 300 million dollar food gap and this program is trying to close that gap now. This program exists due to the help from the following partnerships: Detroit Association of Black Organizations (DABO), Detroit Cares Alternative School, Conant Avenue United Methodist Church, Holy Hope Heritage Church –Baptist, Independent Retailer Association (IRA), and New Destiny Baptist Church. People live very busy lives these days and for these partners to make time for such an important cause is proof of what is important to each of them.

The increase with community concerns and the support of donations will help illustrate the importance of community support and creating a solution. This program has developed a benefit fundraiser to feed Detroit families by watching Tyler Perry's New film "For Colored Girls" and tickets are being sold at the request of a $10 donation. This event will take place on November 13, 2010 at the Spotlight Theatre located 22265 Eureka Taylor, MI 48180 at 11am. Come early for hot breakfast and a live broadcast at 8:30AM-10:00AM with host Rev. Horace Sheffield who will discuss this Community Food Donation Program. Breakfast will be served during the live broadcast and everyone is invited.

You can purchase your movie ticket online at http://www.thatallmayeat.eventbrite.com or contact Charmaine Williams at 313.397.3652.
