The Westwood School Students Earn Second Place in Future City Competition

The Westwood School opened in 1986, providing a Montessori education and currently serves 250 students aged 2 years old through High School.

Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/02/2011 -- Seventh and eighth grade students at The Westwood School placed second at the 19th Annual Future City® Competition North Texas Regionals, hosted by the National Engineers Week Foundation. The Westwood School was one of 57 North Texas teams which created a city that answers the prompt: Providing a Reliable and Effective Health Care System That Improves a Sick, Injured or Disabled Patient's Quality of Life and Comfort. Using this guide, students were asked to provide a research essay describing their ideas, a second written work describing the key features of their planned city, a computer designed city model, and a physical model using recycled parts with at least one moving feature and a maximum budget of $100.

For Future City®, Westwood students designed a fictional city in Sweden called Styrkapotamia, "strength between rivers". The health solution for their city centered around promoting healthy lifestyles through exercise and preventive medicine, as well as a micromagnetic dome covering most of the city to combat subarctic temperatures. Styrkapotamia's planning and construction was a team effort by all Middle School students, and was presented to judges by Sheridan Cole (7th grade), Heather Morgan (7th grade) and Shiv Govindji (8th grade).

By placing second, Westwood students received $750 for The Westwood School and individual gift cards for themselves. The Styrkapotamia team also received special awards for "Best Essay" and "Architectural Achievement – Sponsored by the American Institute of Architects of Fort Worth".
