Prominent Senior Care Company, Home Care Assistance, Launches 12 Days of Caring Campaign

In celebration of the holiday season, Home Care Assistance is committed to community education, appreciation and volunteerism throughout the month of December

Palo Alto, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/05/2011 -- Home Care Assistance, North America's leading provider of in-home care for seniors, is proud to announce the 2011 launch of their annual 12 Days of Caring holiday campaign. In celebration of the holiday season, Home Care Assistance dedicates 12 days throughout the month of December to education, appreciation and volunteerism.

The 12 Days of Caring program gives thanks to the thousands of Home Care Assistance caregivers who dedicate their lives to the well-being of seniors; the program also engages local communities through charitable giving and volunteerism. In addition, Home Care Assistance sponsors special programs and events to demonstrate appreciation to Home Care Assistance clients and the broader senior community.

"12 Days of Caring is an important opportunity for us to show appreciation to our incredible caregivers and inspirational clients, our colleagues in the health and wellness community, and our communities at large," said Lily Sarafan, President of Home Care Assistance. "While education and philanthropy are cornerstones of the Home Care Assistance Mission, we are particularly proud to dedicate December to giving and volunteerism throughout the United States and Canada."

Home Care Assistance's 12 Days of Caring campaign includes volunteer days at local food banks and shelters, donations to senior meal delivery programs, partnerships with local non-profit organizations to collect gifts for those in need, and special appreciation events for caregivers.

Through this campaign, Home Care Assistance offices across North America spread holiday cheer while continuing to promote education around issues of aging. Due to geographic or time limitations, the winter holiday season may be one of the few opportunities throughout the year that children have to spend time with their aging parents. Local care managers are on call to address family questions and concerns, including how to arrange for respite care during the holidays or tips on setting up a family meeting to discuss the possibility of in-home care.

For more information about the 12 Days of Caring Campaign, visit 12daysofcaring.com. To speak with a local care manager about respite care or other senior care questions, please visit homecareassistance.com or call 1-866-454-8346.
The AEDA is a program renowned for raising Alzheimer's awareness and promoting early detection of the disease.
Healthy Holidays: Seniors Need to Stay Active and Engaged

Seniors look to Home Care Assistance’s Balanced Care Method, which promotes smart lifestyle choices and maximum independence, to stay healthy this holiday season

Palo Alto, CA -- (SBWIRE) --11/25/2011 -- Home Care Assistance, North America's premier provider of in-home care for seniors, urges aging adults to stay active in order to enjoy good health during this year's holiday season. While nonagenarians, a person whose age is in the nineties, may not be able to go "dashing through the snow" as fast as they did in their youth, they can make an effort to see friends, do volunteer work, play a rousing game of Scrabble or even knit holiday sweaters for their nieces and nephews. Extra servings of pumpkin pie, however, are best avoided.

Each of those actions during the festive season can lead to a better quality of life for seniors, according to studies of elders in Okinawa which boasts more centenarians per 100,000 people than anywhere else on Earth. To ensure older adults throughout North America can benefit from the findings of these studies, Home Care Assistance developed its Balanced Care Method™ to reflect the five components of healthy longevity identified among the Okinawans: healthy nutrition, physical and mental stimulation and a sense of calmness and purpose.

"The holidays are actually a great time for seniors and the people who care for them to focus on healthy lifestyle choices that enhance aging," says Kathy Johnson, PhD, CMC and CEO of Home Care Assistance. "We incorporated these choices into our Balanced Care Method™ because our goal is to promote maximum independence and a healthier lifespan for our clients."

To illustrate how the five aspects of healthy aging can be woven into holiday celebrations, Johnson offers these suggestions:

Physical activity: Taking a walk after a hearty holiday meal is a good idea for those of any age, but it is particularly beneficial to seniors. Even aging adults who are less ambulatory can take part in some form of exercise, whether it is lifting their feet repeatedly while seated in a sturdy chair, or raising their arms skyward several times in a row.

Healthy diet: Comfort foods drawn from family or ethnic traditions are especially enjoyed by seniors during the holidays. However, the recipes for these dishes should be adapted to the palates and dietary needs of aging adults. Lean meats, such as turkey breast, are readily available during this time of year and serve as a healthy alternative to red meat for seniors. Also limit the intake of sweets and desserts that accompany celebrations – except perhaps for antioxidant rich dark chocolate. Other "super foods" for seniors that are beneficial to include in holiday meals are are blueberries, flax seed, carrots, eggs, nuts and salmon.

Sharp minds: While dementia and short-term memory loss are common among seniors, mentally-stimulating activities can help them delay, or possibly even prevent, the onset of these conditions. Designing holiday festivities around skill-based games, such as Scrabble, checkers, backgammon or Boggle, not only makes the event fun for party-goers, but these activities can also help seniors maintain cognitive function.

Engaging in pattern-following crafts like knitting or needlepoint also stimulates the brains of older adults in ways that can help keep them mentally fit.

Social ties: Though the holiday season can bring back memories of lost loved ones, this time of year also offers numerous opportunities for seniors to engage with other people, whether through social gatherings, phone calls, e-mail or greeting cards. Research shows that social ties keep people healthy by providing emotional support; limiting stress levels; and helping seniors maintain an irreplaceable level of independence. While group activities in family homes or senior centers can be the centerpiece of holiday celebrations, aging adults can also benefit from receiving a daily phone call or email because it helps them feel connected to those they care about.

Calmness and Purpose: For some seniors, participating in a religious service helps them maintain a calm center and focus on their life purpose; while others may prefer practices such as yoga or meditation. The holidays also offer ample opportunities for older adults to fulfill a purpose by volunteering at local organizations and nonprofits. Sharing personal stories or reading special holiday stories to younger family members and friends can also help seniors maintain a sense of connectivity to those around them.

Home Care Assistance Announces New Book: The Handbook of Live-In Care

Written specifically for the growing number of family caregivers, The Handbook of Live-In Care provides practical, how-to guidance on caring for an elderly loved one

Palo Alto, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/28/2011 -- Home Care Assistance, North America's premier provider of in-home senior care, is excited to announce its newest book, The Handbook of Live-in Care. This is the second book published in the Home Care Assistance senior wellness series, following the wildly popular Happy to 102: The Best Kept Secrets to a Long and Happy Life.

Written by Dr. Kathy N. Johnson, Dr. James H. Johnson and Lily Sarafan of Home Care Assistance, The Handbook draws from their combined 28 years of experience in senior care. Covering everything from the psychology of homebound seniors to caregiver tips on nutrition, exercise and oral healthcare for seniors, The Handbook is the first definitive resource for family caregivers.

"This year, family caregivers will provide 12 billion hours of care for their loved ones, and the number continues to grow," said Lily Sarafan. "These family caregivers, though well-intentioned, are often inexperienced with the needs of an aging senior. As a result, family caregivers are seven times more likely than the average adult to suffer from stress or depression. Our book aims to provide these caregivers with a how-to guide for their most common questions and challenges."

"Caregiving takes a tremendous emotional toll," said Dr. Kathy Johnson, Founder and CEO of Home Care Assistance. "Adult sons and daughters are especially vulnerable as they balance the needs of their elder loved ones, their families and children and their social and work responsibilities. This book will help them manage the stress associated with caregiving and recognize when it may be time to hire a home care agency."

The Handbook of Live-In Care: A Guide for Caregivers, can be purchased online at Amazon.com.

Hospital Sitter Requests on the Rise

Jeff Schweikert, owner of Home Care Assistance of St. Louis, weighs in on the the role of Hospital Sitters in a patient's recovery process and why these requests are increasing nationally.

Palo Alto, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/20/2011 -- Hospital Sitters, supplied by agencies like Home Care Assistance of St. Louis, bring more than peace of mind to patients and their families

Home Care Assistance of St. Louis, a leading provider of non-medical home care for seniors, has experienced a significant increase in requests for caregivers to serve as hospital sitters over the past few years, a trend that spans across hospitals and home care agencies nationwide. The increased use of hospital sitters results from the growing senior population, longer lifespans, geographically dispersed family members and limitations in the quality of care provided by hospitals due to reduced staff and expenses.

"Hospital sitters can provide a patient with comfort and peace of mind during their hospital stay," said Jeff Schweikert President and CEO of Home Care Assistance of St. Louis. "A hospital sitter provides companionship and provides assistance with personal care, mobility exercise and other activities to keep patients safe and comfortable while also providing the patient with someone who can help speed up their recovery progress."

A sitter offers round-the-clock companionship, which improves patient health and safety (they can summon a nurse immediately if there is a medical emergency), reduces patient boredom or depression (they converse with, read to, or run errands for the client) and allows family members to go home and rest, knowing their loved one will not be left alone. Hospital sitters are also often hired when family members do not live close by. Individuals with impaired mental states like those with Alzheimer's and dementia, or individuals with infections such as a urinary tract infection (UTI), benefit immensely from a hospital sitter because they can be monitored around the clock.

"There is an increased need and request for one-on-one care or sitters in these facilities," said Dr. David B. Carr, MD. "It is critical that these individuals are highly qualified, well trained, and are in tune to the specific and unique needs of these patients that are at high risk for falls, fractures, dehydration and pneumonia. Any intervention where a sitter would be allowed to intervene and assist in the prevention of these common issues in our older adults would make a major impact on reducing these complications and the risk for iatrogenic illness."

Hospital sitters also play an important role once the patient is discharged. Many sitters go home with the patient to assist with their transition and recovery. The sitter becomes familiar with the type of care the patient needs and the rehabilitative exercises and other recommendations that need to be followed. The hospital sitter has now transitioned to become the patient's caregiver.

Home Care Assistance Achieves Prestigious Ranking in Entrepreneur's Franchise 500 Two Years in a Row

Jumping nearly 130 places on the list, Home Care Assistance continues to grow at an astonishing pace

Palo Alto, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/06/2011 -- Home Care Assistance (http://franchise.homecareassistance.com/), a senior care company specializing in homebound care and live-in care, was ranked 251 on the list of Entrepreneur's Franchise 500®, compared to last year's ranking of 380 – a significant increase in position on a list that already represents the best franchises worldwide. Entrepreneur's Franchise 500® judges all companies on the same criteria regardless of size. Important factors used to compare franchise operations include but are not limited to: financial strength, stability, growth rate, size of system, startup costs and percentage of terminations.

"We are thrilled to be listed as a Franchise 500® company again in 2011," said Jack Johnson, Vice President of Franchising for Home Care Assistance. "Even more exciting, however, is how much our ranking has improved. I attribute this to the quality franchise owners throughout our system who are beating their competitors and thriving in their local markets. As a result, we have seen a significant amount of growth in the company as a whole, both financially and geographically."

Home Care Assistance Franchise has grown to over 50 locations in the United States and Canada in just five years. 83% of the locations that opened in 2008 grew in 2009. Of these, almost 70% grew more than 20% year to year. This past year, Home Care Assistance grew 27% as a company, despite an economy that has still not fully rebounded. Specializing in longer hour, live-in home care cases, Home Care Assistance continues to excel across the senior care franchise vertical due to its unique focus on live-in care (leading to higher, faster profits), its large exclusive territories and a turnkey system for hiring caregivers and acquiring clients. All of this has lead to network-wide weekly client billings nearly four times higher than the industry average.

Lily Sarafan, Chief Operating Officer of Home Care Assistance, shared, "While the recognition we have received through the Franchise500® and numerous other awards is a strong testament to the caliber of our organization, it is the outstanding financial performance and high satisfaction of our franchisees throughout North America that serve as our strongest validation."

Senior home care is one of the most lucrative business opportunities of the foreseeable future. The North American population is growing older at the fastest pace in history, with the number of seniors aged 65 and older expected to exceed the number of children under the age of 15 by 2015. According to the AARP, an overwhelming majority of seniors – 89 percent – would choose to age in their own homes if given the option, which is why home care continues to be the preferred choice for adult children when it comes to finding care for a parent or loved one.

Caregiver Rekindles Holiday Spirit and More for Client

Home Care Assistance caregiver gives the greatest gift this season to her client: connectivity, hope and holiday spirit

Palo Alto, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/29/2010 -- Home Care Assistance St. Louis, a leading international provider of non-medical, in-home senior care, recognizes Mia Hale this month for her compassion and commitment to her client. The client, Pete, was a 56-year-old man with disabilities that lived alone, felt abandoned and disconnected since his mother had recently moved into a skilled nursing facility and did not have any reason to change this attitude. Relying on training she had received in the Balanced Care Method™, Mia was able to re-instill hope and happiness in Pete's life, primarily because of her diligence and encouragement to reconnect him with the outside world. The initiative that Mia took to make her client's life better was exceptionally admiral and exemplifies the high standard of quality care we strive for at Home Care Assistance.

"Mia's work with Pete is a terrific example of the impact and connection a caregiver can make on someone's life," said Jeff Schweikert President and CEO of Home Care Assistance St. Louis. "Because of Mia, Pete now is reconnected with the outside world and, as a result, is very happy and has purpose."

When Mia first started caring for Pete, he was disconnected with the outside world and unmotivated to make any changes to his attitude. Therefore, Mia made it a priority to determine which activities Pete enjoyed that would get him out of his apartment and allow him to interact with others. After discovering that Pete loved Christmas, Mia drove him around to see neighborhood lights, and from there, encouraged him to help decorate his apartment complex. He loved decorating and interacting with the other residents and shortly thereafter decorated his own apartment with Mia's help, complete with a tree. Through this succession of events, Pete's attitude did a 180. He is now a very happy individual who laughs, smiles and participates actively in his community – thanks to Mia's encouragement and support.

"Pete's resurgence into the community after living a life filled with loneliness and little social interaction was incredible to watch," said Mia Hale, Home Care Assistance St. Louis caregiver. "The fact that his days are now filled with friends and laughter makes me so happy. It is the best gift I could have received this year."

Mia, like all other Home Care Assistance caregivers, was trained in The Balanced Care Method™, a proprietary program based on elder studies in the Okinawa region of Japan where life spans over 100 years are not unusual. Those in their 70s, 80s and beyond, enjoy incredibly good health, independence and have the least amount of diseases such as Alzheimer's, dementia and Parkinson's. The Balanced Care Method™ is comprised of five key components: physical activity, healthy diet, mental stimulation, maintaining social ties, calmness and purpose. It is these factors that Mia used as her foundation to encourage Pete to get outdoors and reconnect with his community, which in turn provided him a new calm and gave him a larger purpose in his life.

Home Care Assistance Celebrates Caregivers During National Home Care Aide Week

November’s National Home Care Month reserves a special week, from the 14th-20th, to give recognition to home care aids for their extraordinary commitment

Palo Alto, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/18/2010 -- Home Care Assistance, a leading international provider of non-medical, in-home senior care, celebrates National Home Care Aide Week by honoring all caregivers. The theme for this year's Home Care Aide week is, "Loving Hands and Compassionate Hearts." This week honors caregiving heroes who make a remarkable difference in the lives of patients and the families they serve. The purpose of Home Care Aide week is to bring attention and celebrate those who work and dedicate their life to taking care of others. Their care and compassion makes the lives of those they care for more enjoyable and comfortable.

"We are so very appreciative for the dedication, professionalism and compassion that our caregivers provide clients," said Lily Sarafan, COO of Home Care Assistance. "We want to acknowledge each and every caregiver for their steadfast commitment to providing the highest level of care, day in and day out."

In the United States, there are 43.5 million caregivers that are age 18 and over. This accounts for 19% of all adults that provide care to someone that is over the age of 50. Caregivers provide quality of care to those who wish to age in their own home. And according to AARP, caregivers spend at least 40+ hours providing excellent care to others a week.

For those who do not live near their elderly parent or loved one and have someone who wants to remain at home, Home Care Assistance is a safe and trusted alternative. Caregivers hired provide the highest quality care and are trained in a proprietary program called The Balanced Care Method™. Developed by the staff of PhD geriatric care managers, the home care method is based on the scientifically studied lifestyle choices of the longest and healthiest living people on Earth. Focusing on lifestyle and dietary choices, the Balanced Care Method™ promotes healthy activity, stress reduction and social interaction to help seniors live their best possible lives in the comfort of their own home.

The hiring process for Home Care Assistance's care professionals is meticulous. Every angle is covered from local to national criminal background checks, work authorization clearances, employer reference checks, recognizable work experiences and a proprietary PhD-generated screening system for honesty and conscientiousness.

"Caregivers are the unsung heroes at home," said Dr. Kathy Johnson PhD, CMC, Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Home Care Assistance. "The attentive care and support provided can sometimes go unnoticed, so it makes me very happy that we have this week to honor our caregivers."

Home care aides and caregivers specialize in providing assistance with activities like: daily meal preparation, bathing, grooming, light housekeeping, companionship, assistance to medical appointments, medication reminders, exercise, physical activity, and so forth.

Home Care Assistance Supports Veterans and Offers Aid & Attendance Benefit Pension

Veterans who qualify and are in need of home care can use the pension to help pay for services

Palo Alto, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/12/2010 -- Home Care Assistance, a leading international provider of non-medical, in-home senior care, is offering an Aide & Attendance Benefit Pension Program to veterans who qualify to help pay for home care services. Since the Aide & Attendance pension is not advertised, many veterans and their spouses are unaware that it even exists. In fact, it is estimated that 2 million veterans and their spouses are missing out on this pension.

"Our veterans have done so much for our country so we want to give back in any way we can," said Lily Sarafan, COO of Home Care Assistance. "The Aid & Attendance pension helps to supplement the cost of in-home care for qualified veterans, which relieves the financial burden tremendously."

There are a number of requirements to qualify for the pension, but below are the six major ones needed for veterans to be eligible:

• Served in the military one day during wartime. (Not required to be in battle, just serving during a war).
• Served 90 days or more in active service.
• Had an honorable discharge.
• Veteran or spouse must be 60% or more housebound. This must be certified by an MD.
• Medical expenses must exceed income by 5%.
• Care must begin before the pension is paid.

As veterans age, many will require some type of care. According to a recent national family caregiving study, 17 percent of caregivers provide care for a veteran and 11 percent have served in the armed forces themselves. As a result of the physical and psychological trauma that many veterans previously experienced, they are more likely to suffer from depression and other disorders. Seventy percent of caregivers reported that the veteran they care for experiences depression or anxiety, and 60 percent reported post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), compared to only 28 percent of caregivers nationally whose care recipients suffer from mental or emotional health problems.
