Google Shortener and Its Affect on SEO

We have witnessed the shot in popularity of social media between all age groups in recent years. And it is evident that even Google has gone social!

Bangalore, Karnataka -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/28/2011 -- Google has already implemented "real time search" on its search engine where twitter feeds appear on the search results. By this, it is apparent that social media content should be optimized just as any other online marketing content. Google is using twitter and facebook links as ranking symbols!
For instance look at its list of acquisitions:

• Video Sharing: YouTube

• Social Networking: Orkut

• Blogging : Blogger.com

• Image Sharing: Picasa

• Wiki: Knol

• Social Search: Aardvark

Also we can consider Google Buzz which acts as a social network inside Gmail and Google Wave project.

Let us consider url shortening service widely used on twitter which limits its content to 140 characters and in facebook status updates where 420 characters is the limit.

Whether shortened links used in your webpages are a threat to Search Engine Optimization? Or is that just a misinformation? Do URL shorteners pass anchor text?

Check the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMkltd6dZzU

Google's Matt Cutts addressed the issue in a recent video posted to Google's Webmaster Help YouTube channel stating – "Custom URL shorteners are essentially just like any other redirects". He explains- "If we try to crawl a page, and we see a 301 or permanent redirect, which pretty much all well-behaved URL shorteners (like bit.ly or goo.gl) will do, if we see that 301 then that will pass Page Rank to the final destination." He continues. "The Page Rank will flow through. The anchor text will flow through, and so I wouldn't necessarily worry about that at all."
Being reassured on that let us now dwell more on URL shortening and beyond social media.

1. Your website traffic definitely depends more than only on url keywords!
Consider our browsing behavior. Mostly we find new sites through search engines. But once finding that - if we are to visit it again, we either bookmark it or enter it directly in the address-bar if we remember the url. There is also autocomplete option on our browsers. So featuring a keyword in the url is not a mandatory rule for getting high traffic.

2. Make your links manageable and pretty
If your website has lot of affiliate links, you do not want a messy page there. Url shortening is not only the option but becomes a necessity at this point.

3. Use 301 redirects!
This is interpreted as moved permanently! Refer what Matt Cutt has explained. If you have to change the file names or move the pages around this is considered as safest option. Also it preserves the link juice for your website and never upsets your internet marketing strategy.

4. Using short urls for short term links
Links on twitter tweets and the ones in SMS marketing are meant for short term visibility. If you are using shortened links on your blog or website where a more descriptive link would drive long term traffic you are doing it all wrong!

There is plenty of url shortening service providers out there. Make use of them well where you need very little effort but as and only when the situation demands.

Tips to Improve Link Structure of Your Website

As important off page optimization is for improving the ranking of your website by increasing the reputation of your web pages, on page optimization also plays a crucial role in Search Engine Optimization strategy.

Bangalore, Karnataka -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/17/2011 -- Internal linking structure or navigational structure which is also termed as site architecture must be intelligently planned in order to be in compliance with guidelines set for better SEO results.
Below are some important points to consider:

1. Accessibility: It is always advisable to keep your web pages away from not more than two links. This will help the search spiders to index your pages easily.

2. Categorize your content: Keep a clear navigational menu; this will help spiders as well as human visitors. Categorizing your content into main menu and sub menu will build the relevancy and will boost the value of your website, which is an important aspect of internet marketing. Because, if you fail to convey your message well and in a user friendly way all your efforts will go in vain.

Remember, online visitors have an attention span of a goldfish!

3. Don't overdo the linking! : If any of your webpage contains links to the same page more than necessary times, this will look like spam. Do not make your visitors wonder. Keep your content short & simple, which requires fewer references.

4. Anchor text linking: Use relevant, highly targeted keywords in your internal links. Do not use words like "click here". Instead, keep your visitors informed on where the links take them. Ex: "Download design templates."

5. Meta tags to guide Search spiders: By using robots.txt file you can guide bots on which are the important pages and this will remove the chances of indexing duplicate and irrelevant content. This method helps in increasing your ranking.

6. Broken links hurt! : Always keep a close look on broken links. It is important that all your web pages are error free. This will ensure the credibility of your site. Imagine the impact on your visitors when they landed on very important page on your website and they find the error message. Ecommerce websites must never fail in this aspect, if not- this sure will hurt their internet marketing strategy.

7. Add no-follow attribute: When you know some pages are not very important for your online marketing purpose, such as terms & condition, privacy policy add a "no follow" attribute! This will direct the bots to not to list those pages to avoid wasting the potential ranking power of your website!

8. Get rid of dangling links: You sure don't want search bots to crawl nowhere. Make sure there are no such dangling links which prove to be dead ends for both users and bots. In case if you find any, consider optimizing your internal link structure appropriately.

9. Importance of sitemap: Create a text sitemap and an XML sitemap. This will help the search engine spiders to index your web pages again when modifications have been made on your websites.

Finally, build a website which is user friendly, keeping the above simple tips in mind will surely build the website search engine friendly as well to help you make your search engine optimization campaign successful.

SEO Tools to Calculate and Observe Competitor Traffic

In Internet marketing, getting a sneak peek at your competitor traffic and even predicting who gets his foot in, is no more under wraps, with a range of SEO tools that can predict and monitor this invaluable information that can take your online marketing to a high almost overnight.

Bangalore, Karnataka -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/12/2010 -- Alexa reveals the general traffic trends in your competitor site (up to 5 sites at a time), has a useful interface, does specific data crunching such as number of unique visitors, visits, etc, and presented in a cogent way – all this for free! The catch is traffic charts for sites ranked outside of the top one lakh are beyond the catchment area of Alexa, and its accuracy has been questioned in some quarters. Dig a little deep and you will discover that while the data on bounce rate is fairly accurate, the trends for bounce rate seem less accurate vis-a-vis the corresponding data in Analytics. Also, it seems to be skewed in favor of sites within the search engine marketing and online marketing space. SEO gurus say Alexa is best used to compare similar sites within an industry, and to distill insights for audience demographics, critical inputs for search engine optimization and search engine marketing.

ComScore offers a number of reports and insights on online marketing including internet marketing, and info on important keywords in an industry. However, not much can be said on its accuracy quotient.

Google's Ad Planner milks reliable data on sites also visited, and audience interest, but the catch is its lack of data for small sites. This could be a blow for SEO services related to the market at the bottom of the pyramid.

On the flip side, while the metrics reported on these two are pretty useful, the traffic data is not particularly meaningful. The best way to use Google's Ad Planner is to extract data on sites permitting Analytics to publish the data, a boon for SEO services providers. Like all Google products, Ad Planner comes free, has the tried and trusted brand name and scores high on accuracy as it can access more data than anyone else on the Internet.

Suppose you want to identify the difference between site A and B, and compare multiple sites, including regional info, Google Trends for Websites is another progeny from Grandpa Google. Google Trends paints a fair landscape to meet the needs of search engine optimization and the dynamics of internet marketing, though the reliability of the data seems to be more accurate when only trying to compare traffic from search.

When comparing websites with drastically different traffic numbers the rough visual estimation seems to correspond quite well with the observed analytics data.

If broad data gathering is your need, Google Trends is the right fit, and it is hard to find better comparative data elsewhere without direct access to your competitor's analytics account. The problem with Google Trends is that it does not give you hard numbers, and you have to settle for guess work informed and insightful though it is, of the numbers that your competitor is pulling in. The analysis gets murkier in a situation where two sites are similar in size: Google Trends cannot always be relied upon to pick the winner correctly in terms of say, monthly traffic.

Another SEO tool, Quantcas, offers uncluttered design and display of data, traffic numbers that are easy to comprehend, and also breaks down the data into demographics, but the major flaw is lack of reliability of data and lack of data on small-medium trafficked sites.

SEMrush provides data only for Google traffic, but covers sites of all sizes, but again accuracy is an issue. On the plus side, the tool's add-on options and ability to see the keyword lists and how the competitor ranks for these terms has special appeal for internet marketing.

Summing up, SEO services is pure play. Play by the rules of the game, but learn to find your own way. That's the simple, but open secret of all successful internet marketing strategies.
