University Job Fair Shows Demand for Engineering Graduates; Engineeringcrossing Finds 78,000 Jobs

Engineers with skills in cloud computing and mobile software applications are in high demand. Dice, a job board has seen tech job openings double in the last one year for the Detroit metro area.

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/07/2011 -- Kettering University's annual job fair has shown that engineering graduates are still in high demand.

The Flint, Michigan based college focuses only on engineering, science, and business majors. Over 100 employers showed up to its job fair, a big change from two years ago when engineering graduates had a hard time getting offers. The offers this time are not just for electrical and mechanical engineering graduates but also for computer science majors.

Ford and other auto industry firms are expanding its technical capabilities for which they need huge numbers of software and related tech experts. Local universities in and around Detroit are not producing enough of the graduates that these companies now need. Auto firms are interviewing promising students from far away schools such as Stanford.

Engineers with skills in cloud computing and mobile software applications are in high demand. Dice, a job board has seen tech job openings double in the last one year for the Detroit metro area. Other recruiting firms based in Michigan have also seen a big demand from automakers for employees with specialized skills.

CEO A. Harrison Barnes of EngineeringCrossing says that for engineers, especially computer science majors, Detroit could be a good move. "Detroit does have a lower cost of living compared to other metro areas and most firms today are trying to adopt the Silicon Valley tech work culture." Barnes' firm has been able to compile a list of over 78,000 engineering jobs nationwide this month and 3,000 engineering jobs in Detroit.

GM and Chrysler to Bring 2,000 Hi-Tech Jobs to Detroit,Engineeringcrossing Finds 72,000 Jobs in U.S.

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/02/2010 -- General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC will each be hiring around 1,000 engineers and technicians for their Detroit area factories.

GM plans to add around a 1,000 engineers and researchers who will be working on projects related to electric vehicles like its newly launched Chevrolet Volt. GM will start hiring immediately and the hiring will continue for the next two years. For GM, this is the first major hiring since it has emerged from bankruptcy that it filed in June 2009. GM today has around 209,000 employees worldwide.

Chrysler has stated that it is recruiting on 35 college campuses for around a 1,000 positions in its headquarters and technical center at Auburn Hills. Chrysler has plans to hire during the next four months in anticipation of its global growth and the expansion of its small and midsize models lineup. Chrysler has hired around 5,000 people since emerging from bankruptcy in June 2009 and has a total of 49,000 employees.

CEO A. Harrison Barnes of EngineeringCrossing sees this as an example of the upswing in engineering jobs. "GM and Chrysler hiring engineers is a sign of the auto industry coming around and starting to become a generator of high paying jobs once again. The auto parts industry is also going to hire more people if the carmakers keep ramping up production." Barnes' firm has been able to compile a list of over 72,000 engineering jobs available throughout the country this month.
