The home care market in Bulgaria remained relatively stable in 2010, despite continuing economic uncertainty. Volume sales remained stable, increasing by some 2% y-o-y, whilst value sales increased by 6%. Although several categories declined slightly, such as liquid detergents and other detergents, products such as polishes and fabric softeners managed to record impressive growth.<br />

Although many Bulgarians saw their disposable incomes decreasing because of the economic crisis and moved towards cheaper products, the popularity of eco-friendly products continued to increase in 2010. Consumers were permanently moving towards brands which are based on easily biodegradable ingredients, such as Frosch or Grune Line. This trend was especially strong in categories such as surface care and laundry care.<br />

Multinational companies continue to dominate the Bulgarian market<br />

Multinational players (global brand owners) such as Procter &amp; Gamble, Henkel, SC Johnson, Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser and Kigili Group accounted for more than half of total retail value sales in 2009. Of the seven leading companies, six were major global players. Modern retail formats increased rapidly in Bulgaria over the review period, and this continued in 2010, despite the overall decline of the retail market. Supermarket/hypermarket chains such as Carrefour and Kaufland continued their rapid expansion. At the same time, the globally-known discounter chain Lidl opened its first outlets in Bulgaria, and managed to expand very rapidly because of the low prices it offers. All these expansions were at the expense of the usually independent small grocers, which in many cases are too small to compete against the large chains for the attention of consumers.<br />

Although sales of home care products were negatively affected by the crisis in 2009, the market recovered in 2010, and is expected to continue to grow over the forecast five years. Despite unfavourable economic conditions, Venezuela&apos;s consumer electronics market showed strong growth in total volume and current value sales in 2010. This reflected the fact that Venezuelans like to keep up with technological trends and are often willing to pay a premium for more advanced gadgets, even when money is tight. This is particularly the case with mobile phones, which accounted for the largest share of total consumer electronics volume sales throughout the review period. Increasing urbanisation, the offering of attractive credit deals by retailers and the growing use of the internet (where Venezuelans can find cheaper deals and a wider assortment of products) also contributed to growth in total consumer electronics volume and current value sales in 2010.<br />

Exchange rate restrictions limit consumer choices and push prices upwards<br />

Throughout 2010, exchange rate restrictions made it increasingly difficult and costly to import certain types of goods into Venezuela, including consumer electronics. As a result, assortments of consumer electronics on offer in Venezuelan retail outlets were limited and weighted towards the most popular product types, while prices for many of the products that were available were very high. This drove many people to try and purchase consumer electronics from black market sources or via the internet.<br />

Mobile phone usage in Venezuela increased rapidly throughout the review period, partly due to the limited availability of landlines in remote regions and lower income neighbourhoods. While feature phones remained the most popular due to their lower cost, smartphones showed much faster growth in volume terms. Kimberly-Clark Southern Africa (Holdings) Pty Ltd launched a premium toilet paper processing plant worth more than R100 million at its Enstra mill in Springs. As a group, Kimberly-Clark accounts for a 24% value share of tissue and hygiene sales in South Africa and its volume share is predicted to increase in the toilet paper category. The company&apos;s strategy is to take advantage of the penetration opportunities presented by premium toilet paper, namely 2-ply and 3-ply products. Kimberly-Clark&apos;s statistics show that 74% of South Africans use toilet paper and out these only 40% of the high-income users use premium toilet paper.<br />

Supermarkets/hypermarkets channel dominates<br />
Supermarkets/hypermarkets continued to lead sales of tissue and hygiene products in 2010. These outlets benefit from offering consumers cheaper prices and price promotions and a wide range of private label products, all of which proved highly attractive during the economic downturn seen in 2010. The supermarkets/hypermarkets channel also possesses strong decision-making power, which in turn affects which products gain wide retail distribution and their level of success. The economic recession harshly hit local manufacturers of textile products and garments in Romania, as lohn agreements became less reliable, prompting many small operators to cease trading. Companies were forced to adapt to the new conditions and to create and develop private label products while significantly investing in training personnel. Labour migration and the high cost of labour prompted some companies to rely on Chinese workers while others invested in technological innovation in order to make production more efficient. In addition to administrative problems, local players have had to face unfair competition posed by large international apparel retailers, with little, if any, support from the authorities.<br />

Recession fails to damage local potential<br />
Despite an increase in the VAT rate in 2010, to 24%, major layoffs and cautious consumption among consumers, fashion enthusiasts had various reasons to rejoice in 2010, as various large international fashion retailers announced their intention to enter apparel in Romania. Based on the assumption of economic recovery in Romania, fashion retailers seek to buy or rent outlets in prime locations in order to take advantage of the favourable low prices. This has also been boosted by plans to create additional new shopping centres.<br />

Despite the negative effects of the economic downturn demand for luxury items in apparel in Romania managed to remain impervious, as these products are targeted at high-income consumers. Sales improve along with the economy<br />
Packaged food retail value growth is expected to show an improvement over 2009 and 2010 as the economic recovery that began in the latter half of 2010 has continued into 2011. Consumers are showing a willingness to spend more on food, demonstrating a growing preference for higher quality products, such as the functional and better-for-you options that many companies in the industry are developing. Whilst in 2009 and 2010, some companies cut back investment in new facilities and new product launches, 2011 is showing a contrast, with significant launches seen in many segments.<br />

Healthier products make inroads<br />
Whilst many Chileans do not eat healthy diets, concerns about obesity and other health problems like hypertension that are related to diet have increased in the country. Therefore, more consumers are looking for products that are healthier, and manufacturers have obliged by launching many new products that meet this demand. Lower sodium products are one area that is seeing development. New products with reduced sodium levels have been introduced in soups and also bakery. Another area that is seeing development is products enriched with fibre. Some new probiotic yoghurts also include added fibre and wholegrain products are becoming more prevalent in the bakery category.<br />

Dairy producers make advances<br />
In 2010, several companies that focused mainly on the dairy segment saw their shares increase, namely Soprole SA, Cooperativa Agricola y Lechera de La Union Ltda and Watt&apos;s SA. Dairy rebounded as the listeria scare that had affected the industry in 2008-2009 was no longer a problem. In addition, development and heavy promotion of new functional yoghurts, in particular probiotic and prebiotic yoghurts formulated to improve digestion, helped the companies to increase their participation.<br />

Supermarkets and hypermarkets increase their share of sales<br />
The supermarkets/hypermarkets channel saw its share of packaged food sales to increase to 50%. Investment in new outlets picked up along with the economy, giving consumers more access to this channel. When given the option for large shopping trips, consumers usually prefer a supermarket or hypermarket to an independent small grocer as the supermarkets and hypermarkets have a wider selection, have lower prices and offer other benefits like loyalty programs and store credit cards.<br />

Innovation to sustain growth going forward<br />
Packaged food is expected to see rather slow volume growth over the forecast period. Many categories like pasta, bakery and oils and fats are quite mature and it is difficult to encourage consumers to increase consumption significantly. Therefore, companies that wish to have success in the forecast period are going to need to innovate, producing functional and premium products that offer interesting features and a higher unit price than standard packaged foods.<br />

While it will be several years before the full impact of the NBN is felt, it will also take several years to change the industry around. Companies will have to reorganise themselves into new markets such as infrastructure and construction; middleware such as data centres, content hosting, cloud computing, OSS/BSS; and retail.<br />

This reorganisation and repositioning is already noticeable in current market activities, where the focus is moving from ARPU to market share. Prices in mobile and fixed broadband have dropped significantly during 2010 as operators try to win as many customers as possible.<br />

These customer bases are becoming very valuable and more companies will want to do business with their customers through digital services. <br />

The telcos and ISPS are positioning themselves as attractive partners for such developments.<br />

Declining traditional revenue<br />
The total telecoms service market is segmented according to major provider (Telstra, Optus VHA and other providers). Telstra still dominates the overall Australian telecom market, with more than 60% market share of overall revenues in 2009/10. However, Telstra&apos;s annual results for 2010 showed declining revenue in most segments, and this did not improve much in 2011.<br />

PSTN revenues (fixed-line voice and local access revenues), continue on a downward spiral for all the telcos, while the data market has now overtaken the mobile sector as the main driver of growth, driven by the retail broadband sector.<br />

Fixed-line voice is declining in the second-tier market at an even faster rate than in the first-tier market – by more than 11% in 2008/09 and more than 8% in 2009/10. Falling revenue reflects increased bundle value, as well as consumers moving away from fixed-line voice services. However it may also be a symptom of increased reliance on VoIP-based platforms (such as iiNet&apos;s successful BoB promotion) for voice service provision in the second-tier market. Revenues in second-tier mobile services and data services (including Internet access) continue to show satisfactory growth.<br />

NBN – full steam ahead into 2012<br />
With the legislation in place significant progress has been made during 2011 in preparation for the rollout of the NBN. The last major part of the complex puzzle was the arrangements with Telstra. Since the change in management in 2009, that company has embraced the NBN and embarked on its own business transformation process. Significant new steps have been taken, which are already positioning the company at the forefront of the new business opportunities that will arise once the NBN is in place. Separately, it has negotiated good deals with the government in relation to its infrastructure assets and the handover of customers from its old networks to the NBN.<br />

The mobile market in 2011<br />
In 2011 the mobile communications market in Australia, as in other developed economies, is seeing a further shift in emphasis from voice to data-orientated services, driven by more new handsets and applications. Penetration has outstripped the size of the market, which indicates that people are increasingly using multiple services and multiple devices.<br />

While voice is still the dominant mobile service in Australia, mobile data has steadily become more popular, spurred on by the advent of smartphones from vendors like Apple, HTC and RIM.
