Jeep Wrangler Wins 2021 Sales Battle Against Ford Bronco
Despite the hype for Ford's newcomer, it wasn't enough to earn the Wrangler's sales crown

The Ford Bronco may have been the hot new off-roader in 2021, but when it came down to the numbers, the Jeep Wrangler was still king. Wrangler sales outsold the full-size Bronco and Bronco Sport combined last year. However, the full-size Bronco had only been available since June.

U.S. sales numbers from Ford show that in the second half of the year, the company sold a tick over 35,000 Broncos. The company also sold about 108,000 Bronco Sports in all of 2021. Add those numbers together, and the two Broncos sold 143,192 units last year.

These numbers were absolutely blown out of the water by Jeep in the same time. Stellantis moved over 204,000 Wranglers last year. It was the off-roader's best year since 2018.

If you look at just Q3 and Q4 for Jeep – the same correlating time that Ford's full-size Bronco was on sale – the numbers aren't any better. Jeep sold just under 86,000 cars in the second half of the year. That more than doubles Ford's full size Bronco sales.

These strong sales numbers for the Wrangler are helped in no small part by two models: the 4xe and 392. The 4xe is especially doing its part to boost sales of Jeep's dedicated off-roader. It became the No. 1 best selling Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle in the country last year. The Wrangler 392 – with its monstrous V8 engine that the Bronco cannot match – also did a lot for reinvigorating interest in the model.

There were a lot of things, of course, working against Ford and its Bronco in 2021. A microchip shortage, pandemic-related supply chain issues as well as other delays and production issues may have kept many people out of the Bronco in 2021.

Half of eligible Stellantis vehicles rank among top three vehicles in their segments

Ram is the first truck-only brand to capture the top spot in the J.D. Power 2021 Initial Quality Study (IQS), culminating a meteoric rise in performance over the last two years.

The brand's first-place finish was fueled by positive feedback from owners of new 2500/3500 trucks – named top large heavy-duty pickup in this year's IQS – and owners of new Ram 1500 trucks, which ranked second among large light-duty pickups. Ram tied for third place in the 2020 IQS, and was 21st the prior year.

The groundbreaking result compliments Dodge brand's second-place finish. Dodge rewrote the record books last year by becoming the first domestic brand to claim top honors in IQS.

Against this backdrop, Jeep® jumped to a best-ever eighth place finish, three spots up from the prior year, putting a trio of Stellantis brands in the top quartile of this year's results.

"This is not a data point; this is a trend," said Mark Champine, Head of North America Customer Experience at Stellantis. "Anyone who knows the robustness of our product-improvement processes, as well as the engagement level of our workforce, is not surprised by these latest results."

Product design was a key contributor to this year's outcomes, Champine noted.

"If you start with strong design and follow that up with discipline on the plant floor, you get the kind of results we're seeing today," he said. "This feedback reflects our primary focus – to build vehicles our customers will be proud to recommend to friends and family."

J.D. Power surveyed new-vehicle buyers about their first three months of ownership and tracked problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) to measure the performance of 32 brands. Compared with 2020's results, Ram's industry-leading total improved by 13 PP100 to 128.

Dodge was next with 139, five PP100 fewer than its nearest competitors.

"We're proud to say it took another Stellantis brand to beat Dodge," Champine said.

Jeep brand's 149 total is 13 PP100 better than the industry average of 162. The intrepid brand's performance was led by the Jeep Gladiator, winner of the midsize pickup category, and the previous-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, which scored a podium finish in the midsize SUV category.

Both the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 reached the podium in the large car segment. Half of the 12 Stellantis vehicles eligible for prizes either won or were runners-up in their categories.

Fox Chase Joins With Gary Barbera's on the Boulevard to 'Help Kick Cancer to the Curb'

Gary Barbera's on the Boulevard, a family owned and operated Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram car dealership in Philadelphia, will donate $50 to Fox Chase Cancer Center for every car sold during October as part of their "Kick Cancer to the Curb" program. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"Advances in breast cancer treatment and prevention are not possible without funding to invest in innovative research and new technologies," said Richard I. Fisher, MD, president and CEO of Fox Chase Cancer Center. "We are grateful to Gary Barbera, his staff, and customers for their support of Fox Chase and the work we are doing to improve the lives of patients and families affected by breast cancer."

Each year, Breast Cancer Awareness Month brings attention to the impact of breast cancer on individuals across the United States. In 2021, an estimated 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in this country, along with 49,290 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer, according to breastcancer.org. It is the most common cancer in women, regardless of race or ethnicity. While the disease occurs predominantly in women, men can also develop breast cancer.

"4xe is the new 4x4" is both a terse Jeep marketing tagline and clever branding nobody else had claimed yet. It's also an effective way of showing how the off-road-focused brand sees its future—which, it's recently confirmed, could include several fully electric SUVs over the next few years.

Last week's product announcements at parent company Stellantis' EV Day focused on Jeep's success with the Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe plug-in hybrids in Europe and the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid in the U.S. and added the upcoming 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe to the lineup. And then CEO Christian Meunier announced—renewed by a press release Thursday—that it will have a fully electric vehicle in every SUV segment by 2025.

What does that mean? Jeep noted that the EVs will be in segments A, B, C, D, and E/F—suggesting that there might be as many as five new EVs on the way from the brand.

Jeep spokesperson Ariel Gavilan told that these statements are global in nature. So while Jeep might have a fully electric Renegade in Europe, to throw out a possibility, it might not necessarily have that in South America—or in the U.S.

That said, the EV Day presentation from parent company Stellantis last week was richer in detail for vehicles that appear intended for the U.S. market—including a future Dodge electric muscle car and an upcoming all-electric Ram 1500 in that presentation. As chief design officer Ralph Gilles pointed to last week, the potential of the so-called STLA Large dedicated EV platform will bring eight vehicles in the next three to five years, one of which is "a very capable Jeep off roading whitespace opportunity vehicle."

With the display of the Wrangler Magneto concept earlier in the year, Jeep said that there would be about a three-year timeline over which it planned to improve on the concept. So at that time it appeared that a fully electric Wrangler might not arrive until around 2024.

At that rate, there will be multiple fully electric Jeeps arriving in 2023 and 2024—something that will most definitely get that 4xe badge noticed.
