Restaurants Plan on Hiring Nearly 425,000 People During Summer, Hospitalitycrossing Finds 70,000 Jobs

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) --06/13/2011 -- The restaurant and bar industry is expected to add 425,000 jobs this summer season.

This is an increase of 4.6 percent compared to March for the industry. The restaurant industry is America's second largest private sector job creator, with almost 13 million employees. That is around 10 percent of the American workforce.

Most of the jobs created by the industry will be seasonal and are created during the months of June, July, and August. In summer 2010, the industry created around 401,000 jobs and in summer 2009 the figure was 391,000 jobs. The estimated figure of 425,000 jobs shows that the industry is recovering at a better pace than other sectors of the economy such as construction and manufacturing.

The typical summer restaurant job is a small family-owned restaurant with less than 50 employees. The main five states where most of these jobs are going to be created are:

• New York - 39,700

• California - 35,100

• Massachusetts - 27,100

• New Jersey - 23,200

Mcdonald's National Hiring Results in Long Lines, Hospitalitycrossing Finds 56,000 Jobs in Industry

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/02/2011 -- McDonald's highly published National Hiring Day was successful in attracting thousands of job seekers throughout the country.

The total number of applicants has not been released so far. But from most local media reports it is clear that the number of applicants exceeded the number of available positions. Most of the jobs are entry-level jobs often disparaged by economists and academics as being McJobs; meaning that they are dead-end and low-paying jobs.

But McDonald's is trying to change that image by putting up senior level executives who have been able to work their way to the top after they started at the bottom. Jan Fields, president of McDonald's USA and Jim Norberg both started in entry-level positions. McDonald's has said that around 75 percent of their restaurant managers and around 40 percent of their corporate employees started there as lower-level restaurant workers.

The 50,000 available jobs cover both part-time and full-time jobs and range from entry-level associates to managerial positions.

Local media reports from Utah, New York, and Atlanta all reported hundreds of applicants streaming into the local McDonald's to apply all day long.

CEO of HospitalityCrossing A. Harrison Barnes says that there are several fast food and restaurant jobs available across the country. "For people who are long-term unemployed and do not want a larger gap on their resume, a stint at such a job would be great." HospitalityCrossing, a job aggregator site has been tracking all the jobs in the food and leisure industry. The site has found 56,000 jobs in the sector.

Mcdonalds Plans to Hire 50,000 People Nationwide, Hospitalitycrossing Finds 56,000 Jobs in Industry

Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/13/2011 -- McDonald's is planning a huge one-day hiring spree, scheduled on April 19, to hire 50,000 new employees nationwide.

The positions offered include crew, both part-time and full-time, and managers. McDonald's currently has 14,000 restaurants and 650,000 employees. Jan Fields, president of McDonald's U.S.A. said that the average pay was going to be $8.30 an hour. Managers would be able to make $50,000 a year.

McDonald's is trying to improve the image of "McJob", a derogatory slang used for describing most jobs available at McDonald's. It is meant to imply that those jobs are low-paying, dead-end careers. But McDonald's has been highlighting for the past few years that several of its employees have risen through the ranks. Fields herself started out at an entry-level position in the company in 1978.

Jim Norberg who works as senior vice president in McDonald's restaurant support office began working at age 16 at McDonald's. His job involved making french fries.

Summer time usually results in more sales for the company and the company has been hiring a similar number for the past few years. But the one-day recruiting event is the first time for McDonald's and is meant to show what an important part the company plays in the economy.

CEO of HospitalityCrossing A. Harrison Barnes says that this is a great opportunity for unemployed people of all ages and skills level. "For people who are long-term unemployed and do not want a larger gap on their resume, a stint at such a job would be great."

HospitalityCrossing, a job aggregator site has been tracking all the jobs in the food and leisure industry. The site has found 56,000 jobs in the sector.
