The Vail Symposium Announces Its Winter 2012 Season

The Vail Symposium’s Winter 2012 season is underway with a lineup of 19 exciting, unique, and thought-provoking programs.

Vail, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/26/2011 -- "After a record-setting 40th anniversary, in which we saw a 51 percent growth in program attendance, we have set our sights on presenting an even more impactful program this winter," said Executive Director Liana Moore. "The season will kick off with a "Taste of Yale in Vail" that includes a presentation by Eric Paddock on the works of Robert Adams and a performance by the famed Whiffenpoofs on December 29 and will be followed by an additional eighteen captivating programs."

Created in 1971, the Vail Symposium was conceived by community leaders to be a forum for discussions to help create a vision for the community. The weekend-long think tank attracted not only the majority of townsfolk, but also policy shapers from across the state and nation. Throughout the years the Symposium has diversified and expanded its scope with a dedication to timely, thought-provoking programs that have relevance to the community and world. This season's lineup reflects our renewed efforts to elevate the quality and impact of our programs as we embark on the next 40 years.

Hot Topics
The Symposium's most recognizable series, Hot Topics, features experts who speak about issues relevant to our community and the world. This winter features three programs that deal with very timely and important topics, including a discussion about the condition of the United States Congress.

Born out of a new partnership with the Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver, on April 22 Senators Christopher Dodd and Hank Brown will participate in a senatorial dialogue on the future of the United States Congress. The Senators will discuss the present function and dysfunction of the U.S. Congress in a discussion moderated by Rohn Robbins.

"We are so fortunate to partner with the University of Denver Korbel School of International Studies to bring extraordinary programs to the Vail Valley," said Vail Symposium President and CEO Alby Segall. "The opportunity for the Vail Symposium to co-sponsor a few programs a year in Denver at the University expands our audience and helps build our reputation beyond Vail. Former Senators Dodd and Brown in Denver this spring are perfect for the launch of this partnership. The Senators understand the meaning of reaching across the aisle, a behavior that is hard to find in today's Congress."

On January 5 three wildlife and building authorities, Theodore P. Zoli, Nina-Marie Lister and Harvey Locke, will convene for a panel discussion on Wildways for Wildlife the first project of its kind that could happen right here in Eagle County. Finally, on March 15 Yvo de Boer, Special Global Advisor, KPMG Global Climate Change and Sustainability Services, and former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will speak on Climate Change.

"The program with Yvo de Boer on Climate Change is a prime example of the Vail Symposium thinking globally, but convening locally," said Vail Symposium Board Chairman Jim Ruh. "Mr. de Boer is one of the World's leading authorities on international efforts to address climate change. This is a program that no one should miss."

International Relations
We convene locally but think globally. This season three programs focus on issues relating to important current issues around the world. Jamie Metzl, Senior Fellow with the Asia Society will discuss the possibility and implications of a China-India conflict (March 4). Ambassador Christopher Hill will discuss the events of civil unrest, protest, and revolution in the Middle East and Africa, which have come to be known as the Arab Spring (April 5). And on February 9 Shaul Gabbay, Ph.D. will discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and deliver fascinating narratives of both sides, revealing different perspective about the simmering conflict in a region desperately needing peaceful resolution.

Art & Culture
Art shapes our creative and innovative nature and culture shapes inherited ideas into social action. Three programs this season offer a variety of opportunities to enjoy this category. First, on December 29, Yale returns to Vail for a performance by the unaccompanied voices of the famed Yale Whiffenpoofs and a presentation by Eric Paddock on the works of photographer Robert Adams.

On January 20 join journalist Karin Ronnow and photojournalist Ellen Jaskol for a presentation on their experiences traveling together and collecting stories and images of the Central Asia Institute's work in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan.

On March 24 international corporate and trial lawyer Michael Lacher and International Director of Restitution and Senior Vice President at Christie's Monica Dugot will discuss the origins, history, and authenticity of lost and stolen art, as well as several current cases on the restitution of stolen art and the challenges of enforcing recovery claims against foreign governments and institutions, including American museums.

Speaking Locally and Unlimited Adventure
It is part of the mission of the Vail Symposium to offer affordable programs to the community; one way that is accomplished is through the Speaking Locally and Unlimited Adventure series, both of which are free.

The Speaking Locally series gives local leaders, athletes, and other prominent authorities and community members a platform to share their ideas and passions with an audience. This season features three programs in this series. On January 31, following a screening of the movie "Doubt," Rabbi Debra Rappaport, Father Keith Brooks, and Dr. Joan Bornstein will participate in a panel discussion centered around the topics and themes presented in the film. On March 30 Daniel Joseph Watkins and Terry Minger will present on the life, art, and political activism of artist Thomas Benton. And on April 9 the President and CEO of the Colorado Bankers Association Don Childears and the Chairman and CEO of Centennial Bank Jim Basey will discuss how American banks can provide solutions to the current economic crisis.

One of the winter's most loved series, Unlimited Adventure, returns for five Thursday nights throughout the season with a lineup of programs that won't disappoint, starting January 12 with modern day explorer, expedition guide, and founder of the Save the Poles project Eric Larsen. Other adventurers in the lineup this season include two time stage winner of the Tour de France and Olympic medalist Davis Phinney and his wife Connie Carpenter, who has also won several World cycling medals, including an Oympic Gold (February 2) and adventure and wine journalist Stefani Jackenthal, who will speak on The Underbelly of Adventure Journalism (March 1). Solo around-the-world racing yachtsman, global investor and international speaker Neal Petersen (February 23) and climber and co-founder of Paradox Sports Timothy O'Neil (February 16) complete the lineup.

Fundraisers
Support the Symposium by attending—or participating in—two fundraisers this season that emphasize the fun more than most.

First, SPiN Galactic comes to Vail for two days this winter (January 26 and 27). SPiN is a galaxy of ping-pong social clubs created by owners Franck Raharinosy, Andrew Gordon, Jonathan Bricklin, and Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon. The two-day tournament will be comprised of four tiers, and all ages and abilities are invited to enter with cash prizes for each level.

On February 19 the Vail Symposium is teaming up with the Vail Valley Theater Company (VVTC) for an evening of performances that bring the stories of well-known local personalities and community leaders to life, including Beth and Rod Slifer, Dr. Jack Eck, Elaine Kelton, and Kelly Liken. Local actors from the VVTC will perform four original plays, all written by the VVTC, based on the contributions, experiences and achievements of each of these extraordinary individuals. Live and silent auctions after each performance will feature items relating to each of these characters.

Eating Recovery Center Wants You to Silence "Fat Talk" During Fat Talk Free Week

Eating disorders experts offer insight to increase awareness of the effect individuals’ words and behaviors have on child and teen body image

Denver, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/21/2011 -- Eating disorders are on the rise in children and one in 60 teens qualifies for an eating disorder diagnosis. During Fat Talk Free Week (October 16-22, 2011), Eating Recovery Center (http://www.EatingRecoveryCenter.com), an international center for eating disorders recovery, urges individuals to increase awareness of the body-conscious comments they make in front of others, especially children and teens. "Fat talk," whether directed at oneself or others, can damage children's body image, and in serious cases, may trigger disordered eating behaviors.

"When we engage in 'fat talk' and critique our own bodies or the bodies of others, we teach children to value thinness above all else," explains Ovidio Bermudez, MD, FAAP, FSAHM, FAED, CEDS, medical director of child and adolescent services at Eating Recovery Center. "This excessive focus on body shape and size creates an unrealistic ideal in the minds of children upon which body image issues and eating disorders can develop."

Eating Recovery Center offers these four recommendations to help adults banish detrimental "fat talk," model healthy behaviors and promote positive body image in children and teens.

1. Be aware of comments you make about your own body. Children and teenagers are far more astute than adults may give them credit for and they will often mirror observed behaviors. Offhand comments about having a "fat day" or feeling too snug in an old pair of jeans can have a bigger effect on a developing child or teen body image than many may think.

2. If you are a parent, talk to your children about images in the media. Children and teenagers are bombarded on a daily basis with celebrity gossip, weight loss advertisements and airbrushed photography. Discuss with your children how these images make them feel and explain why they are often unrealistic. Opening the lines of communication about body image can help children develop stronger self-esteem and healthier attitudes about their own bodies.

3. Encourage non-biased conversations about food and exercise. For many, "fat talk" can run rampant related to food and exercise. This negative self-talk can be as simple as expressing shame over eating a brownie or emphasizing the need to go to the gym to work off excess weight. To help children develop healthy attitudes toward food and exercise, focus on modeling behaviors that are "fat talk" free. Do not label foods as "good" or "bad;" instead, promote moderation and balance. Elevate exercise as a fun activity that gives you energy and makes you feel good.

4. Focus on who people are, not what they look like. Rather than focusing on body shape and size, compliment people for personality traits and focus on good deeds they have done. Teach children to do the same.

"Many adults may not realize that what they say can have a significant impact on children and teens," explains Dr. Bermudez. "Fat Talk Free Week is an opportunity to encourage people to be more conscientious of their comments and promote a healthy, positive body image."

Bryant & Stratton College Online Honored As a 2012 Military Friendly School for Its Support of Active-Duty Service Members, Military Veterans and Their Families

Only 20 Percent of Colleges, Universities and Trade Schools Awarded This Distinction from G.I. Jobs Magazine

Buffalo, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/10/2011 -- Bryant & Stratton College Online announced today that it has again been named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs Magazine. Only 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools are awarded this distinction. The list was created so that service members and military veterans can easily find schools that offer the best education, value and welcome.

The G.I. Jobs list includes state universities, private colleges, community colleges and trade schools. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board consisting of educators from schools across the country.

"We are humbled to be again named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs Magazine, especially since this year's list considered veteran feedback," said Scott Traylor, Associate Campus Director for Online Education at Bryant & Stratton College. "We feel that it is our duty to do what we can to help service members, military veterans and their families receive the education they need to succeed, in an environment that understands their unique circumstances."

G.I. Jobs Magazine selected schools following extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide. Bryant & Stratton College Online was selected because it offers scholarships and discounts, has a veteran's club and a full-time staff member dedicated to helping students with military experience. Examples of ways Bryant & Stratton College Online supports its military students and their families are below:
Bryant & Stratton College Online originally created the Salute to Spouses program to help fill the void left by the suspension of the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) program. It has since expanded Salute to Spouses, launching a career and education resource website for military spouses, written and edited by military spouses.

For military spouses pursuing an associate's degree, the scholarship can be combined with MyCAA benefits, or the scholarship can be applied toward an online bachelor's degree program at Bryant & Stratton College.
VisitMobile Launches Mobile Concierge

A trusted advisor for in-market visitors; the Mobile Concierge smartphone app puts local content control back in the hands of the destination marketing organization

Boulder, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/23/2011 -- Colorado-based VisitMobile, Inc. is bringing the world of destination travel smartphone apps to a whole new level with the introduction of their Mobile Concierge solution. Mimicking a real destination concierge, Mobile Concierge provides convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs), destination marketing organizations (DMOs) and business improvement districts (BIDs) with a customized smartphone app that delivers real-time trusted advice and insider knowledge at the in-destination visitor's point of need.

"Mobile Concierge is fundamentally different than simply creating a destination guide app or a mobile optimized version of a destination's existing website" said VisitMobile CEO Jeff Kohn. "Visitors who are already in the destination, need information in a completely different format than those who are planning a future trip. Mobile Concierge uses a powerful GPS Relevancy Engine loaded with expert local content and multimedia to help the in-market visitor decide 'what to do next,' make instant reservations or ticket purchases, and access insider deals."

In addition to enhancing the visitor's experience, the Mobile Concierge solution provides an ongoing revenue stream for the DMO and proves delivered value to merchant stakeholders with detailed usage analytics. VisitMobile's innovative approach to destination mobile marketing is so revolutionary, it garnered the prestigious Platinum Adrian Award from the HSMAI (Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International) in January 2011 for Napa Valley's Mobile Concierge.

VisitMobile is a dream solution for DMOs, resorts and even college campuses looking to take back control of the conversation with the in-destination visitor. With the popularity of unofficial destination apps and mobile search engines, research shows that less than 20 percent of visitors return to the destination's website for local information after they arrive into a destination.

Continues Kohn, "CVBs and DMOs spend tens of thousands of dollars on mass media and websites to attract guests to their destination, but they lose control of the guest's experience once they arrive. VisitMobile's Mobile Concierge allows local authorities to continue interacting with visitors in a way that benefits the guest and maximizes revenue for a destination's merchant partners."

Even better than a stationary hotel concierge desk, the trusted Mobile Concierge is always on hand as the guest explores the destination, and is ready to answer their question, "I'm right here, now what should I do?" Mobile Concierge bridges GPS map-based navigation and time-based, hyper-local content to help both leisure and business travelers to discover nearby and timely events, attractions, dining, shopping, special offers and more. The complimentary full-day conference focused on professional development for health educators. Conference sessions included frank discussions on health education, record keeping, new state regulations, and job-seeking tips.

Denver campus to award diplomas at Paramount Theatre on Saturday, June 18

Denver, CO -- (SBWIRE) --06/16/2011 -- Graduates from CollegeAmerica will don caps and gowns Saturday, June 18, to receive their college diplomas. The graduates join the thousands of alumni who have received career training from CollegeAmerica through degree programs in business, graphic arts, healthcare, and information technology.

Among the outstanding graduates is Jeanean West. Jeanean is the first person in her family to attend college. While earning her degree, Jeanean had to overcome personal obstacles after losing her job and struggling to make ends meet. She persevered, and considers school one of the best choices she has made in her life so far. Jeanean earned an occupational associate's degree in medical specialties and was hired at a local medical office after completing her externship there. Her advice to other students is to keep believing in yourself no matter what life throws at you, and you will accomplish your goals.

"These graduates have worked hard to earn their degrees and now they are ready to take the next step toward success in the workplace and in life. Earning a college degree takes dedication and a personal investment; these students made the commitment on top of working full-time jobs, raising families, or dealing with personal obstacles, and they should be really proud of their accomplishments," said Nathan Larson, executive director of CollegeAmerica, Denver.
