Pacific Media Reports Distributors' HDTV Inventories Piled Up in January

Holiday sales failed to reach expectations, especially for smaller sizes

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/26/2008 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that inventories of consumer flat panel televisions at North American distributors rose 68% in January over December's levels. Their Flat Panel Display Distributor Tracking Service report for January 2008 also shows that distributor sales of HDTVs fell 37%.

"These results are in sharp contrast with the January 2007 results," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media. "Last January saw a 18% increase in unit sales over December 2006, and inventories declined 7% over that period. This year's results run in the opposite direction."

The inventory logjam was most pronounced in the 30" to 34" range, which represents the majority of the most affordable HDTV models. Inventory levels more than tripled in January, in spite of a 55% increase in sales. Abowd points out "Distributors were able to move considerably more of these products in January than in December, but far more units had been ordered than could be sold. It appears that many of the consumers who were the targets for these products kept their money in their pockets. Higher food and energy prices, tighter credit, and uncertainty about jobs and the economy were likely the main factors."

Abowd continues, "We also see some evidence that January distributor inventory levels were boosted by manufacturers handing off stocks that they had failed to sell directly to major retailers during the holiday buying season. These remaindered units will likely push the average street price down for this segment in the coming months."

Based on the unit sales of consumer HDTVs by distributors in January, Sony earned a first place position with 35% unit market share. Viewsonic was second with a 21% unit market share.

Pacific Media Reports December HDTV Sales Jumped 27%

Plasma lost more ground; LCD now has half the share of 50”-54” segment

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/18/2008 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel HDTV televisions in North America grew by 27% in December over November's sales, marking a seasonal sales surge for the end of the year. Their Consumer Flat Panel Display Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows that consumers moved toward buying larger size models.

"One important development in December was that plasma models continued to lose ground to LCD," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media. "LCD already dominates the market below 45", but in December, LCD took 50% of the larger 50" to 54" size segment. Plasma's unit share dropped to 17% in December, which is its lowest point in the history of our sample. We have not seen the impact of the new, larger capacity LCD plants that will start to come online later in 2008, which should only increase LCD's competitive position in the larger sizes."

The average street price for all units sold in December in the report sample declined by just 1% over the average for November. This result might appear to be in conflict with the result that 17 of the top 20 best-selling units fell by as much as 10% or more from November's pricing. The 1080p 45"-49" LCD segment average price fell by 10%, and was second behind 1080p 40"-44" LCD as the most popular segment on a unit basis. The conclusion from this is that consumers took advantage of lower prices to step up to larger sizes than they bought in November.

December ended with greatly reduced inventories compared with November, falling below the October 2007 levels. This is still a sizeable inventory, as retailers were already building up for holiday sales in October. As a result, it remains to be seen whether January's Super Bowl sales were sufficient to bring inventories down to a manageable level for the spring when seasonal expectations predict slower sales.

Samsung had seven of the top ten best-selling models in December, including the top selling LNT4661F 1080p 46" LCD HDTV with an average street price of $1,531, down 15% from its November price. This helped drive Samsung to the top spot in both unit share with 29.6%, and revenue share with 32.2%.

Pacific Media Reports Professional Flat Panels Sales Up Just 4% in December

Plasma continues to sell well in the professional market

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/16/2008 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for professional flat panel televisions and business displays in North America were up by 4% in December over November's level. Their Professional Flat Panel Display Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows that increasing average street prices rose 1%, resulting in a 5% increase in revenues.

"Plasma continues to dominate in the professional market," according toRosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media. "The top selling segment in December was the 40" to 44" XGA plasma, which accounted for 24% of unit sales in spite of a 6% increase in the average street price. The 50" to 55" WXGA plasma segment was in second place with 20% unit market share, with a 4% increase in average street prices."

Panasonic was first in unit and revenue market shares for December. The company had 50% of the unit sales, and 40% of the revenues. The Panasonic TH-42PH10UK repeated as the best-selling model for the month with an average street price of $987, down 6.5% from its November price.

Pacific Media Survey Quantifies Why LCD Is Dominating Plasma in Flat Panel TVs

Sony dominates mindshare but shoppers opt for lower-priced brands

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/07/2008 -- Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has just completed their End User Survey, which provides quantitative evidence of some notable and sometimes surprising consumer behavior. One key result is a measure of the reasons that consumers increasingly choose LCD over plasma for flat panel HDTVs.

"All else being equal, consumers shopping for a new flat panel TV are willing to pay $162 more for an LCD than a plasma," according to Rosemary Abowd, PMA's Vice President of flat panel and rear projection TV research. "Shoppers rated LCD HDTVs ahead of plasma models on all major decision criteria except Sex Appeal and Picture Quality. Unfortunately for makers of plasma sets, new shoppers are considering price increasingly important relative to picture quality."

Price is important, but size is even more important, according to the 500+ consumers who provided data regarding their current usage and future plans. While the most popular size range for future purchases is 40 to 42 inches, a total of 40% of shoppers want to buy a set that is larger than 42 inches. And they are willing to pay an average of $187 more for it.

Sony enjoys the largest share of the TVs currently in use in U.S. households, whether measured for all technologies combined or flat panel TVs only. "For years, Sony has demonstrated the highest mindshare of any brand, and this year they accounted for a full one-third of votes on both 'best' brand and intention to buy," according to Abowd. "But even more interesting was the surprising finding that lower-tier brands like Vizio and Westinghouse did not score in the top ten on 'best' but did score there on intention to buy."

Pacific Media's End User Survey Suggests Big Opportunity for Tiny Projectors

Larger picture is key to watching more or longer, or showing to others

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/07/2008 -- Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has just completed their End User Survey, and the results indicate that the behavior of heavy users of cell phones, audio/video players, and digital cameras carries a strong potential demand for tiny projectors that can dock onto these gadgets, or actually be embedded into them.

"Anecdotal examples abound of cell phone users' interest in taking still or video pictures, and of showing them to friends on their display screens, but now in a survey of 500+ end users, PMA has quantified just how widespread these behaviors are," says Dr. William Coggshall, founder and president of PMA. "Our survey showed that about two-thirds of all cell phone users shoot still or moving pictures, and about one-third consider it vital to show them (and other visual material) to friends on their cell phone's screen."

Screen size clearly matters. Users with cell phone screens three inches (diagonal) or larger watch considerably more live TV, downloaded videos, and other sources than those with smaller screens. And more than twice as many of those with the larger screens will watch a TV show or video 30 minutes or greater in length, as compared to those with the smaller screens.

But the recent introduction of cell phones like Apple's iPhone, with their larger screens, is a threat to the opportunity for tiny projectors. "Projector manufacturers will need to start offering attractive products soon if they want to capitalize on the opportunity," says Coggshall. "And they will need to convince the cell phone makers to either embed the projector into the phone itself, or to include a video-out plug so it can be attached to a stand-along projector. Currently only about one in eight users owns a cell phone with such a video-out capability."

Pacific Media Predicts 15.6% Price Drop for Flat Panel HDTVs in 2008

Worldwide market to grow 41% in 2008

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/07/2008 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel televisions and business displays worldwide are expected to reach 113 million units in 2007. Their quarterly Worldwide Flat Panel Display Forecast predicts this 41% increase over the estimated 80 million units for 2007.

"At this time last year, manufacturers were hoping that 2007 would bring some stability to flat panel HDTV pricing," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media Associates. "We estimate that the overall average street price declined 14.7% in 2007. The overall drop is smaller than for some individual market segments, however, as consumers have moved to larger screen sizes and 1080p resolution sets. These have higher price tags than the models favored in 2006, which has helped keep the average street price higher."

"The growth in the flat panel display market is beginning to slow down, "according to Abowd. "We estimate that 2007 unit sales grew 86% over the 2006 numbers, and 2006 was 89% higher than 2005. The projected 41% unit growth for 2008 is still a healthy increase, but significantly less than the growth we saw in 2006 and 2007."

The overall street price is predicted to drop another 15.6% in 2008. Coupled with the slower growth in sales, manufacturers will be competing for their share of less than a 19% increase in total revenues worldwide.

Pacific Media Marks 6th Year of Tracking Professional Flat Panel Display Sell-Through

Transaction-based data from AV and IT channels delivers in-depth views of trends

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/28/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has earned the reputation as the leader in front projector sell-through data, with more than 10 years' experience tracking the Pro AV channel. The company also tracks large flat panel products, for both the consumer and professional markets. The professional products include those intended for lodging and digital signage installations, as well as other business-to-business applications.

"Our transaction-based sell-through data reaches back to January 2002, giving us an unmatched perspective on the historical trends," according to Rosemary Abowd, PMA's Vice President of flat panel and rear projection TV research. "Our sample covers a broad range of channel participants, large and small, so we get a wide view of the marketplace. We have found that channel participants and manufacturers alike value our monthly delivery of both the data and the analysis."

The transaction-based sell-through data helps spot trends early. For example, the new 58" Wide XGA plasma professional model segment showed promising growth in the October data as unit sales grew six-fold and average street prices rose 12% compared with September 2007, for a 600% revenue increase. As a result, this one model segment was responsible for 6% of the October professional product revenue in the sample data. According to Abowd, "We observed more than a year ago that the Pro A/V channel was selling a significant amount of 58" WXGA consumer models, creating an opportunity for professional models in this segment."

"Combining PMA's comprehensive coverage of sales through the PC/IT and Pro AV distribution channels with our detailed sell-in census data from the manufacturers provides particularly strong insight into the FPD marketplace," continued Abowd. "All this data is entered into a single SQL Server database that allows us to triangulate the overall market using all three streams of data."

For example, professional flat panel shipments rose sharply in the 2007Q3, gaining 51% over 2007Q2 on a unit basis. "Lodging (in-room viewing) was the big winner," according to Abowd. "Shipments represented 54% of the total professional unit market share in the third quarter."

Another interesting aspect of the professional segment is that much of the product that passes through the PC/IT distributors and Pro AV resellers are actually consumer models. "More than twice as much consumer grade product is stocked and distributed by them than the professional grade models, "Abowd remarked. "Professional product manufacturers are not just competing against other professional products, but also against the combined features and lower prices of the consumer products."

Pacific Media Reports 1080p LCD HDTV Outsold Lower Priced Plasma Models

Consumer Flat Panel HDTV Sales Jumped 25% in October

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/17/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that in the hotly contested 50" to 54" HDTV market segment, 1080p LCD models outsold 1080p plasma models nearly three to one, even though the LCD models had average street prices 19% higher than the plasma models. LCDs continue to take market share away from plasma. As reported in their October Consumer 2007 Flat Panel Display Tracking Service, LCDs accounted for 80% of the total units sold in the flat panel TV market (models 26" or larger).

"1080p continues to gain importance in the flat panel market," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media. "Unit sales of 1080p LCD models grew 25% in October, and accounted for half of the total revenues for the month."

Consumer preference for HDTV sizes also shifted in October. "The 30" to 34" models gained 5 unit market share points for a total of 28%, making it slightly more popular than the 40" to 44" segment with its 26% unit market share," according to Abowd. "Surprisingly, the lower priced 26" to 29" segment lost 3.5 share points in October."

Compared with October 2006, the average street price was down 30%, and unit sales were slightly more than double.

Samsung was the unit market share leader with 19.6%, edging out second place Sony's 17.5%. In revenue market share, however, Sony was first with 24.3% over Samsung's 22.0% share. The 32" Toshiba 32HL67 took top honors among the crowded field of best sellers with 2.8% unit market share.

Pacific Media Shows Rear Projection HDTV Sales Up in October

1080p and DLP continue to dominate

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/17/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for rear projection HDTVs in North America increased 27% in October over September's figures. Their October 2007 RPTV Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows that this is the highest unit sales since May 2007, but still represents less than half the sales in January 2007.

"90% of unit market share and 95% of the revenues were for 1080p models in October," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media. "Texas Instruments continued to dominate as well; four out of five rear projection models sold in October had DLP imaging chips."

The 60" to 69" segment had the largest share of unit sales with 37%. "In spite of a significant price advantage, the 50" to 59" segment has been losing ground steadily to LCD and plasma flat panel models," according to Abowd. "The average street price for the rear projection models are about $1,500, which is $1,000 less than the 50" to 55" flat panel average street price, yet the flat panels outsell rear projection nearly three to one."

Mitsubishi led the pack in October gaining 9 unit share points for a total of 38%, and sales of larger models earned the company a 46% revenue share. The best selling model for October was the Samsung HLT6187S, with a 10% unit market share at an average street price of $1,960.

Pacific Media Launches Comprehensive Large-Screen Displays End User Survey

Will measure key trends and intentions of both consumers and organizations

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/13/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, announces their 2007 U.S. Large-Screen Displays End User Survey, to be conducted via the Web.

The latest in a series of biennial surveys, PMA has conducted similar surveys in the odd years starting in 2001, but this one is the most ambitious project yet, because it includes both consumer and organizational ("professional") users and intenders, and all three main product categories of front projectors (both Classic and New Era), rear projection, and flat panel TVs/monitors (as well as some questions on accessories, attachments, or other categories that relate closely to large-screen displays).

Survey topics include both tried-and-true basic questions about recent past and near future buying behavior and new ones focused on potentially important emerging trends. Some examples are:
•	Market share and mind share of brands
•	Consumers' habits regarding use of cell phones, music/video players, digital cameras, and video games, and implications for large displays connected to them
•	Hours of usage of home TVs, business front projectors
•	Applications for which flat panel displays are used in organizations
•	Numbers of meeting rooms in organizations and penetration by large-screen displays

PMA is the only source of such comprehensive end user data—and insights gleaned from it by the PMA team of experts—on large-screen displays. "We learn things from these surveys that simply can't be found by other means," says PMA president William Coggshall. "For example, we have been surprised to find out how low the penetration rate of front projectors is in meeting rooms, and how much longer large corporations are keeping their projectors than their replacement policy would indicate." Naturally, PMA's research team will use this data to strengthen their understanding of the market and to guide their forecasts. Subscribers to PMA's Flat Panel Displays Industry Service, Front Projector Industry Service, or Rear Projection Television Industry Service will receive a complete copy of these survey results.

Pacific Media Raises New Era Projector Forecasts

Revised forecasts predict nearly 8 million units in 2011

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/08/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has revised its worldwide forecasts for New Era front projector products. Unit shipments are expected to total less than 50,000 units this year, but that will grow rapidly to nearly 8 million units by 2011, with revenues topping $1.5 billion.

"New Era" front projector products include inexpensive projectors with less than 500 lumen light output, which is significantly less than the portable and fixed installation projectors that make up the traditional front projector market. Pacific Media divides these new projectors into two large groups. Gaming and Personal projectors are compact models that are used with gaming consoles and devices other than personal computers. Mini-Projectors include miniature projectors that can either be in a docking module or embedded in a portable device such as a cell phone.

"This portion of the projector industry is going to go from zero to 60 in record time," according to William Coggshall, President of Pacific Media Associates. "However, the potentially high return in the New Era categories is accompanied by a high risk of both technology evolution and market acceptance, and the current leaders in the "Classic" (500+ lumens) portion are currently sitting on the sidelines, while a bunch of upstarts are being drawn to these opportunities, bringing innovative technologies and designs to their products. These new, tiny projectors are generating a lot of excitement both inside and out of the industry."

New Era projector products are poised to appear in the market. Several companies are readying stand-alone or docking mini-projector models for mobile phones, while others are focused on embedding their entries in mobile or larger host devices. Among the most pointed developments foreseen by the PMA analysis are:

• The choice of imager chips looks to broaden from the oligopoly of 3LCD and DLP to include LCOS and single-pixel MOEMS scanning chips;
• Lasers and LEDs will duke it out for illumination; and
• Holographic approaches, claiming speckle reduction and other advantages, are taking on more conventional designs.

Pacific Media Names Buckaroo HDTV Awards for Best of Show at CEDIA 2007

New award series recognizes trailblazing technology

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/21/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has announced the Buckaroo winners for best-of-show products exhibited at CEDIA 2007. The Buckaroo award is named for the pioneering cowboys of the Great Basin country of the American West, which includes portions of California, Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon. These cowboys were known for fancy gear that displayed lots of silver ornamentation.

The Buckaroo Awards recognize those products in the display industry that lead the herd in terms of technology and presentation. The inaugural winners are two products in each of four larger categories: flat panel displays, front projectors, rear projection displays, and display mounts.

Flat Panel HDTVs
Toshiba wins a Buckaroo for their new REGZA line of LCD HDTVs that have bezels less than one-inch wide. This allows a 40" model to fit in the same physical space as a typical 37" LCD or plasma set.

Sharp gets a Buckaroo for demonstrating 52" next-generation LCD HDTV prototypes that are less than 1" thick and weigh about 55 pounds. Not only are the physical dimensions smaller than traditional designs, but the sets are expected to use about one-half the power of a typical LCD of the same size, and one-quarter the power of a plasma set.

Front Projector
The Action! M80 from projectiondesign is a high-end three-chip DLP with gorgeous 1080p native resolution. Rated at up to 8,000 lumens, this light canon is available with a choice of five optional lenses. This is a Robb Report-worthy product — not to mention Buckaroo-worthy — from one of the best projector design teams in the business.

Runco earns a Buckaroo for their new Reflection line of projectors, including the RS-440. This 720p model is a new platform that offers optional CineWide 2.35:1 support. It also breaks new ground in terms of lower pricing for Runco products; the projector is slated to ship in December with an MSRP of $4,995.

Rear Projection HDTVs
Mitsubishi showed the new 833 Diamond Series of 1080p DLP projection HDTVs which deserve a Buckaroo. In addition to x.v.Color support and thinner cabinets, these models are also 3D ready. This means that they have built-in support for three-dimensional graphics to create an immersive experience, whether your watching a 3D-enabled movie, sporting event, or video game.

The new Olevia 665H rear projection HDTV from Syntax-Brillian combines the Brillian 1080p LCoS imaging technology with Olevia's video processing, to create an affordable 65" display that will list for $1,999 when it ships in the fourth quarter of 2007. The combination of quality and value earn a Buckaroo.

Mounts
OmniMount worked with Samsung to create the Motion52 cantilever mount, with motorized tilt, pan, and swivel control. The mount will list for $799.95 when it ships in October, and wins a Buckaroo right now.

The next generation of In-Wall Swing Arm Mounts from Chief Manufacturing can handle flat panel HDTVs from 26" to 63". Designed to be installed within a wall rather than on its surface, the mounts are less than 8" wide and no studs have to be cut to install them. It gets a Buckaroo for convenience and performance.

Congratulations to the winners of the first Buckaroo awards.

In-room Viewing and Digital Signage Were Top Applications, per Detailed Surveys

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/10/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has released their latest quarterly manufacturer census and survey results, showing that 30"+ flat panel displays (monitors and TVs) designated for professional (B2B) use grew 58% over their second quarter 2006 levels. PMA's findings show higher than expected growth of LCD technology products and an actual year-over-year decline in plasma technology models.
"But the breakdowns by vertical markets and applications are even more interesting", says Rosemary Abowd, PMA's Vice President of FPD and RPTV Research. "Thanks to PMA's unique combination of quarterly manufacturer-provided breakdowns, annual dealer surveys of current and expected trends, and monthly data from PMA's one-of-a-kind professional reseller sample, PMA is able to home in accurately on all the key combinations of these two breakdowns. With the intense competition in the professional market, this is compelling data for manufacturers to gauge their past performance and choose strategies and tactics for the future."

During the second quarter of 2007, the top two applications were in-room viewing and digital signage. In-room viewing accounted for 44% of the total professional 30"+ market, with the large majority of units being sub-40" LCD models. Digital signage accounted for 21% of the total, with a slightly stronger showing by plasma technology and larger sizes but with LCD technology closing in quickly.

The vertical markets covered by PMA include:
• Lodging
• Corporate
• Government
• Education
• Entertainment
• Medical

The applications covered by PMA include:
• In-room viewing
• Digital signage
• Presentation and training
• Classroom instruction
• Technical systems (e.g., video conferencing, command & control, scientific monitors, and precision medical systems displays)

PMA has been publishing separate census and forecast reports for lodging and non-lodging for the last three quarters, and will be offering a special, extra-cost optional supplement to their quarterly census reports starting with the third quarter of 2007.

Pacific Media: New Era Projector Market Will Hit 6.5 Million Units in 2011

Includes tiny laser- and LED-based models and low-cost retro-tech models

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/10/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has just released their forecasts for a new breed of front projectors. Although these models will offer only 500 lumens of brightness or less, Pacific Media estimates that they will experience explosive growth from only 18 thousand units in 2006 to more than 6.5 million in 2011.

Pacific Media's New Era market includes the following types:

• Stand-alone mini-projectors (also known as pocket projectors)
• Snap-on or embedded mini-projector modules for mobile host devices
• Embedded mini-projector modules for "big" host devices
• Lower-end "toy" mini-projectors
• Higher-end gaming mini-projectors
• Personal mini-projectors

The three mini-projector categories together will account for 4.4 million of the 2011 total. According to Pacific Media president, William Coggshall, "Because the success of these products depends on both the continued evolution of technologies to produce designs that achieve goals of smallness, brightness, low power, and low cost and the readiness of consumers to embrace this potentially 'cool' product concept, our forecast is highly speculative. But we could also be off by an order of magnitude or two on the low side, as witness the number of mobile phones with embedded cameras. And something is definitely going on, as witness the number of components companies and new projector designs making the rounds."

"To create these new mini-projector forecasts, we had to add a bunch of new possibilities to our lists of technology and features, including MOEMS (micro-optical-electro-mechanical-systems) imagers, and further refine our range of sizes to include 'Femtoportable', by which we have dubbed models weighing less than 0.2 kg (0.44 lb.)," adds Coggshall.

[Graph image file available on request]

At the other end of the spectrum are three categories of products that are purposely recycling older technologies to achieve bill-of-material costs lower than current models, aiming the products at groups of potential buyers—including children—who have never before owned or used projectors. Lower-resolution imager chips and older/dimmer lamp technologies top the list of the changes in these categories. "Here, we just had to revive some dormant combinations of technology and features," says Coggshall.

Pacific Media Shows Rear Projection HDTV Sales Slip Further in May

Large sizes dominate as three out of four units sold were 55” or larger

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/31/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for rear projection televisions in North America fell again in May, with unit sales down 12% against April sales. Their May 2007 RPTV Sell-Through Tracking Service report also shows unit sales are up 6% compared with May 2006, but revenues are down 21% between the two periods.

"As expected, the bulk of the sales were for the larger sizes," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media. "On a unit basis, 75% of the models sold were 55" or larger. Consumers continue to prefer flat panel HDTVs, and falling prices for LCD and plasma models have erased rear projection's price advantage in the smaller sizes."

The most popular segment in terms of unit market share was the 60" to 69" DLP 1080p group of products, accounting for one in five units sold in May. Aggressive pricing on close-out models from Toshiba helped increase sales.

Sony took top honors for the month, with a unit market share approaching 30%, and a 34% revenue market share. Strong sales of the XBR2 and A2020 Series SXRD models helped them gain the top spot. Samsung was second and Mitsubishi third, in both unit and revenue shares. The best-selling model was the Toshiba 65HM167, which had an average street price of $1,624.

Pacific Media Reports Flat Sales for Consumer Flat Panel HDTVs in May

Overall revenues grew on the strength of shift to 1080p LCD models

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/20/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for consumer flat panel televisions in North America increased just 1% over April 2007 sales. Their Consumer Flat Panel Display Sell-Through Tracking Service report also shows that revenues were up nearly 4%, even though prices for individual models were generally down for the month.

"Revenues increased for the month because there was a distinct shift in what consumers bought in May," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President of Pacific Media Associates. "The price of 45" to 49" 1080p LCD models fell 5% in May, which helped boost the segment to third place behind the 30" to 34" WXGA LCD and 50" to 54" WXGA plasma segments. Across all sizes, one out of every three flat panel televisions sold in May was a 1080p model. Since these models cost more than lower resolution models, revenues grew faster than unit sales in May."

Sony reaped the benefits of the demand for 1080p LCD HDTVs, capturing 22% of the unit market share and 28.1% of the revenue market share, claiming first place in both categories. Samsung was second in unit market share with 16.7% Pioneer took second place in revenue market share with 23.1%, largely on the continued strength of their Elite PRO-1140HD which was the top-selling model again in May. The average street price for this model fell 7% in May, reaching $2,800 which is 40% lower than it was two months ago.

Pacific Media Awards Top Six Projector Companies

Winners earned top ranks from dealers in annual survey

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/19/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has given awards to the top six front projection companies, based on the 11th Annual Dealer Survey. This is the authoritative source of independent, unbiased ratings of large-screen displays manufacturers by dealers throughout North America.

The six award recipients were:
Gold Award:	Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America Inc.
Silver Award:	Epson America, Inc.
Bronze Award:	Optoma
Honorable Mention:	Hitachi America, Ltd. / NEC Display Solutions / Eiki International, Inc.

Dealers were asked to provide ratings based on a broad range of factors covering products, marketing support, and after-sale support. Individual items included the quality of Web-based marketing support, on-time delivery, and end-user support. In all, 25 different attributes were tallied to come up with a composite rating, and the companies with top six scores received awards.

"It takes more than a good product to develop a great relationship with the retailers," pointed out William Coggshall, president of Pacific Media. "Dealers place great value on relationships and resources. For example, dealers report that the most important support a company can give is to provide capable dealer representatives, whether it's before or after the sale."

Coggshall continued, "We're proud that our annual survey is able to give the front projector companies clear and actionable feedback directly from the retailers. And we're honored to have this opportunity to recognize the outstanding performance by these six companies in this year's survey."

Pacific Media to Cover Flat Panel TV Sets at Displaybank US FPD Conference

Strong combination of sell-in and sell-through data can greatly help panel makers

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/13/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, will add the demand-side dimension of TV sets to the broad range of topics covering the supply-side of flat panels during Displaybank's Annual US FPD Conference, to be held in San Jose, CA on July 19 and 20.

"Rapid price declines—particularly from third-tier brands—continue to spur high growth in the American flat panel TV", says PMA's president, Dr. William Coggshall, who will speak on the topic of "North America FPD TV Market Trends". "But to optimize sales and profits, for both sets manufacturers and panel manufacturers, it is important to know more than just overall totals and averages. Manufacturers must have good figures on shipments and prices by individual models, and by segments defined as combinations of technology (LCD vs. PDP), screen size, and resolution."

Continues Dr. Coggshall, "PMA's sell-through Tracking Services, which measure true, volume-weighted street prices, have shown over the last several years that when LCDs reach price parity with PDPs in a size range, the share of LCDs accelerates substantially. Thus as each new generation LCD plant comes on line, reducing the cost of larger panels, LCD-technology TVs become more price competitive and force plasma sets to retreat to the larger sizes where LCDs are still too costly."

Most analysis of the market focuses only on screen size, but resolution also plays a strong role. The introduction of Full HD (1080p) resolution for LCD panels as small as 37 inches, with its "future-proof" promise, initially triggered a rapid shift to this resolution. But as newer buyers are typically more price sensitive, the price premium for Full HD now appears to be discouraging them. So the fabs have to take account of the combination of screen size and resolution in planning their panel production.

About the Conference

Pacific Media Launches Information Service Covering Displays Mounts

Thorough knowledge and detailed figures on displays provides strong foundation

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/29/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, announces that they are introducing a new market information service focused on mounts used for flat panel displays and front projectors.

The dramatic shift from heavy, thick CRT-technology TV sets to lighter, thinner flat panel sets in recent years has fueled an equally dramatic shift from furniture and stands to mounting solutions that take advantage of the thinness of the new sets. And the strong growth of front projectors in the K-12 education market has resulted in a commensurate growth in the need for ceiling mounts that both reduce theft and keep the projectors from youthful fingers. So the mounts business has recently come of age.

But mounts manufacturers are mostly working in the dark from an information standpoint. Unlike the displays manufacturers (with whom they have a symbiotic relationship), to whom for many years PMA has been supplying complete and detailed historical/forecasted figures plus insight and understanding, the mounts manufacturers have had little idea about the potential or actual sales of mounts. But now PMA will be taking the same time-tested approaches of manufacturer sell-in censuses and distribution channel sell-through tracking they have conducted for years for displays, and applying them to the mounts category.

Specifically, PMA will be collecting by-model shipments and inventory data from manufacturers and distributors, and using their comprehensive SQL Server database of products and shipments data to enter data, analyze it by mounts type, display size/weight, and other parameters, and publish it in pivot table and chart form. They will also relate these sales to those of the displays being mounted.

Pacific Media Reports 42-Inch 720p LCD HDTVs Sales Jump in April

Nearly 10% drop in average street price makes it most popular at that size

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/08/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for consumer flat panel HDTVs in North America declined 21% in April 2007, compared with March's figures, which is in keeping with seasonal declines in previous years. However, their Consumer Flat Panel Display Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows a strong rise in the unit sales of 40- to 44-inch LCD HDTVs with 720p resolution.

"The 50- to 54-inch 720p was the most popular segment with a 19.5% unit share," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President of Pacific Media. "The 40- to 44-inch 720p LCD segment jumped from 6.4% unit share in March to 12.5% in April. High volume sales of third-tier branded models through online retail channels boosted the segment share, and helped drive down the segment's average street price by nearly 10%."

In fact, when the unit shares for all resolutions are combined (720p and 1080p), the 40- to 44-inch LCD segment finished in a dead heat with the 50- to 54-inch PDP segment, as each earned a 20.4% unit share.

Sony took top brand honors for April on a unit share basis, with 18.8% that narrowly edged out Pioneer's 18.6% share. Pioneer was first in revenues, however, with a 28.1% share compared with second-place Sony's 24.8% share. Pioneer's PRO-1140HD was the best-selling unit in April with a 10.8% unit share and a 15.7% revenue share. Sony placed five models among the top ten best sellers for April.

U.S. Professional Flat Panel Sales Rise 36% in First Quarter 2007

Hospitality applications are a key factor in the growth

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/07/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit shipments of flat panel televisions and business displays 30-inches and larger in the United States jumped 36% for the first quarter of 2007, compared with the fourth quarter of 2006. Their Professional Flat Panel Display Americas Market Census also shows that in the Americas, LCD has taken a commanding lead over plasma, with a 60% unit share.

"Recently, we have seen noticeable 'leakage' of consumer products into professional applications, so it is good to see this healthy growth in the professional product segment," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media. "Most of the growth in the professional product sales has been in the 30- to 34-inch size segment, both in the United States and elsewhere in the Americas. A large portion of this results from the sale of LCD products into hospitality applications, especially for in-room entertainment."

The unit sales for professional products in the Americas rose 51% over the first quarter of 2006, but while plasma sales have declined 11% year on year, LCD sales grew 178%. Taking the U.S. sales alone, LCD unit sales were up 190% year on year.

In the first quarter of 2007, LG Electronics remained the leader in professional large flat panel displays, with a 37.5% unit share in the Americas, up 3.5 unit share points from the fourth quarter of 2006. Panasonic was in second place for the quarter with a 15.4% unit share, down 2.9 unit share points from the previous quarter.

Pacific Media Launches Information Service Covering "New Era" Front Projectors

Focus is on the broadening variety of new-technology sub-500 lumen models

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/21/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, announces that they are introducing a new market information service focused on an emerging class of front projectors that are different in both their technology and their target buyers.

During the past two years, the front projector market has seen numerous developments of components that are quantitatively and/or qualitatively different from the classic ("Old Era") models. Enabled by advances in lasers, LEDs, imager chips, and other technological changes, these "New Era" models are typically considerably smaller, dimmer, lower-powered, and less expensive than most Old Era models. Pacific Media has been tracking their evolution since the beginning, and now is prepared to provide thorough reporting on this emerging market segment.

As with any early-stage development, this segment is marked by considerable confusion and a broad range of technological combinations. For example, most of the smallest models that incorporate LEDs or lasers are battery-powered, but at least one (relatively bright) model requires wall power. The only characteristic that all seem to have in common currently is that they all offer less than 500 lumens of brightness.

Pacific Media's new information service aims to identify, classify, and quantify the markets for products such as the following types:

• Stand-alone mini-projectors (also known as pocket projectors)
• Snap-on or embedded mini-projector modules for mobile host devices
• Embedded mini-projector modules for "big" host devices
• Lower-end "toy" projectors
• Higher-end gaming projectors
• Personal projectors

The New Era Front Projector Industry Service's deliverables will be a subset of Pacific Media's current Front Projector Industry Service, which sets the industry standard for comprehensive coverage of the front projector markets.

Pacific Media Predicts Rapid Growth for Hospitality HDTV Sales

Large flat panel models provide competitive advantage

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/18/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that flat panel televisions for the hospitality market in the Americas accounted for 29% of unit sales of all professional displays 30" or larger in 2006. This proportion is forecast to swell to 40% in 2007.

"The hospitality segment is gaining importance in the professional flat panel market," according to Rosemary Abowd, Pacific Media Associates Vice President. "For the moment, a plasma or LCD HDTV is still a competitive advantage for the premier properties, but guests will soon come to expect it as a standard amenity, much like broadband Internet access."

Unit sales of in-room hospitality HDTVs increased 17% from 2005 to 2006, and are forecast to grow another 23% this year. The forecast for 2008 calls for nearly a one-third increase over this year's sales.

These figures only includes models 30" or larger, equipped for in-room entertainment. In its coverage of the professional flat panel market, Pacific Media includes other hospitality applications such as digital signage or public video displays, which are increasingly popular in hotels and sports arenas.

"Hotel and motel properties in the lower tiers are using smaller screen sizes in their rooms, "according to Abowd. "These installations are more price sensitive, and often use standard consumer models without any of the extra in-room hospitality features such as pay-per-view. These applications will also result in significantly more sales in the coming years."

Flat Panel HDTV Sales Tumble Further in February

Pacific Media Associates reports that prices fell another 3%

Menlo Park, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/25/2007 -- Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel televisions and business displays in North America fell another 14% in February 2007. Their Consumer Flat Panel Display Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows that this seasonal decline matches the trend set last year in January and February 2006.

The average street price for the month dropped another 3% overall to just over $2,000, which is down 29% for the year since February 2006.

"The best-selling segment was 30" to 34" LCD models," according to Rosemary Abowd, Pacific Media Vice President. "The average street price for this segment was steady from the prior month, however. The biggest price drop occurred in the 40" to 44" XGA resolution plasma segment, which lost more than 15% to reach $1,524. A major cause for this was the drop in price on the popular Panasonic TH-42PX600U, which lost nearly 20%."

The 37" WXGA LCD segment was also worthy of note. The unit market share jumped 4 share points to garner 10% overall, as the average street price fell below $1,000 for the first time in our survey.

In this sample, more than one in four units sold in February — 25.6% — was made by Sony, putting it in first place for the month. And more than one out of every three dollars spent on flat panel HDTVs — 34.3% — went for Sony products, placing the company first in revenues as well. Panasonic was in second place with 17.8% unit share and 18.4% revenue share. The best-selling consumer model was 50" Panasonic TH-50PX600U, with 5.4% unit share. The average street price for this model was unchanged from January at $2,383.
